Simmons posits Blazers trade suggestion

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/blog/index?name=simmons&entryDate=20080220

Go read it. I insist. Just make sure that you have a trash can handy, cuz I just projectile-vomited all over my computer screen and I wanna save you, my BE friends, from the same fate. For a guy who calls himself an NBA expert and the Picasso of the trade machine...paint-by-numbers maybe. This trade is awful. Awful.

That's Awsome
He had to been smoking something when he wrote that.  That is the reason why silly trade talk is silly to me.  I still love the stuff, and it is silly.

PS
He needs a "Why Portland does not do it" explanation as well.

Why Portland doesn't do it?
  1. It was suggested by Simmons

  2. LMA is a much better player than Conley and will fit perfectly with Oden

  3. If we trade Rudy he'll end being the Jermaine, except without the injury woes

  4. Raef will be a great piece for us to work with next year, why would we trade that piece for........Mike Miller of all people

  5. The only person we could possibly want from Memphis is Rudy Gay and he is not involved in the trade

Good lord
I think, coupled with Simmons' Canzano-esque New Orleans article claptrap, that he is now legally retarded.

And I'm not even a Hater.  I will even listen to his podcast if it isn't about football.  This is just a dumb, dumb trade and shows he hasn't really watched LMA-- or even knows about his faults, such as playing too far from the basket and relying on jumpers instead of a post game.  If he knew at least the LMA stereotype, he'd think that LMA and Oden fit very well together.

Mike Conley and Oden together is not a good thing.

Ugh.  This is dumb.

haha... here it is for those who dont know
An older black guy is driving. He looks like he has aged 10 years in the past three. He's gazing ahead in silence, lost in his own thoughts, oblivious to the stares from the out-of-towner covered in powdered sugar. Meanwhile, his car radio happens to be blaring a classic Tupac song, and what's really blowing my mind is that it's the chorus of the perfect song for this particular moment. If you froze the moment and asked me to pick a song, I would have picked this song. And now it's playing. And I'm frozen in midbite. I can't believe it. I'm standing there in complete disbelief.

Keep ya head up ... ooooh child, things are gonna get easier ... keep ya head up ... ooooh child, things will get brighter.

    Is this really happening?

Ooooh child, things are gonna get easier ... keep ya head up ... ooooh child, things will get brighter.

And just like that, he drove away.

That's it exactly
That was such complete Canzano, it made me cringe in embarassment for Simmons.  That kind of blatant heartstring tugging and condescending attitude towards 'the common man' is why I can't stand Johnny Canz.

Simmons is usually better when talking basketball, but I don't see why anyone does most of the trades he offered up.  So because LMA is averaging 17/8 as a second year player (which is mostly an extenstion of his rookie year), he'll "end up" as one of those guys who only scores 17/8?  I think some forget (us too) that LMA is a very young big man and those guys only improve with age and seasoning.

And adding Fernandez for long contracts and Mike Conley?  Uuuuugh.

"Oooh child"... what a cheese weiner.

Speaking of trades
Kidd is making his Dallas debut already, right now as I type.  I'm very curious to see how it works, because I gotta say I think Kidd is mad-overrated and the Mavs give up their depth with Diop.  It doesn't fix any problems they have, unless Kidd is that good of a leader.  He can't shoot, that's for sure.

Maybe Josh Howard will score more than ever now?  Kidd is good, don't get me wrongish, but I dunno if he helps the Mavs.

Oh well, I watch and see.

Simmons isn't a dumb guy but like all people who gotta fill columns and have deadlines they tend to fill it with lazy baloney.  There, I don't feel like I hijacked the thread.

Speaking of Trades part II: Electric Boogaloo
Shaq makes his debut tonight also.  With our up and down season and win streak, Roy in the all star game, all of these block buster trades... this might be the bestest, funnest season I've experienced since I was a kid.

If Shaq is suddenly healthy and in game shape (he looks skinnier, but that doesn't mean he's in game shape), it kinda makes him look like a damn liar who just didn't put his all in for the Heat.  Or, the Suns doctors really are the best.  They've held Nash up after all, and Grant Hill has played TERRIFIC this year.

