Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

This is our team: What a difference 7 years can make

It's December 7, 2008. In December 2001, Sports Illustrated gave us this priceless article, among many great anecdotes chronicling a Blazers charity event that took place 7 years ago to the day:

On the morning of Dec. 7 the Portland Trail Blazers gathered outside their arena to serve breakfast and distribute Christmas trees to families in need. It was clear that Rasheed Wallace would rather have been anywhere else. The team’s best player and co-captain, Wallace spent most of the 90-minute session speaking on a cellular phone, the hands-free device dangling from his right ear, and, like most of his teammates, he checked his pager incessantly. When a Blazers employee suggested that Wallace wear a Santa Claus hat, he declined, saying cryptically, "I’m a supervisor." At one point a teenager beseeched the 6’11" Wallace for an autograph. "You ain’t got a Sharpie?" Wallace responded. As the kid retreated to find Wallace’s preferred writing implement, the player cursed at no one in particular and yawned uninhibitedly.

Among other timeless quotes like Whitsitt's "I wasn't a chemistry major", the same article contained this statement:

Fourth-year swingman Bonzi Wells is an emerging star, but he hasn’t captured the public’s imagination. Not that he minds. "We’re not really going to worry about what the hell [the fans] think about us," Wells says. "They really don’t matter to us. They can boo us every day, but they’re still going to ask for our autographs if they see us on the street. That’s why they’re fans and we’re NBA players."

And that's not even looking at any off-court legal incidents - and there were many over time. I give people the benefit of the doubt and believe in their ability to change and grow, so today they might have changed their ways and minds. But you see a pattern of statements and actions that made being a fan of this team highly unattractive in December 2001. And so a lot of people turned away.

Star-divide

The present. Let us compare that with today's Blazers and the best player setting the tone. Several fans already shared great stories this year on Blazers Edge about how awesome it was to meet the team after away games from Washington to Kansas City. How much time the players, coaches and others took for them. How fun the fan fest during the pre-season was. Ben shared this little story a while ago, and summarized it for the game preview of the Celtics game:

The best thing people might not know about Brandon is that he pays respect to his elders and takes seriously the idea that he's a role model for younger players.  A quick story: About 2 months ago, there was a small AAU event here in Portland that featured top high school players from Oregon and Washington.  It was held on a Saturday night.  Brandon had just played a preseason game on Friday night.  During halftime of the AAU exhibition -- keep in mind there are no more than maybe 1,500 people at this event -- Brandon Roy (All Star, millionaire, Prince of Portland) stops by to show love to the Washington AAU coaches (Brandon is from Seattle) and to exchange phone numbers with some of the Washington players (he texts some of the regularly).  The whole gym went nuts.  Cheerleaders were posing for pictures, Brandon was signing autographs, the whole nine yards.  Keep in mind this is a Saturday night and he just flew home from 2,500 miles away that morning.  He could have been anywhere.  But Brandon is the kind of person where that gym was the place he wanted to be more than anywhere else in the world (more than his couch, more than a club, etc.): to thank the coaches that helped turn him into a star and to help the younger guys realize their dreams. That's Brandon Roy.

You say pictures say more than a thousand words? How about these from a recent community event similar to the one described above in the SI article seven years ago (the annual harvest dinner in October). Players looking like they wanted to be anywhere else? No! We don't wear stupid hats, we are important? No! Talking to common people is beneath us? No! We are millionaires that have little time for young fans and prefer to be on the cell phone instead? No! (Well, millionaires yes.)

Apart from the current team (roster) probably being more talented and thus able to entertain more and win more in the future, I will be infinitely more happy about this group of people just for how they conduct themselves and appreciate the fans and community ("Make it Better"). Watching them grow and succeed over the next years will be a lot of joy.

Thanks to everyone in the Blazers organization from the top down and the bottom up for changing the culture of this great team so fundamentally. Thank you so very much. What a difference seven years can make.

Thank you

For reminding those of us who believe in our team. That our losses are just a bump in the road to the future.

More pictures?

I took the photos from the “Harvest Dinner” right from the Blazers site out of a longer slideshow:

Is there any doubt Travis is especially great with the little fans? (photos by the Portland Observer)

And like I wrote above, I don’t doubt that some guys on the 2001 roster were good people at the time and/or are good people today of whom you could find pictures with smiling faces during a charity event. But as a whole the organization was lacking and sending all the wrong signals, and that has dramatically improved.

Go ahead and post or link your own examples if you want.

Still, Shaq was dominating in his rookie-year harvest dinner.

