Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Rockets

Well, this one should be interesting.  At least Brandon is back.  Do you supposed he'll explode for 40 and out-T-Mac T-Mac in his own building?  That would be cool.  Provided McGrady even plays, of course.

Register all of your pre-, in-, and post-game thoughts right here.

Piece of cake
We're ready for these guys, now.

On every road trip, you have a specific allotment of missed shots, turnovers, defensive lapses, and rebounding breakdowns that you have to suffer through.

We've used up our quota of that stuff for this trip already.  So this one will be easy.

I think we should go right at Yao, over and over again.  The worst that can happen is he gets a triple double with 10 blocks to go with his rebounds and points, before they rest him for the last three quarters.  That should make the last three quarters a little easier.

We need this win
We need our bench to play really well.

Martell needs to step up a bit.

Limit the turnovers.

Win the rebound Battle.

Shooters
"How about our outside shooters finally wake up?"

This seems like the biggest of Dave's keys, it really allows the rest of our offense to be the most effective.

Good Thoughts Fellas!
The Rockets are red hot, and there would be no better way for the guys to get back on the winning streak than to beat one of the hottest teams in the NBA.

Here is some good information from http://pregame.com.

Houston has won 7 of the last 8 home meetings with Portland and 4 of the last 5 games between the teams overall. However, the Blazers have covered 3 of the last 4 meetings along with 5 of 7.
Rockets are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 Monday games.
Blazers are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
Blazers are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 Monday games.
The OVER is 8-3 in Portland's last 11 Monday games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Houston's last 8 games vs. Western Conference.

I think Brandon is going to carry this one
I can't imagine he was happy watching how the team played in his absence.

I also think there's motivation because the last Houston game was a real stinker.

Portland 95, Houston 92

I think we will win. I have no solid basketball-related reasons for this opinion. My gut is telling me yes -- but my gut is also very hungry...

Second
I second this thought.  I think the Blazers will have energy, especially Roy (which is contagious for the other guys), and I feel like we're going to take this game.  If there was a Jersey contest tonight, I'd go against conventional wisdom and predict it.

And also, I am hungry too.

Hakeem was my favorite big man
I want the Blazers to hire Hakeem to teach Oden how to change your pivot foot 3 times on a possession and not get called for it.  He was awesome at that.

by Mortimer on Feb 11, 2008 12:05 PM PST reply actions

Mortimer
how to change your pivot foot 3 times on a possession and

Huh??  Did you actually watch Hakeem or are you just reguritating what a lot of ill-informed people have said?  The reason the Dream Shake wasn't a travel is because Hakeem was the best in NBA history at keeping his pivot foot.  I have no idea why people think he traveled often.  On occasion, yes, everyone does.  But on a game to game basis Hakeem traveled very infrequently.  He had phenomenal footwork in the post, and it was completely within the rules, they did not bend them for the Dream Shake.  Review some film.  I know it was a joke, but it's a tired one as a Rockets fan.

I'll be at the game tonight though, I'm looking forward to a good one.  Hopefully with a Rockets win of course.

by UofTOrange on Feb 11, 2008 12:27 PM PST reply actions

Hakeem is one of the greatest
Ever.  He was awesome and did have great footwork and the best hands at his position.  But I do remember him changing his pivot foot.  Obviously, changing 3 times is a joke.  Wade changes his pivot foot all the time.  Kobe does too.  It's a sly move many stars make and Hakeem incorporated it into his variety of post moves.  It's not a bad thing, it's a smart thing.

I'm not bagging on one of the best centers to ever play.  He had great foot work.  For how great everyone agrees the Dream was, I think he's still underrated.

Call me crazy, and while I don't think this undermines The Dream at all, saying he didn't change his pivot foot at times is like saying Jordan didn't push off or palm the ball every play.  I really do want Oden to do things the Hakeem way, because I think that'll help make him one of the best ever.

Ok, I got un-lazy for a minute and just watched a 10 minute Hakeem highlite reel on You-Tube.  I only noticed once travel right under the basket off of a rebound.  That happens to everyone.  So perhaps my memory has been infested by the common joke about Hakeem's pivot, and I am wrong.  I don't mind that.

I want Oden to get that spin move and the numerous ball fakes.  You knew what Hakeem was gonna do, he knew what he was gonna do, and there was no way to stop it.  He had spun on his defender and dunked it before his guy even realized Hakeem had the ball.  The only way he'd be a better player is if he was a Blazer.  THEN he'd be THE best of all time!

