NBA Votes 28-2 to relocate the Sonics

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/basketball/359651_sonicsvote19.html

Two things of note:

  1. Just because the vote went in favor of Bennett et al doesn't mean that the court ruling with regard to the terms of sale will stand.
  2. The two mavericks (pun intended) who voted against the move?  Mark Cuban...and Portland's own Paul Allen!

A sad day for Sonics fans, but I'm proud of Paul Allen (and Mark Cuban, though I'm loathe to admit it) for standing up to David Stern on this issue.

good man paul is.

Despite my own ignorance to the whole deal, I hope they don’t move, but I really don’t care one way or another.
Some have told me before, to imagine it was happening to our team, I respond with a simple, it almost did, but we are still here.

I hope Bennett has to stay in Seattle

for 2 more years and Key Arena is empty the entire time!

Of course PA voted against it

he owns the Seahawks and Sounders. He doesn’t want to piss off his clientele.

I knew Paul Allen would vote against the move but I still did a little fist pump just now when I read the story. I don’t want Seattle to move almost as much as I want the Blazers to win a championship. Actually, probably a little more, Seattle moving is just bad for the league.

I hope

that Las Vegas sweeps in and brings them down.

so

did they decide if the sonics reccords will follow the team if they do move or will they stay in seattle?

by Steve Guttenberg on Apr 18, 2008 1:42 PM PDT   0 recs

stay in Seattle

almighty Clay did concede that.

Not quite

IIRC, that concession would be granted were the City of Seattle to settle and permit the Sonics to break the lease this year.

Thanks to PA and MC

As a longtime Sonic fan who is becomming a Trailblazer fan over the past 2 years, I want to say thanks to Paul Allen and Marc Cuban for voting against the move. While its obviously only a symbolic move (28-2…), I appreciate the sentiment. I was hoping to see an I-5 rivalry grow over the years, but that is only a pipe dream at this point. I’ll be sad to see the Sonics go.

silly NBA owners

I know this would be a democratic way of doing it, but they should ask the Sonic players if they would rather play in Seattle or OK City…instead of asking a bunch of old wealthy guys what they think should happen. In Oklahoma, they will be the joke of the league…unable to hang on to quality people.

Like everyone else, thanks Paul Allen. Too bad you can not own two teams.

Indiana, Cleveland, Utah, Milwaukee?

Is OKC any worse in terms of getting people to stay?

by Section323 on Apr 18, 2008 10:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Utah is the worst

Sacramento is worse than Cleveland or Milwaukee.

Utah

Is actually a pretty nice place if you’re not into the bar scene or people. Actually, there are some okay people here too, but definitely a “quirky” environment.

Still, being surrounded by mountains, the hiking, the sking/snowboarding, and so on is pretty sweet here.

Will they ever move back to Seattle?

The Raiders moved to L.A. and stayed for about ten years, I think. Then they moved back. And the fans were ecstatic when they moved back. They didn’t tell Al Davis to stick it in his ear. Kinda like abused wives.

or like the cleveland browns

which became the baltimore ravens (after the baltimore colts became the indianapolis colts) - the ravens of course won a super bowl…...i disliked them and then disliked them more when someone in star lb ray lewis’ posse stabbed someone to death and lewis was uncooperative and stonewalled the cops.

sports franchises seem to move because they can’t get sweetheart deals and local politicians are unhelpful.

in this case (seattle) the fact that david stern has pronounced so publicly has been a surprise.

situation…a couple of days old, but good nonetheless.

Glad to see Allen vote against it

Whe I heard the news on the ESPN ticker it said 28-2 and I know that Cuban was agains it and was hoping that Allen was against it as well.

I have always liked Cuban, even with his childish acts, and he has a keen business mind. He knows how to create a great product as the Mavs were HORRIBLE before he took them over, I also find it refreshing that he has the balls to call the NBA out about the whole ref thing WAY before the Donahey thing came out.

by SpyderRyder on Apr 18, 2008 10:41 PM PDT   0 recs

It was okayed CONDITIONALLY.

“Pending current litigation.”

Or: They’re allowed to move—WHEN (and IF) all lawsuits are settled, and settled in Bennett’s favor.

These suits ain’t being settled anytime in the next six months, kiddies. That means at least one more season in Seattle, I betcha.

Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

Not if Slade has anything to say about it

He’s not going to let the Sonics go gently into that good night.

Clearing Room For The Blazers Out West

As the playoff picture begins to take shape it becomes clear that the Western Conference is one big game of musical chairs. There are nine viable playoff teams; unfortunately there are only eight playoff spots. For the Blazers to get a spot, one of last year's playoff teams needs to fall off. Someone's going to be caught standing when the music stops. The following are possible scenarios that could derail each team on their quest for playoff glory, helping the Blazers get back to the postseason for the first time since 2003.
