After that bank shot went in Hedo's face wan't the ugliest thing on the court (for a brief moment)

it’s a shame we didn’t win this one, with the way Brandon and LaMarcus played.
According to the stat sheet at the game we have five guys who shoot 3’s better this season than the best shooter on Orlando, but it sure didn’t look like it tonight. (although it’s a lot easier to shoot when you’re wide open) I suppose with the SA and Hou wins at home, we’re bound to have a few like this one get away from us this season. Gonna be an angry chalupa.

what?

You wanted us to foul with a two-point lead and five seconds remaining? I can’t say that I have ever seen that in the NBA. Maybe in a hack-a-Shaq situation but then again I don’t think Shaq is normally in the game in those situations.

by HeffBlazer on Dec 9, 2008 9:39 PM PST up reply actions

That way, you avoid loss by three points

The worst thing that can happen (if you box out on the FT) is a tied game, and you get the ball back for the final shot. Like I said, Popovitch usually lets his guys foul in that situation.

Uh, I usually don't comment in game threads.

In addition, Nate McMillan isn’t a bad coach; he’s just an average coach.

McMillian, moreover, isn’t the biggest problem, as that award goes to abysmal perimeter defense.

Anyhow, I still stand by my assertion that there should always be a pivotman on the floor.

I'd like to see Stan Van Gundy get some recognition.

I, however, am a fan of the Van Gundy brothers’ frequent use of the 4-ourside/1-inside motion offense. Jeff Van Gundy’s focus on hard-nosed man-to-man defense has earned him a bit of extra respect from me, although admittedly Stan isn’t up to par with his sibling in that regard.

Yep

And he was not happy. I don’t know if they showed it on TV or not, but long after the rest of the team has left the court, Roy hunched over by himself at the FT line with his jersey over his head for a very long moment. He was clearly devastated, and probably placing a lot of the blame on himself. From the sidelines KP came over and got him and brought him into the tunnel—it was actually a touching moment. This is what it looks like when players learn how to become champions.

Turk's not going to take the two

So we couldn’t really let him have the two. Fouling earlier probably would have been nice, but I don’t think the Blazers have ever played like that. If we foul Turk, he throws the ball wildly for 3 free throws.

If Turk had missed the shot, we’d be saying Outlaw played good defense, because it wasn’t bad.

Blake was ice ice cold. Not just off the bench. Hadn’t played since mid third quarter. Sergio kept the Blazers in the game when the threes were raining during the third quarter.

He BANKED IN A THREE. He was forced to take a bad shot and didn’t get a good look. Outlaw was in his face. He forced him to be so far off that it fell in. Nothing you can do. Not Outlaw’s fault.

I don’t think Outlaw should’ve been in near the end for a completely different reason. His bball IQ is horrendous ugly terrible atrocious bad. You know how some guys do all the little things? Trout does none of them.

Not sure how you can blame the stagnant offense and turnover on Trout, but I’m sure there must be a way.

Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Dec 9, 2008 10:28 PM PST up reply actions

I think what he's saying is...

If Batum is a better defender, he may have adjusted the shot attempt long before Hedo banked it in.

Not saying he’s right or wrong. I just think that’s being lost in the translation (For some reason, everyone thinks “Bring Batum in” equals “he would have blocked Hedo!”, when it really means was “He might have made Hedo take a tougher shot, or denied the ball to him altogether”)

I’m not sure I agree (I think Batum is a rookie and still gets owned by saavy veteran moves, and Hedo would have taken the last shot anyway… possibly a different shot). But I think we should really make sure we know the why’s for questioning the decision, as opposed to just “he couldn’t have done anything”.

a lot of blame to go around.

Roy missed FT’s
Blake losing the ball with 40 sec left. Can’t have your starting PG do that.
Roy gets double teamed, threw up a really tough shot.
LaMarcus was getting his jersey grabbed when he got that rebound…looked to me like there was still time on the shot clock when that happened.
Poor perimeter defense. The zone kept Howard out of the game, but the Magic took and made a lot of wide open Threes.
Blake calling time on the inbounds, probably not necessary.

We lost for a number of reasons but they should not have played it safe on the last possession! Several player passed up wide open looks and opportunities to take it to the basket just to run the clock down. Everyone seems to be forgetting about defense

Bad defense all game. A switch heavy defense is gonna be the death of the Blazers this year. Been a problem all year long.

