What would you do?
My waking thought this morning was, "what if Monty WIlliams is offered the Knick's coaching job?" It's still a dysfunctional franchise which could be a disaster for a first-year coach. OTOH, does someone looking to break into the NBA coaching ranks have the luxury of being picky? There are seldom prime opportunities for first-.year coaches. Would you leave an organization like the Blazers for the Knicks? Who would you recommend as the new Knicks coach?

Portland's a great "connections" situation for Monty.
Nate’s got the whole Seattle-affiliated connections (which does include three former head coaches, Lenny Wilkins, Dwayne Casey and Bob Weiss),
while Pritchard is, of course, hip-deep in the whole Spurs extended family.
Between those two, I think Monty would end up being considered by a team with a GM who has Spurs- or Sonics-based origins.
THAT’S what he should hold out for.
Spitzer for Knicks head coach.
There, I said it.
Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.
What would he have to lose?
He still has the connections in Portland if he leaves and he gains access to the east coast world of the NBA. He isn’t going to make the Knicks any worse than they already are so the risk of being blamed for their situation is low. Most people’s expectation of the Knicks is that they will be bad for a long time. Any improvement on the floor will get him some recognition and a better opportunity somewhere else.

Get branded as a loser
The thing is that if aren’t successful in your 1st stint as a head coach, you get branded as non-head coaching material and you are lucky to get a second chance, so you need to make sure that the situation is a workable one.
No Way
It is like saying you want to break into show business, then your first big break is staring in a raunchy pornographic movie.
I think the Knick fans need demand, a big splash coach with name recognition. My money is on Mark Jackson just because of all the lobbing other people are doing for him to get the job.

As opposed to...
...a tasteful, sensitive porno? Even feminist porn is pretty raunchy (not that I’ve watched it, of course) – not that there is anything wrong with that if you are over 18.
I agree that the Knicks need a big splash coach – hopefully someone with the huevos to stand up to the owner and players and beat some sense into the ball club. Someone like Nate (but dear God, not Nate – we need him too much).

Personally
I’d take the experience of rebuilding from the ground up and stay until I had a championship or two under my belt. That would give me the entire spectrum and THEN, when I felt like I could learn more faster elsewhere, I’d think about leaving if the head coaching job was my aspiration.
"No way. I love this town. We're gonna bring back the glory years. These boys are my boys. This is my team and my town." - Greg Oden when asked about leaving.
You take it
An NBA head coaching position is an NBA head coaching position. I DO NOT want Monty going anywhere though; he’s my favorite assistant coach by far.
