A Tribute to the Greatest Diary in the World

I just wrote the greatest diary in the world and forgot to save it and lost everything.  Rather than retype everything, I thought I would just tell you all that it was the greatest diary in the world.  So this diary really isn't the greatest diary in the word, it is merely a tribute to the greatest diary in the world.

Actually, I still have some real diary left in me.  I know this is somewhat premature since there is some season left, but I had a great thought the other day and wanted to share it with my dear friends.

As most of you know, I have only been a Blazers fan since they drafted Greg Oden.  My though was that besides landing the number one pick and then drafting Oden, there have not been many fond Blazers memories since Shaq's game seven dunk in the 2000 Western Conference Finals.  That goofy cross-eyed open mouth expression, as he ran back down the court, kicked off years of mediocrity and disappointment for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Looking back over the past seven or so years, I believe the most memorable Blazers moment was when Coach Maurice Cheeks helped that young girl sing the national anthem.  It is a sweet moment, but I prefer memorable Blazers moments to involve the actual game of basketball.  Drafting Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge turned out to be a coup, but I do not recall anyone being blown away when it happened.  The year that followed is pretty much forgettable.  Roy emerged as a leader, but again, it was not that memorable until this year.

And now, the rest of the story...

This year had "the streak," clutch game winning shots by Roy and Travis Outlaw, funny anecdotes, killer crossovers, spectacular dunks, and a convincing win over the surging Lakers.  As I said before, this diary is somewhat premature, because I still expect another spectacular surprise win before the end of this season.

I think my favorite Blazers moment since Shaq's dunk, was Outlaw's late jumper to beat Atlanta. Since Shaq dunked the Blazers into oblivion in 2000, what is your favorite Blazers moment that took place on the court?

On the Court?
maybe when portland fans went crazy on the rose garden court when Stern announced Oden as the #1 pick of the blazers

Can't quite call this one my absolute favorite....
....but i love it since this is all we'll see in 2 years.

sorry I couldn't find the higher quality one.

You opened a can of worms...
even though the Video don't lie, just wait for the posts of "Bonzi was the worst Blazer ever," and "Rasheed sure was a bad Blazer."

Amid the revisionist history, we forget the wonderful moments we shared with that team. Thank you for bringing it back and warming me on this chilly Friday morning!

Oh no
Isaiah Rider was easily the worst Blazer ever.  Bonzi was like a little orc next to JR's Sauron.

However it's not inconsistent or revisionist to say they were a real pain (or the worst) while still being able to point to good moments.  You can date someone that's awful for you and flat-out an awful person and still remember all the ultra-hot...ummmm...stuff.  It's just when you grow up you realize how awful it would have been to make that relationship permanent and you stop being attracted to people like that.

Oh..you are still attracted
you just think it thru now (it helps not being a 25 yr old horndog).

revisionist history
Im not sure what wonderful moments you are referring to, at best Sheed will be remembered for his temper tantrums, and baffling lack of ability to control his anger. Sheed made those teams good, and he is a great talent, but fondness for either of those two is stretching even my Trail Blazer pathos.

Yeah... I was at that game
That was CRAZY.  I've never heard the Garden so loud.
Both Oden and Oprah endorsed Obama. Should we be concerned?

by GustyJ on Mar 21, 2008 9:41 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I would have to say it's a tie between
Brandon's Jordan-like circus shot, and the two games we won by blocking the other team's last shot (1 by Outlaw, 1 by Roy).

by Blazerholic on Mar 21, 2008 8:17 AM PDT   0 recs

My favorite moment on the court (since 2000)
is probably the game on Dec 21 against Denver that was win number 10 in the streak.  That game was great.  The crowd was unbelievable, standing and yelling the whole fourth quarter.  I was at the top of section 317, jumping up and down at the end of the game after they blocked Melo's shot, the Garden was going crazy.  Closest thing to a playoff game we've had in a long time.  Also, that Roy crossover and layup on Toronto was sick.  Amazes me everytime they replay in on the jumbotron.

My next favorite moment will be (hopefully, if I can get tickets) Opening Night 2008 when they introduce Oden.

by DrivetheLane on Mar 21, 2008 8:18 AM PDT   0 recs

Me too dude.
Me too.  I was at that game with my dad.  He's an old Blazer fan from years past who had become disgusted with what they had become.  To be able to come home on leave after following the streak of our great young team and then take my dad to that game to make him believe again is one the greatest memories I have.

Outlaw dunk over Yao Ming
or any magloire no looky dunk.... those were hilarious.

The reason I will probably love J. Jack forever was when he got in Kobe's face in the Laker brew-ha-ha of last year.

by tweener on Mar 21, 2008 8:54 AM PDT   0 recs

LMA
Obviously the games in the streak were fantastic.  Winning at Denver and at Utah were the highlights during the streak.

But watching LMA during the second half of the season is giving me chills over his future.  We can worry about his rebounding but this guy is putting together an offensive arsenal that will make him unstoppable in two years, maybe even next year.

I want to read the lost diary!
But I guess I have to settle for commenting on this one.  You did help pad the number of posts at my "Sergio & Jack both stink!!" diary, so I figure I should return the favor.

SO...I guess my favorite recent Blazer moment was Roy's game-winning shot in his inaugural Blazer game.  Remember?  Zach actually deferred to the rookie and passed him the ball, and Roy was money.  That was the dawning of the new age--the moment when you knew the Blazers had something special in this kid from Seattle.

I'll never forget
This Brandon move that totally went unnoticed until the commentator showed it in slow motion.

