Gameday Open Thread: Rockets vs. Blazers
Can we pull out a win against the Yao-less Rockets or will our impending April misery be unending?
There's a lot of stuff to read today so I'll just say that you can register all of your game-related thoughts right here as usual!

Oh Yeah
Raising one eyebrow...
The truth is EVERYBODY'S been missing The Rock. Everybody's ALWAYS missed The Rock! Stone Cold Steve Austin missed The Rock. Mick Foley missed The Rock when he wasn't too busy jackin' his cactus. Or was he lovin' his dude? But never mind that! Every Hardy, Edge, Umaga (bleaaaahhh!), Big Show, Big Daddy, big 7-foot tall galoot and little wanna-be superstar who's ever stepped into The Rock's ring missed The Rock with every punch they threw! Heck, Hunter Hearst Helmsley even missed The Rock back when he was just a soft-knuckled, pie-craving fancy boy from Connecticut. Bow down to the King? There is only ONE King and The Rock is the ONLY man on the planet who sings just like him. But no, no, no...no free show tonight! No fancy pyro, no long walks, no "This Is Your Life" segment...because this ain't your life. This is The Rock's life! You're just living in it. Or, in this case, dying in it. Because anyone...AN-Y-ONE who gets in the way of the People's Champ and tries to keep that People's Belt from around the People's Waist--The Rock doesn't care if it's Raw, Smackdown, ECW, or any other federation you want to open with something big and shiny at the top--The Rock is going to TAKE that title, shine it up real nice, and...
Ah, ah, AH, The Rock KNOWS what you're thinking. Don't get ahead of The Rock now! The Rock will take that title, slap it upside your head forwards, backwards, inside and out until you don't know WHAT hit you, and then walk away while you watch those bright lights spinning...not the Champion for the moment (The Rock is looking at you, you over-hyped, square-faced, shuffling knucklehead) but the Champion for the Ages.
If you smell-ell-ell-ell-OW! What the Rock...is...cookin'.
I´m lost in the middle
Er... Um....
Let's just say there will be no fight to rule the world....

I didn't know.
You really forgot one thing, Dave

I think you are way off, and unless you are concocting some fantasy what if with thai peanut sauce its unlikely your team would be so convincing if victorious.
A better analogy might have been the PTB are going to punk the rockets like Tully Blanchard vs Magnum TI

Gonna be a close one. Blazers 265 - Rockers 257
That tells me the Blazers are going to win it but the they'll have to keep Mutombo in check since he's a 55.
Kick the Rockettes in their cheescake!
GO BALZERS!

"The Team with Caricature!"
I second that
Does Portland's TiH include Oden?
Yeah
This Roy guy is cool
He wants to play tonight, but Nate and Jay won't let him. I can't remember the reason, but it's something about wanting to hand the reins over to Jack next season and see if we can trade Roy while his value is high... I dunno, I was reading it fast.
He'll be back soon though, maybe against the Lakers if he wanted to come back tonight? Hoo doggies that'd be a sweetums mega love kiss nose face nice time!

Hi Dave!
Oh now I get it
But if THAT game goes over . . .
OR . . . as it's sounding, our game is being delayed until those Eastern Conference goofballs sort their weak stuff out.
I think the latter one is likely...
Yeah
Especially with Dirk's quick return.
Wow. Hey.
It doesn't conk out a half-hour before game time like the one at the KXL site.
I haven't heard Wheels call a game in YEARS . . . could this actually hold up tonight?
[Note: Portlander in Vancouver, B.C., since August 2005]
Yeh, but I gotta go through the eMail.
Don't feel like messing with that dance in gametime.
It's holding up, tho'.

Ohhhh yeah.
And T-Mac isn't much of a factor!
Next year
Blazers COULD win this game...
Unless James Jones can imitate 'Good Martell'.
Lead is 13...
Or smashed through the ropes with a metal chair...
Or pulled through the ropes . . .

Trout for 2!!
Blazers getting run out of the gym.
how disturbing is it?
It's disturbing
fine take it another level
Martell is not sick...
I know the real story--- Martell got bombed with his love-icon Kobe in LA last night and obviously Kobe slipped him a mickey
Houston = 7 x 3s; Blazers = 0 x 3s.

And Rickets shots aren't falling now!
JJ1 for 2!!
Pryz -- 9 and the buzzer sounds...
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Two Blazers do not pick the ball up, each looking at the other, Houston comes running in, scoops it up and scores.
That was the saddest looking thing I've seen in a long time.
whats that thing called
Tracheotomy?
yea whats up with Deke?
After looking at the boxscore...
Finishing the half on a run.
Seems to me, for that team that goes on a run to end the half (but NOT the game), there's two ways to look at it:
- Too bad the half ended, right when they were getting hot.
- They played harder, right when the other team had one step in the locker room.

