Why get older?

As I have read through several posts about the blazers needing some veteran leadership, I always ask myself the same question. Why get older? Raef is the oldest player on the team at 31, and he will most likely be gone next year. Przybilla  and Blake are each 28, and will most likely be coming off the bench in the future. James Jones at 27 does not necessarily have a future with the blazers. Other than these four players everyone on the roster is under 24. That means a good six years before age becomes an issue for this team. Why bring in a player who is any older than 25 when it just limits the window for the blazers in the stacked western conference.

What We've Got

The core of players Roy (23) LMA (22) and Oden (20), given they stay in Portland for their careers will give us all the star power we need. Roy is already an All-Star and LMA is up for most improved. Not to mention that last years number one pick GO hasnt played a minute yet and is already the front runner for rookie of the year in 2008. On top of these three is the developing Webster (21), who can already shoot and has shown signs of being able to get into the lane and finish. He has made great strides this year and between Martell and Travis (23) SF has potential and depth. This leaves one position on the floor.

PG Situation

Right now at the point we have Steve Blake (28), Jarret Jack (24), and Sergio (21). To make room for another guard one of these guys would have to leave.  Most people agree that Steve Blake is a solid backup but not the guard who will lead the blazers to a championship. Sergio will likely stay until Rudy comes and gets comfortable, this leaves Jarret Jack. Jarret is a good free throw shooter and can get into the lane but is also turnover prone. He would be my choice for the one out the door. As far as a starter is concerned, we do not need to add age.

Don't

Talk of bringing Jason Kidd to Portland scared me, we do not need a thirty some year old point guard. even Calderon is 27 the Blazers have no reason to add "veteran leadership". Brandon Roy is the unquestioned leader and bringing in veterans only limits the future. By veterans I mean any player who is over the age of about 25 or 26.

The Talent is Young

Guards around the league who fit the profile are limited. Guys like: Derron Williams, CP3, Raymond Felton, and Devin Harris. There are a few more out there but these are the young guys who come to the top of my mind. No question getting any of these guys would be great, but, getting them is the hard part, we don't want to give up any of the big three. We could try to work a deal with Raef's contract, picks, and a few role players but we also don't want to let great talent get away. Our best shot at picking any of these guys up barring an unforeseen trade  would be in next years free agency trying to pick up D. Williams or CP3. For this reason it is not worth breaking up the team's core to go after someone this off season.

Draft

Instead of rushing to a decision and making a rash move this off season  we can look to the draft for a prospective guard of the future. I know we already have Jarret and Sergio developing but we could move up a few spots by combining our pick with a second rounder and some of our bench, including Jarret Jack. In the case we wind up in the 6-14 zone we could end up striking gold like we did with Roy or, we could have a year to figure out that whoever we draft doesn't fit. If we don't hit the lottery and pick up Rose or Bayless( I don't think we should take either Mayo or Gordon because they aren't true points with good pass first mentality, I know Bayless fits in this category as well but i think that had a little to do with his coaching this last season) The guards in the 6-14 range will include; Augustine,Lawson, Collison, and Westbrook.

Why Westbrook

Outside of a top pick, which Rose is the obvious option, and then Bayless in the the top 5 I think Westbrook is by far the best of these options. When comparing him to the others he has better size, defense, athletic ability, and finishing ability. Other than his outside shot his game has very few weaknesses. He also has a huge upside, he is a lock down defender. He played as good of defense on Rose as anyone in the country and took Mayo out of their game. He also was the only guard (who doesn't play for Kansas) with success against the bigger defenders where all of the other options had trouble.(Memphis/Kansas D)

I like your premise...

getting older really isn’t that important to me. Getting younger really isn’t important either. Now getting better (and better in the long run), that’s the key. And of course, I will continue to suppose, recommend, and debate, but in the end, I trust that KP will lead us in the right direction- older or younger.

Westbrook

I think it is important to note that Westbrook improved immensely while on the bench for UCLA (from potential second-round pick to lottery). This might play a role in KP’s thinking since there probably won’t be a lot of time for him and the fact that he can improve with out a lot of playing time would make him a valuable asset.

