Gameday Open Thread: Knicks vs. Blazers

Here it is...the return of Zach.  And he brought some friends.

How do you feel about all of this?  I have to admit I want this win a little more than usual.  It's not as much anti-Zach (though it is a little) as wanting a clean, definite, and demonstrably successful break from the old era.  That's already happened, of course, but this would be nice symbolism.  Everybody needs a little symbolism.

I want the Blazers to be at their unselfish-passingest-sweet stroking best tonight.  I want their defense to make New York bog down in a post-heavy quagmire.  Most of all I want to see every Blazer with a smile on their face as they walk away from this one.

As always, register your pre-, in-, and post-game thoughts here.

Anyone else think it's ironic that Roy is named an all-star on the day before Zach comes back to town when Zach wanted to be an all-star all those years and couldn't make it?

--Dave (blazersub@yahoo.com)

P.S. For out-of-towners don't forget that this is the late game on ESPN. It's a 7:30 Pacific start.

P.P.S. The Jersey Contest form for this game is here.

P.P.P.S. Be forewarned that I may have to work very late tomorrow night and if so I almost certainly won't have a recap up until Saturday.

P.P.P.P.S. Don't forget to check out the Sports Saturday Show on 1080 The Fan at 10:10 on Saturday morning. That's the regular slot now for your fix of Dave radio time.

P.P.P.P.P.S Also don't forget to check out our Knicks blog PostingandToasting. I don't imagine New York fans will be all that pleased with my game preview but it's from someone who has been there with my own team and sometimes harsh is accurate. It'll be an interesting game nevertheless. Why do I feel like the Knicks are going to come out fired up?

Taurean Time
  1. I want to see Green and Raef play the entire fourth quarter.

  2. I want to see LMA get a point a minute against Zach's "defense" -- without us having to run any particular plays for him.

  3. I want Channing to get 20-10, so Isiah can see how bad it is to trade away a 20-10 guy.

  4. I want JJ3 to go 5-5 on three pointers, so Isiah can see how important it is to think about trade exceptions when making deals.

  5. I want Zach to score 30 by making 12 of his 40 shots.  I want 7 of his misses to be 3 blocked shots by Pryz, 3 by LMA, and one by Sergio.  I want 18 of his points to come after the midway point of the third quarter, when we are already up by 30.

  6. I want to hear the chalupa chant in the third quarter.

  7. I want Isiah to instruct his team to hurt someone and start a fight, only to be overheard by the refs and get ejected.  I want the word to get out to the fans as to why he was ejected, and to hear the "Fire Isiah" chant in the Rose Garden for the last half of the fourth quarter.  I want to see the Knicks bench players on their feet leading the chant.

I'm with you
I didn't see vindictiveness in your post, I just saw someone finding a funny way to win (though I didn't see "win" in your post, but I'm assuming.)

I do hope the fans are kind to Zach.  I want applause, not boos.  No hard feelings, just glad you're gone.

BTW, just how many points do you figure the Blazers will get in your scenario?

"jksnake99's advice : NEVER give up on a Brandon Roy led team." -- posted at halftime...

No vindictiveness at all
Except possibly towards Isiah.  He became a championship on a team that played dirty, and apparently coaches dirty, too.  To say nothing of his behavior towards employees.  I'd like to see him gone -- though if his boss isn't any better, he probably won't be replaced by anyone any better, either.

I hope Zach gets a lot more applause than boos.  All other things aside, he worked hard here.  If I could be there, I'd applaud him.  I expect the players to do so -- and then go destroy him and his team on the floor.

Points
This requires a separate answer.

I think it will be in the 130 range, but I'd like to see 140.  It would be a shame to let them break 80.  Ideally, 140-70 would double them, which can't have happened too often in the NBA, but this does seem an opportune time, don't you think?

I'm sure everyone understands that my motives are purely altruistic.  Their starters are tired in the middle of a long road trip, and need rest.

Yeah, that's it.  Rest for their starters.

Sometimes I amaze myself with how nice I am.

I just want a win.
I couldn't care less about winning this because we are playing against Randolph or as some sign of our break from the past or to show up Isiah Thomas.  At the end of the night the only thing that counts is whether the game gets registered in the victory or loss column.

Frankly, I'm a bit worried about this game.  Perhaps I shouldn't be, but Randoplh and Curry are two guys who could go off on Portland.  I can see Randolph abusing Aldridge and Frye on the offensive end.  And if LaMarcus continues to shoot like he has the last few games, he's not making it up on the other end.

We should win.  I think we will.  But I don't like this nasty little seed of worry that's crept into my brain.

