New Blog: World Soccer Digest for Soccer Fans!

Welcome to the new Blazer's Edge and SB Nation

Hey Blazer's Edge,

Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei, and I'm here to help you get adjusted to the new home we've built for you. If you have questions or trouble with the new system, post a comment in this thread and myself or one of the team (lovitt, sixfoot6 or odacrem) will try to point you in the right direction.

Before we begin, I want to let you know that Blazer's Edge is one of the first blogs in the SB Nation family to make this transition. We still consider this a beta platform, so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. We hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter at bugreport@sbnation.com.

Please take a few minutes to read about what's new below. But if you just can't wait to jump in, here are some quick things to check out:

  1. Sign up for your SB Nation network account and claim your old blog accounts
  2. Once you're logged in, press your  Z  key in any thread with new comments
  3. Explore your dashboard and setup your profile
  4. Read the guide to the new FanPost editor
  5. Install the FanShot bookmarklet and post videos to Blazer's Edge from YouTube or images from Flickr
  6. Click the "Rec" button on posts and comments to help other people find the good stuff.

What Has Changed

SB Nation Network Accounts - the Big Change

Readers across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account to use on every SB Nation blog. To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new, since every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition. We tried to be as fair as possible in deciding who gets to keep which name, using a formula that takes into account length of membership and frequency of activity.

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs, but we don't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain friendly communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog in order to participate. It's a two-click process, but it does means accepting each blog's community guidelines. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.

You can claim old accounts from multiple SB Nation blogs, and your new username will be retroactively attached to all your old comments and diaries. So now you'll be able to access all your writings from your single profile page... like magic.

To get started, click here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.

FanPosts (the Section Formerly Known as Diaries)

We changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for fans, and these are the blog posts we make. So we call them FanPosts. When you're at a bar telling someone to check out your online sports opinions, you don't have to suggest they read your diary.

FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - we include your avatar to give more credit for the time you spend writing great posts. The new post editor has a WYSIWYG view that provides easy formatting. It also auto-saves drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you compose a post within the web browser. And you can now associate teams, players and games with your posts: these tools promote your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.

The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, in HTML mode the new editor doesn't auto-create a new paragraph from two line breaks. But it does offer a whole array of new features. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips, and take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.

IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember to wrap <p></p> tags around each paragraph so your text doesn't run together.

Visual Redesign

This one is probably the most obvious change of all. Like other major websites working to improve readability for their audience, we've adopted a fixed-width layout optimized for the 1024 x 768 resolution used by the majority of Blazer's Edge and SB Nation network users. Use the switcher below the user menu if you prefer the wider layout designed for 1280 monitors. We've introduced a top navigation bar with quick links into old and new sections of the site. We also polished a few edges, made some things larger, others smaller and moved a few boxes here and there. More changes and adjustments to come.

Search

We've completely replaced the old search engine with a new one. We're excited to make it easier to find old posts and comments, but we've only taken our first pass on the tools we're offering. We're focused on making search even better than what you had before, so please know that we're aware search is missing key features and we're working on it.

What's New

Schedule, Scores, Stats and Roster

Blazer's Edge now has all the basic information about the Portland Trail Blazers and hundreds of other teams. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, and as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step, so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so. We now have special pages that aggregate all blog posts written about games, players and teams.

Recommending FanPosts

Some writing deserves more attention and more conversation. If you want to bump a FanPost up to the top and keep it there for awhile, just click the 'Rec' link under the body of the post. When a FanPost receives enough recommendations it will make the recommended list.

Auto-refreshing Comments

You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.

As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.

Recommending Comments

Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.

Flagging Comments

To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. Only moderators can see those flags.

FanShots

Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote, but don't need a full FanPost. We've got you covered: FanShots let you share YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.

For those of you who are experienced internet hunter-gatherers of Portland Trail Blazers material, install the bookmarklet onto the links bar of your browser and share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.

Archives

It's much easier to find that post about a certain deadline trade or prospect retro feature. You can browse by year and month.

Avatars

Upload an image so folks can see your custom avatar on your profile, your FanPosts, and all your comments.

Network Profiles

Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs where you are a member.

Network bar

The top bar stays with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name which links to your profile. The icon to the right leads to your Dashboard area where you can edit your settings, profile, account details and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. As we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way to navigate between the blogs you've joined.

-------

There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made, so please take a careful look around and explore this new system. We appreciate your patience and hope you'll help us improve the new platform for this and all the other SB Nation blogs.

And in case you missed it, you'll want to start by claiming your old blog accounts and creating a new SB Nation network account.

