Sergio interview

What he likes to Sergio Rodriguez (Tenerife, 1986) is playing basketball in Portland and barely makes it. After ending his second season in the NBA, the foundation raises his voice. For the first time there is continuity in the Blazers, a team that portends a great future but gives little confidence and less continuity. Another year and it would be cruel to him.

First, how is morale?

Okay. I help my character: I am quite happy and I try to look at the positive side of everything. It has been a difficult year but I learned a lot and I have matured.

Is not it considers lost?

Not at all. This is not the year that I would have liked to have, but we have to take the positive and think that everything that happens is for the better. This will help me in the future.

Can I thought that the second year could be worse than the rookie?

It has been tough, but no worse or harder than the novice. There have been different circumstances. We have become a winning team and it would be normal to be at playoffs, there have been no injuries, my adaptation has been better, I am happy in the city, with colleagues ...

I mean, what is that not only plays, which is the important thing.
Yes, the only thing is that I have not played what I would have liked.

And if next year is like?

Everything has its time. I have 21 years and these two have been to adapt. Next year, I would cost much aguantarlo.

His boss, Kevin Pritchard, puts an example to Outlaw, who waited five years to begin playing.
My career has been very rapid. I used to do everything fast and I always rush to get there and do your best. Also, because I can and I am able to do so. Outlaw's career has been different. Who knows if in the end will be similar, but neither is it my idea.

What we ask Portland for the coming year?

I ask what I asked him this year and what I asked before: continuity and confidence. With confidence to play better, calmer. And with continuity gives you time to make mistakes and correct them. I like to be many years in Portland, but the first thing is my career and my evolution. If you are unwilling or believe it is not the best for the team will need to find other solutions.

As the transfer request.
We did not request the transfer. I know that several teams asked about me and Portland said no. I stay with me and that Portland has shown. In the future will be what happens.

And it is only the option to remain in Portland?

Not. I took the decision to come to play for the NBA because it was my dream and hopefully be in Portland, but if we do not see other solutions.

Must be hard to say who has a future, but at the moment of truth given three minutes.
He rabies. I would like to play more, because I feel that could do it and help the team, but I must not look back. More work, which is what I have done and what is in my hands.

Pritchard is their main valedor. I think that until you send an inspirational message to the cellphone.
I have a smooth relationship with him and we talk a lot. It has always shown that believes in me.

And the coach, too?

With him I am a professional and correct. I also have sat several times to talk.

What did she say when she was seven matches without playing?
She told me that it was doing well, but after so many parties had realized that the rotation was difficult with three bases. So I stopped going out in the parties ... And seven matches later I went again.

Is it not illogical that disappear after matches in which he played and did well?
Yes, they are things that frustrate, but it is the coach who has to do what is best for the team.

And it is worth being in the NBA to play so little?

Of course. My dream as a child was to be here. I am living the dream of playing in the NBA and deal with major players. We take risks to come, but I think I have done well these past two years and I have shown that I can play. This way I am.

What Sergio is better, two years ago or now?

I am much better than two years ago, especially head. He progressed throughout the physical, mental and appearance in the game. I just lack continuity and confidence. When you have that, it will demonstrate.

Are you changing your game? Is not inhibited because if you lose a ball is going to the bank?
My game has not changed, and when I was given minutes. It is difficult to make my game, which is risky, in three minutes. I can not leave cold and try to do what I do when I am hot.

I imagine he knows that all this makes it difficult to be in the olympics
.
Playing in the NBA is independent of going to the olympics. They will have to decide Pepu and the Federation. They know how to play and what it brings. I have been with the selection since the age of 14 and for me is the team this summer. The choice is yours and respect, but I have a great deal of enthusiasm for going to the Games.

This year the competition is tough: Calde, Cabezas, Raul, Ricky ...
That's good. If not, we would not be champions of the World. I am glad that they go so well.

Do you speak a lot with Pepu?

Yes, we often talk. I called for animarme and to continue. Insurance also would do if it were not the selector.

Sorry for my bad translation

that is the greatest translation EVER

I love the gender bending. My favorite bit:

“Must be hard to say who has a future, but at the moment of truth given three minutes. He rabies.”

by matthewcc on Apr 18, 2008 4:35 PM PDT   0 recs

I'm still trying to figure that one out, too

Johny, don’t worry, overall it’s completely understandable. A few things did get lost in translation, however.

Ah, it appears to make him angry

rather than giving him rabies

by Section323 on Apr 19, 2008 12:00 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks johny!

I like this part:

What did she say when she was seven matches without playing?
She told me that it was doing well, but after so many parties had realized that the rotation was difficult with three bases. So I stopped going out in the parties … And seven matches later I went again.

Sergio stopped going to parties which ultimately helped him find minutes. LOL. Hmmm…Any guesses as to what the parties mean?

BINGO, BANGO, BONGO

parties

is games ,, no parties sorry

by johny on Apr 18, 2008 4:48 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Ahhh--there's a place I messed up the re-translation.

I thought “so many parties” referred to the very full roster, especially so many point guards (I think Taurean Green was still on the roster during those seven games).
And so my re-translation reflects that—I turned “after so many parties” into “with so many players”.