I'd like to see some class
from the Portland fans and give Zach a warm welcome.  Then I'd like to see a win, but like with Tim56, it isn't at all about wanting to win just to beat Zach's team. Conversely, I have some emphathy for him ... I know he'd much rather still be with the Blazers if the choice had been his.

really, no matter how the Portland fans react, it can't be as bad as the reception the Knicks get at MSG, right?

i'd love to see the Knicks and Blazers both bringing their A-games. this could be a great game if both teams come at it hard. and, of course, i want to see Joel Przybilla blocking Z-Bo all night long!

I am going to miss this one as Rod Benson is in Albuquerque tonight so I am going to watch some Dleague basketball. If you want me to yell something besides "Boom Thou", "Boom Thou Dos", or "In there like swim wear" you will have to let me know.

by jonestr on Feb 1, 2008 10:10 AM PST reply actions

we need a confidence win
I'm a little nervous about this game. The Knicks don't look as bad as their dysfunctional reputation would make you think. I saw part of their game against Detroit(?) and thought they looked pretty good. Good inside game, strong rebounding. Sometimes when you have this sort of "symbolic game" the team focusses more on the symbolism (beating former team/player/coach) than playing smart basketball. Fortunately most of our current Blazers were in Junior High School during the heyday of the Jail Blazers.

by blazernerd on Feb 1, 2008 10:40 AM PST reply actions

This one scares me.
There. I said it. I'm not being rational, but I'm worried about this one. Lately the Blazers have had stretches where they've been flat, and Z-Bo has a big fat axe to grind.

I also think we're likely to hear more "Thanks Isiah" chants than "Fire Isiah."

Checkout Isiah's bio
on knicks.com

"Thomas' patience and ability to stick to his long-term plan, rebuilding the organization through a balance of youth, athleticism and experience, have re-energized the franchise (every player on the Knicks' roster has been acquired during Thomas' regime). Taking on the added role of head coach, he brings a singular philosophy - both short- and long-term - for returning the Knicks to elite status."

I want to thank Isiah
for being the lightning rod around the league and thus clearing the air of the old Blazer image for the new one to emerge so strong.

by lee3022 on Feb 1, 2008 7:55 PM PST up reply actions

The thing I dislike most about Blazer fans
is their tendency to a vindictive, aggressive hate towards a player and the corresponding inability to forgive, and care about these people.  Yes, people.

I personally wish Zach Randolph, and every single one of you the best in life, and hope that things work out for him, and you.

by EnglandDan on Feb 1, 2008 1:33 PM PST reply actions

What are you talking about?
There hasn't been any hatred or vindictiveness towards Randolph and the attributes you attach to Blazer fans could be said about any other teams fans.

by jayseyfield on Feb 1, 2008 1:42 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree.
But I think it pointless to argue.

by EnglandDan on Feb 1, 2008 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

I just want clarification
If you don't want to argue that's fine but if you're going to make such a statement like that it'd be nice if you backed it up with some specific examples so we can see where you were coming from.

by jayseyfield on Feb 1, 2008 2:41 PM PST up reply actions

Well Rasheed Wallace is an excellent example,
the best player on a great team ran out for not being better.  Zach Randolph and Darius Miles have been treated with consistent abuse.  Derek Anderson was another.  Damon Stoudemire was another.

These were all players who weren't perfect, have made some mistakes, but nothing even remotely in proportion to the abuse they have taken.  I've never seen the like while living in England and supporting Liverpool, while I lived in Michigan with the Lions, Pistons and Red Wings.

by EnglandDan on Feb 1, 2008 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

Those players
brought the abuse on their own heads. Now, I'm not saying it's right to hate them--we all make mistakes. But being an embarrassment to the city will not earn you much love.

Rasheed "The Weed" Wallace - constantly complaining to the officials, smoking pot, etc. No love lost there.

Zach "Strip Club" Randolph - sure, strip clubs are not illegal, but they're hardly the picture of family values.

Darius "I like to call my coach the N-word" Miles - Sorry, but his lack of interest on defense and immaturity gave him that label, nothing else.

Derek "Constantly injured" Anderson - okay, you may have a point here, but not all fans hated him.

Damon "Tin Foil" Stoudemire - do we even need to talk about this guy? A volume shooter who was a druggy. 'nuf said.

Sorry, ED, I gotta disagree with you. Blazer fans love players who are good citizens, who try hard on both ends of the court, and who have a winning mentality.

The good thing about Jack inbounding is that he's already standing out of bounds. - Fizbin

by jamon51 on Feb 1, 2008 4:12 PM PST up reply actions

Not to mention...
Bonzi "Flips off the fans" Wells.
Qyntel "dog fighter" Woods.

We boo the players who made it impossible for us to root for them while they played here. Constantly smoking weed, getting arrested, going to strip clubs while you're supposed to be on bereavement leave, acting like a jerk to kids wanting autographs and OVERALL NOT GIVING A DAMN ABOUT THE FANS WHO LOOK UP TO YOU...

