KG Barking at Bayless...
I saw somebody else asking if they had the video of Garnett barking like a dog at Bayless last night. I looked and couldn't find one so I went ahead and cut that part out of the game and posted it. If you watch right after the Celtics score Garnett gets on all fours and barks as the blazers inbound the ball. The best look at this is when they cut to the celtics player walking back down the court, you can see KG barking in the background. Man he is such a punk. I wish somebody would make him shut his big mouth one of these days. As far as the barking goes ... I have noticed that my female dog tends to bark more than the male one ... so maybe KG is just a female dog? ;-)

Thanks for the clip, even though the cameras didn't catch much. I tried to find a photo of the incident, so far no luck
But here is another one I would like to call “You might have scared my teammates a bit. You did not scare Jerryd”:

I did, but his antics would not really scare me and should not scare a grown NBA player or even cause him to lose his focus
Everyone should be aware that KG can’t and doesn’t want to control his emotions by now after so many years in the league.
Could you give him a technical for taunting for that? He could claim it’s his defensive stance or something. If he repeats it too often, maybe the league will fine him or suspend him for a game. I don’t think that makes him a dirty player.

He's not a punk
He’s handled the zero playing time role pretty damn well so far. He’s always up cheering on his teammates. I haven’t seen him get down on himself yet. He seems to stay into the game, each and every time.
Personally, I think he realizes that there’s a lot to learn, and he seems to be soaking it up.

Great Pic!
Bayless has heart. I liked how he took it too the competition in summer league, but I wondered how it would translate to the games that matter. Judging by last night, dude plays fierce in all situations. It will take time, imo, for the results to be consistent, but as long as the approach stays the same, Jerryd is going to be the real deal.

I just have to disagree...
Could you give him a technical for taunting for that?
Absolutely Yes.
I don’t think that makes him a dirty player.
I KGs behaviour does not make him a dirty player then there is no such thing.
KG is so dirty if you spread some seeds on him, and then watered him he would end up looking like a Chia Pet.
The roots would grow several inches before they made contact with KG.

by any measure you could possibly come up with, Bayless’s play has been terrible this year. Terrible. I understand its difficult to show well in a few garbage time minutes, but the Celtics game was the first time Bayless even looked respectable out there. When its his time, he’ll play and I think he can be really good.
Arguing for him to get Sergio’s minutes right now, though, is frankly absurd. For all of his faults, Sergio is the best passer on this team, and it isn’t even close. He is leading the entire NBA in assists per possession.

And when he does
it will probably be Blake’s minutes, not Sergio’s. Sergio is better with the second unit, Bayless will be better with the first.

no, limited as in
shoot first point gaurd on a team with to many scoring options for that,
uncreative passer,
bad ally oop passer,
suffers ticky tack fouls, and seams turnover prone.
and yes, competent defender suggests limitations. look, the fact is that bayless has not demonstrated the ability to be a COMPLETE point gaurd, so wut. hes good at some things, but, like blake and sergio, thats about it. ALL of our point gaurds have a limited skill set

He is a rookie!
who has played an approximate total of 45 seconds in the NBA. there is nothing on the list that suggests limitations to his abilities (maybe with the exception of his defensive ability), so much as inexperience and making adjustments to a new speed and size of basketball. There is no reason that Bayless wouldn’t get better at passing, or refraining from fouling. As far as shoot first? he was the main scoring threat who played as a two in college. of course he was shoot first.
I don’t buy the limited skill set argument still.

If he hasnt played that much
how can we even tell what his skill set at the NBA level is? Obviously something is limiting him right now as Mcmillian plays rookies, but is not playing him.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
by jonestr on Dec 6, 2008 8:27 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
There are two different arguments being made here.
I was objecting to the generalization that Bayless has a limited “skill set.”
You are bringing up the perfectly valid point that Jared’s skills are really untested at this level but he may not be totally ready for the big time yet, because… well we don’t really know why, but I’d bet it has nothing to do with limitations of his skill set.
“Mcmillian (sic) plays rookies.” True. He plays Oden who was a number one draft pick, and the most coveted center in a decade. He plays Rudy, who is not a rookie anymore than Sabas was a rookie. And he plays Batum, because the real starter is injured and Travis is garbage at defending 99% of all NBA SFs.
The comparison is inapposite, because Bayless is a rookie rookie. he does not come with any of the fanfare of Rudy or Oden, and he does not play in a position where there are manpower deficiencies; he is playing behind two capable vets.
Bayless showed last night that he will be fine, but it does not immediately change the pecking order.
We got rid of this young guy back in the day, because of his limited skill set, which we never got to see because he rode the bench for 4 years. I’m having trouble remembering his name… Oh yeah, Jermaine O’Neal.
Bayless needs to get minutes. the skill set is there, and Nate will play him eventually. Between B-edge, and KP, one of our PGs is going to get moved, and it aint gonna be Bayless.
I heart taxes.

