Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

On the Evolution of Teams

I was basking in the glow of Roy's all-star performance and it got me thinking about other loyalties I have to the NBA. For example.

  1. Rick Adelman. I still have loyalties to that guy to this very day. I actively cheer for Houston when I see them play only because Rick coaches for them. I did the same thing when he was with Sacramento. I have a lot of loyalty towards that guy and I've followed his teams only because of his time with Portland.
  2. Terry Porter. I really loved this guy. I still remember when he blocked that Jordan jumper from behind in that championship series that ended up coronating Jordan. I followed the Milwaukee Bucks only because he was with that team. I still hope he finds a coaching gig.
  3. Ime Udoka. I'm happy that Ime ended up with the Spurs, although I wish he'd play more. I find myself looking up box scores to see how that dude is doing.
I suppose that the list goes on for many people for many different reasons. I suppose that's what's great about being a good fan of the game. You're aware of the ebb and flow of people and find a reason to pay attention to other teams. (Btw, I get a great sense of schaudenfreude when I see players I don't like do badly... are you listening Bonzi?)

Then it got me thinking about this team. How will I feel?

  1. I'll follow whatever team Demopolous ends up going to. I think he's a great coach.
  2. It seems clear to me that Surge will be with another team. He will probably flourish but I'm willing to concede he's a bad fit for the Blazers. I will feel envy if he makes the all-star game.
  3. Webster and Jack will, I think, be gone soon. I don't know if they've inspired enough loyalty in me to actually follow them but I'll think kind thoughts on them. But I will not feel envy if they make the all-star game... only immense surprise.
One thing that is clear to me after watching the all-star game: our Blazers have a long way to go. Watching Roy play with Paul and Amare really clarified in my mind how much he's been carrying that team. It solidified in my mind how utterly replacable Jack, Webster, Surge, and perhaps even James Jones really are. AFter all, who in the NBA doesn't have guys like this?

Our team is going to change faces... and that's a good thing. We're so close to the team that we can't bear to think of other players playing. But really, we don't miss Ime that much; we don't miss Bonzi or Rasheed at all; Brian Grant's departure didn't end up being that big of a deal; we got over Kersey and Drexler and Porter all leaving the team.

In fact, I find myself hoping that KP does, in fact, pull the trigger in the 11th hour.

Well said...
I've done the same thing for awhile now.  Started with Jim Jackson.  Can't remember what year he played for us (99-00?), but thats when i started really following our players.

Bill Parcells once said
in a conversation with Drew Bledsoe when they were still in NE, "Fans dont love the players, they love the jersey," and while that may not ring as true here as in other locales, I hate to admit it but it is true. Why else would we root for R*der, B*nzi, R*uben, or R*sheed? And like you mentioned we got over seeing Clyde in a Rockets uni and Grant leaving to Miami, still it is difficult.

The question that comes to mind for me is why should KP have to do anything this year. I say wait until darft time to pull the trigger on anything. I do not see us doing anything until then because why shake things up now? It does not make much sense and as we all know KP will be very active in the draft, so why not give him more ammo to work with? About Sergio, I appriciate your willingness to look beyond your fanhood, and I like Sergio too but I also have a hard time seeing how he fits here, but we should keep him and then renounce his rights in 2009-10 and save $1.8mill in salary.

The other thing that sucks was this CP3/Roy talk again. I thought I had gotten over it, but much like seeing an old GF that fire was lit again. DAMN!! I find myself working through the salary scenarios again and again. If we can get to $47 mil CP3 can only resigned for $15-16 mil assuming a $63 mil cap. (Yeah, yeah, I know "We will NEVER get CP3" blah, blah, blah, blah. Cant a guy dream??)

Trading away Grant for Kemp was the beginning
of the end. Portland goes from up by 10 in the 4th of game 7 of the western conference finals to having a mental breakdown and trading away O'Neal for Davis and Grant for Kemp, killing any chemistry the team had. Grant was our soul of the team, he left and team went in to a downward spiral. I missed him

Kemp
I agree about Brian Grant. He was one of my favorite players. Kemp was a has been by then. Also, when Portland was 42-18 in 00-01, they bring in Rod Strickland, and the team inexplicably falls apart.

I liked Adelman as well. He should have some rings on his finger, especially in 02 with Sacramento.

Good thoughts but.....
I object to the individualization of role players without giving due to the teamwork and togetherness these guys have. I found myself wondering if any of the players at NO has it like this and from reading - apparently not. So yes, the guys you name are JAGs but they are also parts of the most amazing pro team I have ever seen. Tread carefully please before you tread on them.

I think I agree, what is a jag.

Maybe...
JAG might be a little uncharitable... but I do believe that very few guys are truly irreplacable.

I'm a big "sum is greater than parts" guy, though, so in principle I think I want to agree with you.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