Shaq on the Suns is more intriguing than Kidd on the Mavs.  To me at least.

I dunno if Simmons' silly trade ideas are less interesting because of the blockbuster deals that have happened daily lately, or just even sillier because of the REAL DEAL trades.  He's always complained about GMs having no balls, but I think he really wishes they had ADHD and prone to tinkering.  Simmons misses Trader Bob more than anyone!

San Antonio
Tim Duncan made David Robinson completely expendable right?

by preacherman on Feb 20, 2008 5:26 PM PST   0 recs

That's pretty bold
In the six seasons the duo played together, Robinson averaged more than 30 minutes per game, and his stats are thoroughly impressive during that time considering his age and the focus of the offensive shifting to Duncan.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/robinda01.html

The guy won two championships starting and playing significant minutes after Duncan's arrival, so it wasn't like he disappeared off the map.

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 21, 2008 1:55 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

The first was the strike year
which counts, but I consider it an asterisk trophy, and the second was Rob's final year, when he averaged 8 and 8 in 26 minutes.  Sorry, not "thoroughly impressive".

Number of San Antone championships in the 9 years DRob had without Duncan = 0.  Number of San Antone championships in the 4 years Duncan had without DRob = 2.  Yeah, Duncan made DRob expendable.  He won with DRob, he won with Nazr/Rasho/Oberto.

by howlingfantods on Feb 21, 2008 7:45 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Duncan grew under
Robinson's cold eye.  I can't imagine that Robinson had nothing to do with Duncan's development.  I watched the two play together.  Ask yourself whether SA was better with or without Robinson.  The answer's easy.  They were better.  That makes him not irrelevant.
Blessed are the flexible, for they never get bent out of shape.

just shows that message board posters aren't the exclusive sources of stupid trade ideas.  I usually like Simmons, but this is ridiculous.  I wouldn't trade LMA and Rudy for the entire Grizzlies team and all the pork in Memphis.

I might consider
Rudy Gay and Conley for our Rudy.

I'd need to watch them a bit and get a feel.  Gay puts up nice stats and Conley may or may not be overrated, but if he fits with Oden...

Well Bill Simmons was convinced Tyrus Thomas was better than LMA and that Emeka Okafur was better than Dwight Howard. Averaging 17 and 8 in basically your rookie year isn't impressive?

by Dheepan on Feb 20, 2008 5:37 PM PST   0 recs

Not just "better"...
He basically said the Magic were moronic maroons for taking Howard and he would be a bust.  I think Simmons can judge players decently when he actually watches them over time, but when he hasn't done his due diligence in watching a guy before judging him I'm surprised he still makes such bold claims... he's been burned so many times before and his haters love to throw it in his face.

The "Oden walks old" bit will go down as one of his worst lines, as well.

My Response
Okay, you really need to educate yourself on the basketball world out there because it's obvious you don't know Jack about the blazers.

1.)  Rudy.  This is the best player in europe right now at 22 years of age and you just told the blazers to trade him?

2.)  Aldridge is an EXCELLENT YOUNG big man.  Big men take a few years to develop and he will get better.  Also Aldridge does not duplicate Odens skills but compliments them because he's an outside in player while Oden is a post player.

3.)  There's no way the blazers want that pile of crap you're sending from memphis.  You said it yourself:

"Everyone agrees that Fernandez would be a top-10 pick if he was in this year's draft, and Aldridge is one of the better young forwards in the league"

Blazers need a point, but Broy plays the ball handler and Rudy acts as that second scorer you're talking about.  Additional, Outlaw has shown that he knows how to play in the fourth.  PLUS aldridge will only get better and is currently the second leading scorer.

4.)  Blazers have TOO MANY PG's.  We'd be emptying out a position we're empty in (PF/C) and soon to be strong (with the return of oden) and accepting another freaking PG which we already have a VERY good one stocked away in Finland.

I'd be intrigued by Conley and willing to give up Frye who is a poor man's aldridge.  Rudy is a no go because he's too talented.  He may or may not fit with the Blazer style of play, but there's no way I'd toss him without finding out because he's too good.

