Who's #2 In the Western Conference? (With Poll)

Right now, the Blazers are #2 in the Western Conference standings.  (WOW!  YAY!  HOORAY!)  These are the days of good feelings, excitement, and looking forward to the next Blazers win!  After the down years we can all collectively rejoice!  Give someone a high five!  It feels great!

But even being the big-time Blazer homer I am, I have my doubts if we really are the second best team in the West.  Has this been a lucky streak, or are we really coming together as a tallented contender?  As I pondered this and looked at the current standings, the question came...   Who is #2 then?

As you scan down the current standings you see a bunch of good teams with their own question marks.  Many of them could make a viable case that they are the second best team.  I think we've had 6 or 7 different teams actually ranked #2 at some point so far this season, and some have then fallen as far as 8th.  So the question of who's #2 could be answered a few ways:

1.  You could fill that position with the team you think will finish runner up in the Western Conference Finals.

2.  You could look to the team who you think will finish the regular season with the second best record.

3.  You could analyze who you think currently is playing overall to the second best level.

4.  You could use one of the many power rankings.

5.  Or you could scrutinize the players on each team to conclude who has the second best collection of talent.

Rather than attempt to be brilliant like Dave, and try to break down each of these methods myself, I’ll let everyone hash it out in the comments.  But it’s clear that after the L*akers, in the West this year, it’s truly the Wild Wild West.

Vote in the poll below.  I have them listed in the order they currently stand.

You could make a case for Portland

Unless you try to place them in the Western Conference Finals.

Well, if we're a 2 or 3 seed . . .

. . . then we wouldn’t see the presumed-top-seed L[xxx]rs on the way to the conference finals.

I could see us take a 6/7-seed in the first round and stand a chance against the co-2/3-seed in the second round.
I have nooooo problem with that particular vision.

Honestly.

I think San Antonio is going to make their final run this year. Timmy is playing out of his mind… once they get healthy, I wouldn’t want to face them in the playoffs.

Seeding will be key in the playoffs

Interestingly 1 or 2 games in the standings could be huge for several teams. I think getting into the opposite bracket from the Lakers is one key to the Western Conference playoffs this year.

Oh, baby - yeah.

If the Spoors get in as a 4/5-seed, that’s a huge second-round trap for them,
and we’d miss them if we’re a 2 or 3.

Then again, if the 4-5 first-round matchup is Spoors/Blazers . . . yowza.

As with my reply to TDB above, we should fight like jeebus to not just make the playoffs, but get a top-3 seed.

We don't know how good we are yet.

We have got off to an amazing start for sure, but the good teams STAY this good. We still don’t have a solid identity as a team, with players that are still carving their niche. I think we will know about where we stand around game 60. IMHO.

This is the year

for an 8 team scrum out west for the 2-9 seeds. Honestly, pulling names out of a hat to predict the final order is as good as any 5 methods for ranking teams given in the main post. Injuries will be a key factor in deciding whether a team goes high on the list or drops to the bottom. So far I like our odds.

I voted San Antonio...

cuz I fear them. They do this every year… start out slow, nurse back to health, then BAM… they nail you right in the jaw. Duncan, Parker, Ginobili… they still have a very good team.

I think New Orleans overachieved last year, but I don’t know by how much. I’m not ready to give them #2 just yet as they don’t feel that strong to me.

Utah has been hurting all year and they are Utah… they gotta be up there.

Denver is playing great right now. I don’t know how long they can keep it up… I mean, they still have Melo and JR and KMart on the same team, right? I don’t think they’re emotionally stable enough to be #2.

Houston would be a freak of nature if they could stay healthy… but they’ve shown year in and year out that they cannot. I won’t give them #2, but they could take it if the injuries give them a break.

Dallas and Phoenix have missed their chances. Still good, even very good… but not #2.

The Blazers… I’m definitely impressed with what we’ve shown, but I don’t buy into a legitimate #2 just yet. I think we’re just too young and inexperienced for it, but the way this season has played out so far, they could very likely prove me wrong. Here’s the thing… I wondered in the preseason if our energetic bunch could steal some games early in the year from “not elite but still top tier teams” who would come out of the gate a little slow and weren’t making a push just yet, and that totally happened. Count me in as someone who is VERY interested to see how we play against these teams in March and April.

As written, the question is easily answered.

Who IS the second best team in the west? Portland. That much is obvious.

Who WILL BE the second best at the end of the year? Well, that’s a more difficult one to answer. Probably San Antonio, Phoenix, or New Orleans. But right now, those teams still have to put things together and prove it.

I have no idea...

I said Utah, but they’ve been injured. New Orleans could be right there as well. I think San Antonio will compete for the championship, but they’re too veteran (read old) to care overmuch about the regular season. Phoenix isn’t good enough. Denver might be.

Agreed

Or New Orleans. Rough start to the season but still with a good record, well within touching distance of the spot despite not playing up to their normal standard.

But I still think it is Utah. This is their year (their last year, by the way) to win the NW.

