What's the Hold-up from Spain?!?
Mike Barret said in his last blog entry (April 23rd) that "Kevin Pritchard and his staff left for Spain on Tuesday" to meet with Rudy Fernandez. His use of the past tense would mean that KP and company left on Tuesday, April 21st. It's been a whole week! Does anyone know what's going on? I can't stand the suspense any longer! How the heck am I going to make it to the draft, much less next season? I'M FREAKIN' OUT, MAN!

Rudy's holdin' out
He wants a solid gold cigarette holder, and Nate to kiss Sergio on the mouth with tongue.
Plus, I heard that when KP shook Rudy’s hand, Rudy flopped and got awarded free throws. It really made KP mad, but that’s Rudy for ya. He’s a Euro!
I believe Mikey Baretta said that this trip was to also scout all over Europe, so maybe they haven’t even got to Rudy yet? I ain’t gonna worry too much… even if Rudy was thinking he didn’t wanna NBA it up before, once he meets KP and KP lays on the KP charm, Rudy will come over for 10 day contracts just to be a Blazer.
After Rudy hits a three pointer, he puts a rose in his mouth and dances around like Don Flamenco. His transition to the NBA will be tough because he’ll get T’d up for that. He’ll learn though…

You are funny...
I’m new here but I have come to learn that Mortimer’s posts are always an entertaining read. I’m not sure if Nate will make out with Sergio, though, he’s obviously not Nate’s type (see: playing time). Anyway, I’m just bored and looking forward to figuring out this Rudy hoop-la once and for all. Hopefully, he’s everything he’s made out to be. I’ve read about all of the MVP’s, the Copa del Rey, and seen the youtube highlights – but, of course, nothing is certain until we see how he does in the big league. Can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
PS: I used to love beating the crap out of Don Flamenco.

I'll have an update today
I just got off the phone with Chad Buchanan, one of the Trail Blazers’ scouts who is in Europe with KP and the front office crew. I’ll have an update on Blazers.com later today.
Just an FYI: They got to Europe on Saturday morning, not last Tuesday.

Sabonis...?
I’m worried that this situation might end up like Sabonis. Drafted but stayed in Europe for years. I hope it doesn’t happen, but it might. It is a possibility. We’ll be a good team either way, but I am excited for him to be a Blazer, and would love to see him play on this team.
Do you guys think he is really worried about playing time or is that maybe just something he told the media in Europe for the benefit of his fans?
We will never see another player quite like John Stockton. Never.

Same here.
I’ve been worrying about the same thing. Imagine how many championships we would have won with this:
PG – Terry Porter
SG – Clyde Drexler
SF – Jerome Kersey
PF – Buck Williams
C – Arvydas Sabonis
I think this line-up may have severely altered MJ’s career path. I don’t want to be thinking the same things about Rudy 10-15 years from now. Although I’m pretty sure Saba’s delay was more injury than contract related.

No Iron Curtain no more
Spain ain’t 80’s era Soviet Union, with the controlling of the athletes and lack of Euro’s coming to play in the NBA. There were a lot of complicated reasons Sabonis stayed in Eurolandia too long, and while it sucked and may have cost us some championships, I don’t see it happening again. It’s just too different of a situation, in a different era, with too many other Euros and Spaniards to come before Rudy. He isn’t breaking new ground by coming to the NBA, and he has often said the NBA is his goal.
I think Rudy IS worried about playing time; he’s gonna leave money on the table at least initially, and he’ll be worried that he would come over to the NBA and be stuck in a situation where he doesn’t get to play his game. That’s understandable. I’m sure KP is gonna help quell Rudy’s concerns, and they’ll come to an understanding that the Blazers really believe in Rudy, and want to do what it takes to bring him over as soon as possible—plus Rudy will understand that while minutes are earned, he is our only backup SG and our star SG also often plays PG, so the minutes are there for the taking.
As far as the Euro-Media is concerned, I do think Rudy was just being the good teammate and not commiting one way or another about coming to the NBA. Just think of it like a NCAA underclassmen who everyone thinks will declare for the draft; they never say they will while they’re playing in the tournament, they always say stuff like “I’m a [insert college], and I love it here, and all we’re thinking about is winning a championship”. You don’t take those quotes seriously, and neither should you take Rudy’s quotes as the Truth while he is still on his current team and challenging for various tournaments and championships.
I’ll be very surprised and disappointed if Rudy isn’t a Blazer next year, as the Blazer franchise seems to be doing everything they should to let Rudy know they really want him. And if it comes down to money, PA can maybe accidentally leave some money in a secret Swiss account, and accidentally leave the account number and access to the money in Rudy’s locker, and if Rudy, perchance, finds more money than he’d make in Europe accruing interest in some random Swiss bank account, what;s the harm? I mean, PA is sloppy with his bank accounts and if Rudy just happens to FIND it, it’s not circumventing the rookie pay scale in any way.
They’ll make it work.

