Frye Leading Team in Dead Ball Blocked Shots

I knew Channing Frye had a philosophy behind blocking shots after the whistle had blown.

http://trailblazerscentercourt.blogspot.com/2008/03/channing-frye-is-messing-with-your-mind.html

It has been a joy to watch him lead the team in this stat this year, although James Jones might rival him if he had not missed so many games.  I am happy to see Casey making all Blazer fans aware of this unique committment to excellence by Channing.  I brought this up months ago as a reason to not trade Frye.  My comment is the ninth from the top.

I especially enjoy how coach Monty thinks it is stupid but Channing sticks to his guns and keeps knocking away meaningless shots.  Maybe Frye has contributed to a win or two this year by simply keeping guys from gaining confidence in their shot.

Actually
If a ball is blocked and a foul is called on someone else/Frye prevents a 3 pt play. Right?

If its what I'm thinking of
It's probably goal-tending.

Love it
I've always liked it when Frye does that.  NO FREEBIES BABY.

Yes, but
do you love it when Dirk or Garnett does that?

NOOOOO
IT MAKES ME SO MAD!!!

I'm okay with Frye making other people mad.
Just as long as he doesn't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Saint Mary's - Channing's high school
Sensitive - Channing cares
Baritone horn - Channing played the baritone horn in junior high

See, I like Frye
He is funny and smart and has an actual personality.  I hope he is a Blazer for his career for these reasons.

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on the court because of his time with the Knicks killing him and making him bigger than he wanted to be, and because we've been trying to make him more of a banger than he will ever be.  As long as we don't expect Channing to be anything he ain't meant to be, we should be happy with what he gives us.

Since he's smart, I think he'll develop into a wily veteran who gets things done.  I dunno if he'll be happy on the Blazers like he says he will, because he'll always play behind Oden and LMA, but I'm happy to have him here.

Monty is wrong if he thinks knocking the dead ball shots out of the air doesn't do anything.  It definately affects a shooter trying to get a flow going, and annoys the other team.  That's why KG and Dirk do it all of the time.  If you're struggling with your shot, seeing it go in really helps.  Frye knocking the dead ball out of the air gets in their head, even if only a little bit.  And, like, every little bit helps or sumthin'.

And to answer Dheepan, what you are describing would not be a dead ball.  If a guy is fouled in the act of shooting and puts a shot up, that is a live ball and knocking it out of the air on the way down is goaltending.  What Frye does is knock shots out of the air during dead ball scenarios, like when someone is fouled off of the ball and the dribbler just throws up a practice shot before giving the ball to the refs.  It happens a dozen times a game.  Frye then goaltends the dead ball shot so it doesn't go in, disrupting the shooter (in theory).

I like this Frye, and I hope he stays happy with his role in Portland.  I like guys who are cool enough to like Portland.  It annoys me when some of our players can spend an entire career in Portland and think Portland is Tualitin.  That sucks.

Oden is moving to Portland proper now, too!  See, I like that Oden guy as well.  The rest of you will catch on later.

it's definitely
you're an awesome poster, Mortimer, and I hate the spelling police generally, but you always spell definitely wrong, and it's a jarring part of your generally otherwise flawless posts.
So get with it.

Getin with it wil be gotten.  I can turn my seeson round!  It will define my seeson, definItely!

In my defense though, I think I'm just spelling definitely the British way.  Yeah, that is "it".

Huh
No Brit would honour such a suggestion.  Colour me unimpressed.

You know what bugs me?
When people write dominate as an adjective, instead of dominant. Not that Mortimer would ever do that, so I guess I'm a bit OT.

Man...
That is really petulate of you.

by tssbro on Mar 22, 2008 1:35 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Feel the same
He may cost too much to keep around long-term but maybe not.  I have liked him since the "buffet of goodness" comment.  The committment to excellence in the area of dead ball blocked shots has endeared him even more.

I hope he works with Oden on this aspect of the game.

As Dikembe would say....
NOT IN MY HOUSE!!!
I love this play, I believe it shows a lot dedication and intelligence from the guy who does that, consistently, night in, night out...
When I used to play this used to enrage me, it sends you the message that there won't be a single easy shot, you're gonna have to fight with your life just to be able to put up a shot... it goes a long way showing your determination not to let down at any moment of the game...
I say you let the kid do what he does 'cause he does good...at least in that area of the game...

Might be the best article I've read this year
I love Frye's philosophy. This is probably the best basketball article/post/whatever you want to call it I've read this year. By "best" I mean it entertained me while telling me something I didn't know. It is a true art that needs to be appreciated more.

by terryisntbald on Mar 21, 2008 10:08 PM PDT   0 recs

I'm glad he does this
Because every team did it to us all year last season and we never did it once. Now it happens constantly.

He also
Everytime an opponent misses a free throw, he walks into the lane, grabs the ball, bounces it a couple of times, and hands it to the ref.  I do not know if that is in the same philosophy, but it seems he does it deliberately.

by clonigro on Mar 22, 2008 10:02 AM PDT   0 recs

I like that
Shooting and hitting DOES help when you're rythm is off and not seeing that ball go in is anoying as heck.

I like Frye, and I hope he plays better next year.  I'd rather keep him than outlaw in all honesty, but he needs to get better and be more consistent.

Outlaw is awesome, but he's not steady.

Team OK just has to say that we'll take the lead with no delay. We have the players to keep the pace and in the end we'll win the race.
