Simmons: Kidd to Blazers?
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/080223
Now this is interesting. Everybody's favorite columnist is back for Round 2, and this time he's dishing juicy rumors from the All-Star weekend. Page down to the first bullet point after number three. Here's the teaser to whet your interest: "One other note on Kidd that everyone missed: The most logical home for him was Portland." He proceeds to outline a possible deal and explains why he likes it.
I'll present my own thoughts about this shortly, but in the interest of not prejudicing the discussion with the sheer brilliance of my pontifications, I offer it first to you, my BE compatriots. Read that linked paragraph -- whadda y'all say?

My two cents
What we're losing: Rights to Rudy, LaFrentz, lottery-protected first-rounder, Blake.
Blake's a solid PG, but Kidd's an obvious upgrade there. We're not really losing anything by dealing LaFrentz: the two reasons for keeping him around are for the 2009 cap space and for using him as a trade chip. With this deal, we get the best of both worlds -- landing a future HoF PG whose deal also expires at the end of next season. We're almost certainly going to be in the lottery this year, meaning we'd roll that pick over to 2009 to trade. How good of a pick will we be giving up trotting out a lineup of Kidd/Roy/Jones/LMA/Oden? Low 20's, more likely mid 20's. I won't lose any sleep over losing that choice. Losing Rudy hurts, but if that's the only negative, you gotta pull the trigger on that deal.
Imagine Kidd running the break with Martell, Trout, LMA, and Oden, and imagine what the dual additions of GO and Kidd would do for our defensive rebounding. The aforementioned starting lineup is at the very least a threat to make some serious noise in the playoffs. And it's low-risk from our end. If it works out, great, and we resign Kidd with the MLE after the 2009 season. If not, we trade him at the 2009 deadline or just let him walk to free up the cap room. I feel like if this deal had been up the table, KP would have done it without thinking twice. It's more likely in my mind that NJ was demanding Martillo/Trout's inclusion as well.

Not a terrible trade but not a good one
I would use KIdd for this year then dump him next year, as he is a significant upgrade to the Raef trade chip. Now we have someone that plays!
Although it'll bring us into contention next year with another big guard what about the year after? Who is going to supercede Kidd? Sergio Rodriguez? Seriously.
Kidd is a good fit for our team though, especially this year. We need a guard with the vision to run the break. Kidd also brings a lot of toughness, leadership, and experience to this team. All things lacking in the current blazers. He can also rebound quite well, which is a huge plus.
The overriding negative is that Portland frequently gets killed by quick guards that slice and dice our perimeter D. Kidd doesn't really fix that, he might even exasperates that fatal flaw. When players like Tyron Lue and Earl Watson light you up for career nights you have issues. I could be wrong about this though, and maybe Kidd really doesn't care in NJ and is playing like crap because of it.
If you got rid of Rudy in the deal I would do it.
Maybe Sergio and Jack would learn something from Kidd's tutelage.
Getting Antawn Jamison for the MLE is retarded and makes no sense, so I'll just ignore that.
