Rudy will stay in Europe!

Can it be true? Have we not all eagerly awaited his PTB appearance with almost as much anticipation as the Big Fella's?

Money Quote:

"There are always rumors about if I will be in the NBA," he said. "Now I wear this jersey, I have won the Copa del Rey and I have two more seasons remaining.

"Right now, I'm only thinking about this contract that I have."

What????????????
Is this for real???

We need Rudy, desparately.

Liberal use of salt required
Doesn't seem like too long ago we heard that he & Sergio were in almost daily communication with Rudy constantly asking about Portland.

He's already learned "right speak" - talk about the present, not the future.  By "thinking about the contract" he could be thinking "how much will it take to buy me out? will they do it?"

I know those are optimistic words from my cynical self, but my cynicism is directed at sports.yahoo.  Weren't they involved in that Kidd trade rumor?

I have no idea,
BUT, this line was in the article about the contract:

Rudy "signed a new contract with the Catalan outfit last July through the 2010-11 season"

Come on you guys....
It's amazing how gullible people can be on this site.  Don't believe everything you read or everything someone says.  Rudy is coming over next year, he said it before, the blazers have said it, its gonna happen.  Rudy is just saying the right things because he is still in europe.  Its like when a player here in america ask for a trade but publicly he says he wants to stay, or that he's only worrying about his current team.  It's nothing more then that, Rudy will be here next year.

by ggassen85 on Feb 11, 2008 8:28 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Really?
"It's nothing more then that, Rudy will be here next year"

What are you willing to give up for him???

by hotstuffdb22 on Feb 11, 2008 8:34 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

What CAN you give up?
In the Quick article you cited above, Jason drops this bomb:

"The Blazers can only pay him about $1 million next season, far less than what European teams figure to offer him."

So it may not be Blazers willing, it may be how much scratch is Rudy willing to give up...

What?
What do you mean what I'm a willing to give up for him?  The blazers dont have to give up anything, just make room on the roster, i dont get ur question.

by ggassen85 on Feb 11, 2008 8:37 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think this guy
wants more than a roster spot and $1 million dollars... why would you go from a star in Europe to uncertainty in the NBA (no previous NBA experience) and a pay-cut?

(Isn't the Euro killing the dollar??)

by hotstuffdb22 on Feb 11, 2008 8:43 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

come on...
You realy think a 22 year old kid gives a damn about how weak the dollar is in comparison to the euro.  I have read before that he dosen't care about that stuff he wants to compete in the best league against the best competition, and thats in the NBA.  He and Sergio are best friends and from what i hear he has consitently told Sergio that he will be in the NBA next year.

by ggassen85 on Feb 11, 2008 8:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
at least this is the info. J. Quick gives.  But at the same time, I think he has to have a seed of uncertainty in his mind.  Otherwise, why doesn't he just say, "watch me in Portland."

IF he was sold out for playing in Portland, he wouldn't care about contracts and making statements as quoted in the above article.  And you would be 100% correct.  Alternatively, I think what we observe here is a guy who is sort've unsure or skeptical about where he'll be living this upcoming Fall.  Or perhaps, a third option, he's simply enjoying the recent attention and doesn't know how to answer the questions.

by hotstuffdb22 on Feb 11, 2008 8:53 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I dont...
agree completely with that, the reason he dosen't come out and say he is 100% going to Portland is that he dosen't what to be disrespectful to the organization that he is currently playing for.  He probably also wants to make his remaining time there as peaceful as possible.  I pretty sure he is looking forward to playing in the NBA.

Juan Carlos Navarro did it this year
Some guys want to test themselves against the best players and have so much self-confidence they are not afraid of the risk nor are worried about money. Juan Carlos Navarro have proved to be one of that kind. And I think Rudy will do the same. He could have signed this year for Axa Barcelona for a lot of money and didn´t.

No, read the article closely
The statement is on the Spanish league's website. I'd even bet that this ticker story is actually a press release from the league itself.

And twice Rudy says, "Right now". That in itself belies what the headline suggests.

by grimc on Feb 11, 2008 8:33 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Incorrect translation
Rudy didn´t talk about "two years more" but two "titles more he want to fight for" until he decides to go or not to go to NBA this year. He´s talking about Regular League and Uleb Cup, the other two competitions in wich his team participates. Don´t worry yet.

Rudy signed his new contract after being drafted..
I read that his contract makes it VERY easy for him to come to the nba at any point after this season.  I have heard it is Rudy's dream to be in the nba.  In the long run, if Rudy is out for money, he should come to the nba anyway as a role players salary is like a superstars over in europe.  He just has to get through the rookie contract and then he can start making real money, especially if he is any good...

His words in Spanish, so you may translate
"Ahora mismo tengo contrato con el DKV Joventut y sólo pienso en eso. Siempre se rumorea si estaré en la NBA. Ahora llevo esta camiseta, he logrado la Copa y me quedan dos campeonatos más. Ahora mismo sólo pienso en este contrato que tengo".

