Avery Johnson Out As Dallas Head Coach and Durant ROY
well looks like the axe fell quickly, .wow a 73% winnng record in the regular season and 23-24 mark in the playoffs,, well I bet he will get a job quickly.
can't say I'm not happy that Dallas went down so quickly. I don't like the mavs.
and no real surprise as Durant will win Rookie of the year!
http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/52248/20080430/sonics_durant_will_get_rookie_of_year/

ROY, with ODEN

Nice double meaning there.

Double ROY with double MIP
With double three-peat NBA titles.

Don't forget...
We’ll have a double averaging a double-double (LMA, Oden), and another (Roy) averaging a triple-double.
Thats a double double, doubled by a triple double.
Other teams will be in trouble.

decide to make himself head coach. He has a big enough ego that he would do it. THAT would be funny.

Who would of thought
that before the draft, that both Oden and Durant would BOTH win R.O.Y.
Granted the second hasnt happened yet but it is just a formality if you ask me.

I was going to say that it isn't just a formality
with Rose, Beasley, and some other fine college players coming out, until I remembered that the other ROY candidates will be going to struggling teams while GO will be on a team that wins 50+ games. Team records always seem to matter so much to the voters on these awards. All GO has to do is stay healthy enough to play at least 65 games… hm, maybe it really isn’t a given that he’ll win it. Let’s just say it’s his to lose.
by MiledAnimal on Apr 30, 2008 2:36 PM PDT 0 recs
Although, he might not be given credit for improving his team.
Some voters might think any productivity from Oden is his team’s credit, not his.
That’s the only thing that could work against him.

We will be a 50+ win team
and in the playoffs, there may be a problem if Miami gets a top 2 pick, where they would have Wade, Marion, and Beasley/Rose. Only then would there be a chance as Oden will have the opportunity to have studied the game for a year and work on any deficiencies that he may have, while the other 2 have been busy playing ball this year.
Plus Oden has gotten so much hype the league wouldnt allow him not to get it. That factor, the fact that we will be the only team in the playoffs from the lottery and Oden should play at least 70 games and average 15/12/3/3 on .500% shooting and 80%FTs that added to his defensive presence will guarantee him ROY

I wouldn't say "amazing"
He played about as I’d have expected. He threw up a LOT of shots from Day 1, and he gradually got more efficient. But he’s got a long ways to go to even be the next Tracy McGrady—let alone the next Jordan (as many predicted). I do think Durant’s fun to watch and I expect he’ll play in a bunch of all-star games, but I’m not so sure he’s going to win a championship. On the other hand, I’d bet money that, barring injury, Oden will get there at least once. Even if his offense doesn’t develop as we hope, he should be dominant defensively within a year or so.

come on...
this doesn’t need to be an oden vs. durant thing.
give the man his due.
one of the best seasons in nba history for someone his age.
great numbers for a rookie—any rookie.
look at their roster, who is he playing with to help carry the load?
improvement shown over the course of the season.
not to mention the worst owner in the nba, the worst team situation to be in… all handled with class and dignity.
all things considered it was amazing and more.
nobody did more with less in the NBA than KD this year.
the fact that he is only 19 is flabbergasting.

OK, forget the Oden comparison
I still thought Durant had a nice rookie season, not an “amazing” or “flabbergasting” one. I like Durant a lot; he’s great fun to watch, and he seems like a great kid. He should continue to improve. But I agree with Mike Woodson that Horford had at least as good a rookie year. So did Roy the year before. Look how they helped their teams.
Yes, Durant did show growth, but on a veteran team he would have been LESS impressive, not more. Because his team was bad, he was allowed-even encouraged-to fire at will. I’m sorry, but there’s a lot more to basketball than scoring stats. Tracy McGrady is the NBA player whose game Durant’s most resembles, and look at his playoff record.