Oh...my eyes! MY EYES!
Man

But seriously, for the half . . .
For those of you who don't follow Vancouver hockey, the Canucks are down 2-0 with their season on the line,
wasting both a two-man advantage AND a five-minute power play without scoring.
They're about to get knocked out after leading the division just weeks ago
and being in a playoff spot for months, until two days ago--wasting 4 homes games to end the season.
Basically, for the past decade, the Canucks have see-sawed between two kinds of season:
- Contending falsely and over-achieving but ultimately coming up short in the playoffs against a REAL contender, like the 1999 Blazers.
- Getting in good position for most of the season and blowing it at the end, like the 2001 Blazers.
Except I CARED about those Blazers teams, and couldn't really care less about these rubes.
But their fans go through the same sort of rollercoaster ride that we all did a presidential administration ago.
It's so hard to watch, trying to tell them, "Wait out the meltdown, blow-up, and re-build. This is NOT your best chance."
Pryz takes the charge!
Pryz draws the charge...
LMA for 2!!
The offense...
It seems so easy for three minutes and then all of a sudden it's like juggline eggs blindfolded on a greased tightrope
its a close game
I feel this way also.
Przy draws the charge!
Oooh, bad tech on Joel . . .
Pryz picks up a T, throwing an elbow.
He's a toughie...
No seriously

Hey Now!
Pryz hits 2FTs!!
Blake for 2!!
Blake just juked somebody out of his Nikes...

TNT's footage of the locker room
Great to see them come out and respond. It often feels like Nate's speeches were ignored (when you get to see them on TNT)
KP motioning to the refs about counting the bucket was a great camera shot. :)
Blazers have outscored the Rockets 16-6
Looks like THIS third quarter is tolerable.
Sort of the opposite of recent games...
To reiterate -- if 2 of those garbage Houston 3s had boinked out like they should have, and if Blake and Pryz didn't screw that one play up, it would have been a 1 point game at half...
Lord of the Rings Movies
That was a bad idea.
hmmm....
<--- one time centurian.... somehow
LMA for 2!!
LMA hits for his 19 and a tie.
as if
Trout hits 2 FTs!!
Nice try though.

I was just going to say
you are just looking for a reason
I'm saddened to report...
blazers played yesterday
Another ultra-incomptent 2-on-1 break.
This is COACHING!!!!!
I do not like to see
WTF??????
Lead is back to 7...
the laziest passing team in PTB history
Make that 9 points.
Blazers are flushing this game...
Uh-oh.
[gulp]
time for coach to do something
Horrible.
Horrible.
This game is over, people. Absolute implosion in last 3 minutes of 3rd Q.
t
How many Blake TO's in that stretch?
you made me laugh
Like running a marathon

Jack rips a 3, breaking 6 minute drought.
Ive never seen it happen before
This game can still be won...
Small ball. Ugh.

Easy offensive foul call
actually appearred to be Frye
Gotta laugh and Jones' 3 attempt
Is it me, or does his 3 usually fail when his knee is hurting? Perhaps his knee has been acting up more than he's let on.
McGrady hits again....
Thats weird
McGrady from 20 feet for his 28.
I hope he opts out and leaves.
T-Mac on fire. 30 pts.

Superstars love to kill the Blazers...
Ouch it's getting dangerously close
I can't wait for a year or two when we can make McGrady put his obnoxious grin and finger wag where it belongs.
what a vicious foul by Lamarcus
That was an awkward sentence

Webster, too.
I'm guessing............ it's the flu.
what are they thinking...
they are thinking
TMac: 23 of the Rockets' 33 2nd half points.
good for him
Blake pots an open jumper...
Well, that 3rd Q implosion was the killer.
Lead is 13, 3 minutes to go...
Goodnight Tokyo.
t
one more lackadaisical entry pass
its important to remember
I am.
and SOME--not all, but some--of these role players (from among JJ, Webster, Trout, Sergio, James Jones, Frye, Blake, and Przybilla)
need to show themselves worthy of making more plays than mistakes, and they need to show it before contract-renewal/option-pickup time well before this time next year.
From what I'm seeing down the stretch this season, the only guys who are rising to the level needed to go where we think we're going
are Przybilla and . . . I dunno. Until recently, I'd've said Blake and Trout were dependable for supporting roles,
but both of them seem to have taken a step back from that dependability. Webster's seemed better, but his absence hurts that.
We can't just fill ALL of our needs on the free agent maket when we get cap space.
SOMEBODY outside of Roy and Oden needs to be counted on to fill supporting roles on a contender-level team.
Instead, everyone seems to be going the way of, say, Boris Diaw, if you know what I mean.
may the force be with you
TNT shot of Oden ...