Magic took advantage of mismatches and forced the Blazers to help which led to open shots on the perimeter. The Blazers also did a poor job of keep players in front of them again. So all in all, same script, except the Magic shot better than the Blazers from the 3pt line.

All these wins have been due to hot shooting, Blazers need to learn how to defend first before being taken seriously.

This game is on the perimeter D.

You have to man up and now allow so many open shots. They catch up with you… It’s not just the final minute that cost us. Look at the stats. Other than 3-pointers, we dominated the game.

It’s on the perimeter D. We have to get out to the open shooters better.

It’s December. They’re still a good young team.

Seriously, I was all set to send a comment to you in regards to your team playing a great game, how Roy and Aldridge can’t be stopped, and how Dwight Howard had a sub-par game and the Magic are very prone to blowing big and small leads…I was ready to hit send when the 9-0 run happened. Still, great effort, and the Blazers continue to impress. I wonder if Raptors fans are having a good laugh at this, considering how Blake burned them with a last second three on Sunday.

Anyway…I think you guys can totally take care of the Clippers.

The killer is that it didn’t need to come down to the final shot.

Lots of things had to happen for us to lose:

  • Nelson had to hit the tough 3 to make it 108-103
  • Blake had to turn the ball over
  • Orlando had to grab the offensive board and hit Lewis for the 3
  • Portland had to run another bad offensive possession

by blazermaniac32 on Dec 9, 2008 10:21 PM PST reply actions

Nate lost this one three times

Switching out of the Rudy/Sergio mode and in to the Roy iso mode with 5 1/2 minutes left.
Putting Blake in after sitting and cold with 2-3 minutes (?) left.
Callling the timeout with 53 seconds left and the flow tipping towards us. Result of timeout was Orlando had a trap and a plan to shut out Roy.

by Blazin' on Dec 9, 2008 10:28 PM PST reply actions

Roy iso mode was highly successful for 4 1/2 minutes

That timeout with 53 seconds left was fine. We had a 5 point lead and things were getting a little hectic. I liked that timeout. I also had no problem with Blake in down the stretch. He’s usually clutch. Today he was not.

i don’t put this one on Nate at all. I put it on the whole team for thinking they had the game won.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Dec 9, 2008 10:38 PM PST up reply actions

true Kartemax

Roy iso mode has fundamental weakness in what guys off the ball do. It’s psychological. Not in attack mode. That’s why seeing LMA and Roy working in to the Roy/Sergio mode tonight earlier in the fourth was the best I’ve seen this team play all year. Exciting! Nate stopped it.

by Blazin' on Dec 9, 2008 10:47 PM PST up reply actions

Because you have to play the game you're in

We went on a huge run with that formula. You stay with it until it show signs of faltering…

by Blazin' on Dec 9, 2008 10:42 PM PST up reply actions

Rudy's last assist made the score 91-87 with about 8 minutes left

With 2 min left, it was 108-100. Every basket in between was either scored or assisted by Roy. Roy iso-mode was working. It wasn’t just scoring (he had 3 assists in the last 6 minutes).

The last 2 minutes didn’t work. Its too bad. Your theorly that the rest of the team is psychologically not ready during Roy iso-mode is not convincing— last year Blake, Aldridge and Outlaw all made game winning shots.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Dec 9, 2008 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

yes

there was a 12-0 run that made the score 85-81. After that, the teams traded baskets to get to 91-87. At that point, the Roy isos started. By the time the switch was made, the teams were already trading baskets. The run was over.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Dec 9, 2008 11:10 PM PST up reply actions

Roy came back in the game

and there was still the Rudy/Sergio flow. Dominating with the crisp passing AND the Aldridge/Roy high pick and roll. First time I’ve seen that. Then, around 5 minutes left and they switch to Iso mode. Slow it down. And start trading baskets. I don’t know about you. but I prefer dominating to trading baskets…

by Blazin' on Dec 9, 2008 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

the point here is

to go with what’s working. Some nights, the grind is all that works. Tonight was not one of those nights

by Blazin' on Dec 9, 2008 11:08 PM PST up reply actions

not true

everything was working offensively tonight. The Blazers had 125.6 points/100 possessions— that’s huge. The Blazers had 4 empty possessions to end the game. Its partly Roy’s fault, partly Nate’s fault, partly Blake’s fault and partly the whole team’s fault for not coming to the ball when Roy got doubled. However, the offense was great virtually the whole game… it was the defense that was bad.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Dec 9, 2008 11:11 PM PST up reply actions