5.)  Blazers aren't looking for projects and Conley would be a project.  The blazers are looking to start position to challenge in two years and for their championship in three.  Conley has yet to prove he's elite, he's not a sharp 3 point shooter and the blazers will need that with oden in.  Jones fills that, but you're watching how the blazers do without Jones on these losing streaks.  Blazers need a second 3pt specialist option and again, rudy fills that.

"No way. I love this town. We're gonna bring back the glory years. These boys are my boys. This is my team and my town." - Greg Oden when asked about leaving.

Well, I guess it all depends on how good
Conley is.  I mean, if he ends up as Chris Paul the second, yeah I'd make the trade.  But if he's just TJ Ford the second, obviously terrible trade for us.  So the question is, Is Conley CP3?  Or is he Ford (minus the fragility)?

He's had flashes that made me think he might have Paul's upside, but honestly I think he's just a slightly smarter Ford.  Bad trade I think, but I could be wrong -- lord knows I don't watch the Grizzlies all that much.

by howlingfantods on Feb 20, 2008 7:49 PM PST   0 recs

Actually
it's more a question of known vs unknown.

We don't know and the blazers are done with projects.  They're ready to start moving forward.  Conley is a  project and fingers crossed.  We know what we get with Rudy and Aldridge.

Known versus unknown?
Aldridge is not that much more a known quantity than Conley is.

Rudy's a euro.  I think we're still far from assuming that success in the euro leagues always translates to the big leagues.

Not completely ridiculous
We need a point guard and could use an elite shooter.

His take on Aldridge might be dead on.  Could he develop into a 20/9 guy? Sure, but Simmons might be absolutely right.

I wouldn't do it because I like Aldridge and Rudy but its not nearly as ridiculous as some of you guys are saying.

by jksnake99 on Feb 20, 2008 8:26 PM PST   0 recs

Dito
It's a more realistic trade than most of the ones that I have seen. The inclusion of the Blazers 2008 number 1 pick strikes me as the straw that breaks the camel's back. If the Blazers lose Aldridge, they'd need that pick for a PF.

If Conley were Chris Paul, I'd do it.

by PoliSam on Feb 20, 2008 8:36 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

perfectly put
For us to give up that much, we'd need to be getting a truly elite PG in return (like CP3).  Conley could be that, but he's not enough of a sure thing to give up that much.

by jksnake99 on Feb 20, 2008 8:42 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Which
is why i'm against it.  We get too much unknown for two guys that we KNOW will be good and good big men aren't that common.  Players like rudy are ALSO not that common.

by ratbastird on Feb 20, 2008 9:11 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I dunno...
I feel like it's a pretty darn bad trade proposal.

  1. David West in his 3rd season: 17.1 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 51.4% FG, .9 BPG, 34 MPG.  LMA in his second season: 16.9 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 48.4% FG, 1.3 BPG, 34.3 MPG.  They play very similar face-up, jump-shooting styles, so I feel like it's a valid comparison. West was just an All-Star and LMA's ahead of his development curve. I think this deal undervalues Aldridge's potential, and I think he'll be better than West.

  2. Why do we need an elite shooter? Here are the three-point percentages of the top shooters on our team: 48.3, JJ2; 43.5, Blake; 39.7, Outlaw; 37.6, Webster.  Rudy has NBA range and will get lots of open looks with doubles being thrown at our big three. I'd be shocked if out of those five, four of them aren't shooting 40% or above from deep next year. The only other team that can stake that claim currently is Toronto. The last thing we need is another jump shooter who plays questionable defense.

  3.  Both Miller and Cardinal's contracts run through 2010, and the latter one is awful: more than the MLE for a guy who wouldn't sniff the court for us.  Goodbye to 2009 cap space and KP's master plan; equally important would our severely curtailed ability to make smaller adjustments, not just a big FA splash.

  4. Do we really need a point guard? Within the last ten years, teams led by Avery Johnson, Derek Fisher, and Jason Williams/Smush Parker have won titles. Blake can't play the AJ/DF "veteran who gets the ball to the right spot at the right time and knock down an open three" role? Really?

