hypothetical Harris trade

I agree with those of you who are opposed to the Blazers getting even younger next year.  In fact, with Oden and Rudy coming over I'm not sure we need another rookie at this time, especially at point guard.  Remember, we've still got Koponen to groom.  A veteran defensive presence at either the `1' or the `3' is what I'd most like to see for the 2008-9 season.

Is it too late to get Devin Harris?  How about giving up Jarrett Jack, Travis Outlaw, and our #13 draft pick for him?

2008-9 salaries, according to HoopsHype:
Harris - $ 7,800,000 (last year of contract)
   Outlaw - $ 4,000,000
   Jack - $ 2,002,623
   pick #13 - $ 1,739,160 (roughly - it's what last year's #13, Julian Wright, makes now)

So, it looks like the numbers match up pretty well.  Would you do it?

Do you think New Jersey would?  We know that Rod Thorn likes Jack.  Along with Travis, with the #13 pick they should be able to get some frontcourt help in the form of Roy Hibbert, Anthony Randolph, or maybe even Kevin Love.  Or Batum, Westbrook, etc.

Here's how our roster would shape up then (assuming Darius won't be back):

1st stringers:
   Oden
   LMA
   Webster
   Roy
   Harris

2nd stringers:
   Pryz
   Frye
   J. Jones
   Rudy
   Blake

3rd stringers:
   Raef
   McBob
   Wafer
   S. Rod
   Freeland / 2nd round pick / tominhawaii

Is this championship material yet?  Would we need to add one more piece in '09?

P.S.  This is a great website.

Good idea
This is what I'm hoping will get pulled off in the offseason.  New Jersey is also projected to draft a few spots below us so we could possibly switch #1 picks in the deal and throw one of our many 2nd rounders, still giving us the opportunity to draft a younger big guy that doesn't need to start right away.

I'd even throw in all of our second rounders.

Not if Westbrook is on the board at #13
Keep the pick, take Westbrook and keep Outlaw.  Westbrook will be as good as Harris in 2-3 years when our championship window is open.

i don't think NJ does this
remember, esp. after Diop becomes a FA, the only permanent piece the Nets are getting from the Kidd trade is Devin Harris.  I think they pegged him as a 'point guard of the future' type (and those are hard to come by).  I could see how Rod Thorn likes Jack, but Jack and Outlaw plus a first round pick I don't think will be enough for Harris.  If it was, I'd do it in a heart beat.  If the consensus on this site is 'this is a great deal!', it probably is for the Blazers, but will the Nets see it the same way?

well
i agree.  it would seem only a little tough for us to part with outlaw.  but you look at their roster, and they don't really need a guy like outlaw.  they need a guy like pryz, or frye.  and jack is not enough.  so i don't think they would do it either.  i wouldn't if i was NJ

Come on now...
Are you really advocating not drafting a pg based upon Koponen?

  1. Probably shoots straight from distance.
  2. Able to rifle passes to the open man.
  3. Obviously, strong defense.
  4. (da dum) Able to Finnish at the hoop.

Smoking in Finland army
I wonder if Pete had to quit smoking when he was in the army. I hope he didn't resume the habit when he got done with his stint. Maybe Marlboro can build a whole ad campaign around Blazer Euros when we win the championship. Let's see: Rudy, Pete, Freeland, Sergio, and maybe a couple second rounders drafted this year for the Euro stockpile. They could feature a different Euro Marlboro Man every week. Collect all six! Get cancer at no additional cost!

I don't think it's enough to land Harris,
but I'd be for it if it was.  There's no way Koponen plays for the blazers next year.  He has more turnovers than assists in the Finnish league.  We don't need two Jarrett Jacks, and it's debatable whether we need one.

Maybe I am being dense...
but who the heck is S. Rod (3rd string)?

Also I really don't see anything wrong with drafting Westbrook, Koponen most likely wont be here next season and I don't think he is ready.

(New sig coming as soon as I get some inspiration)

S Rod is Sergio Rodriguez
And Rod S is Rod Strickland. One is a chain smoking Euro and the other is a regular Amurrican.

A draft pick has no value
in matching salaries for a trade. However, your scenario would still work because it only needs to be within 75% plus/minus $100k.

I am not sure why Hoopshype lists only the $7.8M one year status of Harris but I have read that he is signed for more.

I also am skeptical that New Jersey will part with Harris for what we would be willing to give up. They move in 2 years to Brooklyn and need a solid core to attract an initial fan base. Harris appears to be part 2 of that core (with Richard Jefferson).

I agree
no way does Jersey do this trade. If they give up a starting PG for a backup PG/SG (JACK) and backup SF (TROUT) their fans will be pissed and Thorn is a good gm so no way does he pull this off for the Nets.

corrections
  1. 08-09 is the first year of a 5-year deal that Harris signed.
  2. Our 2008 pick has no salary cap value.

That said, the salaries will match, but I don't see us getting Harris for that package.  If we could, I'd do it

by douglast on Apr 7, 2008 9:40 AM PDT reply actions

I still say that any deal w/ NJ will likely
have to involve us taking Vince Carter.

If Thorn really does like Jack, or thinks Marcus Williams is an NBA starting point, then he might consider trading Harris, so long as he;

sheds Carter's contract

and

gets back young talent in return

and

gets back draft picks.

Assuming Pritchard is really enamored with Harris and Allen is willing to pay the freight, this may not be a bad deal for Portland.  Vince Carter as the primary scorer on the White team makes some sense.  Teamed with Pryz, Blake & possibly Rudy, he'd get lots of touches and give the 2nd unit offensive punch.

KP has worked miracles before
and I would be extremely impressed if he can land Harris or Calderon.

If I'm NJ I wouldn't even sniff that deal unless I thought I could replace Harris with another top PG in this year's draft, like Westbrook.

That won't happen with the #13 pick, and for all this talk about Rod Thorn's mancrush on JJack, it's probably nowhere near Nate MacMillan's so I don't think he's crazy enough to make him their starting PG of the future.  So for right now, if I'm NJ, I say no thank you and focus on improving my roster in other ways.