Of course, Bellinelli just KILLED it in the Las Vegas Summer Feast, so maybe that doesn’t mean anything.

That Bonzi Wells quote was hilarious stuff.

Admittedly, though, I’d probably hold the exact same mindset if I was in his position, for random people being bothersome in public and asking for autographs would also bug me. Of course, I’m a pretty standoffish guy.

only back then?

I boo him louder than any guy in the NBA right now. I’ve had him look back at me during two different games. ever time he got up to get in to the game I was usualy the first one to boo at him. I remember one time he got taken out of the game in the fourth and I yelled, “No Worries Bonzi, Rick just wants a smart player in the game” and I had good enough seats for him to see me say it. the other time he looked at me was when he was on Sac and I told him that he was ugly “Hey bonzi, you’re ugly” when he was inbounding the ball and he looked back while he still had the ball in his hands. it was kinda a highlight of the game

I normaly don’t get my jollies out of yelling at players, I just dont like that jerk! plus he used to play real well against us, and Im not taking credit but he didnt play well either of those games. ;)

It's almost as if karma is in play w/ Bonzi...

…in the years since that infamous quote, his personality (as much as his play) has probably cost him millions of dollars; that free-agency fiasco of a couple years past may well have been due to his (and his agent’s) arrogance regarding his importance as a player. There’s a phrase, coined in honor of another public figure, which certainly applies to Bonzi: He’s all noblesse and no oblige.

On the other hand, I’m rooting for someone like Shaun Livingston, a talented player and seemingly a really good guy, who lost a shot at a big payday because of a freak accident. To say nothing of the current Blazers’ roster, who, despite their youth and inexperience, exemplify just about everything admirable about modern athletes and who display few, if any, of those off-putting qualities that marred this team’s rosters in the very recent past.

by Modal Rounder on Dec 7, 2008 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

agreed

it is interesting how every team seems to send Bonzi packing aftere about 2 years, seems to be usualy for a less tallented player too.

Well put Norsktroll!

This whole organization has done a 180…its truly amazing how quickly this has happened!
Outwardly looking in it seems like ALL our players are approachable and humble people and that goes for the whole staff as well. Once again our great franchise is back to where it once was and lets give Paul Allen credit where credit is due…..he made this happen!

Great post!

Thank you Mr. Allen HUGE WIN TODAY!!!!! GO BLAZERS!!!!

This is great.

Great post. On a great subject. I agree this is an amazing turnaround of this organization. The pictures definetly say a lot, and what they say is good. I’m proud to see that and proud to be a Trail Blazers fan. The good on the court yes, but this is good off the court too. Good team, good players on and off the court. Times have changed and for the best, and my attitude on the team has changed with it. I got behind a great team.

Great Post.

The only post Drexler, Porter, et al players that I really respected were Sabonis, Pippen, and Steve Smith, because I thought they were professional, and if they hadn’t been surrounded by a bunch of jerk offs…could’ve brought a title to portland. But I am glad they didn’t because it will be so much sweeter when we win one with this roster. Especially if its the celtics we are playing when we do it.. :) Of course it will probably be the Knicks with Lebron…

I could not agree more......

tmundal, you are right on i.m.h.o. Thing i look back on with the Drexler era blazers is that top to bottom (till we got cliff robinson, he was and still is a huge jerk) they were all great quality people, Buck Williams, Jerome Kersey, Terry Porter, Mark Bryant, Wayne Cooper, Danny Ainge(while we had him) all great character guys and talented in there own ways. I feel much the same way about this team. Top to bottom they REALLY are something to be proud of as fans. They could be at 7-15 instead of 15-7(honestly before the year 7-15 seemed more probale than 15-7) and i would still be very proud and still cheer just as hard.A great example would be my Seattle Seahawks, we are 2-11 but (for the most part) they are all good guys so i have the same amount of support for them as when we went to the super bowl a few years ago. I have been a life long blazer fan and i never would have thought i would have distain for my team but our jailblazers made that happen and then some. I probly say it 3-4 times a day “god my blazers are doing so good this year” and it goes two fold really. They ARE doing awsome performance wise but im allmost as happy to have a good bunch of guys to root for as i am the 15(so far) wins. If someone would have told me when we lost G.O. in the first game of the year and lost badly to the lakers “dont worry, you guys will be more than fine. your gonna be 15-7 after 22 games” i would have told them they smoked crack. I would have been more than happy with .500 much less first in the division and second in the conference. I realize it is very early but we could not have hoped for better so far. GO ZERS!!!!!!