At the top of the key with two defenders on him, he dribbles the ball behind his back, between his legs as he splits the double team and drives to the basket.

It was a thing of beauty.  I don't know if he practices that move, or just made it up on the spot.

by blazernerd on Mar 21, 2008 11:18 AM PDT   0 recs

Too bad
He missed that shot (or was fouled or passed, I remember telling myself he did not just do that when I saw the between the legs dribble, I do know he dident get a bucket out of it)

When you've been...
a fan as long as I have you get to where you can't pick a single moment.

The only thing I'd like to say is "The Shaq Dunk" I don't even file as a "Blazer Memory". I leave that one for The L*kers and Shaq.

Fond or painful it's more the property of others, I don't want it.

Yeah
I've actually been a fan since the mid '90's but I don't want the new fans to feel left out.  It has been a lot of disappointment since that dunk.  That is my only memory of the Blazers until this year.  I sort of blacked out everything else.

I don't remember the Shaq dunk
But I do recall a Sean Elliot 3-ball in the previous seasons playoffs (the lockout shortened 99-00 year).

I don't really know you from Adam...
but I sense greatness in your posts.

I think you demean yourself too much. Every diary you make is a unique snowflake of wondrous beauty, a banquet of delights not found anywhere else, a paragon of perspective, a can of baked beans, a new vista in the human experience, a tribute to the greatness of sitting on a wet bus seat recently vacated by a giggling homeless man, the straw the stirs he drink.

That said, my favorite Blazer moment came when Rasheed Wallace threw a towel in Arthritis Sabonis' face.

My most disappointing moment? When Sabonis didn't pick Wallace up and snap him in two over his knee.

by Farty MacFartson on Mar 21, 2008 3:00 PM PDT   0 recs

I feel demeaned
knowing your favorite moment involves the Trail Blazers most ingrateful player ever dissing embarressingly so a great player and person who is Sabonis.

Sabonis did nothing to earn Rasheed's abuse. As to Sabonis suggestively cowering from Rasheed, that is simple blasphemy. Discretion is the better part of valor, and it took alot more courage for Sabonis to TAKE IT then it did to string Wallace up, which Sabonis easily could have done. Wallace was wrong to have behaved that way, and deserves to be cast correctly as the kind of person he has proven himself to be time and time again. Sabonis is a Trail Blazer legend, and hardly laughingstock. Oh well, thats on you.

Uhhh....
The problem with text is that it's hard to let people know when you're being facetious.

Personally, I have no idea how AS kept his cool, but it further cemented my opinion of him as a professional. Along with his (ex)-wives' legal troubles, I've always thought that incident was the last straw for his days as a Trailblazer.

i completely understand
often times the "tone" of such messages is difficult to interpret. Im guilty of such criticism, even though its frequently not the intent.

as long as you are a blazer fan who respects Arvydas' contributions more then Rasheeds, you're ok with me.

favorite moment
thems slim pickens, but Darius putting up 40+ at Boston before he went down was a work of art. This may seem strange considering nobody wants Darius to go away more then me, but at the time, he was unstoppable and impressive.

I realize that this means I am an old fart...
but my favorite memory was, and is winning the Championship back in 1977. And I am confident that when we win our next Championship (2010?) every single one of you will have no choice but to make that your favorite moment.

Yeah
And for a guy who hates fighting on the court, this is bizarre, but my favorite moment was Lucas smacking Dawkins.

Dawkins took a cheap shot at Gross, and was backing away when Lucas arrived from the other end of the court.  Chocolate Thunder indeed.

It was then I knew we were going to win.  All of a sudden, all those big name stars for Philly were just guys that Lucas could knock over if he needed to, and they couldn't mess with us.

I'm frequently right, but always certain

My favorite moment since the Shaq dunk
Before this season I would have to go with almost coming back against the Mavs in general.  Hookshot's video is a good enough summary "moment".  That's kinda sad considering that it ended with us completely blowing it in game seven when the entire Mavericks team, an even their fans, started that game on their knees waiting for the deathblow.

This season it's a tie between the 2-block win against Denver and Outlaw's "#@%#% this, just give me the ball, I'm gonna go win the game" shot against Atlanta in overtime.

2006 Draft
My favorite moment since that dumb game 8 years ago was the 06 Draft. I realized then that it was a whole new ball game, and we are possibly building the team of the future. Looking back, 06 could be looked at as the most pivotal year in the team's history, just like 69 was for the Steelers when they brought in Chuck Noll and drafted Joe Greene(I know I talk about the 70's Steelers when I think of today's Blazers because I am hoping for a similar turnaround) or in 79 when the Niners brought in Bill Walsh, Montana, and Dwight Clark.

I've been awfully busy lately...
..but little Sawyer is down for a nap, so I can lay down a brief comment in support of TiH and the GDitW.

Early on this year, Outlaw knocked someone down driving to the hoop.  Being the polite sort, he offered his stricken opponent a hand up.  Joel stepped over and slapped Trout's hand away.  The look between the two said it all.

I think the streak started shortly thereafter.

Sweet
I think I should change my favorite recent memory to Joel's 25 rebounds game.

Clearing Room For The Blazers Out West

As the playoff picture begins to take shape it becomes clear that the Western Conference is one big game of musical chairs. There are nine viable playoff teams; unfortunately there are only eight playoff spots. For the Blazers to get a spot, one of last year's playoff teams needs to fall off. Someone's going to be caught standing when the music stops. The following are possible scenarios that could derail each team on their quest for playoff glory, helping the Blazers get back to the postseason for the first time since 2003.
