OT: Tell Me about You (not too much and a poll)

It is embarrassing to admit how much time I spend at Blazers Edge.  I made a joke in someone's diary that I needed to go to Blazers Edge Anonymous or B.E.A.   I spend way too much time here.  After I get home from work, I honestly try to keep myself from coming here.   I sit in front of a computer at work, I do not have a busy job, so I am on Blazers Edge all day.  If I was a friend of mine, I would pick on me, for spending so much time here.

Today I was sitting on my lanai, looking out over the ocean, in 78 degree weather, and listening to the soothing sounds of the freeway below, and I thought to myself, "Self, why do you spend so much time at Blazers Edge?"  Well, I flabbergasted myself, and I was speechless.  It is not often, that I cannot find something to say.  I am pretty much an expert on everything, and I am a Trail Blazers fan.  I always have something to say.

I centered my chi and reflected upon the heart of the matter, and realized that excluding the Blazers and Dave's eloquent and commonsensical writing, I come here for the people.  I come here to hang out with cultured older women, Europeans, teens, mainlanders, wrestlers, writers, fanatics, stat-geeks, unseemly fans of other teams, loggers, and above all else, Blazer fans.  This blog is a melting pot, that warms my soul and touches my heart.

Upon realizing that besides the Blazers and Dave, I spend a lot of time here socializing, I thought this would be a fine opportunity for anyone that is willing to introduce themselves.  I do not want to ask too much information, just things that we might have in common or find interesting.

Here is what I will share:

I live in Hawaii
I have a dog named Carlos, a cat named Kenny, and an 18 gallon fish-tank
I was in the navy for six years, over four of them on the U.S.S. California
I went to grade-school in Vancouver, Washington
I went to junior-high in Oakridge, Oregon
I went to high-school in Grand Bay, Alabama
I am 35
My wife is from Carlton, Oregon, we met in Eugene, and she is a sugar momma
Alma mater: Northwest Christian College
I have never been able to dunk
I can eat 50 eggs

I chose The Banter
Because I come here to learn about what's going on with the Blazers more than anything else and that was the closest I could find.

As for a little about myself, I'm 28, in the Air Force, and stationed in Las Vegas.

I grew up in Lake Oswego and Tualatin, graduated from Tualatin High School and promise you that my family wasn't nearly as rich as that makes it sound (not that we were poor though ;-) ).

I'm 6' 5" and have no basketball skills whatsoever.  Even if I did, my best case scenario would be a Kyle Korver type with bad knees... maybe Larry Steele.

by Gargen on Mar 6, 2008 10:16 PM PST   0 recs

Alright.
I chose "To Learn the Word of the People" because, believe it or not, there isn't alot of Blazers coverage up here in Seattle.

I'm a 7th-generation Iowan.
I was initially drawn to the Pacific Northwest by a Rice Krispies commercial.
I lived in Portland on two separate occasions, and for about a year on each occasion.
My dog is a runt white boxer named Daisy.
I'm 27 and have already been married and divorced.
I went to grade school in Des Moines, Iowa.
I went to high school in Jefferson City, Missouri.
I went to college at Western Washington University.
My job has me working on websites and managing client accounts.

Okay
I'm a native Oregonian
I'm a geek managing other geeks to do geek stuff
I can see the Rose Garden out my living room window
I'm 5'7" and played pick up ball for a while.  I was not good.
Two surgeries from basketball: Shoulder and ACL
Did not attend college
Got my girlfriend to like basketball.  Trout is her favorite.

Go Beacons!

They keep sending me letters asking me to send them money.  I always write back, "Leave me alone until my student loans are paid off."  They do not care, they just keep asking for money.

jealous of your weather
I live in Eugene, soon Corvallis

I have no pets myself, but my girlyfriend has two bunnies that eat everything w/ in 2 feet of the floor

I was born in San Diego, but have lived in Oregon since I was 5

I'm attending OSU, will have my degree after next year

I am 23

I was able to dunk my freshman year of college (not bad for a 6'1" white guy), ah those were the days

The Blazers are the only team not from San Diego that I favor, and was pretty psyched to see that Dave was also a Chargers fan!

I can buy over a $150 of gorceries (mostly bulk food) from winco and keep a mental count that is within $.05 of the real total price...not exactly a trick that makes you the life of the party

I've been in the Army for almost 16 years.
I live in Islamabad, Pakistan.
I'm moving to Zagreb, Croatia in June.