Paul better not be sloppy
I don’t want us to lose 3 1st round picks (ala Joe Smith). Paul should be very discrete…in fact I will hold Rudy’s money for him. I officially offer to be Paul’s valet for a multi-million (anually) contract and for a nominal fee (about 30%) I will then foward the money to Rudy’s father.

We have stolen the KP´s bag to discover his secrets and share them with you. We actually hit the car running away from the law. He will trade for Calderon, but we agree about not to talk about the players we will give in the trade. Rudy is signed and the contract includes to keep the secret to the end of the Jonventut´s season. He has been following Gallinari in Italy before he has come to Spain. He he has Westbrok in his book. He tries to go up in the draft paying to a Haitian Wizard. He likes Spanish wine, Spanish women and jamón Ibérico. And he has Blazersedge as his favorite site.

...things work out well with Rudy Fernandez but I don’t really like the way things seem to be playing out. I’m tired of the non-commitment. 1st it was “not ready to give an answer” then it was 90% sure. Coming to the NBA should be a big priority or none at all. Either he wants to play in the NBA or not. Maybe some things are getting lost in translation, what’s spanish for make a choice Rudy?

He's gonna do a sign & trade
He’s gonna tell KP that he doesn’t want to play for the Blazers because we already have a starting SG (Roy). So KP will arrange for a trade with a team that has more room for Rudy in their starting line-up. That team will take Rudy and our first round pick. We’ll get a pick that lies somewhere in the 5-8 range, and we’ll use that pick to draft Westbrook.

Westbrook is not that good
He’s not worth it. I’d get rid of Rudy if we could get Rose, but that’s it. I know you’d have to package some other players. Rudy’d be a high pick this year. He’s ACB’s best, which KP said is better than any other league. Does that include the NCAA? I guess it would

No way we swap Rudy and pick for westbrook, but maybe rose or Mayo? I doubt the top teams (pick wise) would do it though.

How 'bout straight up Rudy for the 8th pick?
Could KP possibly get the number 5-8 pick for Rudy straight up? Or how ‘bout Rudy and some other asset? Can we move up high enough to take Rose? What if we include Sergio and the number 13?
How’ bout Sergio, Rudy and the number 13 to the Sonics for one of their excess stiffs (Elson, Swift, Sene or Petro) and the number 2?

If we didn't own Rudy's rights...
...everyone would be talking about him being in the 1-3 pick. He has accomplished things that no other player in Europe ever has. All the MVP’s, all the gaudy statistics. Remember how easily guys like Andrea Bargnani and Darko Milicic rocketed to the top of the draft? The media right now says he could quite possibly be the best player to ever come out of Europe, definitely better than Bargnani (selected #1 over LMA, Roy, and Rudy Gay, to name a few). No way we give him up for anything less than the 1-3 pick.

Hmmm...
Best player to ever come out of Europe? That’s pretty slick marketing, my friend. Trade him for a 1-3 pick? Wow. Really? Barn-yawn-ee ain’t much so sayin’ Rudy is better ain’t sayin’ much. Sayin’ Rudy is a 1-3 pick? Maybe not, my friend. That would mean some teams would realistically consider taking him ahead of either Rose or Beasley or maybe even both! That can’t be. I have a hard time seeing any team that would even consider swapping Rose or Beasley for Rudy. Maybe the number 3, but not 1 or 2. Is that where Rudy would go in this year’s draft? Number 3? Hmmm.

Top 2? Nah.
Rose and Beasley are much, much safer picks. He could very well be the best player out of Europe since Dirk, though, and pretty much every scout is very high on every aspect of his game aside from strength (he’s a string bean) and likely defensive problems.
If a GM fell in love with him like KP has, I could see him going 3, but because he isn’t 7 feet like a Bargnani he isn’t as much of a curiosity—he’s accomplished a lot more at a much younger age than any recent Euro player though. But you’re totally right… he ain’t a #1 pick this year, with two guys who are pretty much sure fire stars.
I think saying he’s a lock to be a lottery pick this year would be a high compliment for a guy drafted #24 just a year ago. After the year he’s had, I think it’s a fair assessment.

