Paul, Chris

Why isn't this guy a Blazer?????

OK, this isn't a trade for a Paul post, I simply need to speak my mind.....

.......THIS CAT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I'm turning into a big fan watching him play in these playoffs. They may not win this series (they will), but he's just shredding Dallas. I hope Roy makes a similar jump next season. He doesn't have to become a Super Duper Star, but really I just hope watching Roy next year (his 3rd, like Paul), he shows the same understanding of the game and comfort in reading and dissecting defenses. Paul was good last year (like Roy this year) but he's stepped his game up to the next level. He recognizes what's being sent at him and calmly decides how to beat it.

Roy's development is similar to Paul's in that he was good his first year. Second year they both get doubled and have defenses designed to stop them and they both surpassed expectations. I hope Roy takes that next step next year and get's that consistency. I'm sure we all do. And I'm sure he will.

hmm

why can’t NO win it all? They are doing pretty damn well now and are way above everyones expectations as well. It’s not like we are the only team destined to win.

Like Philthy says...

What makes you think that he has better opportunities with Portland than with NO?

Seems to be doing pretty well right where he is.

we'll see

Put em up against the Lakers or Spurs during the playoffs and see what happens. Chris Pauls is unbelievable, but he’s also shredding a weak Dallas team who seams to have completely lost it’s chemistry and is softer that fresh marshmellows.

by mark twain on Apr 23, 2008 8:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Greg Oden, Brandon Roy, and maybe LMA

Those are three guys that many are confident will be far superior to Chandler, West, and Stojackavic. Add in guys like Fernandez and Outlaw, and you could see Paul’s assists going even higher. PA is willing to spend to win, NO not so much. Paul carries the Hornets right now. WIthout him, they don’t make the playoffs. They compete at the top level, but they’re still in for a rough ride. The competitive outlook for Portland with Paul on the team looks super duper. It’s one of those dream team scenarios.

Simply, the Hornets aren’t going to get much better, the Blazers are going to get better than the Hornets are now.

That said, I’m not sure there’s enough for Paul to jump ship. I hope so, but it’d be an incredibly tough choice for him

The Hornet's are not going to get much better?

Seeing as how they had the second best record in the Western Conference, I think it’s safe to say they don’t have to get a whole lot better. If this season is any indication, they are already there.

There’s no way we can get him, at least any time soon. I just had to gush my feelings for the guy’s game. I’m really enjoying this series so far, and see flashes of Paul in Roy’s game, or at least like I said, they’re development’s similar.

Paul in 2009?

It will be much more risky going about it this way (singing CP3 as a free agent in 2009) but it’s the ONLY way we have him, Roy, LMA, and/or Oden on the same team.

this has been a message from: "The People's Alliance to Keep Comment Boards Sucka Free"

by bforsythe on Apr 22, 2008 6:52 PM PDT reply actions

Just a reminder

Paul will be a restricted free agent, which means that all New Orleans has to do to keep him is match another team’s offer. They will give him a max contract anyway, so it’s impossible for any other team to sign him. He could try to force a trade, but there’s no reason to think he would want to, or that NO would let him get away with it.

by pualo on Apr 22, 2008 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

but if Allen so rich

and he knows that if we bring Paul, we will win atleast one ring, cant he just buy Chris. Like if u want something realy bad u would pay double. Just offer him double what NO would give him and then if NO matches it ,they wont have the money to pay other players, and Chris Paul would ask for a trade because there wont be other good player to help him?

by RipCity on Apr 22, 2008 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Max Salaries

Don’t forget that the NBA is has a unique salary structure in that there is a maximum salary that a player can earn, and that maximum salary is higher for the team that he is currently playing for than for some other team. Also the salaries for the team need to fit within the league salary cap rules.

This differs for other sports like football where there is no player maximum salary but there is a cap on team salaries, or in European football where teams can buy and sell a player’s services outright and pay him as much as they want as well.

by tingeyga on Apr 22, 2008 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

LOL

if Allen is so rich? He is the richest owner in the NBA…but just because he is rich doesn’t mean he will want to lose money. So…if we are winning and he overspends for Paul I’m 99% sure that everything Blazers related will cost A LOT more. Plus there are rules in the NBA regarding contracts and salary caps…there is a max amount that CP3 can make and the Blazers can’t offer more than that max, even with the richest owner.

by bow4meow on Apr 24, 2008 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Plan of action to acquire CP

If Chris paul really wants to leave as a restricted free agent, then want we should do is offer him the max but for 1 year with noi options. That way if N.O. matches the deal (they will), then next year CP would be a true free agent to go where ever he pleases. That would be the year we offer a max contract multiple years or do a sign and trade with N.O.

by NWfan on Apr 23, 2008 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice try.