I speak Russian, Serbo-Croatian, German and a bit of French.
If I told you that I suck at basketball, it would leave with the impression that I have more talent than I actually do.
I also love baseball.
I once got Jerome Kersey's autgraph on the back of a Bigfoot poster while at a monster truck rally at the Coliseum.

I like to think of myself as one of those
"cultured older women" Mr. inHawaii spoke of, meaning you don't need to know my age. Blazer fan since the beginning but I've seen more games this year than in all the rest of the years of my fandomhood put together. Been listening for many years when within range of radio signals. Current job is doing things with wafers, not Von Wafer, to support myself.

I couldn't answer the poll
I come here for four reasons:
  1. The People
  2. The Banter
  3. (not on your list) To Learn more about basketball(yes, I learn stuff here)
  4. Most important of all, and as should be evident by my signature, and something that is on your list -- I am Right.

Important information about me:
  1. I hate off-topic threads, and never comment in them.
  2. I laugh at my own stupid jokes.  I would laugh at my own good jokes, too, but I can never tell the difference between the good ones and the stupid ones, and my kids say all my jokes are stupid.

Less important information:
  1. I grew up in Portland, and followed the Blazers since 1970.
  2. I live in Scotland.
  3. I like playing basketball, but was never great and, um, I'm getting old.
  4. I used to play with black guys who called me an honorary black because I had curly black hair and could shoot from deep "too good for any white boy".
  5. I was always the poster boy for "white guys can't jump".
  6. I am now afraid to play against my kids this summer (when the weather dries out enough to roll out the hoop) for fear that I won't win anymore.
I'm frequently right, but always certain

I come to learn English
but I voted with my heart: People.

I gonna kill my signature but here I go (alea jacta est). I will use the foreigner exception, so I´ll explain a litle more than usual.

I´m born and live in Santander, 200.000 hab., a Northern town of Spain with a beautiful bay and many beaches.
I have to cats, called Berta and Gilda. I had a turtle called Petra, but it grew too much and now is in a zoo.
I was in the Army for a year. 25 years ago Spanish Army still used an old system to have officers in reserve, giving some preparation to people selected between university students, who were interested because they could do that during summers, instead of losing a whole year doing the normal military service. I became provisional second lieutenant. But I would be a disaster (la casa de te...) in a war. In Spanish Civil war there was a saying: "Alférez provisional, cadáver efectivo" (provisional second lieutenant, definitely dead).
I was born in 1962.
I played baseball from 14 to 17 and I figure I play basketball since 39.
I did all my studies before university with the catholic "Hermanos de la Salle".
My wife is a beautiful girl with wonderful green eyes and black hair. She works for civil service. And we have two children (11-13), good boys and students. I´m a very lucky man.
I have two children
I have never been able to get drunk, because my liver reacts before and I must stop drinking.
I knew Tom is Cool Hand Luke

And I´m well known between my friends as "the man with a theory". I have my own theories about you can´t imagine how many subjects.

"You, my friend, are an enigma" (einman77)

Fun Poll!
I picked the banter but I wanted to select the people too. There are too many posters here who entertain me, enlighten me, or both; and if I tried to name them I'd fall woefully short, so suffice it to say that BE is a nice refuge of calm Blazers talk amid the usual frenetic Internet nonsense. And though only one of you will become my colleague, all of you are now my friends.

I was born and raised in Portland and graduated from Jesuit High School. My first love was basketball, but we had five D-I players on our team my senior year; as I am not any good at basketball, this understandably limited my chances at making the team. I ran the 400m and 800m in track instead.

I live nine months of the year in Boston studying at Tufts.

I'm currently in Malaga, Spain, helping Amlmart raise a Spanish Army to take over BE and learning Spanish in my free time.

The black guys I played basketball with at Tufts called me Tony Parker because we have quickness and landing smoking-hot Latinas in common. Actually only one of those things is true.

I have a borderline compulsion about proper grammar. I frequently have to check myself from correcting someone's subject-verb agreement as this is a Blazers website and not a grammar workshop, and I usually don't read posts with lots of grammar and spelling errors as I believe it reflects sloppy and disorganized thinking.