A basketball game is not a collection of statistics

there is the character and momentum/flow of a game to consider as well. If you did not feel the dynamic change when Sergio came out in the fourth, or in the last few minutes when the team stopped playing team offense, then there is not much for us to talk about.

by Blazin' on Dec 9, 2008 11:24 PM PST up reply actions

I'm saying...

the dynamic changed before Sergio came out. The run was over and teams were trading baskets. See my post above (response to Kartemex). It was time to go Roy, who has delivered numerous wins for the Blazers down the stretch.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Dec 9, 2008 11:27 PM PST up reply actions

jk-

in my recollection. Roy and Aldridge came back in, but Sergio stayed in the game. During this stretch, true, Roy and LMA were doing the scoring, but there was still ball movement and dynamic offense. When Outlaw came in, and finally Blake, the dynamic shifted again. This was when the momentum shifted from dominating to “Let Brandon win the game.” Brandon often does, but the team tends to sit back. And this opened the door for the momentum shift that happened in the last minute. Basketball is a psychological war.

When I saw that thing go down I couldn’t believe it…But hey let’s look at the positive, it’s not like Orlando is OKC, I mean they are a good team that got a lucky bank shot to fall. We probably should of lost at home already this season, so it was going to happen sooner or later. But this one still hurts.

by BlazerFan88 on Dec 9, 2008 10:37 PM PST reply actions

Weird.

Why didn’t they foul a poor free throw shooter away from the ball? Orlando was coming off a back to back, so even if it went to overtime it probably wouldn’t have mattered.

I agree that in general Blake is better at the end

Some of the people saying that Blake in at the end is a given didn’t see the game. I was there and I can say that ON THIS NIGHT Sergio should have been in. It did not lose us the game, but it is one of the small things in our control that would have been pretty sure to win us the game. Bayless is not ready to run the offense and I have not seen him be the defender he is claimed to be. I feel bad for Sergio, this would have a great win for him, he led us there with brandon, then was taken out and we lost. ALL this Said, Our team is Great! The lakers lost tonight. All teams will lose. We don’t need new guys, our guys will improve. Also, perhaps martell would have helped tonight.

by twggyy on Dec 9, 2008 10:53 PM PST reply actions

The failure in inbounds the pass started the huge momentum shift

It ate our final timeout, and therefore the team couldn’t pause with the Roy double team/trap. That led to a bad shot, and further momentum loss. But the lucky bank was almost too much. Maybe if I go to sleep now, I’ll wake up that the Blazers really won like they should have….good night.

by 3pointer on Dec 9, 2008 10:59 PM PST reply actions

yes

that’s the second time this season when Blake has failed to get it in and fallen back on a time out, which would be fine, except for one thing, there were teammates open. from my perspective, Blake has some problems as an inbounder in these situations: 1) He focuses 95% on his first option, 2) when that option doesn’t get open, he’s already burned 3 seconds and totally locks up mentally, 3) and doesn’t even consider one of the other 3 players. Both in this game and last time he did this, there were people open for the pass, but Blake was tension-blind to them.

great game, great effort, I have respect for the Magic so that one didn’t sting near as bad as the Boston loss. So far on 50/50 chance buzzer beater games, we are ahead, and that is a great feeling. Guess we know how Rockets/Raptors feel now, just some bad luck and unlucky bounces, missed free throws and silly events, we will learn, we will grow and we will win these in the future

due for the loss

we have one more than a couple of games based upon the luck of the last possessions..

one possession games will not always go your way..

but why did this end up as a one possession game anyhow? Great start and great team.. but all of the problems that are apparent when the Blazers let teams back in or fall apart in certain stretches are still there whether we win or lose games like these.

this was my exact thinking and why i came back tonight

I was flabbergasted and dumbfounded at the outcome. it quite frankly left me speechless. Now, I’ve had some time to chew on it and I think we were just due to lose one in this manner. We’ve won so many this season like this that you can’t possibly hope to win them all. I’d rather it wasn’t on our home floor, but it is what it is. It’s just 1 loss out of 82 games, and hopefully won’t amount to much in the long run. I think they will all learn a thing or two from this game and not let the same mistakes happen. We took a taste of our own medicine and it tastes icky. Better luck next time fellas! At least they didn’t embarrass us on our home floor as we did to them.

Every child must be encouraged to get as much education as he has the ability to take. We want this not only for his sake-but for the nation's sake. Nothing matters more to the future of our country: not military preparations-for armed might is worthless if we lack the brain power to build a world of peace; not our productive economy-for we cannot sustain growth without trained manpower; not our democratic system of government-for freedom is fragile if citizens are ignorant.