Even if you're right
Right now, no GM would take Rudy over Beasley. He’s considered too much of a lock, AND he’s a big man.
I don’t know enough about him to predict one way or another. Being another Antoine Walker is pretty strong words, and most seem to think this is a strong draft with 2 sure fire stars in Beasley and Rose… with the type of numbers Beasley put up as a Freshman, the only thing that could hold him back seems like his attitude. They were better than Durant type numbers, wadn’t ‘dey?
Well, we’ve all heard the character issues type rumours about the kid. Sometimes those are accurate, sometimes they’re misunderstood. Since I don’t know why those rumours exist, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Even if we win the lottery, I know we’re not taking Beasley unless we’re doing a major deal trade. So, I don’t worry too much about him.

KP recently said
that Rudy would definitely be a top five pick this year. I would guess #3.
To get Rose for him, we’d have to give up more, but perhaps not as much as some people think. We might be able to get the rights to Mayo or Bayless in a straight swap for him.

KP has European Connections….
Are you seeing other NBA people at games and do people recognize who you guys are when you’re over in Europe?Buchanan: We do see other NBA people at games; other GMs, other scouts. The basketball world may be spread out a lot, but it’s really not as disconnected as people might think. The GMs of teams over here know who Kevin is and Kevin knows who they are. Kevin played over here, so he obviously knows a lot of people over here as it is. The fact that he’s general manager of the NBA team, people recognize him here at games. Even fans will recognize him.
Kevin Pritchard: I’m really big time!
Buchanan: Kevin says he’s really big time.
In most games, all the NBA people sit in the same section. Even the players know who most of us are and that we’re there to scout because we’re usually seated in the same section.

We left on Friday and we’ve seen a couple of games already. Going to Barcelona tomorrow and we’ll be with Rudy for the next couple of days starting tomorrow.

Who's the last 24th pick in the draft
That had this much hype? He’s European and the 24th pick, my magic eight ball says, “meh.” Europeans don’t always end up being super cool and 24th picks are never super cool. I think we should expect about 1 rebound, 4 points, and 1 assist a game from him. We should concentrate on hyping Oden.

Here you go...
Tony Parker 28th overall
Manu Ginobili 57th overall
Jose Calderon (undrafted)
Zaza Pachulia 42nd overall (yeah I’m reaching)
Anyone I missed? I don’t think Rudy’s draft position is a very good indicator of what type of player he’ll be. No one knew much about him last year. He is the only player to come out of Europe to win not one but two Copa del Rey MVP awards. That being said, I’m way more excited about G.O., it’s just that there is no questions surrounding him right now about whether or not he will be a Blazer next year.

I’m 80 billion times more excited for ODEN, and while I’m optimistic about Rudy and like what I’ve seen/read, I’m gonna file him away mentally as a sweet cherry on the top of our championship sundae that can make everything go a lot easier if he works out. Oden is the ice cream, the heart of any sundae, so I’m ultra super duper excited to see him out on the court and growing playoff beards and dunking on people so hard that any little kids watching are suddenly sterile.

Pah
None of those guys were 24th.
24 = 3 * 2 * 2 * 2.
Notice there are 3 2s there. So you’ve got a group of 3, and a 3—2 3s, in other words. But one of those 3s is 2s, so you multiply 3 * 2 and you get 6. This starts to get scary, when sixes start to show up and you’ve got a group of 3. The fact is, 24 numerically matches up, using the proper jscot attribution formula, with 666. And the pick was used on a Euro.
I know this is what Tom was talking about, because he mentioned his magic eight ball, and 8 = 22*2.
I’ve never bought into the Rudy hype, either. That one game, he scored like 24 points in only 8 minutes and then sat out the rest of the game. What kind of an attitude is that? Some team player. Didn’t even take his fair share of garbage time. And notice, it was EIGHT minutes—22*2. This is actually a little scary….

It’s not 22*2, it’s 2 * 2 * 2. For some reason, when you leave the spaces out, it leaves out an asterisk and turns things bold.
This 24 / 8 stuff is so evil, it has taken hold of the software to try and prevent the truth from being revealed. But I will not be defeated.

He wasn’t able to come over right away, which always drops your draft stock, and it was up in the air WHEN he could come over.
Plus, since the draft, he’s blown Eurolandia away with his basketeering ability and all the awards and tournaments he’s won. I like how our buddy Alfredo described him, as the Kobe of Europe… in the sense people either love him or hate him. That’s awesome.