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#36

Any offer to a restricted free agent must be for at least 2 seasons. If the player’s original team made a maximum qualifying offer, then our offer sheet must be for at least 3 seasons. Not including option years.

by bfan on Apr 23, 2008 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Blame Sebastian Telfair

If not for the organization thinking that Bassy was going to be the PG of the future, Chris Paul would already be a Blazer. The Blazers had the #3 pick in the 2005 draft, but traded it to the Jazz for the #6 pick (Martell) and the #27 pick (Linus Kleiza who was later packaged with a 2nd rounder for Jarret Jack).

by tingeyga on Apr 22, 2008 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Or maybe we would have Deron Williams?

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

Give Canzano credit- he wrote a column saying that we should draft the B.P.A. and that it was Paul.

Deep Pockets...

I agree something would have to happen to sour their relationship in NO, but their ownership group can’t afford the luxury taxes like Paul Allen can. If CP3 believes that NO will only be able to afford to surround him with middling contracts (similar to what is happening to LeBron) a sign and trade could happen. I’m an optimist.

As much as I love CP3, I wouldn’t give up Roy, LMA, and Oden for him (which, looking back, is what I feel would have ended up happening if we’d drafted him). I’d rather find the next great point guard to play with the team we have.

this has been a message from: "The People's Alliance to Keep Comment Boards Sucka Free"

by bforsythe on Apr 22, 2008 7:03 PM PDT reply actions

Basically,

if we’d have taken Paul, we would have been too good to draft those three guys, but not as good as our current roster will be someday. It’s tough to watch CP3 running around doing what he’s doing right now while our guys are already on vacation…but our time is coming. KP will make this work, make this the best team in the league, with or without CP3. He can’t get every bright young star, but so far he’s getting as more than anyone else.

by Philthyanimal on Apr 22, 2008 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Roy cannot match Paul's productivity

Paul plays much faster, has the ball in his hands all the time, and frankly, plays harder for longer stretches. You always know when Paul is in the game, sometimes Roy loafs around the court until he decides to “take over”.

So yea…I love BRoy, but I’d trade him for Paul in a heartbeat.

And there’s is absolutely, positively ZERO chance Paul becomes a Blazer via Free Agency in 2009. Hornets can offer more money and plays on a great team already.

I doubt we'll get Paul...

but we can at least make certain that NO will have pay him a max deal, cutting into what they can afford to give the other positions. This would be good enough for me b/c it hurts a (potential) post-season rival.

And he’ll definitely deserve a max deal after this year, if he stays in NO for less then he deserves to retire as a Hornet.

by Devenex on Apr 22, 2008 8:19 PM PDT reply actions

I don't know why most Blazer fans are Paul fans

The guys is going to be a huge rival for many years to come. He’s not on our team and will never be. When his rookie contract is up the guy is getting PAID. Hornets fans love him as much as we love Roy. Would we trade Roy? Dont even need to answer that. In conclusion, Paul sucks, go Blazers.

Pinballs & TP

I thinks ya win it ALL with Big Men, Defense an Scorin’ Stars. Learnin’ How to Play Together with a Coach ‘n A Vision.

When I look at how We have done it and All the other winners. This is what I see. We Won It with BW and threatin’ with Ourbonis and Duck tried to hang on. The other rays of hope at Center slipped away.

Their Team Mates I remember were big and Strong. Luke, Lloyd, Buck, Kersey, Grant and ‘Sheed.

Pinball, Train & TP were our PG’s, tough, strong, hard drivin’, they could score and knew the game. Kinda like I hope JJ1 will be and Blakey, Sergio can finesse.

We have had our Star scorers, some in sycn with our Big Men, Clyde and Pippen come to mind.

If GO has a career as good and as hoped for by us PTB Fans. The mix that we have with ‘im could be the greatest of all. I’m not just talkin’ Blazers but in my remembrance of the NBA.

I look at our young Big Men playin’ with GO and see Pryzzy, LMA, Frye, Outlaw and Marty, I believe they will get stronger and wiser over the next couple years. I have seen them develop this year and think it is only the start.

Roy, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! I hope Rudy is joining the PTB. This is such a wealth. I don’t think I have yet appreciated what we have and may not, until time gives me the opportunity to look back, with more understanding. I think the intelligentsias see this clearer than I can.

There is a lot more depth to our Team now, then I have mentioned. I think it will actually take a few more years but they will be very entertaining. Players need to develop and there will be change. I believe that most, if not all of this lays within us. Some of this at the managerial level. I think we are primed for amazing things to happen and Managing this will be of utmost importance.