So. With Roy back, what's the starting line-up?
Before the family emergency, the Pistons game was going to have that Blake/JJ/Roy backcourt again.
Now that Roy's back, does that still hold? Will that line-up be used for this game?
Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

by QualityPie on Feb 11, 2008 3:24 PM PST reply actions

Cold Shower
There's no pleasant way to say this - the line is 8 on this game and the people who set it are probably right.  The Blazers are not so hot on the road lately, and haven't beaten a team over .500 since January 9.  That's right, it's been 33 days since they beat Golden State in Oakland, and since then they've been unable to beat any decent team on the road or at home.  They are 0-8 against decent competition in that time.

They haven't beaten a team with a winning record on the road since the Denver game on 12/16.  Almost two months ago - 1/3 of the NBA season!

This just hasn't been the team that went on that 13 game winning streak for a while now.  Hopefully we'll see that team again before the season ends, starting with tonight, but there aren't any signs pointing that way.

Still early
If we don't pick it up a bit and come out strong after the all star break, then yeah, we probably won't get in the playoffs even if we win 45 games.  Still, a very very successful season and we'll be adding a lottery pick AND ODEN to a 40+ win team.  That isn't fair!

Unfortunately for Golden State fans, they probably won't make it either.  I hope we make it and then the Warriors, but Utah and Houston are playing pretty good now and they're in the way like dumb jerks.

Every game is important, but there isn't ONE GAME that will decide our fate for the playoffs yet.  We're right in it even if we lose the next two, but really really gotta come out strong after the break because April is a toughie.

One game at a time...

I personally prefer the Shaq/KG style of really tough and aggressive post play. Yao is sorta like a bigger version of Nowitsky, without the shooting range.

Blazers can NOT play slow with no low post offense and no penetration. Just isn't gonna be happening for them that way. They've got the offensive players for a running team and then and go play a Zach Randolph back-em-in pace.

Good luck with that.

Those that question the coach only see what they want to see.

Nothing happens inside a vacuum, but somehow when a player does one good thing well, and the team as a whole doesn't do that said thing well, it will be miraculously fixed by inserting said player.

Problem is, that player does a lot of other things badly.

by damir on Feb 11, 2008 7:21 PM PST up reply actions

Actually...
......... you may not have noticed a 7'6" Chinese man at the Center position, and only 1 Blazer competent to guard him.

And only 1 Blazer player who would pass Low Post Rebounding 101 at any college anywhere.

Sorta like having a lot of money when you die... If you lose with your one low post player sitting on the bench with 2 more fouls to burn, you can't take it with you into the abyss that will be the second half of this season...

this season is all about developing!!! not making the playoffs, that 13 game winning streak just made people think we could get in the playoffs but the reality is that were a really young team and developing on agood level, so dont expect playoffs and dont say stick a fork in the season because this season all about players gettin better for next season when we can acually make a run for the playoffs with Oden and hopefully our man in spain rudy.

We will never know until either Sergio or Jack gets a chance to contemplate their performance thus far this season. Unless Green is seriously phoning in practices he deserves a shot. Sergio gots tons of PT last year. Why not give the guy a shot?

To be fair
the majority of my ire is directed at Jack. Although Jack can finish at the rim and seems to lack that "fear of taking it to the rack" gene that impairs everyone else but Roy. However, Sergio has played some decent games this year with only one or two real bright spots. So the question begs. Is it a Nate based decision like his strange love of Jack that keeps Green on the bench or is it that Green just sucks? He looked pretty good in garbage time the other night and something tells me he isn't gonna beat Jack's TO record.

He shot over 50% from the field....
He held T Mac to 12 points off 6/15 shooting...
and he did a damn fine job against Carmelo not too long ago.

I was trying to fix my car...
while this game was being perpetrated. this team has not only hit the wall, they hit it so hard that it fell over on top of them, and now they need someone to dig them out.

I agree that it is time to stop thinking about the playoffs, and focus on player development - which I think that I read somewhere that was what this season was supposed to be all about in the first place. Play the the rookies dang it!

No, Timbo wanted playoffs...
.................................. THIS year.

Past tense. (R.I.P. City)

We will be having the same tiff 12 months hence: I'll be shrieking because KP isn't making the necessary moves to get into the playoffs in 2008-09, while the usual suspects, worshippers of team colors rather than great (or even competent) basketball, will assure me that it's all about player development anyway and the Blazers are still younger than the average age in the NBA (25 instead of 26!) and besides, they have super duper team chemistry and it really doesn't matter that we're not going to make the playoffs again because Oden is just a rookie and next year everybody will be a year older (and gosh, besides, at least we're not as bad as the Sonics!).

And so on and so on, year after year, until people finally figure out they are chasing a mirage -- that the NBA is also moving forward, that the Blazers are not moving forward as fast as the elite teams because of the GM's refusal to adapt to needs in-season, instead to over-rely on fancy dan draft day hi-jinks to build a perpetual "team of the future."

There's always "next year," you see -- the future is always sunny and bright.

Just you wait and see -- I'm calling my shot, clip and save.
