Gameday Open Thread: Bulls vs. Blazers

We have to end this homestand with a win, don't we?  I think so.  Raise your hand if you think that would be a good idea before facing a road trip with Detroit, Indiana, Houston, and Dallas on the docket.

Register all of your pre-, in-, and post-game thoughts here.

Plus don't forget to check out the always-raucous SBN Bulls site BlogaBull for the opposing view.

Easy win
It's been a painful homestand.  Great games, competed in every game, but three losses.  If we don't win this, I think we begin to slump back into the whole question of where we end up in the lottery.

Win it, and we keep ourselves in the hunt.  We have to stay in touch, and this road trip is a killer.

Get Martell some open looks, we can use some early 3s.

Deng should be out for the game
I didn't see Dave add this in his game preview, but Deng has been out for at least a week and should be out for 2 weeks more.  His chronic back problems have really been bothering him and I hope for his sake he gets it straightened out-- though obviously it helps us for tonight.

I thought Deng would have a big break out year this season, but his back has held him up and he just hasn't looked right.  I'm a big fan of his game and think he could be one of the best wings in the NBA, but only if he can shake this injury bug.  He has a long torso like McGrady, and that can make it easier to have back ailments.

Hinrich and Nocioni can get real hot or get so cold that they completely shoot their team out of the game.  Overall, Nocioni is an incredibly annoying player even for Bulls fans (that's what stopping by Blog a Bull will tell me).  Tyrus Thomas should be playing big minutes for the rest of the season because this has become a lost year for the young Bulls, but for some reason the coaching staff is completely holding him back.  I almost hope it's an attitude or bb-IQ problem, because I can't see any on the court reason not to play him.  He doesn't have much real skill and is just an athletic freak, but you gotta let him loose and allow him to create some chaos on the court.  Why the Bulls don't try to develop their big lottery pick from last season is one of the mysteries of life...

I hope Ben Wallace has one of his "I don't feel like jumping to get a rebound" games.

The Bulls had such high expectations; a young team ready to make the jump.  When they started floundering still even after their traditional slow start, I wondered to me self if in the upcoming seasons the young Blazers could falter like the Bulls did.  I came to the conclusion that while both teams have had success at young ages based around lots of jump shooting, the make up and balance of our roster far surpasses what the Bulls currently have and we won't likely fall prey to their tragedy.

We got Oden and a growing LMA, so we got the big men the Bulls don't got.  Roy doesn't put up the big scoring numbers that Gordon can sometimes, but Roy is much more consistent and a better playmaker than Hinrich and Gordon combined.  He's also a great leader, something the Bulls seem to lack.  Just like us this year, they are a team of jump shooters but they have been cold all year.  The difference is Roy, the potential of LMA, and Oden coming next year.

With 20/20 hindsight, it almost seems like this Bulls team was bound to fall back to Earth.  But it sure didn't seem likely with how they've done the past few years...

Whether we make the playoffs or not, we won't really know true disappointment.  Bulls fans sadly have to feel honest to goodness frustrating disappointment all dang season.

We gotta win this game.  C'mon LMA, break outta 'dat damn slump and show the Bulls what LaMania Aldridgalicious is all about!

Hinrich
The Oregonian had Hinrich as Day to Day this morning, and the Associate Press has he and Gordon Day to Day.  I hadn't heard anything about Gordon, he should play.  However, Hinrich may not play because of a bruised rib.  He was not with the team yesterday.

I have a question that is not worth a diary
and this is the place it will be seen.

If Shaq had been voted as an eastern conference starter or reserve, what would happen now that he is back west?

I heard some espn guys
examining the same situation if Kidd were to be traded to dallas.  There isnt a rule on it as far as they said.  They suggested that Kidd be added to the west roster and a reserve or possibly 2 be added to the east roster.  Doesnt make a lot of sense to me, but thats what I remember them saying...

Play 'em as voted & picked
Too late to change now. Amend the rules or change the Trade Dead line to correct this situation. The All Star game doesn't count toward anything. It is a "Show Case" of Players. I can just let it be and enjoy, unless I've got something riding on it!

Hmmm... line on the game is 5.5 even with Deng out.  I'd figure it to be more like 7.5.  People losing faith in the Blazers, think that winning streak was a fluke?

Blazers need a solid win tonight.  I can't handle another 17 point comeback win.

NEW STARTING LINEUP
Quick says in his blog that Nate will try a new starting line up to even out the black and white unit.  Jack moves to starting SG, and Webster moves to the bench.

As long as Webster understands this is so he can get more shots and help the team more from the bench until Jones gets bck, then I am fine with it.  The main obstacle to moving Martell to the bench has been the possibility that it'll ruin him mentally for a bit, so I hope he gets that this is GOOD for him and good for the team.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2008/02/new_starting_lineup_and_possib.html

Quick also points out that LMA might be replaced by Jor-El in 4th quarters if we don't get more out of him.

