Today's Poll -- 1st Quarter Media Rankings

As Dave wrote below, the first quarter is over and report cards are in the mail. Dave covered the players so now I'll ask you to tackle the media (Outside BE, of course).

In the comments, I'd like to hear you explain who you picked for MVP and why.  Also, please weigh in on other possible awards.  Who is Most Improved?  Who is Most Surprising?  Who is Most Provocative?  Who is Most Original?  Who wins an award that you just thought up right now?

Please keep your feedback as constructive as possible... less whine, more insight, please!  Media are people too.

if you'd like to take Dave or myself to town for something that we did (or didn't) do during the first quarter, by all means let us have it.  But if it's something serious, I'd recommend an email.

Meagher does need some more love, but Barret is best

I agree, SM is really the workhorse of media coverage, posts tons of information, and his link posts always wrangle out good stuff.

He was definitely #2 on my MVP list.

That being said, I had to vote Mike Barret – calling Blazer games, chatting on courtside, even writing blog posts, does the man ever sleep or see his family? That’s some serious dedication, and I think he does a good job of reining in Rice when he can get a bit bombastic.

Although I don't care for the guy much...

Quick is the tops of the non BE Blazers media. He has his hand in a little bit of everything. From getting to know the players, and the relationships between them, to talking to KP about the future of the team, and some things he notices around the league, I always love reading his stories on possible things to come, from trades to tough off season decisions. If Dave wasn’t around, a lot of us would be over there a lot more.

by as11osu on Dec 9, 2008 11:26 AM PST reply actions

J. Quick gets it

He’s just like any another obsessive Blazer’s fan, except with the ability to write, and a backstage pass. Which means he writes exactly what I would write if I had the talent and access.

I wish we could just have a list of the different ways he has examined the team, at least 5 different ways each week?? Totally awesome.

I excluded Quick, Barrett, and Casey because they have such a huge access advantage – they SHOULD be putting out great stuff.

I voted for Gavin from among the rest, mostly because of sheer volume. He talks Blazers a LOT, and he is well informed and clearly follows the team very closely.

Since Dave & Ben aren’t on the list . . . Besides, I like Casey’s mix — a few links, a few intertesting stats, a few inside stories, etc.

I respect Quick’s work too. And Mike Barrett wins the Best Cheerleader vote, hands down.

by Corvid on Dec 9, 2008 11:33 AM PST reply actions

Quick gets my hopes up too often

Last spring he mentioned on the radio that he over heard the brass talking about aquiring Calderon. He later went on to say that the major trade in the offseason was going to be for Calderon. I am still holding my breath. Memo to Quick…stop playing with my emotions.

by HardCorvallis on Dec 9, 2008 11:36 AM PST reply actions

Quick has

more access than anyone else, bar none. Meaning, aside from people who actually work for the Blazers and thus aren’t likely to say half the stuff they see and hear, he gets the blazers talk to him and then he reports it, even when it’s not necessarily positive. He is almost always the first to break news on the Blazers, and almost always has the most in depth reporting on them, at least when the piece doesn’t have to do with numbers. Nate McMillan in particular is always talking to Quick, but all the players eventually end up talking to him, even when he’s writing a piece about how much they are slumping.

He gets a lot of flak. I remember people put him down one time for doing a story on how much players sweat right when Brian Hendrickson did a really insightful statistical piece. I think part of the reason Quick has the access he does is because he writes stories like that… the players are more likely to enjoy stories that are less critical, and more of a fluffy “feature” type artical, and that gets him brownie points that he uses to work toward the more hard hitting stuff. So he does put out some fluff, and he does try to put in analysis as well, and sometimes that doesn’t work as well.

1. Barrett — He’s travelled with the team for years, has tons of experience with the guys. Always seems to have an inside look.

2. Casey — Speaking of inside, how ’bout Casey traveling with the team? Always cool to hear his stuff. My favorite piece has been his one of the guys in the pizza joint when no one even recognized them. That was awesome journalism. A great piece.

I voted for Mike Barrett for the pure reason that he has the ability to absolutely clown on Mike Rice at least twice every game which makes me laugh out loud. Last game it was (in referring to Rice) “people boo you all the time” after Rice made a ridiculus comment. Priceless.
On a side note, I’m giving Rice the “Most Sounding Like a Drunken Rambler” award for his increasingly odd and awkward tangents. Is this guy senile or what?

they were doing the pregame spot on the big screen at the RG, and Rice made a comment on how he expected the game to go down to the wire (it was Miami, IIRC). Quick gets my vote....

