Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

pros and cons

So, Roy ended up playing more minutes in the all star game than we all expected. Is this a good thing, or a bad?

Roy definitely needed some rest, and didn't necessarily get it. Now, the all star game isn't as taxing as a regular season game, but I'm guessing an  entire weekend in New Orleans can be. Especially when he played in two games! This hurts a little, having our number one guy not get the rest everyone else did, when he probably needed it the most.

BUT!

What does the game he had...
MIN     FGM-A     3PM-A     FTM-A     OREB     REB     AST     STL     BLK     TO     PF     PTS
28       8-10        2-3         0-0         1            9         5          1          1        0       2    18
...do for his confidence? Or even the teams confidence? Now, I know Brandon's confidence wasn't exactly lacking, but could a performance like he had elevate it even higher? Is the team sitting at home watching the game and saying, "wow, I knew Brandon was good, but he's one of the best on the court right now."

What do you guys think this performance does for B-roy and the team? positives and negatives

Are you kidding me?
"Is this a good thing, or a bad?" I hope that this is just a rhetorical question. Of course this is good. I can't help but wonder if you are still thinking playoffs. Are you? If it happens, it happens, if not so what? This season is all about player development, right? This experience is a great one for BRoy, he has earned it. I also think that this is great for the team as it further solidifies his position of leadership.

Believe me - Its ALL good.

It is good
He played like the best player in the Western Conference.  I'll take it.

ITS GREAT
It shows the rest of the fans, the refs, the analysts, and the rest of the media how great Brandon is.  We are a small market team and any positive exposure is definitely good.  Not to mention the more familiar the refs are with Brandon, the more calls that will go in his favor.

Respect
  1. Respect from refs.  This is the kind of thing that will have benefits his entire career.
  2. Respect from other teams.  This won't personally benefit Brandon so much.  But this kind of performance has a subtle impact on how teams will plan for the Blazers.  It is going to mean more open looks for other players.
  3. Next year's all-star game.  If it comes down to a choice between Baron and Brandon next year, and their performances are roughly equal, who gets the nod now?  Brandon.  Which means more opportunity to build on #1 & 2.

It's all good.

Fatigue?  These guys are incredibly fit.  The fatigue factor is mostly mental, and this was just fun and games.  The only real fatigue factor is the travel, and that was going to be there whether he played 8 minutes or 28.

Interesting choice to give Brandon the minutes.  It made Paul look good, too -- Brandon was the best sidekick for him.  Fun stuff.

he was awesome
and the sick thing is, was that he really seemed to pass up some opportunities to score and ended up passing to guys that missed shots a few times.  who knows how he would have done if he would have felt more comfortable taking charge of the game? but that's totally understandable from a second year player in his first all-star appearance. not to mention that he's such a good guy that he dosen't have to prove anything to anyone or buff his ego. great performance and i'm so blown away by the minutes he got. truly remarkable.

The problem is that Brandon is one of those
people who make things run so smoothly that you don't notice him. Like mollases in rye bread. Everyone else looks better when he's on the floor and many observers only notice the effect and not the cause. To listen to the commentators it was as if Brandon was an invisable adjunct to the play. They rarely mentioned him unless they had to.
I have to say I love every single one of the Blazers but I want to see Chris Paul in red and black. There seemed to be a real communication between Chris and Brandon on the floor.
Brandon really proved himself tonight and justified being picked over Baron. JMO.

Couldn't agree more
for the longest time I was in the corner that said, "Paul's untouchable, his game doesn't fit with Brandon's more controlled style, etc." But after last night, watching them just feed off each other, makes you wonder what might be. I just don't see NO or whatever they will be in two years not maxing him out. If he can take a couple mill pay cut (yeah, right) then I would love to see him in Portland. Come on Brandon, lobby!

I was one naysayer
I did not think that Roy and Paul could play together.  After watching the Allstar game, I change my mind.  Their chemistry worked well.  It appeared that Paul was just as comfortable with Roy on the court as Roy was with Paul.  I would like to see Paul as a Blazer after all.

I thought about this....
even before All-Star weekend. The rest might of been good, might of really been needed but what do you do? Hopefully Brandon is afforded some rest right now.

Is it a good thing? 100% YES. Of course getting the exposure and the experience is fantastic. Brandon is no longer "All-Star Like" or "Playing at an All-Star Level" he IS an All-Star. For too many years now I've watched the rest of the league with their All-Stars get the calls and the breaks. Now Brandon is likely to get that All-Star player "respect" from the Refs.

I'm hoping Aldridge and Roy sleep in late the next couple of days. I'm also very happy after years of absence that The Blazers finally had an All-Star weekend presence and impact.

When your players get named to the All-Star team you just have to be happy, you can't worry about the fact that it's going to be an active weekend.

I was in the camp that said
"No... don't send brandon to the all star game!  He needs rest!"

I'm an idiot.

I believe the development points have all been covered so I'll simply state the one negative.

I am now drooling LIKE CRAZY for CP and Roy to play together.  I would do anything short of the big three.  They could have ALL the players except for the big three as far as I'm concerned.  I'm sure KP and do some nice draft day magic to fill the gaps.

Lebron will look over here and go... "dang... the only way to a championship is through the blazers.  If you can't beat them... join them."

Seriously... CP... we needs!

"No way. I love this town. We're gonna bring back the glory years. These boys are my boys. This is my team and my town." - Greg Oden when asked about leaving.

cp will cost
us 1 of the big 3...thats for sure.  Is it worth it?  Possibly.

As much as I like Travis....if we could hang onto the big 3 and get CP3, then why would you not want to let Travis go.

I'll add my voice to the Pro-CP crowd.
I think I might even be able to admit at the very darkest parts of the nights in my quietest voice that CP will eventually be better than Sergio.

This season is over...
............. it's all about next season at this point. The Blazers have elected to flush this year. 38 wins.

So -- it's good for Brandon to prove to himself that he can play HIS game with the biggest big dogs. Nothing bad about it.

How great would it have been...
.............. if instead of bricking the windmill jam, Brandon had caught the ball, come down on two feet, watched the defender sail by, and laid it in off the window.

He knows this, too, I reckon, but he had only 0.2 seconds to make the decision, so we must forgive him for guessing wrong.

Took a chance
He was actually quoted as saying that is what he would have done if it was a regular game.  He went for it because it was the All-Star game.  You have to know when to take a chance.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