This is the suspected new rotation until the all star break, or until Jones gets back, or until it is proven to be awful or awesome.

CHICAGO WON'T KNOW WHAT HIT 'EM.

by Lizzy Lowblow on Feb 6, 2008 5:39 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry
No, only change is Jack at SG.  So the new lineup is:

PG-- Blake
SG-- Jack
SF-- Roy
PF-- LMA
C--  Jor-El

Article also says Nate considers Outlaw exclusively a 4 now.  That's why he hasn't played Joel in the final minutes much, because it means taking out Outlaw or LMA.  Because of LMA's struggles, Nate is considering the change unless he gets more out of LMA.

I actually prefer
Outlaw in the 2nd unit.  Keeping his role simple and not having to be the 3rd option has really helped him this year, I think.  As long as Martell keeps his head on straight, I like him with the 2nd unit and Jones (when he comes back healthy) with the first unit-- Martell does better when he's more of the focus, and like Quick mentions he has had some good games recieving kick outs from Sergio.

Jones' shooting and smarts helps any unit, but he's probably a better fit with the starters.

I want whatever works best and still develops Marty and Trout.

This is a big chance for sergio...
I think this decision is about putting the ball in Sergio's hands more.  With this starting lineup, sergio becomes the only real point guard off the bench.  I am curious to see how the white unit does with sergio running the show and Jack on the bench...

Concerns and questions
First, I am wondering if Nate has reverted to his "Sarge" personality in his attitude toward LMA and any other player having shooting difficulties.

Secondly, shouldn't we have players with fresh legs used in the 4th quarter and any OT periods?  In other words why not take out players so they get 5 minutes of game clock time (really 10 plus real minutes) of rest.

3rd, is it wise to us Roy for 43 or more minutes per game?   He plays hard and could pick up extra bruises to limit his ability.

4th, McRoberts is not getting any opportunities to show what he can do.   One of the prime strategies for this year was to evaluate talent and he needs a fair chance a real game time for that.   (This also applies to T Green although he has had some minutes as I remember.)

Roy was -7 tonight in +/- ...
................. I think you might be on to something.

I keep having to remind myself
that I would have been happy with this type of performance at the start of the year.  I'm trying not to be spoiled but its tough after seeing such a long stretch of great play.

I love that they have shown the JJ travel in slow
motion like 6 times, never mentioning the travel. if the refs call that correctly, he's the dog again. he better get his last second drives under control.

by sergioFTW on Feb 6, 2008 9:44 PM PST reply actions

To be fair
The refs screwed up nearly every call tonight, so it made only sense they'd screw that one up, too.

by damir on Feb 6, 2008 11:04 PM PST up reply actions

Good point, that...
.............. It was the law of averages, one HAD to go the Blazers' way after so many fantasy calls the other direction. Somebody needs to stop putting hallucinogens in the refs' Gatorade bucket...

akamian
i like akamian...but i always thought holton was the worst of the two between him and luftman.

is it official that luftman is gone then?  they didnt really say anything about it.

by Philthyanimal on Feb 6, 2008 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

I think Luftman made Holton worse
Luftman was the Zach Randolph of the studio team.

100% agree
and it's kind of proven by how tolerable the shows have been with Holtman still around but Luftman gone.

Never had a good memory...
.................for Armenian names.

I think Bob Akavian was the head of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade, a charming band of Maoist looney-tooners. Which makes the malaprop fitting for Chinese New Year's Eve, I reckon...

Holton has been much better since Luftman left (man).

by robrun2 on Feb 6, 2008 11:45 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, Holton wasn't the problem.
I always thought Luftman was ickky. Bob and Mike are OK. I bet they get better.

What will be the future of our Blazers. Just a few seasons ago, the Blazers were going to be the OKC of the NBA but injuries to Roy and Oden crippled our dreams of a young championship contender for years and years.

Colonel Rondo and his second round armada?

If Boston is determine to rebuild and cut salary isn’t two mid lotto pics and the right salary filler decent. Maybe not enough but better than what most teams get in that situation. I would prefer that over the Chris Paul package.

I hope and figure that the Trail Blazers could have the best of both worlds. I’ve never seen a more bountiful 2nd round. Its conceivable that the team could deal both lotto picks and still find some nice players in the draft. Players like Orlando Johnson, Lucas Nogueira, Kevin Jones, Will Barton are 1st rounders in most drafts even if its just based on hype and potential. Then you have some possible gems in such a deep draft like Machado, a couple guys that I personally like from Georgetown-their center Henry Sims and forward Hollis Tompson. Both high upside players that I would love to watch in the summer league. If PA were to ever buy into or trade into late first or second round now is the time. Give me Freeland, Diebler and four second rounders in the summer league with Rondo coaching.
