Greg! WTF!

Apparently, GO played some pick up games at 24 Hour Fitness ---- I don't know what's worse.  Oden risking everything at a public gym with some has-been gym rats, or people that call themselves Oregonians that ALLOWED it to happen!

Good news
"The good news, Greg looks great. He had at least 8-10 dunks. A couple of them were coast to coast, one was a putback, and the rest were all low post two handers" Coast to coast, point guard problem solved.

haha
He'll be the first ever 7'1 point guard to lead the league in assists and because he's been rehabbing so much, he'll be quick enough to guard the Tony Parkers and Chris Pauls of the world.

Also good that
he just really wants to play that bad !  Some love of the game, as opposed to just doing this 'cause I'm big and they'll pay me, is what we're here for.  Also probably means the knee is feelin' really good.  But yeah, good to get the "need to play" handled with the coaches on board.

Oden challenges 8-10 dunk claims...
Quote from SI.com article on Oden's pickup game:
"Oden said he didn't dunk eight or 10 times, as was reported on an Internet forum. But he did get in a few -- and he didn't need to jump."

Man, we gotta watch what we say, we don't want to be geting our guy in trouble !

Plus it was 9' baskets, so not too tough for the big guy.

Well
I would hope Greg could have dunked when he d*$@ well pleased while playing at a local gym.

What the Heck
Why wasn't he at Gold's Gym?

More specifically...
Why wasn't he at the Gold's Gym on Aurora and 95th in Seattle between 4:30 and 5:30? The nerve.

I challange the All-Father

You tell Gred Oden that T-Rex is looking for him.

One on One: Make it, take it. Seven game series. Each game to ten. NO overtime.

I promise not to hurt him.

If dinosaurs voted, Ralph Nader would win the election... Unanimously.

by T REX on Mar 27, 2008 9:11 PM PDT reply actions

I read this earlier
I think its awesome he's playing and have no worries. I'm sure he can coast and still avoid pretty much any contact.

by iDea on Mar 27, 2008 9:42 PM PDT reply actions

Greg Greg Greg Greg Greg...
Don't do that, dude.  Play at the Blazers gym.

Good to know he is actually healthy enough to move and play, even if against non-NBAers.  Just the fact he can move, dunk, shoot, is still athletic, is HUGE.

But Greggy Baby!  If you think the rumor of hurting yourself playing Dance Dance Revolution or just getting off the couch was embarassing, imagine how bad it'll look to get hurt while still rehabbing because you played against some dudes at a local gym.  Remember what Amare, Kidd, everyone who had micro tells ya!  You gotta take it slow and easy.  Plus, the team needs to trust that you won't take any silly risks on your knee because of impatience.

We still love you and aren't mad at you.  You're still "dope" and "chill".  We just don't want our hearts broken!

At the very least invite me to play with you.

Love,
Mortimer

Hey Greg
If you wanna go snowboarding, hit me up!

by iDea on Mar 28, 2008 6:49 AM PDT reply actions

Ouch
I've had my fair share of injuries as well.......BUT, how funny would it be to see a seven footer ridin' down Hood.

by iDea on Mar 28, 2008 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Not quite a 7 footer
but wasn't it Vladimir Radmanovic (6'10") who hurt himself snowboarding last year and initially lied about it to the team? He only played in 55 games but I don't remember the exact injury.

by lee3022 on Mar 29, 2008 12:58 AM PDT up reply actions

This just proves
That Tominhawaii was right. KP has fooled us all, There was no injury it was all a ruse and Greg just let the cat out of the bag! I mean come on, if he was really injured he would have never done this, NEVER.

I salute Tom as the giver of knowledge.

This incident
makes me question his intelligence.  Did he really do this?  With the intentions the Blazers have of holding him out of Summer League games - which are around 4 months away - he must know they don't think he is basketball ready.

by TwoDeep on Mar 28, 2008 9:05 AM PDT reply actions

Chalk it up to being a kid
I think it's clear from every bit we've seen and read about Greg that he is a smart kid, but even smart kids do something dumb.

Being injured for so long really sucks, and I've gone through that as well during my long ago athletical days.  You just want to get back out and do SOMETHING.  As a kid, it's hard to see the risk/consequences of such an act, and why it is NEVER wise for a guy like Oden to play pick up ball against regular people, even when he isn't injured.  He just shouldn't.

I really don't think we should question his intelligence, just his judgement.  I don't worry about Greg getting in trouble, ala Z-Bo.  But I wouldn't blame the Blazers for being even more cautious and strict about Greg's PHYSICAL activities when he is out of their sight.  Hopefully the anger the Blazers direct towards Greg, the disappointment they feel (which may hurt even more than anger for a thoughtful kid like Oden), will make Greg think twice next time.

Nothing bad happened, so hopefully this is a lesson learned with no penalties.

Yeah
To be honest, he's probably less likely to get hurt playing a pick up game than he would if he played against pros.  I don't think any guy at a gym would hard foul him or even play anything more than counterfeit defense on him.

You're right of course Morty,
it was Greg's judgment that failed him here.  It's just that there are a few other instances leading me to believe that he may not be the sharpest cheese on the cracker.

Indifferent
I think as fans we have every right to be concerned.  Greg probably used some bad judgement.
It is also possible that Greg's knee is probably just fine anyways.  As it is, there was speculation that he might have been able to play towards the end of this season if we were in the playoff hunt because he was so far ahead of schedule with his rehab, but the Blazers wanted to take the cautious and slow approach (which is the right thing to do) with him.  Greg is probably fine, and though I don't approve of his pickup game, the good news is that he can move and groove once again.

Imagine with John Lennon
Imagine there's no Oden
It's easy if you try
No healthy for us
Above us only a lame guy
Imagine all the people
crying all the day.
Imagine there's no Rudy
It isn't hard to do
No one to pick or trade for
And no cap space too
Imagine all the Blazers
saying "kill me please".
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I think someday you'll join us
And the whole hell will be as one
Imagine there's no Brandon
I wonder if you can
No need for spot or playing time
A brotherhood of men
Imagine too Lamarcus
Sitting on the bench.
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the whole hell will live as one
A gatherins of sheperds, and one dead sheep.

That brought a tear to my eye!
Rudy strengthening a perimeter already very powerful, the goal of the Blazers is to pursue everything.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