The competition was pretty low this year.
Especially since, with the vote coming before the playoffs,
Horford’s good playoff showing isn’t a factor.

agree to disagree
i disagree completely.
good players look better and play better when surrounded by talent. look at kobe with gasol. look at chandler with paul. look at pierce with garnett. on a veteran team he would have a defined role, help from his teammates showing him the way, clear expectations of what he is supposed to do, and players he can rely on to help him. he had none of that and a coach who didn’t seem to care all that much: succeeding in those circumstances deserves recognition.
KD held up way better than B Roy during his rookie season, did so at a much younger age, with inferior teammates (as mentioned), and had to handle things as the go-to option instead of 2nd fiddle to zbo. despite all the knocks on kd’s toughness, he put up similar rebounding numbers to brandon and averaged both a block and a steal a game. brandon had more assists/game and he is a better passer than KD but he also had zbo. overall, for playing in 80 games, at 19 years old, putting up the numbers he did in the situation he did and with the teammates he did, i give that one to KD.
horford didn’t have any pressure on him and would not have been capable of doing the things KD if he were the first option. he was the third or fourth option on the Hawks, they play in a much weaker conference against inferior competition. no one is game-planning around Al Horford. he was a very good role-player and a true asset, but not nearly as impressive as KD.
the 2s and 3s in the western conference cannot be compared to the 4s in the eastern conference when it comes to overall skill level. durant was dealing with better players and better teams every night and he still got his.
put it this way: take kd and horford away from their teams and you might as well move the sonics into the d league; the hawks are still in playoff contention in the east.
there are areas for improvement (3 point percentage, offensive rebounding, passing) but the man is 19. nitpick all you want but he had better pro seasons at 19 than all but a few NBAers… brandon, al, and most everyone else was way behind his curve at 19. he hit game winners with the defense keying on him at 19 years old. how many people can say they did that? not jordan. not carter.
mcgrady’s struggles are his alone and don’t belong in this discussion either.

Avery gone and Dallas sinking into the quicksand
I liked Avery. That he was picked by Don Nelson probably worked against him.
Durant exceeded my expectations with 2.4 assists, a steal and a block per game. His shooting % was better than many rookies but will improve – especially his 3pt shooting (28.8%). I thought he would shoot better than that but he likely was forced to shoot at times without a good look. I think he will continue to get big numbers (barring injury) because that sorry team just does not have many other scoring options.
Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

In the NBA, on the other hand, the vast majority of NBA championships are won by teams led by a player who would be considered the best player in the league at the time, or among the top three players in the league at the time.

We will sweep all the awards next year
GM of the year: KP
For convincing Rudy to come over and pay US $1mill just for the opportunity to play with these bunch of talented induviduals..
For compelling Derick Rose that it is his destiny to play in the Rose City, and refusing to play for any other team other than the Blazers only having to trade Jack .
Coach of the year: Nate
For turning Rudy into the most tenacious on the ball defender in the world, beating out Bowen, Battier and Camby for DPOY
For turning Brandon into the league All star MVP, league MVP and finals MVP
For somehow tricking the officials to let the Blazers play with 6 men on the court, magically finding playing time for all the players. Our starting lineup:
Rose
Roy
Rudy
Webster
LMA
Oden
White unit:
Blake
Sergio
Jones
Outlaw
Frye
Pryzbilla
MVP: Brandon
For taking the youngest team in the league, AGAIN to the finals and beating whoever it was in the east.
6th man: Travis AND Rudy
For being the 6th man on the floor on both the first and second teams, NO ONE is guarding them so they can rack up booku points, asists and rebounds.
DPOY: Rudy
Nate is such a good coach he teaches Rudy the Jedi mind trick to just have opposing players give Rudy the ball, who would of thought that 35 steals/game was possible??
ROY: 3 way tie between Oden, Rose and Rudy
Unprecedented in the NBA, the trio of Blazers share the rookie of the year trophy with each other. Oden coming in with 20pts, 15 reb, 5 blocks, 5 asts. Rose setting a NBA rookie record with 15 asts/game and igniting numerous fast breaks, and Rudy for shooting 200 3pters at a 65% clip and averaging 35 steals/gm.
Anybody waht to add anything?

YES
Paul Allen will come up with a youth serum and the entire Blazers roster will stay the same age physically, but their experience will increase.
I think we could pull something so that after the three way tie for the rookie of the year award, they would stop awarding it all together.
