Blazer Stat Leaders in Various Categories
While no Blazer player really stands out in the major categories (Points, Rebounds, Steals, Assists, Blocks), there are a number of Blazers who stand out statistically. Here's some interesting figures showing how our players are getting the job done in less flashy ways.
- Travis Outlaw is second in the league in 3pt %, at .500 (31-62) (To Jason Kapono)
- Joel is shooting 55-67 FG% (.833) on the season (The highest % for any player with more than 1 shot attempt)
- Rudy is shooting 95.3 FT% (3rd in the league for players with 30+ attempts)
- Steve Blake is 93.9 FT% (4th in the league for players with 30+ attempts)
- Oden has 3.54 Blocks per 48 Minutes (11th in the league for players with 15 or more GP)
- Oden has 6 double-doubles in only 15 games so far this year
- Sergio is 2nd in the NBA in Assists per 48 mins... To Chris Paul.
- Sergio is also 12th in the NBA in Assist to Turnover ratio (among players with at least 40 assists)

What a difference a year makes!
There once was a Sea’ Cap’n Nate
Whom with Blazers did negotiate.
The pool, t’was so deep!
"That KP don’t sleep."
Gold medals and rings were his fate.

Sergio has really...
…improved his ability to take care of the basketball. Something many other “flashy” players never learned (see Jason Williams).
I mostly credit Nate for this. But definitely major props to Sergio for the progress he has made.

the thing I've been just as impressed with
is Sergio’s improvement on the other end of the court. He literally has surpassed Steve Blake defensively, and before the year, most here would’ve thought that an impossibility. So far, the opponent that Sergio defends this year is shooting an eFG% of 33% <——ridiculous number being pointed out (easily the best on the team this year).

Playing much better on D, but...
With his lateral quickness he still has a lot of room to improve. He seems never to really be in a good defensive stance, and he’s always too close to PGs who are 30 feet from the bucket.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

I wonder if that close guarding
is a coaching decision to try and up the pressure a little and push the pace with the second unit. You would think if Nate didn’t want him doing that, it would be so very easy to adjust, and not an adjustment that would be hard for Sergio to remember.
I don’t know, it isn’t as if he is really pressuring the ball hard. Kind of weird.

I'd like to know
the blazers points per possession when he’s in.
That’s probably the best measure, right?
or sergio fg + assist per possession

the offense is actually a lot worse when he's in
and the D is a lot better…but that’s likely a function of who he plays with and against as much as anything.

You also missed...
Overall Rebound Rate… Greg is #1 overall at 22.2% and Joel is #3 overall at 21.3%.
Defensive Rebound Rate… Greg is #2 at 31.5% and Joel is # at 31%

Its also kind of funny
Joel is #1 overall in TS% at 80% which is actually lower than his FG% of 83. Virtually all players have higher TS percentage than FG percentage. Stupid free throws…
by as11osu on Dec 7, 2008 3:43 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Generally, it's the guards who get a big bump in the TS%
due to all the 3 pointers they make.

I said this once the other day, but I feel the need to reiterate that ...
Joel Przybilla looks like he’s taken lessons from Artis Gilmore regarding low-post shooting efficiency.
On that note, it’s a shame that the “A-Train” isn’t in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Great stat
That’s been HUGE for the Blazers this year.
Last year, they were a bad rebounding team, and this year they’ve been great. That’ll happen when you replace Frye and LMA’s minutes at backup C with the number one rebound rate in the league.
That’s what has gone unnoticed in some respects about Oden’s impact. Even when he looks awkward and turns the ball over a few times, and even when the backboard is more worried about being broken by the big guy’s “hook” than by a (missed) thunder dunk, his impact on the boards is HUGE and cannot be overstated.
This also (as PoliSam proved statistically) carries over to the D. A solid rebounding rate improves offensive and defensive efficiency because you can extend possessions on O and end them on D.
Rebounds were the story of today’s game. I cracked up in the fourth when Toronto’s announcers celebrated their second offensive board of the game.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

wasn't today's game Greg's 7th double double?

Stats are taken off NBA.COM today
…so they likely do not yet include today’s figures.
It will be interesting to track these stats as they update.

I enjoyed this post. thank you.
it's kind of hard to keep your composure when you're down 20 -Oden

Oden always gets shorted on blocks
The NBA’s system of crediting the obviously biased opinion of the home team’s “official scorer” is a joke.
Oden had at least three clear blocks in the first quarter and only got credit for one. Meanwhile, I’m pretty sure JO got credit for a few while sitting on the bench, on the way to 6 for the game.
The injustice! The outrage! Something must be done.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?

Something will be done...
…It’s called “playing some home games”, something we’ve only done 7 times thus far (out of 22 games played), and are therefore due to see more of in the near future.

Jacking up shots
and not passing it to Rudy are the only things that Brandon is good at. I can’t wait till KP trades him for Pau and Outlaw for Marc and RLEC for Calderon and signs Navarro and then we’ll win 72 straight NBA championships.

The Mike's said Aldridge is 3rd in offensive rebounds
but I wasn’t clear whether they meant in the league or on the team….

Not in the league. He is in the 20th in total offensive rebounds and offensive rebounds per game. Still good

Rebounds
Rebounding has already been mentioned by some commenters but still wanted to bring up some new numbers for Oden.
Greg Oden:
5th in Rebounds per 48 min (among all players with 10+ minutes per game) – 16.9 RP48
1st in Rebounds per 48 min and per game (among rookies with 10+ minutes per game) – 7.7 RPG in 21.7 MPG
Nice to see that one of the most important parts of his game took almost no time to arrive.. it will only get better. Przybilla continues to do a nice job.. coming in at 11th on the same list.
