Local Radio Talking Blazers out Their Rumps
I've about had it with Big Suke & Ropp from 1080 the fan. Today they blathered on for 20 minutes about how dangerous it is for "bloggers" to have media credentials to be in the locker room. Their point is that soon the Blazers will be letting just anybody in and that Bloggers cannot be trusted to use good judgement in reporting. I couldn't help thinking that this must be directed squarely at our very own Ben Golliver.... and that really ticked me off.
1080's recent offenses to Blazer's Edge:
Cmon 1080... it sounds like you are threatened... or you feel that now your credentials are less special because a blogger shares the same access?? The only way you can make it right for me is to get Dave back on the Radio as a regular guest. That was so much fun hearing Dave talk with Gavin on the radio.
Thanks Ben for representing us well & please keep it up.

If he wants, yes
Ben does cover everything that happens at the arena and has access to the locker room just like all the other media folks.
It's always kind of discouraging to hear people say things like apparently the radio folks did. I'm not sure that they've ever read our blog. But what can you do except keep trying to do the best you can and improve your coverage with every game? That's what we're focused on. The rest will take care of itself.

Hey tweener!
I too miss Gavin D. WTF?
Listening to "The Fan" squawk about the NBA A.S. game was like fingers on a chalk board, they missed the point completely.
I. Ropp has developed no niche in the radio business (that I can see) that will make this a career move of any security. I'm sorry to say that I just don't agree with what he mostly has to say.
1080 is off my favorite list. B.E. continues to be my source of info P Town sports related.
P.S. Is Joel a stand up tough guy or what? Tonite screams to us all who pay attention that he better be part of the Broadway street parade in 2010 or 2011. The man is a class act.

my guess
i doubt that they know who i am.
i was on press row and in the press room with suke tonight and didn't sense any ill will. given my tendency for paranoia, i like to think i'd be able to pick up on that.
i think we are best off channeling this energy into suggestions about how we can improve our coverage and less into ragging on anyone else. i'm always all ears!
i do appreciate the kind words, tweener.

I don't listen to sports radio much
I do download their interviews sometimes when it is a Blazer related interview, but they are just standard radio people. I can't imagine they have a real thought out view on bloggers in the locker room, and are just filling air time with a semi hot topic.
If a team feels like a blog is professional and of high quality (such as Blazers Edge, natch), what does it matter if they are a blogger? Acting like blogging is a dirty untrustworthy word is kinda old and outdated. There are Sam Smiths of the blogging world just like there are Sam Smiths in the traditional media world, and at least a team can see if a blog is GOOD before granting credentials. Newspapers and radio get grandfathered into their press passes, no matter how much they might suck (not a knock on Jason Quick, who I think does a great job).
Some arguing AGAINST blogs being granted press credentials seem to think that ANY blog is being granted game and locker room access. A blog really has to prove themselves to be allowed the same access as traditional media, and often has the same high standards. It isn't the free for all anti-bloggists imagine in their old-tymey heads...
The basketball blogs I read have much, much, MUCH higher standards than any sports radio I have ever listened to in the history of the universe and space and time (I have not listened to Gavin Dawson, who a lot here seem to like). Sports radio has no authority to say ANYONE is irresponsible with their reporting, especially when they simply aren't knowledgable about the subject.
Ben does a great job, and even the most cursory of research into the subject of bloggers at Blazer games would reveal this. General "not knowing what they are talking about" is why I don't listen to sports radio regularly.
It's too lazy for my tastes.

I actually called in last night
While on hold waiting for my turn to talk, you get the radio feed pumped in as the "hold" music, and everything they said just screamed that they didn't really have a clue what they were talking about. Like normal they are a couple of days behind the story that truehoop, (a blog btw) and Mark Cuban started. Because a caller is only given so much time, I had to be brief and just said that while I agree that a governing body for bloggers, or some kind of ethics panel, who can judge which blogs are worthy would seem ideal, I don't see that happening. I said Blogs are going to be here, they are a new media and sports teams should embrace them, like the Blazers have with Blazersedge, and even hireing their own blogger. They obviously have done some research on Blazeredge before giving Ben his pass, and felt that it was a crediable site for Blazer info to be passed along. In the end my opinion was that for now, I think it is up to the teams to decide who gets in and who doesn't, and I think they should look to give access to bloggers, if they feel the blog lives up to normal journalistic standards.
However there was much more that I wanted to say.
- Issac and the Big Suck, are not internet guys. I don't know if Suke can do much more than navigate internet explorer, and for the most part he only goes to websites that his friends send him, like www.allballsallthetime.com. Their view that all bloggers are writing out of their momma's basement is basically slander on every good blogger out there. They are not the only media people to have this view either, as Bob Costis(sorry I can't spell his last name) recently said that all bloggers are losers, or something to that affect.
- They kept going on about how some blogger is going to go too far, and there is no way to get back at them if they do. Well there is a way to get back, you deny them access, or take away the access you have given them. It is very easy to sit someone down and lay the ground rules down before you give them access, and if they break the rules, then their access is revoked. Slander lawsuits are not needed, but could be used if someone really wanted to, (with free speach, I doubt you would win a case like that unless it was really blatant).
- Credibilty, they talked about how do you decide who gets in and who doesn't. Well there are some very easy ways to decide this, (truehoop and some good ideas as well) but the first that come to my mind are; readership and advertising. If a blog has a following that can generate advertising then it should be worth a teams time to take a look at that blog if they request access. If a blog is getting 10,000 hits a day, then they might want to consider giving that site some access to spread news about their team, after all it is basically free advertising for the team. For now the team will have to make the decision if that same site has high enough journalistic integrity for them to get access, but again with ground rules set, I don't see it as much of an issue.
- Both of 1080's hosts are way behind the times. The internet is where the people of my generation get our news, (I am 29). Unlike Issac and Suke suggest, I am more than capable of telling the good blogs, from the bad ones. There is a big difference between Blazersedge, which has advertisers, and a set code of ethics, and John Doe sports page, that is filled with rants about his favorite teams. Rational, reasonable people can tell the difference and don't believe bs when they hear it. Listening to these two makes one believe that people are generally morons, and just believe whatever they hear or read.
- And on a side note, wouldn't it be great if the only sports radio station in the Portland area would have at least one show dedictated to the only pro sports team in the area? I mean the Mike Terico(again I can't spell his name) is gawd awful terrible. Why can't we have a local Blazers centered show on the air in the middle of the day, espcially during the season. 2 hours of Blazer talk by reasonably informed people would make me listen at work, and in the car more than any other show they have on their station at the present point. Blazermaina is going to hit full force next season, you would think that the sports radio station would want a piece of that. It amazes me when I think of how bad the coverage of this team is on the fan now that Gavin is gone.

