Martell's Offseason, Apocalypse and Blazer Dynasty
I still say Martell is going to blow people away next year. That said, he needs to be force fed the ball along with Oden. LMA will get his shots - I'm not worried about getting him going anymore. That means priority #1 is Oden. Priority #2 should be getting Martell early clean looks. He needs to improve his handle and establish that he CAN take it to the hole as he is a much better dunker then anyone but Outlaw and is more aggressive then Outlaw when it comes to taking it to the hole. Now I only want to see that ability used in LMA to Martell baseline screens, which worked beautifully when we used it in the season. Martell could also use drives to keep slower defenders honest when they D him up at the three and he knows he can take them. If he proves to the league he is a legitimate slashing threat and improves his passing he can become a triple threat Brandon-lite, but in order to do that he has GOT to improve his handle.
I also want to say just as we have seen sparks of offensive dominance from Martell (Utah), I have also seen some truly brilliant defense for stretches. He really got up for the Cleveland game and guarded LeBron better then anyone else on the team. I think he is vastly better at defense then Outlaw which I realize isn't saying much. I still feel Outlaw should be our 6th man and Martell should start. He should spend his whole off season shooting 500-1000 3's per day from every conceivable spot around the perimeter. I want him to simply catch and shoot with a shooting coach until he makes Ray Allen look like Pryzbilla. He has the potential to be our #2 option after LMA for scoring but he has got to be aggressive and needs to hit 48%++ of his open threes. Martell has the tools to shoot 50%+ from 3 when open but that requires more and more shooting. He needs to have two assistants work with him over the summer - one to D him up and one to feed him the rock. He needs to be draining any shot that doesn't get a hand on the ball. I also want to see more Reggie Miller frog leg foul drawing. For those who don't know, it's when you flare your legs as wide as possible after a deep shot so the defender that is running at you "fouls" your leg and you draw the foul. Martell got, I think, two 4 point plays this year off that.
I'm convinced Martell has the most remaining potential untapped of active players this year. Outlaw has boatloads of potential but his strides were much further this year (year 5) than Martell (Year 3). Oden isn't active and I don't think Sergio has as much potential as I once thought, which means with his physical gifts and shooting stroke Martell has the greatest remaining "mine" of potential.
If there is one player who played this year who I want to see come back even more deadly it's Martell. I'm also convinced that Martell has the exact tool set we need at the 3. Outlaw is a freak of nature and is a freaking amazing swing man 3/4 who gives us just crazy mismatch ability. Martell is a 2/3 but I think he is an ideal 3 for size and athleticism. His skill set is a thing of beauty and I think after watching this season we have a diamond in the rough waiting to explode. I'm no longer worried about the 3 position with Martell and Outlaw. If we can find a starting PG who can shoot, drive, defend, and nail the 3 it's ring time in 2010, it's truly a race between the apocalypse and a Blazer dynasty. Frankly, if we get a juicy PG ONLY the apocalypse, whether it's Illuminati-caused or enviro-caused, can stop the Blazer juggernaut from rolling :) :) :)

I want so much for you to be right...
If that's the case, then rather than wait for Martell to develop, I'd rather just pull an Ime off the free market for low, low prices just like SA picked him up last year (or off the pre-season rosters, since that's where Ime originally came from).
The question in my mind is: what can Martell bring that Ime couldn't?
Looking over your post, I'd say driving ability. I do like it when he goes to the hole and dunks. But I have a hard time believing he's ever going to be our number two scoring option.
This summer, if we keep him, I'd rather he shot about 100 3's a day and spent the rest of the time perfecting one or two moves driving the basketball. As you say, he must improve his handle.

Ime was a decent fill-in player...
Here is a comparison of Ime's stats from last year as a starter with Portland and Martell's stats from this year starting:
Udoka 06-07:
Min:28.6 PPG:8.4 RPG:3.8 APG:1.5 FG%:46% 3%:40%
Webster 07-08:
Min:28.4 PPG:10.7 RPG:3.9 APG:1.2 FG%:42% 3%:39%
So, looking at these stats and keeping in mind that Martell is 8 years younger than Ime, it is clear to see that there wasn't any offensive drop off by letting Udoka go. Sure, Ime was a better defender and slightly more consistent 3-point shooter, but Martell made huge strides this year with his defense and with any improvement in his confidence, dribbling, defense, shooting, he will be far and away better than Ime's impact by next year. I am really looking at this season as better by Martell, even though it is close to a push.
Does that excite you when you actually look at these numbers? Remember how many people loved Ime? And think how many people aren't sold on Martell. Please people, give the kid some time.