I wish I had interesting abilities, but I don't.

by BlazersOrBust on Mar 7, 2008 3:24 AM PST   0 recs

He should recruit mercenaries faster.
We must full our Spanish "Tercio" before jscot attack with his highlanders. He´s recruiting an Army of traitors too. Fast, hard and now, when  Dave´s power is tottering after SergioFTW´s actions (I´m going to pay his services).

4 the ppl
I too spend way way WAY to much time on this site.  Its pretty much every morning before i go to work, and then when i get home. Then before i eat dinner... then after i've eaten... Then all the time in between then and falling asleep...

My wife makes fun of me for it. But i'm still here.

I'm 6'4" 24, and love to play basketball.  For some reason being the same age as most of our players makes me like them more. I was born in and have lived in Southwest Washington my entire life and have always been a Blazers fan.  Really didn't realize how much of a fan i was untill I saw Nate driving up I-5 and I had to slow down and speed up to go by him like 5 times just to make sure.  It was totally him, and he clearly did not like me staring at him like some obsessed blazer fan.  His BMW is much faster than my Jeep.

I come for the people and banter
Two of my initials are JT. I like Oregon Duck football and basketball, and 22 was my number last year. I was once the honarary captain at a Blazer's game and I go to shake Shaqs hand. I cant dunk yet but am getting there. I can play several songs by flicking my cheeks with my pointer fingers.

I come for the information
I come to BE to try and get as much input on the Blazers as possible but get tired of all the same negative trade this guy for whatever reason talk

I am 61 (well nearly...2 weeks) Born in Portland and raised on Oregon coast in young years and Portland area rest of time.

I was in the Army during Vietnam...came back to what I thought was home and had the country and most of the people in it crap all over me because I was in the Army and have never been a fan of America since. I have followed the Blazers since their inception...last game I was at was in 1976/77 when a seat on the end under the basket (4/5 rows back from the floor was $4 and watched the Blazers whip Detroit by as much as 40 points at one time.

I live now in NE England and never get to see or listen to any Blazer games (8 hour difference) but I try and read as much about them as possible, especially as they seem to be made up now of some fine young men that have some skills as well.

by englandpaul on Mar 7, 2008 8:40 AM PST   0 recs

I'm feeling old
I live in both Portland and Seattle
My dog (a yelllow lab) passed away about 4 years ago.  I figure I'll eventually get another.
I was in the navy for four years, most of them on the U.S.S. Dace (SSN607).
I grew up in Maryland
I went to high-school in Washington DC (to a Catholic boys ROTC school that's now co-ed with ROTC optional).
I graduated from University of Maryland (BA Hist).
I have a couple of graduate degrees (Environmental Science & Engineering and Mangement of Science & Technology) from OGI
My wife is a massage therapist and is originally from from Korea.  (What I think is funny as hell is the fact she doesn't particularly like Koreans.)
I have never been able to dunk - on the 8 foot baskets.  (Although I've had some unbelievably vivid and realistic dreams where I've done so.  It's a great feeling.)
I read a couple of books a month and generally have three or more going at any one time.
Next month will be the 20th anniversity of my coming to the PNW.  (My dad was out here during the war and then in the 70's when he helped with the construction of Trojan.  He always told my brothers and I that if any of us ever made it to the Northwest, we'd never want to leave.  Guess I'm stuck here as I can't make a liar of my dad.)

I come for the hoops insight and the humor
I come for the hoops insight and the humor.

About me:

I was born and raised in Eugene.
I now live in San Diego. When I went home for Christmas, I was shocked to see that posters of Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, and Michael Jordan(?!) still hang on the walls of my bedroom at my dad's house (separated parents, two bedrooms).
I played football in college.
I coached high school basketball for three years, which is one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done.
I am now working on a PhD in political science, a degree that has very little do with politics and a lot to do with statistics. For example, I don't really understand the U.S. primary system and have no idea how to run congressional campaign, but I know quite a bit about instrumental variables, Markov chains, autocorrelation and conditional probability, among other things.

by PoliSam on Mar 7, 2008 8:55 AM PST   0 recs

I too live in San Diego and love instrumental variables! Did you drive up to Staples for the game last week? I had my Roy jersey on and saw a few others too...

e-harmony?
-I'm 35
-I have lived in Portland since 2000
-I was raised in Missouri & Kansas (Jayhawk alum; Go Raef!)
-I am an architect
-Recently married
-Past decent athlete (swimmer for 12 years, then middle linebacker/center in H.S.) - drinking, diet, and smoking all led to my athletic decline (currently attempting to fix 2 of those)
-B-ball?  Past decent pick-up game guy.  Not a great shooter, but could clear the glass with my incessant shoving.  Last pick up game I severely rolled my ankle.  My wife told me I was too old to play basketball with 20 year olds...I have not played since.

