Martell Webster Injured
During his pregame comments here at the Rose Garden, Nate McMillan let the media know that Martell Webster sustained an injury during Sunday's game at Toronto. "Hopefully it's nothing really serious," Nate said. During halftime of the Raptors game, after Martell had played just five minutes in his first game back in roughly 10 weeks, Martell notified Nate that he felt pain in his foot. The pain was felt in the same foot that he injured during the preseason.
Martell is meeting with a doctor tonight and more information, including a definite timetable, will be available within the next 24-48 hours. It is not yet known whether he will be held out of any additional games, aside from tonight, which he will not be playing in. Word is that he injured a toe on the same foot as his previous injury, however during the session I attended Nate did not confirm that the two injuries were directly related.
Speculation from multiple reporters here at the Rose Garden puts the timetable at 4-6 weeks.
Obviously we will pass on more information as it becomes available and confirmed by team sources. Nate will go with the usual starting lineup (Nic at the 3) and will "rotate the way we've been rotating."
Update (6:33PM): Joe Freeman cites team sources with a 4 week timeline. He also has a statement from KP which says the pain from this injury is different from the pain in the earlier injury.
Update (6:37PM): Here's the official press release from the team.
MARTELL WEBSTER SIDELINED WITH FOOT INJURY
PORTLAND, Ore. - Trail Blazers guard/forward Martell Webster will be sidelined for approximately four weeks after experiencing acute pain in his left foot Sunday at Toronto.
Webster experienced pain Dec. 7 against the Raptors, his first game back after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot on Oct. 9. An X-ray taken Monday revealed that the fracture has regressed from an X-ray taken late last month.
"The good news is that Martell is not experiencing pain at the fracture site," said Kevin Pritchard, Trail Blazers General Manager. "He is, however, experiencing pain in his little toe joint (head of the fifth metatarsal bone). While it's an unfortunate setback for Martell, we feel putting additional stress on the foot at this time is not conducive for complete healing."
Webster will be placed in a walking boot for two weeks at which time he'll be reevaluated and an updated treatment plan will be implemented.
A fourth-year Trail Blazer, Webster initially incurred the injury in an Oct. 7 preseason game vs. Sacramento.
Webster, 22, has career averages of 8.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.8 assists while averaging 37.2% (279-for-750) from 3-point range in 219 games (115 starts) with the Trail Blazers.
UPDATE (7:09PM): Brother Wendell has a nice line from Martell.

Quick said 4-6 weeks. Hope it's not that serious, so Martell can see some action soon

Wait, which is it?
The right bar says 4-6 weeks, you are saying the injury might on the toe and not related to his previous injury at all?

Jason Quick said 4-6 weeks when he was on 1080 the FAN
Now he is saying about a month on the pregame show

I'm opening myself up for some hate with this thought:
This news ain’t cool for Matell but it is good for our team. It will give Batum the minutes to continue his development (and I remain totally convinced he is our SF of the future). It also allows Travis and Rudy additional floor time.
I like Martell just fine. But he was never the consistent long baller that most of us hoped he would be. It could still eventually come, but there just isn’t room for him right now.
(of course I’m in the minority I’m sure, by favoring Outlaw for a significant role on the team over Webster)
I would like to see him some time before the trade deadline to know if he had improved (like it looked in the pre-season)
This way, it would be highly risky to move either one.
B-Rex bandwagon begins
Bad for Martell, Fine for the Blazers
Batum doing a fine job, last few games, he hasn’t played well though.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
Actually
you may be right for the wrong reasons.
1. Even if Martell is the future, right now we’re trying to get Greg assimilated, and bringing Martell back into the middle of that can disrupt too many things. By a month from now, I expect Greg to be much more effective on the offensive end, and everyone to be more comfortable with him on the floor. If we bring Martell back at that point, it may go a lot better.
2. More time for Batum’s development.
3. More time for Travis to show whether or not he can be a 3 for us, or has to be a 4 to be most effective.
4. A little more time for Frye to try to rescue his season and Portland career.
5. A little more time, if KP does work a mid-season trade, for these guys to bump up their trade value.
6. If we can get Martell into the flow before the playoffs, he’ll be a lot fresher than guys that have been playing the entire season, as well.
So, while this isn’t a good thing at all, there are silver linings.

The worst part
was how unnecessary it was for him to be out on the court in the first place. Wait until you’re actually ready. We’re plenty deep… feel free to even lolly gag for a bit. We gave him he money, there should’ve been no rush. Long term investments get to heal up before returning to action (unless its the playoffs). Stupid stupid management all the way around.
I can guarantee
that they didn’t think he was rushed, and they thought he was “actually ready”. No one wants a Bill Walton situation again.
Do you know what the medical reports and tests were saying, and know how to evaluate them? If not, how do you know they rushed it?
Martell had been practicing for a lot longer periods of time than the time he spent on the court in that game.

Take your time coming back Marty. We NEED you strong for our post-season!

I take the blazers on faith that they’re right about this toe pain not being DIRECTLY related to his foot injury.
I also take it on faith that Martell was dead serious about doing his rehab right and not reinjuring himself.
But the proximity of the new injury is IMHO, hardly a coincidence. My suspicion is that he managed to overstress the toe area by overcompensating his protection of the outside of his foot.
Probably means nothing but I give tech support, which means I’m OCD about trying to explain why stuff breaks. >.<
feet are notoriously difficult to heeal and get right
that’s why the bastinado (beating the foot as torture) was developed, well-known in the spanish inquisition for instance.
there are just SO MANY little bones, and everything interacts because all your weight is on it as you walk or run.
good luck to martell.
