PG/SF. Who goes. Who stays. Who comes. Thinkin'.
Okay, so the big questions seem to be:
1) Who are the "keepers" from this batch of MarWeb/Trout/Frye/Sergio/Blake/JJ?
2) Who will be our long-term answer at point guard and small forward in the starting line-up alongside Roy, Oden and LaMardridge?
And you know, I've never been a fan of a particular train of thought (I'll call it BRAT-Point) until now, but a few things stand out to me:
- Webby was a starter over Trout this year and was good.
- But Trout was also really, really good. Probably as good as MarWeb, maybe better.
- Frye revealed himself as truly Portland all year long, and at the end emerged as undeniably more than good enough to be a major backup.
- But with Oden coming in, and Przy both awesome and contractually retained long-term, Frye has no room at center.
- CERTAINLY, none of our point guards are at the level of Roy, Oden and LaMardridge, as far as playing alongside them.
- POSSIBLY, none of them are even at the level of Trout or MarWeb in terms of who-deserves-those-two-open-starting-spots.
- Trading for a point or wing is not a good/realistic idea; all possible trade acquisitions are either not as obtainable as we'd like, or the price isn't as worth it as we'd like to believe (all our non-Roy/Oden/LMA players for Calderon!).
- As much as we'll have plenty of cap room in the 2009 off-season to sign anyone available, "anyone available" doesn't start for a champion at point or small forward.
To sum up:
1) Everybody already on the roster might be worth keeping.
2) Nobody else might be worth getting.
So after seeing MarWeb prove himself worthy of that starting spot, Trout prove himself worthy of a promotion off the backups, and Frye prove himself worthy of Trout's old spot at back-up power forward alongside Przy, here's the scenario that we've all maybe entertained in the past but perhaps looks a bit better now, especially after Trout and Frye's killer season-ending stretches:
Starters:
Oden at center, LaMardridge at power forward, Trout at small forward, MarWeb at off-guard, and BRAT-Point (Brandon Roy At The Point).
White Unit:
Przy at center, Frye at power forward, James Jones at small forward, Rudy at offguard, Sergio and/or Blake at the point.
(JJ can stay if he wants, but he's battling Blake And The Spaniards (NOT a 60's garage band!) for a White Unit guard spot, possibly hanging with Joshie Mick in Eleventhmanland.)
Don't trade for players now, trade our draft picks (ALL OF THEM) for future draft considerations, don't sign nobody next year, use all of our well-earned cap space on giving out raises. In short, KEEP OUR ENTIRE CURRENT SQUAD OF YOUNGSTERS FOR THE LONG TERM AND ADD NOBODY, not even next year.
I'm not sold on this, of course; actually, I've got a LOT of reservations about doing this. I'm not advocating this so much as I'm pondering it, in need of a Kempload of co-pondering from all y'all. So I wanna lob this out there at this time like a grenade, and see what you all think of the idea.

I want
to give these guys one more year. Yes I would love a top PG in the mold of Deron Williams or Chris Paul. We’ve hashed this out before, and it just aint happening barring another top three pick and we land Rose.
It would be nice to see what these guys can do with the addition of Rudy and Oden. They’ve all gotten better every year. There is still alot for all of these guys to work on but lets get real I would say this team that we have right now has performed way better than expectations.

Starters
What about starting Fernandez instead of Outlaw while returning Martell to his small forward position. Putting James Jones at SG would add size to the white unit while adding helpful scoring punch with Outlaw. This move would also add another ball-handler to the starting lineup, taking pressure off of Brandon Roy. Potentially, all three of our point guards could make a good back up. If Sergio makes significant progress this summer, he might be nice to see when we want to increase the tempo, imagine Jones and Outlaw finishing on the break with Rodriguez. He could choose to get his assist through a thunderous throw-down or a pretty swish from beyond the arc. This lineup certainly has potential, and you don’t want to mess with the current group of players too much, they have good chemistry and simply the insertion of Oden and Fernandez into the starting lineup could propel the Blazers to the playoffs.

Playoffs being key
If we don’t make it next year then we talk about trading some of these guys. Everyone has shown some progress, some more than others. We haven’t seen Sergio really all that much but he still has potential like you stated, they all do. I like the idea of having a white unit that can kill on the fast break.

I'm with ya QP
Excellent analysis, sound conclusions. And I agree: Keep them all except the scrubs. The only quibble I might have is that I think Sergio is borderline scrub and therefore should be considered trade material. LaFrentz, McBob, Sergio, and Wafer—those guys should be offered in an effort to move up in the draft and maybe snag Westbrook, or, with incredible luck, Rose. I would be ecstatic if the only addition this offseason is Rose. Make room for Rose and Rudy. Leave the rest alone.

I want to keep Jack
But I think Blake will be here for a real long time. I also think that Sergio has a space reserved on the roster next season. Nate used Jack to attack the rim and Rudy will fill that roll next year. As much as I love ole’ Jack, I think he’ll be moved.
Next year will be Sergio’s opportunity to be the back up for a season, with hopes that he could be a starter the following year. if he does not progress, then he’s out and all the cap space will be used to grab a starting PG and Blake will become the back up.
Jack will be the Ime of this off season. Still serviceable but in the way of another player’s development.

We will have too many players
Not for roster spots, but too many to give playing time to. We already have a deep team, and we will be adding at least two more players who will deserve time. It doesn’t make sense to have 12 or 13 players who merit significant playing time. Much better to try to package a few of them in a trade for an upgrade.

Trade Jack, Jones, and Sergio
For a good Starting PG. Don’t care who they are, as long as they think pass first and can score when needed, and run a team, and hit the three.
Wait we have Steve Blake and he does all of those things!!! He can start. Hell I’m confused, I don’t know what to do. I’ll just trust K.P.

We are never happy.
We will get a point guard in the draft that will work well with the team and get along with the remaining point guards we’ll have left: Sergio and Blake. Jack is gone.
We’ll see which one will work out as starter and who will be backup and the odd man out will be the garbage time point.
My prediction: Blake is the starter, Draftee/tradee is backup, and Sergio is sadly the garbage time point… again.
Sergio will look good, great even at times, but Nate will bust a blood vessel with his first bad play and bury him on the bench for most of the season, half of you guys will applaud this decision, half will be calling for Nate to be fired.
Blake will shine as the starter up till X-mas with the passing and whatnot to BRoy, LMA and Rudy, but he won’t penetrate to the hoop enough so you guys will want him to be traded and you’ll be calling for his head as well.
The draftee/tradee we’ll get won’t pan out like we would’ve wanted. Not big enough to D up the Baron Davis’ and not quick enough to D up the Chris Paul’s and we’ll be here, in this same position next year, typing away in this same sort of post.
We will never see another player quite like John Stockton. Never.

STUCK
The only people to be traded will be Jack and potentially Frye. They will probably be traded for someone’s expiring contract (do not expect greatness). Raef will stay because of his expiring contract. The blazers draft pick will be bundled together to get probably 2 total picks. Off to free agency is Von and James Jones.
Starters (professional get the job done guys): Roy, LMA, Oden, Blake, and Webster
White Unit (fast, furious, and fantabulous!): Sergio, Rudy, Outlaw, Przy (not that fast), and Frye, Jones, or new guy.
Thanks for the memories to whomever will not be here next year. I really did like this group as a whole.
