Junk Drawer: Blazer "Vent" and "Extend" Thread For Boston Loss

This is a "vent & extend" thread for the Blazers loss to Boston tonight.  Feel free to express your "vent" below, followed by who or what you think should be "extended" in the player rotation or team offense/defense.

Please note:  Some comments may not be 100% accurate, as this is only one game.

Vent:

Channing Frye - You cost us the final 3:00 min. of the second quarter.  Your errors sent the momentum into Boston's pockets and they ended the half on a 14-0 run.  Not even the Bush-White-House has done something this bad.  Maybe you missed your real talent and should've gone on this tour??  Your air-head ballerina play where you jumped up in the air and then decided to drop the ball was the worst play any NBA player has made.  Further, you made things worse by fouling some Celtic on the other end who made the bucket.  Even Stan Van Gundy on ESPN said that was the worst 24 seconds of NBA basketball he's ever seen.  Further complicating matters, your teammates (Steve Blake and Rudy) decided to copy your ballerina move.  You embarrassed us in front of a national audience.  I can't stand your preppy attitude towards basketball.  Get aggressive.  Block shots.  Rebound.  Help on weakside defense.  Just move your body!!!   Lastly, letting Kevin Garnett dunk on you with about 2:00 minutes remaining was perhaps the biggest letdown of all of your "depressions."  We could've cut the lead to under 10, but you we're out on the three point line with your Kodak camera taking pictures of Rajon Rondo.  Get your head in the game!!!

Blazers Transition Defense - Boston did a lay-up drill tonight.  We looked like the older team.  They fast-breaked us to the willy nilly.  Nuff said.  No excuses here.

Extend:

Jerryd Bayless -  You're the reason this game became respectable.  You should be in the normal rotation.  For saving us national embarrassment on national TV, I give you the game MVP honors.  Now I finally see why KP drafted you.  You should be given at least 12 minutes a game.

Ike Diogu- This guy deserves more PT.  He should at least take Channing's spot (at least until Martell returns).  He played an excellent game against Chicago a few weeks ago, and doesn't make as many bone-head errors as Channing.  You play with patience, and it appears that you actually think before you act.  Great job.

All in all, thanks to Bayless for making the boxscore look better.  I appreciate this more than anything else tonight.

Channing

had a bad game, no doubt. But come on dude. This Blazer team, a lot like last years team, is all about outside shooting. They are better this year, and get more offensive boards, but they still rely on 3pt shooting to win. Until they can get easier inside hoops, and some fast break points, they will lose against the best teams. The Blazers lost as a TEAM, not becuase one of our bench players was terrible.

Ummm...

A team is composed of players, so some players certainly contributed more to this outcome than others… I think Frye’s turnover and foul was the key transition of the game. From that point till about 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, we were lifeless.

No excuse for Frye…did you hear the guys on ESPN?? They tore him apart.

Frye had a horrible night

Like every night, the guy is just way too soft. He’s the softest player we have BY FAR, and he’s playing selfish basketball lately. I love the guy off the court, but he needs to be riding the pine. Our wins lately have masked this problem, but tonight it was obvious.

He's been given

way too many opportunities with Portland over the past 1.5 years… I’m surprised he wasn’t packed with Jack or instead of Jack during the summer trade to Indiana. He’s been given way too much PT for what he contributes…

I'll be surprised if the

coaches keep going to Frye… he’s got to earn those minutes…. i really expect to see either ike in toronto or an even tighter rotation

I would honestly rather see Ike or Shavlick out there.

Not that they would play better, but we should be fair and give them a chance to prove themselves before deciding to stick with Channing.

What about 2-11 from 3?

What about Rudy or Blake or our teams MVP B-Roy? Channing sucked….bad, I agree, but to say he cost us the game? I just don’t agree, but you are allowed (by law) to have an opinion, even if it is wrong.

by bad karma on Dec 5, 2008 8:18 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I didn't say "cost the game"...

I said “key transition.” The distinction is that this transition became so large that the Blazers couldn’t overcome it. There were many transitions in the game, but this one was fairly large… feel free to disagree with me on it being the “key”, but I’m hard-pressed to find another one that was so clear… Van Gundy even said on ESPN that Boston loves it when players make silly mistakes because it gives them added confidence…

Webster

did you see him, just sitting there? I am sick of it for one. He didn’t even hit 1 shot all game! Webster cost us the game, and the shot at the playoffs!

by bad karma on Dec 5, 2008 8:29 PM PST up reply actions   2 recs

Didn't you hear???

He had a minor ache on his left foot…

He made it clear how important it was to take his time, and make sure that he doesn’t disturb the team chemistry…. i think he could come back anytime and play at least 10 minutes…. perhaps the 10 minutes we needed tonight to close the gap.

I've been sick of watching Frye

long before this game. Even in our wins, he’s been our worst player getting minutes. He’s forcing J’s and shooting tre’s every time he touches the ball. He is not playing in the system and is playing selfish ball, trying to get a contract.