Four hunderedth!
Some thoughts on the team
Turnover ratio measures the percentage of an individual's offensive possessions that end in a TO. A field goal attempt, an assist, or turnover is worth one possession, whereas a free-throw attempt is worth .44 possessions (this is to account for and-1s and technical free throws--.44 is the constant that works when you look back through history). He has the third worst turnover ratio in the league. This is inexcusable for a guy who is asked to do so little on offense. Not only does he not contribute on the offensive end, he actively detracts from it.
Another problem with the team is that only two Blazers can create their own offense regularly--Roy and Outlaw. Roy is a pretty efficient scorer, as he can often knock down the shots he creates or get to the foul line. Outlaw on the other hand is streaky, and the horse shots from last December and January aren't falling as readily anymore. If you need to get a shot off at the end of the clock, he's a good guy to go to, but there's no reason the ball should stick in his hands when he's in there with guys like Roy or Aldridge. He needs to learn to pass up those spin-move into 20-foot off-balance fade-aways with 17 seconds left on the shot clock. If continues to work on his 3-point shot, and more importantly begins to take it with a greater frequency (say 1.4 attempts every 10 minutes) he'll be far more valuable to the team.
Jack tries to create his own offense but fails often. How regularly do we see him jump up in the air and throw an errant pass to bail himself out once he gets into the paint? We need another shot creator. Jack also often blows an offensive play because he'll pass up an open shot, only to drive into the teeth of the defense and ruin any upper hand the offense had gained. Jack is pretty much garbage, and he needs to go this offseason.
Aldridge needs to learn how to get to the foul line and get rebounds. If he can work on his dribbling, that would also be great.
Watching Blake try to run the offense is oftentimes painful. Is anyone else tired of him pounding the ball 16 feet away from the hoop, running around, unable to get into the paint while the shot clock keeps ticking and ticking? He can't set anyone up because he is never a threat himself.
Jones had two fluke months and we need to let him walk. Martell brings more to the table for less money than what Jones will get on the FA market. Rewarding a guy with a bum knee he provides nothing but streaky shooting would be a bad move.
Frye I'm ok with as a backup 4. Watching other teams have lay-up drills with him and Aldridge in together is unbearable. He's a fine guy to spell Aldridge for 12-15 minutes a night.
Martell works fine in his offensive role, but he'd make himself a lot more valuable if he worked on his ball-handling and his shot off of back screens. What we really need him to be is a perimeter defensive stopper.
Sergio should get more burn than he does. This proved to be another developmental year, and he could have benefited. As it stands, he's afraid to do anything out there and plays incredibly tight. I think this is one of the primary reasons why his play has decreased this year. Aside from this he needs to work on his shooting and defense.

Something just struck me in that text.
and throw an errant pass to bail himself out once he gets into the paint? We need another shot creator.
Jack also often blows an offensive play because he'll pass up an open shot,
only to drive into the teeth of the defense and ruin any upper hand the offense had gained.
That whole description sounded so familiar . . . and then it hit me: That's what Ruben Patterson was like as a Blazer.
Remember? There was no triple-team he wouldn't drive into, go up, and, faced with nothing after getting off his feet,
he'd try to force a shot (often blocked, sometimes stolen, almost always missed), or he'd make a panic dump to . . .
whomever, even if there was nobody there. He'd pass first, look second, because he was caught, in air and surrounded.
Remember that? As if it happened . . . oh, maybe tonight? Except he's shorter now, and a better passer and chucker,
but not quite good enough at either to cover his tendency to drive and lift first, and THEN see what he can do once he's up.
The story of the second half of the season
Portland was winning because the white unit kept stepping up night in and night out and supplemented the good play of the starters. If you have not noticed, Roy, LMA, Przybilla, and to an extent Martell and Blake have elevated their games in the second half of the year.
But the entire white unit has completely collapsed it seems. Jack, is inconsistent. Outlaw went through several inconsistent stretches. Mr James Jones, has missed several games with injuries, and the inconsistency bug has hit him, too [he went 0-4 tonight]. Sergio has shown spurts, along with Frye, but we all know how long those last...
BTW, thanks again Fatty.
Xar Xar knows what I'm talking about :)