Likewise

They’ve put up a record close to the other 2-9 teams even though AK-47, D-Williams, and Boozer have all missed a LOT of time. They seem to be the clear favorite to become the second best team in the West. Best combo of depth, experience, balance, and overall star power.

That all depends on D-Will snapping out of his funk and returning the form he showed in the second half last season. Unfortunately, he probably will.

An Interesting Side thought...

One of these teams will miss the playoffs. If we had a similar poll for who that would be, you would see some of the teams who are getting votes for #2 would also get votes that they will be the one left out of the playoffs.

I think you can safely say the Blazers will make the playoffs. Although the upper tier teams are still giving us big problems, we have evidently solved the riddle of beating all the middle and lower tier teams. This will give us enough wins to stay in the top 8 by the end of the year.

by GoBlazersWIN on Dec 8, 2008 11:53 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think you can safely say the Blazers will make the playoffs.

And why is this? There are only 8 playoff spots in the West and 9 teams. We do have a 2 1/2 game lead over Phoenix, San Antonio and Dallas. With 60 to play, I am not sure that’s going to hold up!

by Blazin' on Dec 8, 2008 12:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Why not?

Like I mentioned above. We seem to be reliably beating the middle and lower tier teams. If we keep that up, which I believe we will, mathematically we will have enough wins to be in the top 8.

by GoBlazersWIN on Dec 8, 2008 12:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The burden of proof is on you, making the assertion.

i will say that it is a strange logic. Creating some arbitrary categories and then claiming that we are beating the teams in one category as a rationale for making the playoffs…

Let’s simplify the issue.

Here are our competitors in the West:

1. Los Angeles
2. San Antonio
3. Houston
4. Utah
5. New Orleans
6. Phoenix
7. Dallas
8. Denver

Yes, by virtue of the fact that there appears to be 9 teams, and 8 spots, I think we have a very good chance of making the playoffs. But are you ready to say that we are substantively better than any other team on that list? Cause that’s the only way your assertion makes sense.

2 1/2 games is not a significant lead at this point in the season.

It’s simply to early, IMO, to make this kind of prediction.

by Blazin' on Dec 8, 2008 12:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Against teams with losing records

We are 5-1 on the road and 3-0 at home. That supports his assertion that we are reliably beating the middle and lower teams.

We certainly HAVE been substantively better than most of those teams. We are ahead of all of them except LA, despite a much tougher schedule.

Our schedule is tougher than the other contenders in the following ways:
1. Less rest. We’ve played 22, which only Utah matches (we’re 2 games ahead of them). Denver and Phoenix have played 21, Houston 20. Dallas and S.A. have only played 19, and N.O. has only played 17! The Hornets will have to play more games on short rest than us, by quite a margin, the rest of the way. Edge to Portland.
2. Road games. We’ve played 15. Next closest is Denver, Houston, and Phoenix with 11. Young teams generally play much better at home, and that has been the case with us so far. 57% of our remaining games are at home. Everyone else has played roughly an equal number of home/road games (within 2 games of being equal). Big edge to Portland going forward.
3. Quality of opposition. We have played 9 games against teams that currently have losing records, and 13 against teams with winning records. Of those teams with winning records, all except Miami are almost certain to maintain that status, and Miami probably will — against the rest of the league, they are 11-7, and have played more away than home. One of the games against a losing team was against a team that probably will end up with a winning record (Toronto). It is likely that we have only played 8 games against teams that will end up with a losing record, which means we have a lot of games against weaker teams left. Far more than the other contenders have left. Advantage Portland.

Really, really nice expansion, JS.

I’d add one more thing.

Our weaknesses right now are defensive rotations, transition defense lapses, and a set offense where we look slow. In that set offense it’s as if they haven’t played together very much.

We’d be so much better at all three of these issues if we thought less and simply reacted, but that’s a lot to ask with so many new faces and line up changes. The only solution here is time together, sort of like the reason the olympic squad spent so much prep time together.

For this and the reasons listed by the Scot, I am confident we’ll finish ahead of whichever of the #2-#8 teams falter in the next few months.

Perfect practice makes perfect.

So true

The home/road disparity is a big part of the reason why the Blazers are so highly regarded in both the objective (Hollinger) and subjective power rankings.

Continuing on this track, the Blazers are playing consistent with a 55+ win team right now.

They may well take a step back, as most young teams do. But they’re in an unbelievably good position right now given the schedule.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Dec 8, 2008 4:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You know what's funny?

Due to that weighting with Hollinger, we could keep winning, but see our status drop as our schedule gets easier. :\

by zaruga on Dec 8, 2008 7:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nice

Although #3 is a little weak. According to Hollinger, our SOS is .522, comparable to Phoenix and Dallas.

Can’t decide whether our penchant for winning games on the last shot bodes well or poorly for our chances. It’s good that we’re clutch, but can we count on those wins to be a reflection of our level as a team?

Don’t get me wrong, I think we’ll make the playoffs. Just not ready to call it a sure bet ust yet. That said, Hollinger playoff odds are historically pretty good.