I think you're right...

I believe he’s up for contract renewal at the end of the year… i’d let him walk, and if he wants the cheerleading chair he so desires, give it to him – who cares?

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 8:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yep.

Channing can Keep Portland Wierd as our 15th man on the bench. Shavlick deserves playing time at this point. He can shoot and not make as many bone-headed plays.

by Bust a Bucket on Dec 5, 2008 9:46 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i thought about Shav too and wondered whether he

would be better suited up and take channing’s spot…

all i got to say, the blazers cannot resign Frye this summer… we already took martell, which i think is a “mixed” move at this point (i.e., don’t know how it’s gonna turn out) – but Frye has no positive stock for this club yet this year.

who can you call out?

start with the Celtics suffocating Defense. They gave the PTB a serious lesson in why defense wins games. To point fingers at which Trail Blazers played worse is duplicitous and unfair. There’s a lot to be critical of in examing why we got torched, but I for one stand proudly behind our guys win OR lose.

He'll have to take Blake's minutes probably

He brings different things that Sergio does and we still need what Sergio brings. I wonder if they could become the 2 headed PG of the future?

by danielfarrell on Dec 5, 2008 8:06 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I suppose that's what the Blazers hope for, a Roy-Rex future

It would be just good to find him some minutes this year to see what we got and get him some (positive) experiences. No need to instantly take somebody’s place or minutes. But I hope the talk about just throwing him into a trade stops. Even if his long-term future might not be with the Blazers, the kid is way too valuable to just give him away this year without taking a chance.

The people who need to know

already know what we got, they don’t have to find him some minutes.

He won’t be traded unless part of a deal to bring in a quality PG or a star SF. They aren’t going to just throw him away, he’s too good.

He’ll play more when he’s ready to play more, and not because fans want to see him.

I actually didn't watch the game tonight not because I thought we'd lose

but because of the way I thought we would lose. I swear the blazers are gonna give me an ulcer one day and although I’ve watched every game up to this point this season, I just couldn’t do it tonight. Not with KG and co on the tv. So instead, I just read through some of the comments in the game thread and from what I gathered…pretty much what I expected. Refs allowed a lot of “defense,” KG shoved Broy with some “defense” ALL of our forwards were afraid of the “defense.”

I am a little surprised to hear about some of the coaching errors however and looking at the boxscore it appears Rudy had a terrible night (not that anyone had a GOOD night). So I guess thats a wrinkle. Bottom line is, the blazers can’t let a loss like this screw up their mindset. I think a game like this CAN be good. For instance, you’ve clearly pinpointed some weaknesses on the team that otherwise was going undetected or at least underreported. Channing seems to stick out. Lack of transition game/defense. Oden shrinking in every major test this year so far (c’mon big fella I know you’re gonna get better but please show me something spectacular). Don’t know how you instill “fire” but I would think the coaches have something to do with it.

Can someone make sure that the blazers don’t embarrass themselves every time they play Boston please? I’m debating whether or not I’ll watch the one in Portland.

Brandon Roy: 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, drives us to a win. I don’t have to say anything else. You already know the story. The way he gets to the hoop is poetry. How he gets that open is a mystery. He’s the leader and heart of this team and it’s translating into wins right now. That’s all there is to say.

Lots of good points here...

I think we’ll all have ulcers after tonight!

The weakside, off-the-ball defense (along with the transition) on this team is awful. It was as terrible last year as it is right now…. they should hire a defensive specialist. Who knows, maybe it’s poor scouting reports. Ray Allen ran laps around us tonight. How old is he??

The games at NYK and Wizards also demonstrate this, along with others.

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 8:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I can't stand it

when people talk about how tired we get on the road or on back to backs or how we get beat down the floor or can’t play the transition game. we are the youngest freaking team in the league! You can throw Raef out, gimme a break. How are we not running circles around these guys!? Maybe Nate needs to up his conditioning tests in preseason camp because it doesn’t seem to be working.

Seriously

I can’t stand watching Frye play. It’s been that way for a while…….he’s softer than soft and lately, even during our wins, which help mask the problem, he’s been jacking up shots and playing selfish basketball. He looks like he’s playing for a contract, which he is.

We truly needed to foul somebody HARD tonight and it never happened. Nate had to have been telling the troops this, but nobody, even Pryz, who I thought would do it, got the message. It was infuriating watching them get easy layups while we had to work hard for every shot, getting fouled hard the entire time.

It was a repeat of the game last season, in Boston……exactly what I didn’t want to see.

I can agree

it’s pretty close.

Having Roy play point is nice and all in the fourth, when he can slow it down and turn it into a game of effiicient possessions, playoff basketball. But it just doesn’t work for me for the whole game, it gets almost ridiculously slow.

but our softness

makes me long for at least one player who isn’t afraid to touch somebody else. I really though Oden would do that, but so far, all his fouls are ticky tack, and mostly on the offensive end or in loose ball situations.