He is an EXCELLENT writer….and that must not be overlooked. He has the necessary perspective of not being a Blazer employee, not that I don’t like Blazer employees (Heck, I wish I WAS one) but that it is difficult to be truly fair when the subject of your writing is your employer. ALso, he is teh first to admit that this team is a dream to cover…..unlike the Zach/Rasheed years.

And let’s not overlook (as if THAT’s possible) Canzano. What people often forget is that he’s a columnist….his job is to get people to react to and discuss what he writes. Mission accomplished. He did a great job of holding the Blazers feet to the fire during the evil empire days (Hello Bob Whitsitt/Steve Paterson), and deserves much credit. His job is NOT to be a cheerleader, but to shine a light where it isn’t always wanted. Yet he comes up with some of the most amazing heartfelt columns, often about longtime Blazer fans.

Finally a big hats off to Mike Barrett, who is tireless in getting info out about the team. I don’t know how he does all stuff that he does in a 24 hour day. And he does it with grace and class.

by antediluvian on Dec 9, 2008 12:58 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

Canzano: insufficient output for this poll

He’s hardly put out any Blazer columns in this “first quarter”. He’s been mostly OSU and UO for the last few months.

While I’ll grant that Canzano has been an OK muckraker he also gets it wrong quite frequently: disparaging Kevin Pritchard as a sidekick to Nash and Patterson, implying that the Zach sex scandal would destroy the Blazers, making up weird trade rumors like Zach for Iverson, Morrison-love…

by lama on Dec 9, 2008 1:42 PM PST up reply actions

good point

Canzano thrives when things are going poorly. He was the perfect columnist during the end of the Jail Blazers and the Henchmen era at One Center Court.

Now that things are going good, he isn’t as effective. Maybe it’s harder for a columnist to be investigative and gadfly-ish when things are going good.

But Canzano deserves credit for his past contributions.

You can even see it with college football. Several weeks ago Canzano said it was time for Bellotti to get out of Oregon. He said it would be good if Tennessee took Bellotti off our hands.

Then, last night, he told Mike Riley straight up that Bellotti deserved Coach of Year in the Pac 10 over Riley.

OSU and Oregon both had “good” seasons, and Canzano doesn’t really know how to make a good column of it. But he serves an important role when things are going badly. He proved his worth by sticking up for the fans and against the organization when things were bad a few years ago. He was one of the first people to call for Kevin Pritchard for GM.

No option of choosing Rice? For a drunk hunchback, he has a great Basketball IQ! Mike Rice tells it how it is…and that’s rare these days. Speaking of guys telling it how it is, I’m surprised DJ didn’t receive as many votes. His insight into the game is great, and sometimes, a throwback to the days of yore are much needed in sports.

And the fact that Joltin’ Mike Holton didn’t make the list is the most disturbing news out of this blog in a long time.

Living outside of Portland, Brian Wheeler and Antonio Harvey are my main connection to the Blazers. (Thanks Comcast). Radio is a frustratingly anachronistic way to follow games. But at least I have Wheels and Tone to soften the blow.

Brian Hendrickson

While Mike Barrett gets to see more (;ots of love to Mike) and Jason Quick has worked hard this year to repair the damage he has done in the past (peeking through the blinds!), Brian Hendrickson has been even-handed and analytical through all these years. He actually gets the difference between observation and statistics and seems to blend the two quite well.

Hendrickson.

It’s unfortunate the lack of attention Hendrickson gets. He is one of the only media people covering the Blazers that understands the majority of the CBA, writes detailed statistical analysis, and also writes great stories.

His stories aren’t in the dramatic undertone that some of Quick’s stories take, nor does he involve himself in the stories like Quick does at times.

While Brian Hendrickson may not work for the Oregonian in my opinion the best newspaper (and newspaper website) to go to for unbiased and in-depth Blazers news is the Blazers section of the Columbian. That is all thanks to him.

How is there no Mike Rice option?

I know he’s not capable of blogging but he gets my vote because of how much his commentary drives my (warrior fan) roommates insane

they hate him SO MUCH and i LOVE IT…i’ll always turn the volume up when he starts rambling just to piss them off

this is true

He makes for a secret weapon. +1 to Mike Rice for making the opposing team’s viewers ears bleed.

when i get sad, i stop being sad & become awesome again. true story.

JQ -- head and shoulders.

I love his game recaps and am always disappointed when I find it’s Freeman who has written one. And all Jason’s player and team related articles are totally entertaining.

Quick is the best.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