Funny, I just watched Ime today
That's the kind of stuff that being a savvy veteran will get you, that generally only comes with experience. Hopefully Martell will have accumulated a bag of tricks like that in a few years, he definitely has a much higher upside in terms of athleticism and potential.

Martell should be pretty beast next season
He's 21 years old.
He had a 24 freakin point quarter. If he was to be drafted in 2008 as a college Junior, with scouts knowing in advance that he would average 10+ a game, solid rebounding and defense, and with a pretty good 3pt shot he would go in the top ten. He's very athletic and has a great bod (gay quiver there). When he gets going he's almost unstoppable.
If he can learn to be a little more consistent I see him like a Joe Johnson type player.
Next year if he doesn't average 15ppg, I'll jump off the band wagon but right now I'm drinking the koolaid.

No matter what, Marty is worth keeping
Because of his wild card status, and the potential that he COULD suddenly explode, I'd keep him in all trade scenarios except one that is a no brainer. Even if he doesn't really improve or become a borderline star, his athleticism, shooting ability, personality, and work ethic all fit the Portland Trail Blazers.
With his HUGE body, athleticism, and shooting ability, I think he would have torn up the NCAA. He should have gone to college, but I'm glad we got him. I think he definitely would be a lottery pick this year. College players are small, and Martell woulda' ate them up with his natural NBA body... plus his ball handling defeciencies and defensive skills would be hidden easier in the college game.
I don't blame most for being too hard on Webby because we did pass up Paul and Deron for Marty; I just see it as the wrong decision then leading to all the right moves later on. Without that "wrong" pick, we got no Roy/LMA/Oden, so I see it as everything working out as it was supposed to. Now, Webster might even become the exact type of SF who will fit perfectly with our big 3, so the wrong pick has a roundabout way of becoming the exact right pick. It just takes time to see.
A raw 21 year old averaging double digits in PPG and has the ability to explode at times is a good thing. After our big Three, Martell is a luxury that could pay off big time. Unless it's a great deal, I'd be upset if we moved him before we knew what we got.
I think we got a great player in there. Just learning how to dribble the damn ball will mean a lot.

Versatility
He's not a finished product right now. Young players almost never step into the NBA and stop improving. Even Roy has taken a large step forword this year even though he was Mr. Four Years of College. The fact that he was taken so young might be a problematic since we'll have to evaluate his worth before he's shown everything.

He's got one more year unless he blows up
All you have to do is look at his stats, the salary situation, and throw some logic into the mix. Unlike some of us, KP isn't making decisions based on sentiment.
$5 mil+ is too much for 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist in nearly 30 mins per game (on 40% shooting no less)
On the other hand, I hope the Martell fanbois are right because I'd rather pay someone from within the organization to start at SF than go around the league looking for someone.

Putting words in the mouths of BE bloggers...
At 21, Martell outproduced Ime's 2007 season with the Blazers and there was an uproar to keep him here. One year later, Martell filled the void very well in his first year starting (and 8 years younger than Ime) and there is still plenty of nay-sayers. Martell Webster is part of the future in Portland because:
1.) he has what you can't teach; raw NBA athleticism, prototype size and good work ethic to improve
2.) speaking of improving, Martell took strides in all facets of his game this year to be a solid starter, yes he needs to be stronger on perimeter defense and if he improves his dribbling
3.) Martell proved that he can work to improve and his raw abilities continue to have great upside giving him a higher ceiling than most options we would have to replace him and
4.) Martell's salary is only $3M right now, and even if he gets a raise to around $5M per season, he would still be a nice player to have on our roster for that money. A good value and we would know what we have.
I don't care about sentimental, i just want to avoid swapping a bunch of players and getting other peoples junk when the guys we currently have (Martell, Outlaw, and JJack) are better than serviceable, especially considering their youth/experience and work ethic.