I am not pining over other Teams Stars. I still have an eye for developing ours and maybe others potential. Then we will “Crush “em” CP3 and any other, that might try to stand in our way.

Paul is small.

He has a couple negatives actually. He is very small, and other than for this year looked to be fragile as well. Dallas isn’t doing it but teams could have good success by posting him up. Look for that to happen before this season is over.

NO is a very good team though. West continues to amaze me, W/O him, I’m not sure where NO would be. Chandler offers a lot and Peja is an outstanding long range shooter. Even with Roy, Aldridge and Oden, they will be very tough for us to beat in the future. For that matter, so will LA for the next few years. And Utah too. This parade of championships many are expecting for the Blazers will be anything but automatic. Actually, to even get to the playoffs next year, I’m wondering who we will supplant. Denver I guess but I think they will be better with Nene back and defense will likely be a much larger focus for them next year. Maybe Dallas.

But back to the subject at hand. A lot of this love (maybe overboard love) for Paul right now is based on the last two games where he certainly has looked outstanding. But there is a lot of playoff action ahead. I’ll admit here that pre-season I picked Dallas to win it all. Was I wrong or what?! Just look at their starting line-up last night. Kidd (over-the-hill), Stackhouse (over the hill), Josh Howard (who I personally think is overrated), Dampier (adequate at best) and Dirk (their only high quality player -I like Terry though but he’s not a starter). So I guess it’s not surprising that the Hornets are stinging them.

by TwoDeep on Apr 23, 2008 8:37 AM PDT reply actions

Paul is great ...

But I’m not worried about New Orleans …

Peja-31 in June (and already fragile).
West-28 in August.
Bonzi-32 in September.
Peterson-31 in August.

These guys have a couple of years at best before they fall off, West maybe a couple more. And when they pay Chris Paul, they’ll be up hard against the luxury tax for several years in a row. For a team that already has attendance issues and probably loses money, they won’t want to pay that tax.

The Blazers on the other hand, have young stars in place, with the opportunity to add a closer next summer via free agency or trade. Plus we have an owner who doesn’t care about the tax. We are going to be VERY good for MANY years to come. Dare I say … better than New Orleans?

I’m more worried about Utah and the L*kers in the next few years, but I’m not worried too much about them either. If we play our best and stay healthy, I don’t think anyone can stop us in the years to come.

It's not that we wouldn't have gotten Roy in that draft

If we’d drafted Paul. It’s that we wouldn’t have gotten Oden. We likely would still have gotten Roy or Gay or somebody. We’re fine, our cup runneth over and all that.

by begottenson on Apr 23, 2008 9:25 AM PDT reply actions

Before y'all start lovin' Paul

Remember that before he was drafted he publicly stated that he did NOT want to join the Blazers. And let’s also recall that in a college game he punched someone in the gut, and he’s been known to snipe at teammates. Maybe that’s just him being competitive and feisty, or maybe he just isn’t real pleasant to deal with. Would he fit into the wonderful team chemistry that these Blazers enjoy? Who knows?

Still, Roy and Paul would have been a Hall of Fame backcourt. Oh well, you can’t have every great player. As long as GO makes a full recovery and proves to be as durable as Paul, I’m thrilled with who we have on this team.

by MiledAnimal on Apr 23, 2008 9:53 AM PDT reply actions

Paul wanted to come to Atlanta though

Paul is on record of saying that he wanted to go to the Hawks, which says to me that he would like to play anyplace where he could have been successful.

Also him sniping at teammates in and of itself isn’t that big of a deal as Jordan was one of the biggest teammate sniper-at-ers ever. Jordan also punched Will Perdue in the face during practice.

How great would Josh Howard look on the Blazers at SF?

As for Dirk, he wouldn’t fit on our team, but Dirk would be a Gasol-like asset for any team that already has a star who outranks him. That’s because Dirk has Sheeditis—lots of talent accompanied by the refusal to be The Man.

His comment that most of the players in the NBA smoke pot doesn’t seem like that much of a news flash to me. Back in 1997, a NY Times article estimated the percentage at 60-70%.

It might not be that exciting

Jason Terry is an upgrade and a good fit alongside Brandon Roy for the next couple of years. Problem is that jet has 4 more years at 9 mil +/-.

We would probably have to include Pryz to make that trade work. Like I said it’s not that exciting. Howard is probably not attainable. Jason Kidd grabs crotches and his 19 mil contract will require Raef & Pryz plus some other goodies. Brandon Bass is a good filler for us, but they probably love him.
