Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

top players to build a team around. Brandon Roy?

So I play a lot of NBA 2K8, and to spice up the game a lot of times I do the fantasy draft option. Basically for those people that don't play NBA videogames all the players are put into a league wide draft. It results in more even teams, or is supposed to. I was thinking today about two, well now I have a third, questions while mindlessly wasting my time playing today and that is:

  1. Who are your top players to build a NBA team around. Not necessarily the best players, but the best players to build a team around. Make a list of your 5,10, 15 make a list of however many players you like
  2. Is Brandon in the top 30?
  3. does Greg or LMA have to potential or likelyhood to get on the list
My answers:
  1. Lebron, Chris Paul, Kobe, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard,
  2. Yes
  3. Not really sure.
What do you think? I'm just trying to move away from the trade players threads

Don't doubt yourself
These are questions of a most intriguing variety.

My answers are as follows:

1.  LeBron, Kevin Garnett, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Kobe.

(Who NOT to build a team around: Smush Parker.)

  1.  Brandon is DEFINITELY in the top 30. Probably the top 16,

  2.  You gotta figure, folks, that Gregory and LeMarcus will end up on the list. For cryin' out loud. Have a little faith.
Nature bats last.

So you believe the hype
from K*be that he is now a team player? Build is definitely not something he has ever done and I, for one, remain unconvinced that I ever want that hot dog on any team of mine. I am sad he is playing for USA Basketball.

My answers...
Kevin Garnett is too old to build a team around. You can't pick a guy who's in a "win now" mode. You figure, if KG does it get it done with this edition (and by that, I mean the 2007-2009/10 edition) you gotta figure his time has come and gone.

The rest of those guys are good picks, but Kobe's getting older too, but doesn't really have a lot of 'mileage' on him.

GO -should- work himself onto the list... after all, he is the most hyped #1 since LeBron and the first pick in what we think is one of the deepest drafts since like the Malone/Barkley/Ewing draft.

I do the same thing with sports games
Fantasy draft
Lebron, Dr. Dwight, LmA, Brandon, Paul
Greg and Durantula are the sixth men.
I also always create Sabonis.

i love 2k8
  1. LeBron, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Brandon Roy, Dwayne Wade

  2. Well if he's in the top 5 I think that automatically gets him into the top 30 unless you're using Qyntel Wood's math

  3. Yes

2k8 or Live?
How many of you guys have played both games? (2k8 and NBA LIVE08) I have LIVE08, but I'm always hearing that 2k8 is much better, but i've never played it, so I just don't know.  So should I make the switch?

The way I hear it...
Jscot's empire will just clone Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain in secret, and give them nothing but basketball for the 20 years it takes for those clone-babies to grow into NBA Players.

But that is only a rumor, which you did not hear from me. Nor from anyone pretending to be me.

Roy is up there
I'd take him over Bosh and maybe even Howard.  Those guys both play in the East and I'm not convinced either of them have all the tools needed to take their teams to Title-Land, whereas I'm convinced Roy does.  People scoff now because Bosh and Howard are big men who dunk and block shots and wow that's exciting.  But mark my words, come see me in ten years and we'll tally up the titles for each.

Kobe Bryant is 30 years old, which means he's got maybe 5 years left at his top level, and that's being generous.  Not sure I want to build around him at this point.  If we're talking a two-year window, sure.

As amazing as Lebron is, I still need to see more.  I know, I know.  The East ruins everything for me.  I'm as biased as they come in that respect.  Let's see what Lebron does this season in the playoffs, then maybe I'll hop on the bandwagon.  Still, you have to put him as #1 purely on physical talent alone.

Can't say enough about Chris Paul, taking a middle of the pack team and having the best record in the West this season.  Wow.  Again you have to see what the playoffs bring to see how huge Chris Paul is really going to be, but so far so good.

So I'll go Lebron, CP, and then I'll take Roy.  Roy's an All-Star in his second season.  He's not flashy but it's time to admit he's really freaking good.  In the West.

Oh about LMA/GO
I think GO does.  Experts across the universe agree Greg Oden is the most talented big man to come along since Tim Duncan.  The stuff is there.  The environment is there.  The coaching staff is there.

LMA is a toughie.  He's smarter than I first thought.  He's more skilled than I first thought.  Can he handle himself down low - both on offense and on defense?  I think that is the major question for LMA.

Theoretically we could be fielding three of the top 15 or 20 players in the league in a few years.  I really believe that.

Careful. You let some of that positive thinking
leak out and you'll risk losing your curmudgion (sp?) status.

To play Devil's advocate
to your well-written argument, what do you think about that whole "big men win championships" thing, looking at your top three players to build a team around? Look at all the recent champions -- the Spurs have Duncan and had the Admiral, the Lakers had Shaq, the Heat had Shaq, the Rockets had Hakeem for their two-peat...excepting Jordan's Bulls (who I exclude because Roy is no Jordan and neither is anybody else) and the Pistons in 2004 (the exception to the rule) every team in the last decade and a half has won a championship with a dominant big man. Without a doubt I'd take Howard over Roy for that reason.

by BlazersOrBust on Mar 31, 2008 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Detroit...
Although to make your point stronger, Detroit did in fact have two all-star big men on the front line.  They may not have dominated in the posted on offense, but if one doubts the effect that the Wallace's had on the game, they are crazy.  I am never quite sure why people leave Detroit out of the "championship team with dominant big men" category.

Howard & Oden
without one of those two championships are not coming often.

If I Played
I'd try out my TiH stats and would use high numbered jerseys for this season and low numbered jerseys for next season.  I'm with the author on question's 2 and 3.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