... I think that gives us every reason to hold a grudge or two.

Cut, print, argument done. Take your silly statement back to England.

right
I understand people who dislike Sheed a little, since he clearly didn't want to be here near the end of his tenure. But there's a substantial number of PTB fans who just despise him. They hate him more than Bonzi! That's just crazy, to me.

But then again, your signature reminded me of my irrational hatred for Jeff McInnis. Sometimes we just get angry, man.

by abdelnaby on Feb 1, 2008 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

Regardless of the opinion
Not many people who smoke are on a national stage. If the guy did it in his own home and the NBA didn't have drug tests that's one thing. Cruising down 1-5 at 90 in a yellow hummer smoking a joint and consequently bringing embarrassment to the reputation of a city in the national media is another.

Okay, I'm gonna prattle...
....don't kill me, Tom.

The Blazers' 2nd team has been sucking it up. When the streak was on, the white unit was slaying. Now they can't buy a bucket.

As soon as LMA and Joel come out of the game, things go downhill.

The "small ball team" is where we went bad v. Cleveland (were up 10 then lost) and tonight as soon as Nate went small, things went down the toilet.

The Blazers have NO drives to the hoop. They have NO inside attack. This is a bunch of jumpshooters with no confidence in their jumpshots.

Walton: "The Portland Trail Blazers in this 6 game homestand have BECOME the New York Knicks."

Nah no problem
Roy is hurt and scared to take a shot.  And all the players are feeding of him and they're scared to shoot.  Seems like there is always one extra unneeded pass.  And they are being "out hustled."  I hate that term.

How many rebounds got ripped away from him by Lee and Balkman.

Also, when was the last time Jack or Sergio hit a shot?

The Blazers are standing around
it seems waiting for Brandon Roy, All Star, to take over the game and win it for them like they were used to Randolph doing last year.

They have settled for outside shots even when those shots are not falling.

The hustle and hard work seem to be missing, especially on rebounds.

We are still a very young team and Nate has to take control of this youth and pump some adrenalin into them.

I'm officially writing us off for the playoffs, which is fine- I didn't expect us to be in.

The west is just too strong and the white unit (and Webster) are just too inconsistent.

If we are a playoff contender, we can't lose this type of game.

Here's the real core, for the record:

Roy, LMA, Oden, Outlaw, Blake.

And they should keep Pryz and probably give Martell some more time also (although not necessarily as a starter).

Outside of that: time to wheel and deal. Need to get stronger down low.

Blake is far and away the most consistent guard in addition to Roy. Not even close.

Jack doesn't look quite so bad tonight. His slump might be starting to come to a close.

Nate is not playing Sergio tonight, and that's fine with me. I wonder if Sergio's increased time has lead to Jack's deteriorating play. I would trade Sergio. To the Hawks. For My Guy.

Blazers need to keep LMA actively involved in the offense.

I don't know if the Blazers are going to come back tonight. They need to get Trout driving the lane and ride Blake's 3 pointers and Brandon needs to show up also. That's a lot of "ifs."

Not too many commercials
I don't know what it's like for y'all back in the Rose City, but for those of us watching ESPN, it's actually great coverage. Is it just me, or is ESPN being pretty good about not cutting away to commercial on every timeout? It seems like they've giving us images and commentary during most time outs during overtime. It's pretty sweet.

by GrewUpWithDrexler on Feb 1, 2008 10:31 PM PST reply actions

I'm Glad
The Blazers proved you 25% wrong.

by Dheepan on Feb 1, 2008 10:31 PM PST reply actions

Why no commercials?
It's weird, isn't it, that they don't put commercials in during overtime? I mean, you've got to figure everyone that's watching at that point -- 1:34 am on the East Coast, 10:34 in the West -- nobody's going to leave for the commercials. Why not milk the profits? You should even be able to sell the time for a premium: ads to air only in overtime. No?

I hate when teams give up the driving layup that only takes 2 seconds off the clock.

11 thoughts on the game and the Blazers
  1. The Knicks are a better team without Eddy Curry
  2. David Lee, Renaldo Balkman and Nate Robinson play their butts off. Either Balkman or Lee could really help the Blazers.
  3. When James Jones isn't hitting, the White Unit isn't the same.
  4. Greg Oden can help this team dramatically without scoring a point.
  5. Allstar Brandon Roy still can't get a call.  Still, triple double with a band hand? Wow.
  6. Aldridge played well (team high +29 for the game) but needed to go harder at ZBo and the team needed to get him the ball more.
  7. Blake kept us in it.
  8. Jack made big plays late.
  9. Super Trout!
  10. Denver's up next- maybe playing a division rival will get us to play harder.
  11. This looks like a .500 team. HOWEVER, if they go .500 from here on out and finish 8 games over .500 the season would be a rousing success whether or not they make the playoffs.