exzactly
rookies tend to have a lot of potential, with a limited skillset. thats not to say they cant improve. im not arguing that hes not, or not gonna be a prolifik skorrer, or that hes not quick or kant handle the ball, but that hes not a complete point gaurd, hes “in the making”. he has the potential, but thus far has displayed a limited skillset, its not a big deal, hell likely be really good.

Proven team leading ability?
I love JB’s potential and think he could be real solid in the Tony Parker type of PG role, but he hasn’t “proven” anything yet. HS is completely worthless compared to the NBA, and “leading” an Arizona team to a first round loss in the NCAAs while getting forced into a subpar game is hardly proving anything. Summer league is so ridiculous it doesn’t even count. Even Diop could average like 18 ppg in SL.
The guy will be good, but he’s far from proving anything.

Don't mistake trash talking for toughness
KG is obviously a great player, and he is obviously a passionate and tough player.
My issue is that he’s also a punk trash talker, and many give him a free pass by equating his petulant behavior as passion or toughness. Secondly, he’s no friggin’ Charles Oakley. Those who put an elbow in his chest will atest that he’s more Dirk than Rodman. He’s a tough player, but not a tough guy.
As we saw last night, and with Calderon this season, he often goes after perceived ‘easy’ targets. And I can see how his fans would say he’s simply getting into the head of his opponents.
As a detractor I’ll point out that over the course of his career, KG has often cowered in big games, especially when faced with tough big guys who didn’t take his crap. He has a long list of playoff failures from his tenure with the Wolves. If not for Paul Pierce putting the C’s on his back last year, Boston doesn’t win the title. In fact, KG was practically pulling a playoff Chris Webber disappearing act in big moments prior to the Finals.
I bring this up, because I think our loss last night had more to do with Boston’s team defense, and our lapses in transition D, than our own Blazers perceived lack of toughness
vs. Boston’s toughness as epitomized by KG.
On Dec 30, I hope to see KG bumped, tugged, pulled and greeted with hard fouls in the paint.
But more importantly, I expect to see our transition D improved, better team rebounding, and more fluidity on offense.
As a parting gift, Zaza’s head tap against KG in last year’s playoffs:

A lot of guys that played back in the 70’s, 80’s and even early 90’s would have put KG right to sleep for stuff like that. Charles Oakley would’ve given Garnett such a knuckle sandwich that KG would be looking for weeks trying to find where all his teeth went! Anybody here think Mo Lucas would’ve allowed that? Malone? Anthony Mason? Bill Laimbeer? He’s lucky he plays in a time when the fines are SO steep for shutting someone up it’d take 5 years of my salary to pay it off!

The problem isn't so much KG, but the double standard
if you’re going to crack down on any hard foul and give guys flagrants any time a big collision happens, fine, but at least T up blatant things like KG. If that’s allowed, if the refs don’t police that, then players should be able to, but since any attempt to do anything about it would most likely result in an ejection and a suspension, certain guys can just do whatever they want.
But thank God the refs T-ed up Greg for hanging on the rim. What an affront to the game that was.