When we meet people and they ask how I met my wife, I always say E-Harmony.  We actually met at a party but the E-Harmony thing is funny, because people will always follow up with a story about their online dating experiences.

Born w/ Blazer BLOOD!!
I'm a 27 yr old newlywed
Got married last summer
I just joined BE a couple weeks ago but I have been a Blazer fan since the glory days of Clyde the Glide. My dad used to take me to the games.
I still have my DQ Blazer cups (favorite was K Duckworth fishing)
My wife doesn't understand why I yell and scream and jump out of the couch when watching the Blazers on TV.
She doesn't understand why I got so giddy after I saw Lamarcus Aldridge get into his sweet Mercedes at Chili's where we were dining (it was a day after they beat LA and he had that sweet one-handed catch the rebound and dunk).
So I come here to feel validated by my ultra-fanhood and allegiance to the greatest team in the history of Oregoniankind..."The Portland Trail Blazers"

Also worth mention: I work at Intel, graduated from OSU in Accounting, I've lived in Ukraine, El Salvador and China and my favorite sport is Ultimate Frisbee.

I'm 27

We have a labrador and chihuahua
I work for AT&T
Born and raised to root for the Blazers
Play in a band called Mark Twain Indians (hence the name)
Skateboarder all of junior and high school, no organized sports
Love to play basketball, but given I'm 5-6 with no decent shot, I'm better off on Xbox 360!

Typical Blazer fan... grew up here
I came to get Blazer news/insight & found a bunch of funny people.

Tweener is my handle because I can play all 5 positions in rec. basketball, but I'm not really good at any of them.  6'2" & I can sort of dunk.

I have a lovely wife and 3 kids the oldest is 4.
I'm 28.
Real Estate Broker/Investor in Salem.
I have a picture from 5th grade of me on Terry Porter's knee at a basketball camp.

I come here for Blazer info.
  • 6'0", 157 lbs.  Only thing I've ever been able to dunk are donuts and haven't done that for many years 'cuz they are oh so unhealthy.

  • old .. retired at 55,  8 years ago

  • 36 year career in IBM mainframe computers beginning in 1963 (vacuume tube computers and punch cards then).

  • spend too much time on BE after arising in morning before running.  Working on minimizing that time.

  • big Blazer fan since their inception, rooting as hard for them during the Jail Blazer years as I do right now (not a bandwagon fan).

  • live in Wash. near Astoria, Or.

  • no pets, somewhat allergic to cats and a dog would scare the elk away

  • 5 kids all living in the Willamette Valley.

  • had a great life living up here in in the woods until my wife died last June.  Now these 59 acres are meaningless, empty and too much work so I'll be selling.

  • Blazers keep me going

I wish you the best TwoDeep
I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through and I wish you the best.  Blazers Edge wouldn't be the same without you; I'm glad you like to hang out here and I selfishly hope you KEEP spending too much time here!

Do you ever make it to any Blazer games in person?

My fiance isn't from the Northwest, and when I first took her up there I showed her the Astoria area (coming from the Washington side) and we both thought it was beautiful.  She's from Florida, so obviously her coast scenery is a little different.  I prefer OUR rocky wooded coasts... plus, The Goonies wasn't filmed in Florida for a reason: The Northwest is better.

Take care, Two Deep.  For what it's worth my thoughts are with you.  You're a favorite of mine around here.  Ya still doing your Oden miles?

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Mar 8, 2008 12:49 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Hey, thanks
Mortimer for your very nice words. To answer your questions, yep, I'm still doing the Oden miles. I've always worked at staying healthy and in shape (so did my wife but look what it got her .. moral of the story here: get your colonoscopies.  Having one at the recommended 50 years of age would likely have saved her life.  HUGE regret!!). I hadn't been to a game for a few years but thanks to my son - who occassionally posts here - I've been to 3 so far this year.

