Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Is it just me?

Over the last four games that B. Roy has not played in, I haven't enjoyed watching the team as much. Now, please don't call me a fair weather fan, of course I still watch the games and root 'em on. I guess I just didn't quite realize or maybe just got used to the amount of excitement that Roy brings to the team. I know he is the best player on the team and an allstar for goodness sake, but I guess I really wasn't thinking about how great he really is. Now that he has missed a few games, I've REALLY noticed how amazing he is and the talent he brings to the team.

Has his absence opened anyone else's eyes a little wider than his amazing play has this season?

I hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it.
Just goes to show the difference it makes to have a player who could do something amazing on any given possession.

That's why everyone loved AI so much ... Those Philly teams never won that much, but you knew any moment he could take a game over. Hopefully Oden brings a little of that too ...

Playmaking
The Blazers are painful to watch without B.Roy because he's the only competent, consistent play maker on the team.  We have no offense without him.  It's no surprise that the only game we've won without him this year was that horribly ugly nail biter against the Clips.  Hopefully we can bring some players in that can actually make something happen, because Roy's injury history isn't the prettiest.

Absolutely
I couldn't agree more.  We look lost out there without Roy- Roy doesn't allow stretches like the end of the 3rd quarter tonight where we just completely lose focus for 3 minutes and blow the game.

We've been able to win a couple games when Roy has been limited to only a few minutes (Utah game where Webster went nuts in the 3rd, Washington game) but when faced with the task of going the whole game without him, we just don't look confident that we can pull it off.

It's definitely a concern- we are far too dependent on Roy's health.

On a tangentially related note, we are 16 and 25 since finishing our 17 wins in 18 games stretch. The biggest difference has been getting absolutely nothing out of James Jones lately. 38 wins (and possibly a few more before its all said and done) still exceeds the expectations I had at the beginning of the season- and I'm doing my best not to lose sight of that- but this team still has A LOT of work to do in order to make Dave's playoff prediction for next year come true.

Yeah, he makes the team go.
And he does it with confidence.  Other people follow his example.  The thing that gets me the most about the Blazers sans Roy is their tendency to lose every scrap of confidence when they start missing.  They were actually playing pretty good defense for most of the Rockets game, they just couldn't get anything going offensively.

Next year they get two very strongly self-confident players in Oden and Fernandez (knock on wood).  I'm looking forward to that more than a little bit.

Well, I guess that you have your answer...
there is in all likelihood not one single Blazer fan that doesn't desperately miss what BRoy brings to this team. I just hope that when he plays in 1 or more of these last games, that he does not re-injure himself - that would just kill me.

Now if I just get Scotty to beam me up, and run the Enterprise thru a time warp so that I can suddenly find myself in October, and revving up for the 2008-2009 season!

Oden, LMA, BRoy, Rudy and the rest of the gang!

Its gonna be SCOREGASMIC!!!

38:19 Min, 11-18 FG, +11 +/-, 5 Off, 12 Rebs, 7 Ast, 1 Stl, 1 Blk, 22 Pts - LMA vs Clips 3-21-08

Exactly
Imagine if you had cancer and you last wish was to watch him play in the last Blazers game this season.  Then your friends and family got together and bought you a ticket and you go to the game, only to find out that Nate is "resting" all the starters for the off season and to give more playing time to players on the bench.  It would be the worst Make A Wish ever!

I noticed
and I'll bet that is what defines leadership : the team is lost without him.

He did only play one quarter+ during the blowout of the Wiz and there was lots said that night about everyone normally deferring to Brandon & LMA (also on the bench) and they were coming into their own ... but that seemed to last only one night ... or was it because BOTH were out and when LMA returned it also returned the focus to him?

Yep
Roy is a candle in the window on a cold dark winter's night to me and the entire team.

James Jones
If Jones does not opt out of his contract IMO we should trade him for what ever we can get.I do see why the Sun let him go for almost nothing. In the second half of the season he has been a nunfacter his whole career.Trade him it well be another expiring contract to go with Raef expiring contract which can look very good to some teams.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