If we can beat Utah

we have 2 softies (at home) in a row. That could give us a 3 game streak to build momentum and we’d be 18-8. It hurts but its time to put this one behind us.

easier said then done. Also, one of those softies just beat the Lakers tonight. You are right though, its time to put it behind us. We’re learn a lot about this team on Thursday.

What was up with the zone in the 3rd quarter?

Magic was dropping buckets of 3s on our heads, and instead of focusing on hard-nosed man-to-man D, Nate goes to ZONE for like 4 possessions in a row, the Magic hitting 3 wide-open 3s and going up by nine. When a team is hitting open 3s, you don’t switch to zone, it makes no sense. I was pulling my hair out in section 318.

I don't think I've said this enough this year

The Blazer Zone hasn’t worked since December 07. Teams actually know how to play against it. This game was lost on the defensive end, not a couple of offensive possessions.

this I agree with

Some teams are able to get pressure on shooters from a zone D (the Syracuse Orange NCAA championship team a few years back was a great example of this), but I haven’t seen any evidence that the Blazers are one of those teams. It was a puzzling move, to be sure.

Bummer.

But if you only play one quarter of defense and expect to scrap out a win at the end against a descent team we can expect these results half of the time.

I wish these fellows would play some defense for an entire game. It doesn’t seem like the lessons from the Boston game have had any impact yet.

by PhiSlamaJama on Dec 9, 2008 11:38 PM PST reply actions

Blake should have been in at the end

As some may know, I’m a little bit of a Sergio fan, but I just wanted to say that I thought subbing in Blake was the right move. He has performed well this year in crunch time, and the team is used to having him in the game in those situations. His missed wide-open 3 and TO in the last 2 were brutal exceptions to the rule of his usual reliability. Sometimes it goes awry, but Nate was playing the right odds. Blake has shown this season that he can come in cold and hit the daggers and protect the ball, and that is why he was in.

Sergio and Rudy helped get us a lead and Sergio left the game with a +11, handing the PG role to Blake to close it out, and I think that was the right call. Tonight, it just didn’t work as planned.

I was in 317...

And during the 2 minute timeout, they were launching tshirts into the arena like they typically do to excite the crowd. I was standing cheering laughing and pointing at all the fools who can’t catch the lame tshirts like the were Braylon Edwards alone in the middle with a spiral pigskin tossed from DA.

As I pointed, a tshirt was flying about 30 mph towards my noggin, and I did a full Matrix move, and the tshirt hits the guy behind me who was being lame and texting with his BB Curve. The curve went flying, knocked over his buddy’s beer, and landed in the dude’s beer next to him. We were all laughing hysterically.

The shirt just disappeared. We figured it dropped in one of those seats. We were up 8, and they were all giving me hi-fives for the Matrix move. My reaction was just pure joy and happiness.

2 minutes later my reaction was just like everyone else. As we watched everyone leave, I saw the rolled up t-shirt under the seats of the guys above us. Picked it up and tossed it to a kid.

That was it. 99 out of 100 times it wouldn’t hit me and hit the guys behind me if i was paying attention. The guy who got his BB knocked over said that was 1 in a million chance it hit him but it was his fault for not paying attention.

Next time, I probably still be laughing but paying more attention to the rocket launchers. I like my chances that this scenario wouldn’t happen again and I wouldn’t trade any of the blissful moments that put me in that position to begin with.

I agree with the guy with the beer infested Blackberry Curve, “it happens.”

JUST A THOUGHT...

……………………… If you’re gonna go iso with Brandon in crunch time, it might be a good idea to have him playing the 2, at the top of the key with right and left options, than to have him playing the 3 in a small ball lineup, double-teamed in the corner.

And it might also be good to have a Center on the floor to rebound and put back any miss that he might make driving the lane.

Nate got cutesy flipping up his finishing lineup and the team paid the price.

Ridiculous.

When Nate went to small ball, the score was 89-87. Portland built the lead to 108-100. We were beaten by three 3-balls in the final minute, non of which would have been prevented by a center. Tough loss. Not on Nate.

Small ball is a risky strategy designed to create offensive mismatches and put up lots of points at a greater rate than the lots of points allowed from lack of defense.