There are some rumors going around
AND
Paul Allen is going to switch 95.5 FM to sports programming and pick up ESPN Radio. Blazers games and other local sports would move to FM as well. I hope this happens.

This is what is needed
We all feel like the BlazerMania is back in the best way and now is the time it should be capitalized on through well-done professional coverage. We see the Blazers attempting to get there with the Comcast Station largely devoted to Blazers and yesterday unveiled a Blazers post-game show.
I think the fan has been stepping on some toes, first with messing with Rome's slot and covering Cowherd through Rome's first hour, then joining him live for two hours only to replay the first hour after. This presentation didn't sit well Rome's people and they pulled out. Now Dan Patrick is back on as a solo entity similar to Rome.
This will not sit well with ESPN as Dan Patrick has left them and now competes with their programming.
Gavin was providing solid Blazer conversation on Saturdays and developing a great post-game show Even featuring Dave. That is gone with Gavin's firing (which I haven't heard an explanation for)
How could they jack the only Blazer coverage they were providing? With that, he seamed to be the only member of the station that had an informed view and opinion. It's the middle of the season for the Blazers, our only pro sports team, BlazerMania is back, 19,000 people show up to every game, and the sports radio channel barely spares a mention of them? I'm done with that station.
This is completely ridiculous and I hope Allen continues trying to get the Blazers out there in radio and TV. Leaving "1080 The Amateur Fan" out of the loop would be the best way to do it.

the story i have heard
the same person told me that other location stations also owned by Entercom were hit worse than The Fan.
i have no way to verify this information so i realize this isn't much to go on. please do not treat this as gospel.
i loved gavin like many of you. i called into his show on various occasions and he always had a quick respone to whatever i said. an impressive guy all around.

Gavin?
I think they try to look at Collin Cow and try to emulate his topics and humor but Collin is Collin and Ropp and Suck are worse than anyone I've heard on the radio. Its like tabloid crap.
The day I hear an intelligent well informed conversion about our only pro franchise on our only sports station, I'm over it.

i'm sure there are people that know the portland radio scene better than i do who can confirm whether or not other local radio personalities got bad news as well.
but, my general answer was: entercom corporate downsizing.

Conspiracy Journalism...
Here is where my conspiracy theroy is: Cuban was the person who really made a media spectacle out of bloggers with media credentials. Of course radio shows (sports based and others) ran the story because it came over the "wire". The next morning Colin Cowherd had it on his ESPN show. I heard it there. That evening it was a topic on Suke & Ropp's 1080 show. Suke basically copied all of Cowherds feelings on this and played them off as his own.
"Journalists" get paid, but they are mainly paid by sponsors, and the bosses of those journalists favor doing things that make sponsors happy, or that can make more money for the media group. Bloggers are not "journalists" and do not have bosses censoring them. They do not have sponsors censoring them. They do not multi-billion dollar people controlling their livelihood. Bloggers are a REAL media outlet where communication is a TWO-WAY street; rather than a ONE-way media stream that the USA is used to. Meaning: media companies use Journalists as their One-direction communication of what they want others opinions to be. For Journalists and Media groups, Pro Sports isn't just big business it is an entire industry. They want to remain relevant and "a great source of information". People, ,like us bloggers, do make these sports journalists irrelevant to a point. Take Suke for example...
If his opinion is the only one NOT censored... then he is relevant. The second we are all on a blog posting about how stupid and ignorant he can sound when he rants about something, he has lost all his relevancy on that arguement and can loose "fans" simply by other people reading negative comments about a radio personality that has not been challenged (because of the radio format).
Blogs are a great way to learn and understand many different sides of any story. Blogs are a now a serious threat to Media companies trying to keep control of the sporting news industry.