  5. Let's remember who our GM is. Do we really want to give away a 12.8 million expiring deal and a lottery pick in this deal? I think Prich has already proven himself to be a draft maestro; I'm not taking his little composer's baton away from him to make THIS trade. Let's ask AI for his thoughts.  Allen? "We're not talkin' 'bout a second-rounder, man, we're talkin' 'bout a lottery pick.  A lottery pick."  So it appears that Allen and I agree.

  6.  So to recap: we're giving away a guy who's ALREADY one of the best young bigs in the league today and hasn't even scratched the surface of his potential, a "consensus top ten pick in this year's draft", another lottery pick, and contract with excellent trade value in the very near future in exchange for a jump shooter who doesn't play defense (hey, THAT fills a need on the roster!), an unproven and very young point guard (good thing we don't have any of those!) and a cap-killing albatross contract through 2010. Oh and Memphis's No. 2. That's the pot sweetener right there! Where do I sign!

my problem with his 17-8 statement
He makes 17 ppg and 8 rpg sound bad... it's bad if Aldridge is only doing that on a 35 win team... but when were a 50 win team someday, and Aldridge has an efficient 17 and 8... I'd be thrilled.

Wow.
Wow.  Wow.

OK, I've processed and it makes perfect sense: You've got to agree we just grab too many rebounds so could use a couple of less bigs finally making room for a 5th point guard, ohh, and yes, we really need a shooter.  We can't shoot the ball at all, if there's one thing the Blazers are weak at it's jump shooting.  Plus who wants that chain smoking Euro forming some sort of Spanish Cartel with Sergio?  Jailblazers indeed.  Finally, we don't have to worry about how much less effective Lamarcus will be once Oden arrives, I stayed up at night worrying about what Lamarcus was going to do... how would he deal with so much attention being paid to Oden all the time.  (In my best Jan Brady voice): "Oden, Oden, Oden!"  All that perma-mediocre 18/7 talent was about to go to waste.  The Blazers just need to make one more adjustment, let's finally cut out the fat, KP your time has come, Bill Simmons for GM, then NBA title here we come!

Too true
LmA is the worst second year player in the league. Oh, and by worst I mean third best (behind Roy and Gay)

Oh, and while we are at it...
dump Nate and bring in a real coach like "IT" from NY. Hey then we would really be set. Oh, and we also need to move some of our assistant coaches, lets see...

(Dang it! I just strained my sarcasm muscle! Man that hurts.)

18 Points, 9 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 3 Steals, 2 Blocks and 0 TOs - LMA's Stats Rookie/Sophmore Game

You're right
I left Nate with the team, that won't do, OK, Simmons replaces KP, Isaiah replaces Nate (if we can pry him from New York), if not I'm sure we can find someone, perhaps a high school coach with a lot of Ws.

The best part is
that he made it seem like Memphis was the team that could be losing out on the deal and would need some assurance from extra incentives. Seriously, how is this guy employed by ESPN?

Many young players developing
It takes time to clarify the needs of the team and the evolution of the players that we have. There is no reason to trade until then.
I like Brandon Roy, whatever planet he comes from. (Bill Walton?)

Clearly.....
Lamarcus has peaked at 23 and we need to sell while his stock is high.  Everyone knows 24 is over the hill.  I think Bill Simmons has the inside track.....I think he knows that Oden has been working on his outside shot and he is going to be more of jumpshot/turn-around fadeaway type guy.  You know...finesse.

Agreed, I think this trade is something that Sergio would describe as "caca" in his native tongue.

Sometimes..
I mean most times, and especially right now I wanna punch Bill Simmons in the face.

I wish I could get paid for whatever the hell he does.

No love for Udoka
He's saying the Spurs need to trade for Ross to fill in for Bowen. Has he not watched the Spurs this year? Udoka has been playing great for them. If they eventually dump bowen and have a Ross/Udoka rotation that would be pretty intimidating assuming Ross is as good as Simmons claims (if I've seen him play this year he didn't make a big enough impact for me to remember it).

And trading Shane Battier and a 1st round pick for Artest? Batteir is better than him and you'd give them a draft pick?

Bill Simmons is my favorite sports columnist but some of these trades are dumb. I don't think I need to explain how stupid the Aldridge trade is.

His contention...
..that the addition of Oden next season makes Aldridge totally expendable is idiotic. I'm trying to be nice in calling it idiotic.