It is NOT NOT NOT something that you want to go to for defensive stands, as was neatly demonstrated. You pull your goalie to create an extra attacker, to use the incredibly appropriate hockey metaphor…

Up 8 with just over 2 minutes left is TIME FOR THE BIG UNIT AND THE HALFCOURT GRIND.

The way I see it

There wasn’t anything that happened in that game that you could point to as a weakness or reoccurring trend in the blazers’ game. The Magic were hot and were destined to win that game. outside of the first half we played outstanding, but the Magic kept hitting 3’s and when they are flling there isn’t much you can do when your own 3s aren’t falling

by Jiggamant on Dec 10, 2008 12:12 AM PST reply actions

Enough of the blame game and the woe is me

This is the NBA. Any team can beat any team by getting lucky (bank in 3 is lucky, no matter how you slice it) or by playing above their heads (Jameer Nelson, anyone?). Tip your hats to the Magic, focus on the good things the Blazers have accomplished, and move on. 3 times out of 4 we win this game; today was the 1 out of 4.

This is why we play 82 games. These things happen to the best of teams. The 72-10 Bulls lost to one of the worst teams in the league, and lost again the next game (might have been vice versa). You don’t get all annoyed and start calling for the coach’s head. Irritates me.

I actually enjoyed this game. How about those alley-oops to Rudy? LaMarcus’s deadly shooting? Joel Przybilla hitting the shot and the foul after the between-the-legs pass by Rudy? Sergio looking like an NBA point guard? Dwight Howard held to a shell of himself? I think this game was played quite well, and if not for 3 miraculous long-balls we walk away with a satisfying win.

right on dude

I enjoyed the game tremendously — right up until the final 30 seconds or so when things were starting to look rather inauspicious.

I think this was one of the best games the Blazers have played all year. And our play was built on solid foundations. Good ball movement, good defense (though there were stretches of bad defense too), and phenomenal play from LMA and Roy.

We played toe to toe with a championship contender. And we played them even. If they hadn’t had that uncharacteristically electric shooting performance from Jameer Nelson, we would have won this game fairly easily. Or if Roy had not missed five free throws we would have won. Those things are not going to happen very often. Technically we lost but in spirit we won, so I enjoyed the game and I am quite happy this morning.

Bad Timeout

IMHO the timeout Nate called with Brandon coming up the floor with the ball was a poor one…..when you have the lead and your opponent has only 1 timeout left you shouldnt give them a free stoppage and a chance to set up their defense. They werent in a good position to double Brandon on that play and I think he could have created a good possession instead of the disaster that evolved out of Nate’s timeout.

And although Blake has been clutch at the end of games he was just off all night and Sergio didnt do anything to deserve getting yanked…..he played prob the best game of his career and I dont see the justification to pull him there.

I was at the game and when I saw Nate chasing Roy up the floor screaming for a timeout it just didnt seem like the right call…….

That has to be the worst 2-3 possessions Blake has ever had. I am sure he feels terrible (or turrble as Barkley would say).

Let’s hope they take their frustration and make it into a great game at Utah.

And I have to say it since its been evident since the pre-season..oden just looks like he would rather be anywhere else but on the bball court…..he’s a very nice guy and I dont want a Garnett-idiot but he just doesnt seem to have any intensity or joy in his game…looks like he is at an insurance conference…bored…..depressed….tired…and anxious to just have it be over…. I wonder if something is going on with him outside of the game thats affecting him….. we all want him to succeed so badly….too bad he doesnt seem to be embracing the experience……

now worries about taking that promise, cuz I know there is no way it happens.

Travis peaked last season. He’s improved his outside shot this season, but defenses are learning to defend him, so it’s been a wash. His rebounding and defense looks ok sometimes, but it’s not consistent.

All those minutes last night and 1 rebound, 1 assist,…. yuck, yuck, yuck.

Travis will not peak for another 3-4 years. He is still expanding his game and adding new moves. And he is making steady progress on defense and rebounds.

If we give Travis 10 years in the league to reach his potential

then we should be fair and give everyone that long.

Sorry, doesn’t work that way. There are certain “intangibles” and things like a BBIQ that some players will never develop. Travis has been given ample time to do so and now you ask for 3-4 more years.

I don’t want to take a chance on a 6-year veteran who still needs time to develop. I’d rather take a chance on a 19-year French dude and Martell (4th year in the league… and he need to recover from his injury).

KP has said he likes guys that come from big schools and...

that have played big games in college. Travis neither went to college, has played in any playoff games nor was a KP draft pick. I see KP sending him packing along with RLEC at or before the trade deadline.