Yep, this is a beautiful area with lots of outdoor stuff to do.  After selling this place I'll probably remain in the area ... certainly never going back to live again in traffic and stop lights.  That's the great part about retirement.  You can live wherever you choose (within reason).

P.S. I thoroughly enjoy your entertaining posts and have found your humor does not hide the fact that you just happen to know a bunch about about the NBA.

dang, I forgot to agree with living in Hawaii!
I got married in Maui, though. There was a rainbow that day... I'm told that is Hawaiian symbolism for good luck.
Have a little girl who's turning one soon named after the beach we got married on.
We've got a dog and two cats.
Born and raised in Portland.
28, can't dunk, love the Blazers.

All about the people
I'm 23 years old
Born and raised in Portland
Went to college in New Orleans (2 years pre-Katrina, 2 years post-Katrina)
Went to the Blazers game in New Orleans when Damon Stoudamire scored 54 points
The first Blazers game I went to, I was too young to know better so I rooted for Larry Bird the whole game
Since playing in the NBA is no longer a reality, flying the blimp inside the Rose Garden is my new dream

It's all about me
I'm 41 years old today.
I am a Vancouver Washington native and still live nearby.
I graduated from Gresham HS.
I played 3 sports: Soccer, Football and Basketball until I blew out both knees.
I didn't play much basketball except at the end of games to make free-throws. I once made 119 in a row.
I watched the '77 championship on TV when I was 10.
I spent 4 years in the Air Force as a jet mechanic.
I once flew in the backseat of a F-16B fighter.
My alma matter is Warner Pacific.
I work for a microchip company in Quality Assurance. If you have an iPod, cell phone, or GPS you probably have one of our chips.
No family except for Blazers Edge.

One other reason to come to BE
I also like BE because it reminds me that people can convince themselves to be happy or sad about anything. All we have to do is say to ourselves, "I want X to happen." If it happens, we are happy or content. If it doesn't, we can be upset. It's amazing. Of course, we don't usually notice when we decide to think "X should happen,"  (Aldridge should drive to the basket more; Sergio should play more, etc), but it still has a powerful effect on our emotions. If I can be happy because the Blazers win a basketball game, I can be happy about almost anything.

I learn alot about basketball
I'm 31 and female
Travis is my favorite player
I am a physical therapist
Born in S. Carolina, raised in Tillamook
LOVE Cheese and corn dogs
Have one dog, Porter (after Blacke Butte the beer)
and one cat, Lucy Rally.
I would love to play basketball for exercise, but it's hard to find other people in Beaverton who suck like me and are ok playing with a girl. 24 fitness is not the place for me.

The banter is fun!
I am 31,
born and raised in Gresham
Met my wife at MHCC,
Graduated from Concordia in 2006
Attending Seminary in Ft. Wayne, In.
2 kids, daughter who is 2 years, and a son who is 2 months.

Been a Blazer fan since my Grandpa tuned me into them, although in the later years, with Rider and Wallace. the team really turned him off. Unfortunately, he died a few years before we turned it around with our current team. He would have been proud to root for these Blazers again.

I'm not a Lizard or a Newt
I live in a hollowed out tree in the coastal rain forest (or so I wish). I am a recluse. My only human contact is through the Internet, because of its non-personal nature.

I am 60 years of age. I ride a bicycle. I fear Big Foot (only `cause I've smelled `im).

I have forgotten the other questions, if there were more.

Oh yah, My favorite song (and writer(s), Composer(s), Singer(s)) is "A Day in The Life", by The Beat Boys. Was that a question?

I almost lost my way back to here. I haven't read a thing in this Diary. I'll get back to ya, if I remember or it seems relevant in some way. TaTa for now or as Alfredo would say Sayonara.

36 yo
female
NE Portland

I'm 5'10" so you might think I'd be good at basketball, but you would be wrong.  I played softball in high school and college, though. I threw a mean curve.

I was born in Kentucky and met the Louisville Cardinal at a basketball game when I was 7. Still have a Cardinal magnet on my fridge, although I couldn't name a current Louisville player.

Went to my first Blazer game November 2006 when the school I worked for had a fundraiser.  I dragged my dad along with me- he didn't want to go. It was a win against the Lakers and we were sucked into the Blazers' vortex.  Now we have season tickets.  How did that happen?

by Section323 on Mar 8, 2008 12:15 AM PST   0 recs

Section323 is a female?!!
Huge surprise for some reason.