Cool

Bad timing with the switch, but I like it.

lol

I was a little annoyed at the switch during a game thread, but amused more than anything. Looks good.

The top of the page

It says this is a baseball blog. It should say Basketball.

Gee thanks SBNation

For taking away my screen name after I’d settled into it.

by Timmay! on Apr 15, 2008 10:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Sorry about that.

Some screen names are reserved for longtime users of some of the older SB Nation blogs.

But “Timmay!” seems like a pretty excellent second choice to me ;)

You should really warn people

I’d be about 1/20 as annoyed if I’d have had a private message last week that this was coming (if there was one, I never saw it, which may be my bad).

BTW how do you change your username once it’s created?

Seriously, I’m so annoyed at the lack of notice about the sudden loss of my account that if it wasn’t for Dave and some of the posters here, I’d just go to one of the other available forums.

by Timmay! on Apr 15, 2008 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dave had been aware that the transition was coming

and I imagine he mentioned it to the community in one or more recent posts, though probably not through private messages. I can certainly understand finding the whole transition annoying if you were caught off guard.

Timmmay, did the sign up screens say your username was reserved for someone other than you? I noticed you haven’t claimed your exisiting BE account, to pull all your diaries and comments over to your new screen name. You can do that from your Settings screen.

Drop us a line at bugreport AT sbnation and we’ll be happy to help you change your screen name. And if you another concern about the account conversion process, let us know what happened and we’ll try and sort it all out. And thanks for your patience – sorry this was sudden.

Thanks, quick answers

Yep, Dave gave a heads up the upgrade was coming. I think the username thing was lost in translation. (It’s possible it came up and I simply missed it… I only skimmed the post about the upgrade, I never expected to lose my username in the upgrade so I wouldn’t have checked for that)

I did indeed stop by the page to check my username, but it’s reserved for someone at South Side Sox (who’s presumably been around longer than I).

Thanks for the heads up on claiming my old posts, I hadn’t read up on that yet. I’ll hit that in a few.

I’ll also mail the bugreport addy to ask for the username change. I may just use your idea, my creativity is lacking tonight. :)

by Timmay! on Apr 15, 2008 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

there have been several posts about the change

(and the possible loss of screen names- I remember Jorga was afraid of losing hers).
But the main posts about it were a while back, so you may not have been a regular poster yet?

by Section323 on Apr 15, 2008 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Only posting for a few months

But I’ve been reading for ever. I think I simply missed the part about the username changes for the reasons mentioned above (and maybe because I wasn’t a member yet so it wouldn’t have affected me).

It wouldn’t have hit me that an upgrade would dump usernames (it’s so unheard of normally) so I didn’t read it that closely… stuck with the Blazer threads instead. :)

Picture embedding

I’ve noticed that some of the avatars that some of us created for use in our signatures aren’t working. Is this feature going to be implemented or is it dropped?

by Philthyanimal on Apr 16, 2008 12:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

we're not currently allowing images in sigs

The image really slowed down load times and Game Threads. We’ve set up avatars so people can have pictures attached to comments, and we may offer a way to hover to see the larger version in the future.

Be nice to these guys

The developers that is. We really beat them up over at Lookout Landing and they put in a lot of hard work and made changes because of it. They deserve much kudos for putting up with all of that and for working really hard at making SBN better for all.

by coolguyrob on Apr 16, 2008 1:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The one part of the Signatures I do like is that the length is increased.

I’ve always wanted to use this quote, but it would never fit before. Now hundreds, nay thousands of people can not read it as they overlook my posts! The joy!

"A certain critic—for such men, I regret to say, do exist—made the nasty remark about my last novel that it contained ‘all the old Wodehouse characters under different names’. He has probably now been eaten by bears, like the children who made mock of the prophet Elisha: but if he still survives he will not be able to make a similar charge against Summer Lightning. With my superior intelligence, I have outgeneralled this man by putting in all the old Wodehouse characters under the same names. Pretty silly it will make him feel, I rather fancy." - P.G. I've been using this new format for a few weeks

at Camden Chat.

Maybe it’s because I’m not a web guy, but I don’t see where it is an improvement. I just don’t find it as comfortable to use.

tim, what did you find more comfortable about the old site?

We’re always changing things, so we appreciate feedback.

by sixfoot6 on Apr 16, 2008 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think part of it is text size.

It seems harder to read.

Another part was searching past comments, but I’ve figured out how to do that.

The Diary – Fanpost section was a bit easier to scroll through, but I have to admit I like that I don’t have to backpage multiple times now to get back to the main page.