I was a bit swayed by the fact that, in legalese (language used by attorneys in courtroom situations), a “party” is a PERSON involved.
So I guessed that “parties” here meant “people”, in THAT sense.

And I was wrong.

Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

I think the word your tranlting into parties

is actually “partidos”. Partidos in spanish is games, which would make sense if you read the sentance.

Again, I was translating the translation.

Going off what’s in the post, and not in the actual Spanish-language interview.

Twere a fun exercise.

Can someone post the original link to this. If they do I’ll translate it becasue the translation here is god awful. It seem like someone went and copied the orignal article onto one of those free web site translators. (Don’t mean to be harsh, but the truth is the truth)

I believe...

Gracias, Johny. Bienvenido a Blazer’s Edge. (Did I murder Spanish?)

I'm not trying to insult anyone

but this translation is terrible, the more I read it the more i believe this was just put through an online translator. The one below is much much better. Heres some advice for Johny for the next time he wants to translate something; I think you showed that you can understand spanish but were you went wrong in your translation is that you translated it word for word, thats why it sound so bad. Next time do it sentance by sentance, its more important to translate the meaning of the words, or the point of what a person is saying, not the words themself. I hope that makes sense, and that its helpful.

by ggassen85 on Apr 18, 2008 11:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, but the one below is done by a native English speaker, from English

so that’s not really a fair comparison.
You may be right, but we like having international guests, so we tend to be extra nice to them.

Don't be so racist

That is incredibly insensitive and racist to assume that just because someone was born and raised and lives in Spain, that they speak Spanish. It’s the 21st century, BoB, gets with the times…

You are the most racist person ever in the history of the world.

Okay, you’re not THE most racist person. But you’re up there!

When I was in the Navy

I hate to start stories like that. Anyhow, my ship went to San Diego and a group of us went to Tijuana. We walked up on a group of little kids speaking Spanish. One of my colleagues said, “Wow, these little kids are smart, they can speak Spanish.”

How do you know he is a spainard

and if he is, how the hell am i suppose to know that?

by ggassen85 on Apr 19, 2008 3:18 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Because he was posting

in the Rudy thread that Amlmart1 put up and said as much. And granted, you had no way to know that if you hadn’t read the thread. You also had no way of knowing that it wasn’t somebody posting here in their second language, and therefore any efforts they make ought to be commended, or at least not disparaged. We’ll never expand the BlazersEdge empire to all corners of the globe if we scare off our foreign-language correspondents.

I understand...

but really, I dont believe he translated this, I believe that this was put through an online translator. After reading the article in spanish then seeing the translation, to me its pretty obvious that it was put through an online translator.

Tambien yo no queria insultar al Johny, muchas gracias por presentarnos con el articulo. Y que siga mandando nueva information de espana, me encanta que hay latinos jugando en el NBA.

Ouch

Very high on the unintentional comedy scale.
poor Sergio, this isnt gonna help anybody understand his predicament.

by DropstepJ on Apr 18, 2008 9:09 PM PDT   0 recs

All right. I'm gonna attempt to translate the translation.

What Sergio Rodriguez (born 1986, in Tenerife) likes is playing basketball in Portland, and he barely gets to. After his second season in the NBA, the foundation raises his voice. For the first time there is continuity in the Blazers, a team that portends a great future but gives little confidence and less consistency. Another year like this would be hard.

First, how is your morale?
Okay. It “builds character”, as Calvin’s Dad would say: I am quite happy and I try to look at the positive side of everything. It has been a difficult year but I learned a lot and I have matured.

Is all considered lost?
Not at all. This is not the year that I would have liked to have, but we have to take the positive and think that everything that happens is for the better. This will help me in the future.

Do you think that the second year was worse than your rookie season?
It has been tough, but no worse or harder than the novice. There have been different circumstances. We have become a winning team, which normally would mean being in the playoffs, there have been no injuries, my adaptation has been better, I am happy in Portland, with the rest of the team …

I mean, what about the important thing: Playing time?
Yes, the only thing is that I have not had the playing time that I would have liked.

And if next year is the same?
Everything has its time. I’m 21 years old, and I’ve had two seasons to adapt. Next year, I’m gonna need more Stumptown ethiopian harar longberry, and booty-slap.

Your boss, Kevin Pritchard, points to Travis Outlaw as an example, how he waited five years to begin playing.
My career has unfolded very quickly. I used to do everything fast and I always rush to succeed and do my best-and that’s because I can, because I am able to do so. Outlaw’s career has been different. Maybe, down the road, my playing time expands similarly, but that’s not how I’d like it to happen-I’d prefer immediate progress, and a larger role sooner rather than down the road a few years.

What do you ask from Portland in the next year?
I ask what I asked him this year and what I asked before: continuity and confidence: confidence to play better, more calmly. And continuity gives you time to make mistakes and correct them. I’d like to be in Portland for a while, but the first priority is my career and my evolution. If Portland is unwilling to develop me properly, or does not believe that I can develop much further than I have, then I’ll deal with that accordingly.

