Bayno's Replacement
Obviously, we have another huge void to fill on our team that hasn't been generating enough chatter. Coach Bill Bayno was a very popular, well-liked, and effective coach on our team. Normally, when a coach at his position (basically third string assistant) leaves a team, it's no big deal. This, for players and the coaching staff alike, is a big deal to the Trailblazer organization. The search for and selection of his replacement should be taken very seriously. I believe it will (our front office is good at EVERYTHING), but it is something that also deserves a little more pointless speculation here at the Edge, so here goes:
Best Case Scenario:
Tim Grgurich - Grg's resume speaks for itself. He specializes in developing young talent and has had success everywhere he has been. While I realize it wasn't a pretty ending the last time he was in Portland, I believe that had more to do with the leadership of the organization at the time. With the first round sweep of the Nuggets (his current team) expecting to cause a major shake-up in Denver (despite what you heard) this would be a great time for the Blazers to try and reacquire one of the best special assistants ever.
Big Man Mentor:
Patrick Ewing - For those of you who don't believe he is an effective coach, guess again. You can't tell me that him being in Orlando and Dwight Howard's super-human season aren't related. It would be great for Oden, LMA, Joel, and Channing Frye to have his experience as one of the NBA's dominant big-men at their disposal. His leadership and playoff experience both as a player and coach would be a huge factor for everybody else on the team (including our current coaching staff). This would probably be very unlikely as Patrick believes he is ready to be a head coach, not a big-man specialist.
To The Point:
Eric Snow - From what I've read, this guy is an NBA head coach waiting to happen. I see Eric as being a Nate McMillan-esque point guard's coach. Addressing our biggest weakness as a coach could be his biggest contribution to an NBA team ever. And that says a lot for one of the most underrated team leaders ever.
The Wild Card:
Janero Diaz - The top assistant on 2007 ACB Coach of the Year Joan Plaza's Real Madrid squad, Janero makes the most sense if someone else comes over from Spain - aka: Rudy Fernandez. A proven track record of winning in a very competitive league, he would not only help to bridge a few communication gaps, he would also be key in getting the most out of Rudy, Sergio, and perhaps Jose Calderon (as well as helping us attract other euro-talents with his comprehensive understanding of their game).
Yes, But No:
Dwayen Casey - Sure he is a former Nate assistant (a TOP assistant), but this would be too good to be true. We are searching for a specialist, Dwayne is one of the best unemployed head coaches in the league. Maybe we get him as a guest speaker while he's awaiting his next job.
These are a few suggestions I came up with to get the discussion going. Has anyone else heard anything or have any ideas of who we could end up with? As always, your thoughts and criticisms are more than welcome.

I'll vote for you
As long as you also use your inflatable arms to beat the sheol out of Trout for every time he loses his man on D.
Man… you’ll be busy.

I want them to hire internally
Can’t Roy be a player-assistant coach? All kidding aside, I don’t think it’s possible to have a big splash assistant coach and would honestly like them to look from within. All your ideas are cool though.

Oahu
I live in Honolulu. I can do all the stuff the Brady Bunch did on their vacation to Hawaii. I imagine Oden is on the North Shore training at BYU Hawaii. That’s about as far from me as you can get and still be on this island.

Yeah, but it feels like a million hours
40 minutes it too far for me to go to do some stalking. I would consider stalking Oden if he was at UH, it’s about 10 minutes away. Driving 40 minutes in hopes to see a guy riding a ten speed would cut into my BEdge time and watching the playoffs.

Shooting
We have a shooting coach don’t we? I could have sworn I saw a vignette on a shooting coach this season. If not…we should get an enforcer-esque coach. It’s hard to believe that we have Mo Lucas and the rest of the team hasn’t rubbed off on his physicality. Or we can get a Spanish speaking flopping coach. With all the speedy PGs that are gonna burn us and our 2 euro guard next year we will need to learn how to flop as a team.
by Philthyanimal on Apr 29, 2008 8:51 PM PDT 0 recs
Flop as a team? Even in Spain
I don’t think they do team flopping. Chris Paul drives down the lane, and five guys fall flat.
This actually could be very effective. We have to come up with something.
I’ve thought all alone that Bayno’s replacement would be Rudy’s father, to help ease the financial hurt he’ll have in his first year over here. He probably taught Rudy to flop at a young age, so he might be perfect in this role.