I’m sure once I get used to the new format and figure out how things work, it will be fine.

by timg56 on Apr 21, 2008 6:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We're considering building in a text size preference

but for now you can try hitting Ctrl + and Ctrl – if you’re finding things hard to read. This will work for most sites.

Don't like it one bit

Don’t like this new format. Don’t like SBN. Can’t stand all the advertising. And I don’t like to be part of one big monolithic blog either. I’m human, not borg. Mostly I hate all the ads on this new site. They really intrude on my peace of mind.

Nature bats last.

by fisheyes on Apr 16, 2008 8:09 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually,

The number of adds seems about the same. They just have a permanent home, instead of living at the end of each diary fanpost entry. That’s and they’re a little more prominent. But if it wasn’t for the ads, who would pay to have this place run? Do you want Dave to take up PayPal donations? Yes, ads are evil, but without them, this place isn’t free.

Use FireFox with AdBlock Plus installed. I use it on almost every computer I use, so I’m pretty spoiled. I almost never see any ads on the internet anymore.

the new site should have the same number of ads.

On a larger monitor, you may find that the “wide” layout display improves the Story to Ad ratio. Beyond that, sorry to hear that you’re not enjoying the new format – if you have any other feedback please share it; we’ll continue to change things moving forward.

Migrating accounts from old SB Nation blogs

When I signed in, my account here and on GSoM (which I only used during the B-Roy/Davis all-star flap) were found, but it didn’t migrate my account on Building The Dam (the OSU blog).

When it comes to software upgrades, I’m pretty resistant to change. But I gotta say, now that I’ve explored a little bit I’m impresssed with the new features. Auto-refresh during game threads—yippee! I’m looking forward to design tweaks; hope they’re in favor of keeping the visuals relatively clean.

Can you

please fix our record. We are 41-41, not 41-42. I’m very proud of it, and would love for it to be shown correctly. Thanks

We've logged a bug on this

and you can expect to see it fixed tomorrow. Sorry about that!

Searching comments

Is there any way to search the comments? Search only seems to cover main page stories. Am I missing something?

Someone had a comment a few weeks back that I wanted to check.

When I rule the world, Isiah Thomas will be coach and GM of the L*kers, who will be owned by someone who no one respects whose first initial is "J".

There's currently no good way to search comments

and we’re aware that it’s frustrating. Look for a robust comment search as one of the features included with the changes to the Search section in the next few weeks.

When I rule the world

effective comment searching will be mandatory so that people can go back and find the pearls that drop from my lips, er, fingertips.

Sigh.

I sure wish the world would wake up to the benefits of having me as ruler. Until then, I’ll wait for you guys.

Oh, and thanks for all your hard work on this stuff.

Thanks for all your hard work

But you should act quickly. You won’t like Jscot when he’s angry.

Ask not what Blazers Edge can do for you; ask what you can do for Blazers Edge.

Big deal

Most people don’t like me when I’m not angry, either.

It´s a people right to be punished when they owe.

That´s the reason.

Tell me with whom you walk and I will tell you who you are.

Another question

When I am composing a diary, and I minimize it so I can do actual real work in my real life, Blazer’s Edge keeps popping up and trying to take over my real life, too.

I fear this might be my addiction to BE taking hold, but thought it might be something different in the software?

I would prefer when I minimize it that it stay minimized. Is there a way to do this?

What browser are you using?

I’m assuming IE6 or IE7. This bug drives us crazy, and we’re working on it.

IE7

I also earlier had a problem with trying to reply to a comment, but when I clicked reply, it bounced me to the top of the page. I could comment normally in the thread, but not in reply to a particular comment. I left BE and came back, and had the same problem. I closed IE, and came back, and it was resolved.

I believe it drives you crazy. It was popping in front of my work every 30-60 seconds, it seemed like. It always seemed to have just done an autosave when it popped up, I don’t know if that helps or not.

The problem is definitely autosave.

And yeah, it’s the worst. The comment posting problem I haven’t heard about before, but we’ll look out for it. If you get a chance (or if it happens again) drop us a line at the bugreport@sbnation address and let us know exactly what you did before encountering the problem. And thanks for your patience with all these quirks.

No problem

Everybody here (well, except maybe timbo :)) is patient with all of MY quirks.

IE is your problem.

Just download FireFox. It’ll fix that problem, as well as so many others.

Trade Freeland!

I agree...

I love Firefox because I can add all kinds of cool stuff to it. But I have also been giving Safari 3.1.1 for Windows a try lately, and I totally enjoy it. Safari is quite possibly the fastest browser I have ever used.
