New SB Nation platform coming soon

Just a couple of hours ago SB Nation launched it's new layout/platform for it's sports blogs. Athleticsnation was the first to see this update. You can have a look for yourself over at http://athleticsnation.com

Some new things that jump out at me is the removal of "Diary's" and the addiction of "FanPosts". The same thing, just don't have to use the girly diary word now.

And comments in game threads, as well as any other thread or post update automatically. No more have to click the refresh button to see what everyone has said.

There's many other things in the new update, but instead of listing them all right here I'll let you see them for yourself.

Do you want this new update on BE?

Mortimer would be screwed
I read a post where he used the b-word and they have a flagging feature.  He would probably make it a goal to get flagged.  I could see him bragging about his flagging time and padding his stats.

Hey now
I think it's a great idea. Look at the hotstuff/Sergio deal that went down earlier. Instead of every single person posting about how annoying the diary was, we could have just flagged it.

Of course I want it..
Hey, this is pretty exciting.  I'm also hoping for an aesthetic improvement to this blog site.  The current one is awfully boring.

Looks like a lot of good stuff there.

sigh
They went from ugly site design to cookie-cutter Wordpress crap.

True story
The new design looks horrible. I like this simplified design, and I like the fact that tons of diaries can fit on the sidebar, and I also like the fact that we don't have to put up ridiculous pictures, or icons of any kinds. I mean I think that this detracts from the focus of basketball, and instead makes it a "cute" site. Dave is there any way we could keep this old style?

Fixed Width and AJAX-y comments
are enough for me to say woohoo! both site aren't as visually pleasing as i'd like, so that's a wash. bring it on!

fixed width?
I don't know about the fixed width... I like being able to maximize the window and read without scrolling down.

I'm sure I'll get used to it.

ignore feature
is there an ignore feature in the update?  that'd probably be the most useful alongside the autorefresh.

by Philthyanimal on Feb 12, 2008 2:03 AM PST reply actions

Nope
There probably never will be.  The prevailing philosophy is that it fractures conversation.  We can all get mad at someone but at least then everybody knows who and what we're getting mad at and perhaps that will lead to the problem changing (or getting banned).  With "ignore" only half of us get mad and the other half don't know what's going on and you only read parts of conversations which don't make sense.

Interesting
Thanks, Devyn!

They did say it was beta so there will probably be more changes, but I have to say I like most of what I read about.  I hope I'm not one that has to change my username, but if it happens, it happens.  Wonder if "Dave" will have to change his.

Have we been able to use tags all along?  That's what it sounded like.  I do like both tagging and flagging, though I'm not sure I like opposing fans coming over here because their team was mentioned.  It could get nasty - but at least Dave can ban the most obnoxious.  Hope this won't create more work for him.

Are we going to lose space for FanPosts?  I mean the listing of them?  I'd rather see the most recently commented on rather than the "most popular" - unless those drop off after a certain time without new comments.

Being able to post links in a certain place sounds awesome - I've always disliked creating a diary just to post one link.

I doubt you have to worry
about losing your handle Jorga.  Not only is the name unique but you've been using it for a long time.  I know you were with Blazer Thoughts, although I doubt that time will factor in.  I'm wondering if you were on Blazer's Edge when Casey was running it or did you only jump aboard when Dave took it over as I did?

by TwoDeep on Feb 12, 2008 8:48 AM PST reply actions

I haven't been registered on SBN long
only since Dave took over.  I looked at BE now & then, but never felt comfortable there - too much ranting & name calling.  When I found Blazer Thoughts I knew I'd found a home and I am so glad Dave brought that same philosophy with him.

I've used "jorga" as an online name for over ten years, but have occasionally found it already in use.  It's part of me now and I hate thinking someone else is using "my name" :-)

Meh
  1. When is this baby rolling out? I hope it's not for a while. Right now it's too buggy for me to check out the new features.  GPF city.  (I've been a good little soldier and reported the error messages.)

  2. I expected it to be a bit sluggish, but jeepers, pages with lots of comments take forever to load.

  3. The new format for comments is much more difficult to read, let alone scan quickly. It may be boring, but give me a bunch of white space (vs gray boxes) and big clear indents.  Visually, the avatars are downright irritating  -- will we have an option to turn them off?

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