Travelling coach
No, no, I realize the Blazers travel “first class.” I meant to suggest that Rudy’s dad could teach the “European two-step” (as Doug Collins called it the other day) as well as flopping. Then we’d have all the skills that have wrecked the NBA game in our arsenal. On offense, you tuck the ball under your arm at the top of the key and run to the hoop like a running back. Then on defense, you fall down as though you’ve been shot every time the OPPONENT pulls a Gayle Sayers.

Is Patrick a free agent?
or still under contract with Orlando? The guys we have are proven and #1 priority so we are really hiring at the bottom of the coaching staff. Patrick is said to want to go to NYK and I suspect that he may get there as well.
I like your idea of a Spanish coach if one is willing and able to do the heavy lifting that an assistant must do.

I will never get tired of watching vintage Sabas. The English language does not include words that are effective in expressing the amazing things Sabas could do with a basketball. He was the complete package.

I've wanted this for years
since he retired the first time in fact. He had such a cerebral understanding of the game for a guy standing 7’3”, and don’t get me started on his passing!

If that happened
I would crap my pants, and call to upgrade my season tickets to behind the Blazer bench, at the same time. Even if it cost an arm and a leg and a new pair of pants.

yeah i say that
half kidding half serious. I think it would be a complete fan coup as he would instantly become the most popular coach, and like I said I haven’t seen him when he was at his peak and what he was able to do, but I would imagine that just his feel for the game and the intangibles that he would be able to teach our young bigs would be invaluable.
TP would be a great choice but I think that it would be much like the Dwayne Casey thing, he has been a head coach before and would likely not want to be at the end of the bench as Bayno was the lowest assistant coach. We would have to pick someone that has not coached before in the NBA as it would at best be a lateral move, from lowest assistant coach to another lowest assistant coach.
Methinks this is more of a former player who wants to start his coaching career, or a hot shot college coach who wants to get into the NBA.

Terry Porter = Dwayne Casey
Another guy who is a head-coach-in-waiting. No way he takes a third/fourth seat on our bench, no way Nate bumps one of his guys. Unless Monty or Dean leave for their own head coaching jobs, we should be looking for an up-and-comer. I like my idea of going fishing overseas, especially in the ACB. No one’s voting for Janero! I thought you guys would be into that idea, what with all of the potential Spaniards on our team (gotta admit I voted for Snow). That might be something else our guys are looking for in Europe right now.

special assistants are overrated
If you can’t get a multimillion dollar athlete to do his job right and improve, then you’re probably a musclehead. Anybody but a musclehead can do the job of an assistant coach. Hell I know assistant coaches whose only qualification is they know what kind of beer the coach likes to drink.

I dunno dude
Bayno, Monty, Dean, all have been instrumental in bringing our young team around way ahead of schedule. Is Tex Winter for Phil Jackson overrated? Well, yeah, probably because he’s a Laker.
Finding these hard working behind the scenes coaches can turn Martell from a brooding shot-misser to a confident scorer. Don Nelson’s assistants might be beer runners, but Nate’s all seem to have very important roles and he defers to them a lot.
I know you’re just joking, but I jus’ sayin’.

Grgs would be great...
...but I doubt he would do it. Paul Allen let the situation develop that saw him leave, and Paul’s still here, even if everyone else involved has moved on.
Terry would be awesome, and so would Casey, but they’re likely to get head coaching jobs someplace instead. Terry NEVER should have gotten the hook in Milwaukee. I mean, look how long his replacement lasted.
Ditto Casey in Minnesota.
How about giving Eric Musselman a call?

I still dont see why Dwayne Casey doesent work out
He was unemployed last year and nobody seemed to be biting even though he did a fine job with a crappy minny roster. It is not like he has to be Bayno’s replacement or have everyone move down a rung if he comes in. With some creative shuffling he could be incorporated quite well. Who ever we get I am sure they will keep the awesomeness on an upward swing.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