The only thing is

We have been developing young players for the last 3 years and will continue to do so. Why in the world would we want to start over with another now. We should (and we will I think) find a way to bring in a player who can play now. Not three years from now. Our window is opening now and we need someone who will get thru to the next level. We will have Rudy (rookie), Oden (rookie) and the last thing we need is another rookie especially at PG.

agreed

i agree with you but there is no one in the current free agent pool and making a trade for someone without giving up one of the big three would be very hard. that is why we can draft a point guard and if they dont come out as a star we can pursue CP3 and D. Williams and any other free agents or trades in the 2009 off-season when we have alot of cap room

Harris or Westbrook

My choice would be to try to either get Devin Harris from NJ or try to get Westbrook in the draft. I feel like Westbrook is a younger Harris. If can’t get either of them I think I would trade the pick and stick with what we have.

Of course I’d love Rose if we won the lottery, but that seems unrealistic.

You better hope NJ gets lucky

If you really want Harris, you better pray that NJ gets the second pick and has to pick Rose. If they win the lotto they have PG and PF set. If they get 3rd or stay where they are, I see no way they let Harris go. (He’s my first, second and third choices for off season moves, but alas, I can’t see why they’d let him go.)

I agree mostly

but when was there talk of Jason Kidd to Portland? and if you don’t consider Mayo or Gordon true point guards (which they aren’t) then how can you say Bayless is?

bayless is not but i like his style better, this is mostly a personal preference
but both mayo and gordon had assist to turnover ratios less than 1
not what you are looking for in a guard on this team bayless had less turnovers and more assists than both mayo and gordon

-rumors about kidd came around before his trade to dallas

Westbrook is a head down dribbler

He will make Jarrett Jack look like god’s gift to court awareness. That said, I like Westbrook as a back-up who can play the other guard spot when Roy is initiating the offense. Westbrook is good for defense and fast breaks, but I think he could be a disaster as point guard in a half court offense.

he still averaged more assists and less turnovers with the same or better competition than bayless mayo and gordon

Very good, nice first post!!

Hitting hard right out of the gates. This has been my contention all along. KP has said that we do not want to be a “good” team (see Nuggets, Jazz, Houston) he wants to be a dynastic team, think Detroit or San Antonio recently.

To that extent I see that he is looking long term, 3-4 years, and while getting a vet would help in the short run, IF we can get a young PG and develop him into what the team needs we would be able to stretch out that championship window for another 2-3 years. True we will not have as much success in the next 2-3 years but we will not be competing for the title in 2-3 years so we have that time to develop our new player into a championship starter.

That is why I have been pretty adamant about hanging on to our 13th this year and mortgaging our future 1sts 09-11 (yes I know they cannot be traded in conncurent years) and some of our bench to move up in this years draft and grab a great player, as this should be the last time that we will have a chance to grab a top 10 pick in the next century.

We have to be patient as I know KP is and Nate is as much as he can be as a coach. The big 3 (KP, PA and Nate) are settled in for the long run and in year 2 we already have a 41-41 record.

Sit back crack a Widmer open and enjoy the next decade of Blazer basketball because we will not be under .500 again this decade.

Even if we trade up

Would we actually be able to get a player who is significantly more useful to us than we could get with the 13th pick? The way I see it, we would like to get a point guard that is good at defense and has a pass-first mentality. There are only 2 guards projected to be in the lottery that would meet that description: Derrick Rose, who we won’t be able to get, and Russell Westbrook, who might drop to the 13th spot anyway. Darren Collison and Mario Chalmers, players who will almost certainly be available when we pick, also meet our criteria and have the additional benefit of being excellent 3-point shooters. They are a bit older than Westbrook and might not have as much “upside,” but they are also more polished and more likely to be able to contribute right away. I don’t think we need to spend an arm and a leg trying to move up when the players that fit best with our needs can be had later in the draft.

Hmm

if we choose westbrook…I would hope that we would expect him to be a backup. I for one do not want to waste anymore time developing players for a couple years only to trade them and see them flourish under other teams. The goal in getting older is because we want to win now…we cant afford to wait 3 or 4 years for our pick to pan out and win then. If our plan is to draft a defensive PG and he could come in on special assignment from game to game…then yes that’d be worth it. But if we are going to try to move up in the draft to select a PG of the future, unless that person can play NBA level from day 1 like CP3 and DW…then I don’t think its worth it.

Win now

Weird stuff happens. Players get injured, leave as free agents, or just plain stop caring. A lot of bad things could happen to derail our “10 year window”. If you have a chance to win now, you have to take it. That means veterans.

Because 12 guys freeze up in the 4th quarter

Well probably 11, Roy showed quite a bit of poise most of the time. Things being what they are in the West, the Blazers are going to run into tough veteran competition for the next several seasons. I suppose the Blazers think adding a few guys who aren’t projects is a good idea. I tend to agree.