I really hope that wasn't written by someone from here
everyone should know that fans of a team will defend their players as long as they play for that team. This isn’t limited to one particular player. Find a Giants fan that wouldn’t defend Barry Bonds to the bitter end of his stint with the team. Now, I’m not trying to equate the two, but I’m saying that fans always see the best in their players (when they are winning). There weren’t many rumblings about the bad dudes on Blazer teams until they started losing.
Do I like the way KG handles himself on the court? No, but he’s the emotional and defensive leader of the best team in the NBA right now and what he does isn’t against the rules. I don’t know what the whole barking deal is about, but it will stop when teams start blowing by him on the way to the hoop while he’s on all fours. Until then, any fan going to a celtics blog to write about KG’s “antics” is simply going to come off as a whiney fan that can’t take a loss.
I don’t know who it was written by, but I suspect that it wasn’t a celtics fan as the poster claimed. I just really hope it wasn’t a Blazers fan. I would say that overall we seem to be fairly well respected on opposing teams blogs, but we won’t be for long if we get a reputation as a whiney fanbase.
Now that I got that off of my chest…..Go Blazers…..Crush the Raptors!

I'm a Mariner's fan, and I'll defend Barry Bond right now.
He’s the best hitter to ever live, and it was criminal that after posting an above average year in 2007 that he wasn’t able to land a job this year. Most of the “clubhouse distraction” claims by the media are brought on by the media being a distraction and making a circus around everything he did. I wish no ill will on Barry Bonds, and I still hope a team will give him a job somewhere next year.
Every time I see Kevin Garnett play, while I always root for someone on the other team to punch him in the jaw, or just fight him. While I saw him taunting Calderon, I was wishing one of the Raptor would have run up and leveled him. If someone is being that big of a D-bag on the court, someone just has to stand up and sock him.

I’ve read many books since and watched as much on espn classic as I can, I just love watching that Boston team play, poetry in motion. Also huge respect for Red and what he accomplished, a feat that will never be done again. I have followed the C’s as long as I’ve followed the Blazers, just not nearly as closely though. Availability to media being the main reason. Is it OK to follow two teams on opposite sides of the league? --
In my main post I was venting as a lifelong Celtic fan who is frustrated with KG and tired of defending his antics. Celtic fans in Boston don’t have to defend KG like Celtic fans in other cities. I was in no way trying to be a “Whinney fan” whose team just lost. If anything I’m a whinney fan that’s tired of defending KG. I’ve stated many times that the Blazers were beat by the better team and rightfully so. My post could have been written much better but I was venting and was a bit fired up. I wish I would have spent more time explaining where I was comming from but still don’t feel as though I came off as a whinney Blazer fan.

that was BS, but complaining about it won’t do anything…
well except help you vent:
the fact that Oden got called for a techie for hanging on the rim but KG swinging all the way around the rim in the second half, and this dog bs was not called was absurd, just because the game was over for practical purposes doesn’t mean sportsmanship should end, generally that is when it begins!

I can't imagine bayless being scared of any dog
that stare is more intimidating than any dog I have encountered

Another infuriating moment from the video
After KG does his barking routine, Bayless calmly goes down the floor and nails a jumper right in front of him. Then while the ball is being inbounded, Rondo goes up to Bayless, gives him a gratuitous shove, then receives an inbounds pass.
The Celtics are the kings of the meaningless, gratuitous shoves. Witness KG every time he is within five feet of LMA.
I’m glad I’m not on the Blazers… because if I was, KG’s face would be disfigured by my fist.

thanks
I wuz the one who asked for the clip. Thanks for putting it up.
KG’s time on all fours: short but bitter. I’m a goofy guy, but that kind of mean-spirited shennanigans makes me mad.

At the Celtics Blog
I was surprised to see that this is a habit of KG’s.
OK, I guess, in retrospect, I’m not that surprised since it’s KG but it does point out the fact that apparently the League has chosen to tolerate this behavior. And now it’s up to NBA players.
So not only has PTB allowed this to happen with no confict… but so have other teams. No knees to face yet.
I think the key here is simply to win. McMillan, I recall, said post-game that players began to get emotional and away from the team-oriented offense in order to show up the taunting Celtics.
Mental toughness, to me, is being able to stick to a plan and win in spite of the taunting of opponenets.
I promise you one thing: the Celtic Nation reaction to the dog barking would have been vastly difference had the Blazers miraculously pulled off that win after getting within 13 pts w/ 6min to go. The message boards and op-ed pieces in Boston will do the Blazers work for them in that scenario. Kind of like the vilification of Spike Lee when he was taunting Reggie Miller.

I think it's disgusting
I’ve never seen such a great player disrespect the game so much. I really don’t think KG was this way in Minny. Sure, he talked and pounded his chest, but not nearly at the level he’s shown over the past year and a half.
