Designated "that reffing sucked" thread + poll

I dont know what to say, that 3rd quarter officiating really didnt give us a chance in my opinion.  There were so many bad calls, so, many.  Its no surprise that boston outscored us 32-17 in that quarter.  It carried into the fourth as well but only long enough to make sure boston had locked down a win.  How much did the refs influence this game?

I hate (and I mean hate!) blaming the refs
That being said, that was one of the worst called games I can remember.  And it wasn't completely one sided although it definitely slanted towards Boston's.  It surprised me that a fight didn't break out.  Loved how the Blazers pushed back, had an advantage at the foul line (and made their shots!).  But when Boston got mad they played harder and better.  We played hard, but not necessarily better.

I hate blaming the referees too
But the NBA has been fishy the last decade or more, and I don't think it's unfair anymore to blame the officiating. Today's game was horrible and it's not the amount of calls to one side or another, it's the timing of the calls. When a team is starting to change the momentum of the game and a bad call is called, that's all it takes sometimes.

The fourth quarter of the Western Conference Finals against L.A. in 2002, the Dallas and Miami Finals a couple years ago. There is too much money in it and sometimes you can just tell there is an agenda.

I'd like not to think that there are more Tim Donaghys out there and that all of the officiating mistakes are all just human mistakes but it doesn't always feel that way. My father quit watching the game today in the third quarter (We're watching it on the internet because we have the Dish) because he knew Portland wouldn't be able to win the game, it wasn't going to be allowed. It's a sad thing when sports make you feel like that.

It was bizarre
because a zillion more fouls were called on the Celtics, and yet there STILL seemed to be room for ridiculous calls against the Blazers.  It's like the refs decided to pull out the rule book and call some really obscure ones tonight.

My favorite..
... was the double foul called in which Aldridge was   tackled from behind by Allen (I think?) while going for the rebound.

a momentum killer
Not to mention, how can you commit a foul when the guy has his arm all the way around your neck?

Also
I joked to my friend during the 3rd quarter that Mr. Stern must have placed a phone call through to Mr. Salvatore at halftime.

I still say the Boston players could have...
traveled all of the way to the beach with out getting called for it. Wheels even watched a slow replay of one and counted out all of the extra steps and moves. I don't remember what the count was but it was so bad that it left no doubt that it was blatant.

My favorite
Posey pulls down a rebound/loose ball, travels at least twice before falling down, doesn't have control of the ball after he falls down with Webster fighting him for the ball and he is awarded a time out.

That said, the Celtics are better than the Blazers this year.  We looked great for a quarter, held on for another one but just were not good enough to keep it up for four quarters.

Blaming refs makes you look silly
The refereeing is terrible in the NBA, of that there is NO DOUBT.  But to whine that it affects your team more than the others.  Meh, that's weak.  I've watched almost every Blazer game this season and I have yet to see one in which the Blazers lost due to the refereeing.

The Toronto game.
The ref ruled Calderon's shot right before the end of regulation was a three, when his foot was on the line.  Travis win's the game rather than sending it into OT with his shot.

wrong.
If he called that a two then our last possesion changes and who knows what happens. I doubt we even would have tried a three.  You can't say we lost that game because of the refs.

Refereeing is a difficult job and they are human.
Compare a world class soccer match refs with NBA refs.  I just saw the other day in a Champions League match, the soccer ref gave the player a yellow card for flopping in the penalty box which could result in a penalty kick.  Why did he give him the yellow card you ask.  Because he was trying to cheat and its not very sportsman him.  If you are good enough, why would you need to cheat to win?  In soccer, its more about the quality of play, game itself and playing the fair game.

Thats why the USA can't win the World Championships in basketball.  On a level playing field, the US can't play good basketball.  Spain is the current World Champions of basketball which included Sergio and Rudy.  Sergio can play ball for sure just on his resume, he needs more PT to get comfortable with "NBA ball."

I'm glad I'm not a Boston Celtic Fan.  Watch my team playing dirty basketball to win games, ugghh.  When the Blazers play good solid basketball we can beat anybody in the world.  We don't need to play dirty to win games, all we have to do is simply play basketball.  As long as they play with a lot of heart and give me 110% when they are on the court, I am a happy Blazer fan win or lose.

The "real" Celtics is Celtic FC in Scotland established in 1888.

The Blazers have all been "world class" about it though but the game gets very dangerous out there when the refs don't have control of the game and our guys keep getting hurt because of it.

The NBA has no class with no sportmanship and with all the fights that has happened before I shouldn't be surprised when we get into one pretty soon.  I mean dramas are good for TV.

Its a marathon, not a sprint.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