Full Interview:

Rudy Fernandez: "We have all fought"

After winning the title of champion of the Copa del Rey and gain recognition as "MVP, Player with more Barclaycard credit" of the tournament, Rudy Fernandez has stressed that while it was nice getting this award, "I think we have all struggled through and So we were able to win. "

The game, the SG said, "has been a very competitive final. In the first half, the TAU has posted a very physical game. In the second part, we have improved the defence, we pressed and run and we managed to be the team of the first two games. "

Although it had already achieved the MVP in the edition in Seville/2004, Rudy has stated that "2004 lags far behind. Having lost, I received this trophy. I prefer to win the Cup, but if he had won the MVP any colleague of mine would have been just as successful or more."

The SG Balearic has acknowledged that "always costs play in Vitoria, because the fans live much basketball. I think that had never won here against TAU, and certainly has been a good first time. The fans of TAU  and I have had some differences, but I know that they are between the best fans in ACB."

Rudy Fernandez has not wanted to comment on whether entering next season in the NBA. "Right now I have a contract with DKV Joventut and just think about it. Always rumoured if I will be in the NBA. Now I carry this shirt, I have achieved King´s Cup and I have two championships to play. Right now I think only in this contract that I have."

bien hecho
mi bilingue amigo!  I was quite perturbed when I read the yahoo press release -- the possibility of an incorrect translation didn't even cross my mind. I agree with Bruno that that's a pretty egregious error to make and changes entirely what he's saying.  But the actual text just makes it sound like he's being political, which I would actually consider a positive sign of the maturity of a 22-year-old.

Basically, that sounds exactly like how college football players talk after the regular season but before the bowl games when the media asks them if they're going pro or not. "There are a lot of rumors about me going pro but right now all I'm thinking about is helping the University of XYZ win our bowl game against Archrival State", that kind of thing. I'm not worried.

It's amazing
I don't even speak Spanish and I could understand what Rudy meant with that.

How can newspapers not find real translators.

Then again, I have the unfair advantage of speaking French and Italian.

by robrun2 on Feb 11, 2008 11:07 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You have the unfair advantage
over newspaper translators that you speak 2 languages other than what they are speaking? Yeah, it gives you much more background, but I think your original point still holds as mcuh water with or without that inclusion.

Translation looks good
I speak read and write fluent spanish, and i may be confused by this posting, but if that is the translation given by Yahoo, then it is completely sound.  It's basically a direct translation, word for word.  There are a couple different variations the translator can pursue to make it flow better, but word for word is likely safest.

We can be very nit picky, but the translation in no way changes the contents of the actual quote.

by fysho31 on Feb 12, 2008 11:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

What is wrong
is to transtale or understand "two seasons" when Rudy talks about "two championships", because he´s talking about this season´s Uleb Cup and Regular League, "two championships". Been Spanish, even if I live half of my life in Oxford, that was very clear for me. In Spain nobody get confused. Everybody knows Rudy want to go to NBA. The fans of Rudy cried "Rudy quedate".

Rudy also said hours after:

"A festival like this does not go far enough. We can achieve two more cups, ULEB and ACB. We will do for you. Together we can".

Sweet video.
Rudy wears a cape at the end. Coincidence? I think not ...

by bfan on Feb 11, 2008 10:46 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

HE WON'T COME
I hate to say it, but why will he come?
To play 15 minutes behind Roy? Nate' son?
Also, he is going to get offerend around 3.5 million per season in Europe being a super star. Here he will make $850,000 next year and he will have to pay his team $500,000 of that money. So you tell me, $350,000 or $3,500,000, I think that extra $0 makes a huge difference

And again, if you guys have seen this guy, he loves running, kind of like Serg.
Unless Brandon decides he can be good without the ball, and he could, this team is not for Rudy and he knows it

Belive me!

Storm Cloud...
Local media and/or The Blazers need to follow up on this news. That's too bad, up to now all I had heard was that he WANTED to come to the N.B.A. and would be coming.

I don't like this on a lot of levels. Sure sounds like he is more than willing to pass on the N.B.A. at least for now, and being enticed by the money Europe can offer.

Just because we drafted him doesn't mean we can make him come, the most disappointing aspect seems to be that he sounds like he doesn't particularly want to come over. Which is in conflict to quotes about him earlier. At this point I guess as Blazer fans we just need more confirmation as to what the situation really is, but I certainly don't like the Yahoo quotes.

"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"

Geez people ...
Can someone please tell me where in that article he actually SAYS "My name is Rudy Fernandez and I am not going to play for the Portland Trailblazers next year"?

Fact: He never says this. I think this is much ado about nothing. He's playing nice with his teammates, much akin to someone like OJ Mayo saying "I'm not thinking about the NBA. I'm focussed on winning a national title." Yeah right ...

by bfan on Feb 11, 2008 10:49 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Thanks Almart
one of our Blazer edge scouts identified that yahoo don't know Jack.

Appreciated.

Rudy has also stated that he's very interested in the NBA.  It only pays a little now, but can pay a lot more in the future if Rudy really is good.

If we have room and want him, he'll be here.

"No way. I love this town. We're gonna bring back the glory years. These boys are my boys. This is my team and my town." - Greg Oden when asked about leaving.