by jksnake99 on Feb 1, 2008 10:47 PM PST reply actions

Lee and Balkman were rebounders
and that makes their game. Neither can guard a big forward like LMA and neither can guard the quicker small forwards. Whyneither is normally a starter on a 14-32 team.

by lee3022 on Feb 1, 2008 10:50 PM PST reply actions

Lee should start.
I have no doubt Lee would be a great backup 4 on a good team.

by jksnake99 on Feb 1, 2008 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah
If he developed a mid range J, he would be killer. His defense wasn't all too great however, but can you really complain about 14 and 14?

by Dheepan on Feb 1, 2008 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

I still believe we made him look good
Trout is better both offensively and defensively if he wants to be.

by lee3022 on Feb 2, 2008 12:05 AM PST up reply actions

For the even 700,
Just wanted to point out some interesting stats,

Jamal Crawford
51 minutes
13pts 4ast 1 stl
6-27 shooting, 1-11 from 3pt.

Blazers won fast breaks 11-6.

James Jones 0-5, 0-4 from 3pt.

Trout was actually 1-5 in the 4th.

by Dheepan on Feb 1, 2008 11:20 PM PST reply actions

and to ruin the perfect 700...
Crawford won this game for the Blazers.  If they'd done even a mediocre job rebounding his bricks, they'd have won by double digits.  I guess Balkman and Lee have seen enough wild Crawford shots to know where they are going to end up.

by jksnake99 on Feb 1, 2008 11:23 PM PST up reply actions

no taurean time
We were damn lucky to escape with a victory tonight. I am really disappointed in the Blazers level of effort lately. Let's face it: We played abysmally for 80% of this game. We're just lucky the Knicks are such a slipshod unit. I mean, even with very skilled hustle guys like Lee and Balkman the Knicks are just plain slipshod. A fish rots from the head down. Looked to me like the fish head was in denial, pacing around with his "I'm in control and I'm disappointed with the effort being put forth by my team" attitude. I wonder when the Knicks owner will finally lop off that rotting head.
Nature bats last.

by fisheyes on Feb 1, 2008 11:35 PM PST reply actions

Were you watching the same game I was?
I was fine with the level of effort. Their rebounding wasn't great, but really, they hustled and worked hard throughout. However, their shooting stinks lately and they need to figure something out there.

by Section323 on Feb 1, 2008 11:39 PM PST up reply actions

disagree
Effort, energy and hustle were very very low from about halfway through the first all the way through halftime.  There was no movement on offense and no desire on defense.

They picked it up in the third quarter and I liked their effort all through the 2nd half, even when they weren't hitting shots

by douglast on Feb 2, 2008 9:40 AM PST up reply actions

dunno about 80%
but that second quarter was pretty terrible. Let's say 33% of the game, since they didn't wake up until a couple of minutes in the third.

by abdelnaby on Feb 1, 2008 11:46 PM PST up reply actions

I've decided
the blazers like to take it to over time so much because they were saying:

"Man, Kidd keeps getting all those TRIPPLE DOUBLES!  We need to get Roy some of those!"

"Have you tried calling Kidd to see if he'll share some of them"

"Yeah, but he said they're his and he's saving them for the yankees..."

"Say what?"

"Yeah, I didn't get that.  They have blue in their uniform."

"Well, let's just take a bunch of games into overtime.  We need to get Roy some TRIPPLE DOUBLES! because he's AWESOME."

Yeah, that's why we keep going into over time.  It makes perfect sense.

Confused?
http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/nba_experts/post/Shocking-dialogue-Jason-Kidd-meets-with-Rod-Tho ?urn=nba,64142

It explains why Kidd would never come here.  Roy'd be stealing his triple doubles.  Kidd wouldn't like that much.

Colonel Rondo and his second round armada?

If Boston is determine to rebuild and cut salary isn’t two mid lotto pics and the right salary filler decent. Maybe not enough but better than what most teams get in that situation. I would prefer that over the Chris Paul package.

I hope and figure that the Trail Blazers could have the best of both worlds. I’ve never seen a more bountiful 2nd round. Its conceivable that the team could deal both lotto picks and still find some nice players in the draft. Players like Orlando Johnson, Lucas Nogueira, Kevin Jones, Will Barton are 1st rounders in most drafts even if its just based on hype and potential. Then you have some possible gems in such a deep draft like Machado, a couple guys that I personally like from Georgetown-their center Henry Sims and forward Hollis Tompson. Both high upside players that I would love to watch in the summer league. If PA were to ever buy into or trade into late first or second round now is the time. Give me Freeland, Diebler and four second rounders in the summer league with Rondo coaching.