I put up a post with a breakdown of the remaining games using a slightly different metric.

by Blazin' on Dec 8, 2008 5:11 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

the season is favoring us so far.

But there is one funny detail in saying you are “substantively better” than another team. The confidence to beat them! Which team on that list are you confident of beating?

by Blazin' on Dec 8, 2008 5:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

#3 being weak
  1. is weak compared to Utah, Phoenix, and Denver — no substantive difference there.
  1. is weak compared to Phoenix and Dallas.

That said, #2 gives us a huge edge over everyone, and #1 and 3 give us additional advantages over everyone but Phoenix. And, of course, we’re 2 1/2 games ahead of Phoenix.

Update — Houston lost a road game last night, so they now have played 12, three less than us, and three more road games than home games. They are 1 1/2 games behind us.

As to “substantively better”, I said we HAVE been substantively better. Time will tell whether that will continue or not. But so far, we’ve been better than all of them, in putting up a better record against a substantially tougher schedule. Perhaps Denver could make a case (we’re tied in the loss column and only up one win), or perhaps New Orleans (they actually have one less loss, but their schedule has been wimpy compared to ours).

I am very confident, though, that this team will make the playoffs. I do not know which teams will finish ahead of us, because I don’t know which will put it together, and every one of them has the potential to win 55+. But they won’t all do that, and barring major injury, we’ll be ahead of some of them.

I’ll check out your post, for sure.

and that makes it so so there! .

If I had to predict based on my own observations and analysis…if PDX stays relatively healthy, they should make the playoffs this year.

We still have lots of games....

…left against the crappiest teams in both conferences.

Consider, we have not yet played a single game against Memphis, LAC, OKC, MIL, Charlotte, or Philadelphia. These teams have a combined record of 27-75 currently. This accounts for 18 games remaining on our schedule that should all be wins.

We also have 2 games remaining each against Minnesota, Golden State, and Sacramento. That’s another 6 likely wins.

Add 24 wins to the 15 we already have… You’re already almost to 40 wins on the year. It’s therefore only going to take 10 additional wins against mid-level teams like Chicago, Indiana, New Jersey, Toronto, New York, Miami (all East teams, whom the Boston loss is our ONLY east loss to date on the year) to get to 50 wins… Which will get us into the playoffs.

It would take a SERIOUS tank job at this point to drop the Blazers out of the Playoff picture. I just don’t see it happening. Other teams have much tougher schedules to play.

We haven’t played Atlanta yet. Those are probably wins. I like our chances against a lot of remaining teams at home, too. Dallas, Utah, Washington, Denver, even Phoenix are winnable at home.

And our record against LAL is strong at home… Though that one’s a lot less certain this year than it has been in a long time.

Clips (4), Memp (4), OKC (4), Minn (2), GS (2), Philly (2), Char (2), ATL (2), Indy (2), Milw (2), Toronto (1), Chi (1), Wash (1), NYC (1), Sac (1).

That equals 31 …plus the 15 we have right now= 46

Now I am not saying we will win all of those games….but we also aren’t gonna cough up all the games against the good teams either. I would say we about as close to lock to get that 50 wins and the playoffs as anyone could want.

PS I will whisper the one thing that can derail it ……..(***injuries****).

Thanks.

That’s a good breakdown.

Speaking of Injuries… Short of one particular guy going down, we are well stocked to handle injuries this season. (Evidence; we’ve been without our starting SF all year until yesterday, and still have 2nd best record in the west.)

And even if Brandon did miss time, IMO Rudy’s a more than adequate fill-in player. Not Brandon, maybe, but still pretty good. Plus, Jerryd would get some burn.

Injuries could actually end up being a positive, for us… like it has been for Batum’s development.

We are better equipped to battle through any injuries than most any other team.

For the playoffs though, we need everyone healthy. It’s one thing to go through the math and see we can make the playoffs mainly just by beating the teams we should. However, those are not the teams we will face in the playoffs. In the playoffs we will likely face a good team who is totally focused. Of course, we’ll be focused too.

Top teams that embarass us

right now there are only 3 teams in the league on that list and two are in the Eastern conference (LAL, Bos and Cle). Those are the only teams likely to blow us out. MOreover, blowout losses are more likely on the road of which we only have two game son the road left aginast those 3 teams. We hold our own against the rest of the league. As I stated in another post, we only need to have one more road win than home losses from here on out to reach 50 wins.

Neither do the Lakers, right?

They got blown off the court in Boston last year in Game 6.

Blowouts happen. Worse ones than that, even. It’s far from an indication that the Blazers are only the seventh best team in the West.

If the Blazers finish 7 or 8, it will be due to some very stiff competition combined with a few disappointing losses in games that should’ve been won. The number of quality wins thus far has been impressive.

If Boston + LA equal the “tough teams in this league”… luckily those games don’t happen all that often. Any other teams, the Blazers have proven they can beat.

I picked Utah.

I picked Utah. Utah once they get healthy will be tough. The Jazz are good.
