The Frye Question
Out of any of our frontcourt players, Channing Frye is the one with the most uncertainty swirling around him. At least since Darius was declared medically unfit.
LaMarcus is set as our PF, Greg Oden is set as the C, and Przybilla will be the most dominant backup center in the league. Besides them, we'll have Martell at the three and Outlaw juggling time between backing up both LaMarcus and Marty.
Then we have the leftover minutes. We'll have the Expiring Contract of Raef LaFrentz getting no minutes and probably McBob still searching for minutes without hope too.
The man we have to turn to, luckily, is already on our roster - Channing Frye. How can there be any discussion about trading him? Even before the last month where he made his big splash, the case seemed obvious. He is a perfect substitute for LaMarcus. He plays a similar game, and is a decent rebounder. It's easy to forget he's been playing out of position for almost the entire season, but it's only because he never talked about it or whined about it. He just went forward and did his work. We saw the fruits of that work this month, as he has been able to dominate games in center position.
Another advantage to keeping Frye is his youth. How are we going to get rid of a third year player that is actually showing tremendous growth despite less than ideal circumstances?
My main reason is more of a personal one, though. He's become a citizen of Portland. He seems like the kind of guy that would want to stay here his entire career and live here afterwards. I mean, the guy said, "Keep Portland Weird," at the end of his post-game interview last night. He's already a local.
It would be a folly to get rid of a guy who does so much already and has the potential to do so much more.

Didn't see it on the front page
And it’s four days old, and my post covers different ground.

Keep Frye!
I think he fits in great, and he gives us 2 complete units:
Unit 1 –
1: Blake
2: Roy
3: Webster
4: Aldridge
5: Oden
Unit 2 –
1: Sergio/Jack
2: Rudy/Jack/Jones
3: Outlaw/Jones
4: Frye
5: Pryzbilla
Plus our lotto pick.

Keep Frye!!!
He’s great off the bench and he loves Portland, what more would we want in a backup PF/C???

I Really hope we keep him
He’s my favorite personality on the team. From his total embrace of the community, to the Channing Frye show on 1080, his blog, and his professionalism. I love the guy.
Plus, remember when he dissed Sacramento? and then they were so angry, that they wrote about it on their blog?
That picture they have of him on there is SO hilarious. If for nothing else, I want him back because of what a character he is.

Ok, that worked!
Here’s the link, anyway, their comments are really funny.

Did anyone read the link comments
I loved how it devolved from bashing Channing to self bashing of Sac-town. Some guy from Stockton (guys admits it is also a pit) totally blows up Sac. Really funny. The boombox belt buckle is quite bizzare….lol

I saw this when he was a knick
He said he was going to an 80’s themed party at UofA.
by Sabonis4Ever on Apr 16, 2008 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He would have been about 6 at the end of the 80s
and probably not yet 6’10”-ish.
So when did he buy that sweatsuit? Maybe with better posture and without the boom box, he would look okay. But that is not a good color.

Frye's really grown on me
I love his post-game comment last night something along the lines of “I don’t care what anybody says, we’re going to play our butts off until the season is over.”
It felt like sort of a backhanded swipe at the comments Roy made after the Sacto game, and there are some comments from Frye in today’s Tribune that are comparable. Not that I’m anti-Roy, but it pleased me that he was willing to gently repudiate our glorious leader when he said something that was clearly amiss.
Frye’s also been one of our steadiest players the 2nd half.
He’s got another year, let’s see how that goes. Right now I wouldn’t part with him.

I'd vote to keep the Blazers weird
...and Frye is just the guy to do it—all by himself! I love his personality and his versatility; he’s truly a “buffet of goodness.” Having said that, I hope we don’t get burned by his end-of-season push. That’s happened before, remember.
Joel hit the boards all season long; Channing just came on towards the end. I’m delighted to see he can do it, and I want to think it’s the result of all his hard work with Bayno and in the weight room. But I can’t entirely erase the memory of all those games earlier in the season when Channing was MIA in the paint. I hope that wasn’t the “real” Channing Frye.

He's perfect for this team in so many ways.
Personality, skills, position, etc … He’ll fit perfectly next to Joel on the second unit, and can easily step in as a productive starter should LMA go down with injury (knock on wood).
He’s perfect for this city, too, and KP knows that.
Thankfully he’ll be a restricted FA, so we’ll have the right to match, and I don’t think he’s shown enough for other teams to pay through the nose to get him. If I had to guess, he’ll be extended at a reasonable rate and be a part of this team for a long time.
KP knows his value, though. And if he gets traded, you better believe it’s for something good …

Channing is great!
I’d be more bummed about losing Channing right now than just about anyone outside of the big three (Marty might be the only exception). He’s just getting better and better.
Good playoff teams have multiple bigs, usually at least three good ones. If we have Greg, LMA, Prz and Frye we are gonna be so loaded up front it’s ridiculous.
Plus Channing will play very well with Greg too when LA is in foul trouble or “whatever.”

I said in other post
but I will say again: this year we lacked depth in the frontcourt. Why get rid of what can be a strength next year.
Also, if you upgrade in talent, will you get the same quality person and how will they deal with playing behind LMA?

nah, let's explore
while frye certainly is a nice person and a quality nba player, if he is one piece towards acquiring a very good point guard, i say make the trade. while the thought of keeping 4 quality big men (5 if you count Troutlaw) is intriguing, there are so many teams that don’t have 3 good big men. If the Blazers attempt to get a PG from one of these teams, they’ll prolly ask fir a big man in return, as well as some other pieces, like draft picks and Jack. Nobody wants to get rid of Frye just for the fun of it. But, if he can bring the point guard the Blazers need in return, the Blazers have to make the move.

Who do you suggest they trade him for?

I too decree
That his portland-centric personality has really grown on me.
He is the first player in a long time that Im willing to overlook his basketball talents for his role he could serve in the community and locker room.
Im not saying that I dont like his game in fact I think he has a sweeter outside stroke than L.A. at this point.
It’s just…...how many soft “perimeter” oriented power forwards can you have?
I think the perfect bench PF for us would be a Jason Maxiell, Paul Milsap, Craig Smith type banger, intimidator.

Bye Bye Frye...
................................... He advanced from the ranks of the useless to “guy with trade value” in the last 10 games, but I am not fooled. I believe the first 70 games are more reflective than the last 10. Frye is NOT good at the low post, he is a perimeter jump shooter.
Gimme a low post rucker like Kevin Love—that’s what this team needs. NOT another perimeter shooter.
Frye has become a valuable trade chip for a PG, which is great news for the Blazers.
I have a hunch KP will differ and will keep him around. But we’ll see; KP is a former PG himself and Nate is a former PG, so that’s a position that’s going to draw a lot of attention.