Have you asked to be traded?
Neither my agent nor I have asked for a trade. I know that several teams asked about acquiring me, and Portland refused to discuss trading me. I’m not looking to leave, and Portland has always looked to keep me. What the future holds—who knows?

Is Portland the only place you would play?
Not. I decided to come to play for the NBA because it was my dream and hopefully be in Portland, but even if it doesn’t work out in Portland, I think I belong in the NBA.

It must be hard to talk about your future in Portland, or any other NBA team, when you’re sometimes in for just three minutes or so.
That sucks massive, big, fat, donkey. I want to play more, because I feel that could do it and help the team, but I can’t be bitter about the past and cling to guns and religion. All I can do is work harder.

Ultimately, Pritchard is in charge. Have you talked to him directly?
I have a smooth relationship with him and we talk a lot. He has always shown that he believes in me.

And coach McMillan?
I am open and professional with him. We’ve talked many times.

What did he say when when you weren’t played for a seven-game stretch?
The Natester told me that it was doing well, but with so many players, he understood that the rotation was difficult with three point guards. So I fell out of the rotation … and seven games later, I was back in the rotation

Did it seem wrong to fall out of the rotation when you were playing well?
Yeah, that’s frustrating, but Nate has to do what is best for the team.

Is it worth being in the NBA when you play so few minutes?
Of course. My dream as a child was to be here. I am living the dream of playing in the NBA and compete with the best players. I took a chance to be here, but I think I have done well these past two years and I have shown that I can play. That’s just how I roll.

Were you better two years ago, before you entered the NBA, than you are now after two years here?
I am much better than two years ago, especially mentally. I’ve grown mentally, physically, and as a player. I just lack consistency and confidence. If I get consistent time and can be confident in my role, I know I’ll come through.

Has your game changed? Do you play more conservatively—is there a higher priority now on avoiding turnovers than on playmaking?
My game has not changed; when I was given minutes; I tried to play the same as I always have. It is difficult to find my rhythm (which is admittedly an aggressive style) in three minutes. I can not come in cold and do what I do when I am hot.

I imagine this all gets in the way of preparing for the Olympics.
Playing in the NBA is independent of going to the olympics. The Spanish team has its own dynamics. They know how I play and what I bring to the table. I have been selected since I was 14, and I’ll be devoted to Team Espana for the summer. They have to respect my choice to play in the NBA, but I’m very enthusiastic about the Olympics.

This year the team is stacked, and very tough: Calde, Cabezas, Raul, Ricky …
That’s good. If not, we wouldn’t be the world champs that we are. I am glad that we’re so strong and deep.

Do you talk to Rudy al lot?
Yes, we talk a lot. He gives me support, and encourages me to persevere.

Thanks!

It was an actual Brian Wheeler call on the radio during a game last season (2006-2007), as reported here at The Bedge.

And yeah: I pretty much inferred a HECK of a lot of what was being said. Could be wildly inaccurate, though. Some “What did he MEAN?” guessing was involved in quite a few places.

Wasn't it Mikey Barretta?

I remember it being talked about here, and I think it was TV play by play man Mike Barrett, or Mikey Baretta as he likes to be called.

I also remember not being sure if it was a dry, understated joke like Mike-1 tends to do, or simply a funny but true misspokenment. I like to think it was on purpose in an accidental way.

And to think our fast break was BETTER this season… yikes. We really suck[ed] at that ‘break fast’ part of basketeering ball.

Y'know what? I think you're right.

Twas from the TV broadcast, not the radio.
Read it here secondhand rather than experience it in person, but . . . I could swear that, when envisioning it, it was more of a dry Barrett image in me head than an exuberant Wheels call.

Jeez--is it really?

I seriously was translating the translation; I don’t know a lick of Espanol, so I wasn’t referring to the actual interview at all.
And, as such, I was DEFINITELY taking liberties with what I believed was being said.

I feel real nervous, like I was attempting to put words in Sergio’s mouth.
I have no desire to do that; he can speak for himself just fine, and I’m glad he did.

It really was more of an exercise in, “Here’s what I THINK he was saying,” without claiming that I really know for sure.

Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

This interview

makes me wish we played Sergio more. He said exactly all of the right things—maybe he didn’t mean them and just plays a savvy media game.

But when I think of myself as a 21-year-old who's experienced tremendous professional success up to the last couple of years, and I'm firmly convinced that I can contribute substantially to my organization, and my organization isn't putting me in a position to succeed, and I'm giving a native-language interview to a reporter basically BEGGING for me to pop off at the mouth about the situation, and I don't do it? I think that shows a lot of maturity.

Poor Sergio. He’s foaming at the mouth with ire!

What he said is something like: “Next year, it would be very tough withstand the same situation”.

by amlmart1 on Apr 19, 2008 1:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah--I punted on that one.

I saw “I would cost much aguantarlo”, had NO idea what “aguantarlo” is (or even might be), and decided all I could discern was “I’m gonna need a lot of [blank]”, and proceeded to fill in the blank with what I’d want, if I were him.

Stumptown Ethiopian harar longberry is the best coffee I’ve ever had.
Booty-slap is . . . well, it’s booty-slap! D-urrr.
