SI Vault articles about the Blazers

Okay, I know it's not great to just put links to personal blogs, but I can't do the work twice. I went through and linked to nearly all of the articles about the Blazers or Blazers players that have run in SI over the last 38 years. They're on my blog by headline and date. Enjoy. I'm really looking forward to reading the Curry Kirkpatrick articles that were referenced in Red Hot and Rollin' and the articles about Sabonis, my all-time favorite Blazer.

Nice work!
You made it easy to find an article I've wanted to read again for ever. My favorite part is the article after that one too:

Is Anybody Happy Here? 01/16/1989

One year later:

Rip City returns... with a BANG! 01/15/1990

Great stuff. You never know when a team will turn around overnight. :)

Thanks. This will give me something to do
while I'm at work since there is no work to do.

Chemistry matters
Read the one on the championship, "All for one beats one for all" from 6/13/1977.

Philadelphia had more raw talent.  We had a team, they had a, well, I'm not sure what they had.

I'm frequently right, but always certain

Love this comment
"Lucas' reputation as a dukes-up intimidator--considerably enhanced in the mini-series with the Chicago Bulls when he punched out a trainer and nearly strangled a referee by pulling his whistle chain--as well as the fact that he plays second banana to Bill Walton, have kept him from being acclaimed as a superstar. As he says, somewhat paradoxically, "I'm no crazy boxing madman, but I just want them to know Luke is out busting chops. If I had this kind of year in New York, I'd be governor.""

A simpler time.

Sabonis
I read the ones about Sabonis from 1988
(Courting a Big red from June, 13, 1988 and So Near, So Far from Oct. 17, 1988). It seems like they were trying to get him over then. I wonder what the heck happened. It sounded like he wanted to come over here at the time. Why did he eventually go to Spain in the early 90's?

A few reasons, I think.
I haven't read those yet, since I still had a lesson to prepare and school to teach when I did those last night, but I think there were three big reasons.

  1. The soviet union. It kept him out at first, although the fall in 1989 made it much more possible. After that he didn't come over because...

  2. He was making a ton of money in Europe.

  3. He was basically considered the best player not in the US. The superstar of world basketball.

Thank you so much
I wanted to read some of those Jailblazer era articles so badly.
