Bassy vs Sergio

I am looking at some stats for Bassy and noticed not only how much of a jump hes made this year...but how unbelievable his Ast/TO ratio is for Feb so far.

In the last 5 games hes put up 37 asts and 3 TOs.
His shooting still remains to be atrocious...yet I remember seeing his HS highlights and "movie" saying how good of a shooter/scorer he was.

Bassy is a good example of what a few years of consistent minutes can do for a player.  Granted he's still got a long way to go.

Like Sebastian, Sergio also lacks a jump shot at this point, but he does have excellent court vision.    Sergio is still a youngster and I can picture him working hard until he gets where he wants to be, but after a few years of working hard and having little results I would imagine it begin to tear down a players confidence.

Do you think that Sergio will be a better player than Sebastian in 3 years?  Will Sergio ever be put into a role where he can have a meaningful role by the end of next season?  If traded what could we expect for return for him?

They are only a year apart,
and both have simlar skills.  Both are very quick, not very strong, both can make passes and both have difficulty shooting.  Telfair has had way more experience on the floor in NBA games.  It is very rare for NBA point guards to show what they can do before their mid twenties.  I think in three years these two will be solid NBA players, of similar ability and still will both be young NBA players.

Sergio has a similar assist per minute rate to Telfair but turns the ball over a little more.  I do think consistent minutes help a point guard.  My biggest concern is that Nate won't let Sergio play to his strengths and I would't be surprised to see Sergio traded away and have success in a different system.

Do you think the same happened to Bassy?

i.e. the "Nate doesn't like flashy PGs and hinders their development" theory.

Or do you think Telfair had other issues, not applicable to Sergio, that led to him being shipped out?

good question
Thats hard to answer, bc at the time bassy was already coined as the PG of the future and the brass upstairs wanted to develop him.  Not sure what Nate thought of him.  I would say the trade more had to do with Telfair's character and wanting Roy.

One other thought.

Bassy was Nash's pick--not KPs.

(Jarrett Jack was also reportedly a John Nash choice, although KP was on board with the Blazers by that point).

Sergio, OTOH, is a Kevin Pritchard pick.

That said, I think KP is smart enough to know good (or bad) basketball players when he sees them, and hopefully will judge all players fairly.

I think both are applicable.
Nate likes, and more importantly, trusts a particular sort of point guard.  That type of point guard is tough, takes care of the ball and plays defense.  Guys who are different (TJ Ford, Steve Nash, etc.) are going to have less opportunity.  Nate also really believes in veterans, making it hard for young guards.

However, Telfair had issues both on and off the court that contributed to him laving.

I'd take Sergio over Telfair all day long
Telfiar is averaging 9.6 points on 39% shooting.  That includes an abysmal 25% from 3 point land.  Other than his assist/TO ratio which is pretty good, I don't see all that much to get excited about.  And 6 assists in nearly 30 minutes of play ain't exactly Jason Kidd territory.

He plays for the Timberwolves
I imagine getting 6 assists on the Twolves is the equivalent of getting 20 with the Nets.

Bassy is not a great scorer in this league, but man can that guy pass. BTW it is not like Jason Kidd is a light it up shooter, but Bassy will never be the defender that JKidd is/was.

Sergio's stats
Averaging Sergio out to 32.3 minutes (Telfair's average floor time) gives you 9.1 points and 6.1 assists with similar (slightly worse) shooting percentages--Sergio is currently at 36% FG, including a not-exactly-stellar 27% 3 point rate. And of course neither of them can defend at all. The only difference I can see is Telfair's considerable advantage in A/TO: 3.30 to Sergio's 2.17. And I guess Sergio is at least 3 inches taller, for all the good it seems to be doing him. At this point I consider Bassy to be the better player, though that isn't saying much. Both are young and full of potential, but both are poor to average players at this point in time.

Scorer vs. Shooter
Bassy was a great scorer in high school because he's a great finisher at the basket and is quick as hell getting their. He's not a jump shooter or an outside threat at all. In high school, his points were probably inflated because 6' was big enough for a point guard in that league.