You know we do have Ike Diogu

who is only a 3rd year pro – he plays pretty well when given the opportunity and seems to have a whole lot more toughness than Frye – not sure why they don’t play diogu more…

I watched Diogu a ton in college. He’s not the best defender, but he’s certainly not afraid to mix it up. I ‘d be down with him getting some of Frye’s time.

I'd pin that one on the coaching staff, for sure...

I’m not sure if there playing favorites with Frye, but he should’ve been pulled… it was completely embarrassing…. I was embarrassed. Then the KG dunk on Frye at the end – the guy is washed out.

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 8:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I can answere that one

Diogu, in practice and in games, has played better. In basket ball, you try to win the game, and Channing gives the Blazers a better chance of winning on a consitant basis. Channing may be as bad as you say, but what does that say about Diogu???

by bad karma on Dec 5, 2008 8:59 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Diogu

He isn’t a scrub. During the beginning of last season, in Indy, he was scoring nearly 20 a game before he went down with the calf injury and fell out of the rotation. The guy can play. Frye isn’t bringing much to the table at this point, besides shooting 20 footers.

Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game

I just think he’s been given too many chances, and I’m not sure how anyone can argue against this point.

we are trying to “show him off” to raise the trade value. If thats the case, I don’t think its working.

He's certainly the "jarret jack" of this year's squad...

problem is that other teams want every other player on our squad besides channing frye, so this makes it difficult. Other teams know he’s weaksauce. Anybody over 6’4" could guard him – anybody.

Here comes the trade ideas...

the trade ideas emerge after the team gets schooled (by the NBA Champs.) Reminds me of the Pavlovian response Boston fans have to the “Stand and Make Noise” prompt on the scoreboard LEDs.

Obviously Trade scenarios are PTB fans biscuit before the drool.

I remember listening to J quick's last chat on oregonlive.com

and he was talking about how he couldn’t understand how Blake was getting trashed in message boards and how fans were calling for trades despite the great record the blazers have built. Well, I don’t know how fanatics can have better foresight than a beat writer but anyone can see that a few of our players work fine against bad teams, but are absolute weaknesses when we’re going up against top level competition. This team isn’t built to be good, its supposed to be built to win championships.

The difference between our guards and their guards (minus broy) is the ability to finish at the rim. The difference between our forwards and their forwards is toughness, rebounding and defense. Our guys will do fine against the wizards and twolves of the league but we will not win a championship as currently built.

Yeah,

that time Rondo had the ball with Sergio guarding him at half court was despicable. Rondo was strutting, cocking his head back and forth, acting like a hotshot. Then, all of a sudden, there’s a high pick and we get burned like bacon.

There are 2 mistakes here.

1- Sergio should never have been playing Rondo so close that high up
2- Weakside defense – where was it??

Our defense is just really bad. Boston didn’t even play well tonight, and we got our butts kicked.

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 8:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, if this were a playoff game?

I shudder at the thought. I mean, think of Denver, Utah, San Antonio, or New Orleans in the playoffs. They up their games to a higher level than what Boston was playing at tonight. I could see us getting swept if we don’t learn from this game (although they didn’t learn from the last game against Boston).

you might pin this on

“inexperience and youth”…. this will be how the press addresses it… however, i think it’s better to pin it on lack of basketball knowledge… there are plenty of smart young players in the league who are able to help defend the weakside and get back on transition defense…. it shouldn’t take 2 seasons to figure this out.

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 8:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

lack of basketball knowledge

Its healthy to vent about frustrations, I understand that, but typically, highly charged emotions interfere with rational thought. Thats what appears to be happening as I trudge through this post vent JD.

Has everyone forgotten how far this team has come over the past few years? Is it all about winning now? Perhaps re-thinking the inexperience issue is worth a second look. The teams who have beaten us have all been more experienced. It takes time to turn the corner in the NBA. It rarely happens overnight, much less in one season. The PTB are loaded with talent, albeit very young talent. They can play, flat out. They really deserve to have fans who stand right beside em after every game, to pat ’em on the back when they win, and to give ’em a hand up off the floor after a loss.

I feel you're making an excuse for last night...

even Van Gundy said there were certain “plays and players” who had no excuse for making some things go the way they went – all were asking for is some accountability, or improvement in some areas… Portland fans should demand a better performance. I don’t care how we lose, but we should lose with our heads hanging.

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 6, 2008 9:16 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

but how can you set the timetable on how long it takes to learn from mistakes?

You have to give a grace period to some of these guys to allow them to grow out their mistakes. Part of the issue is also that the blazers are doing so well record wise right now that it might be a bad idea to mess with the rotations. However when Martell comes back and the adjustment period begins, perhaps we will see some changes in other parts of the lineups as well, as the team would have to reintegrate Martell back into the rotation anyway.

WTF were our guys up on Rondo out at half court? The guy is fast, but can’t shoot a lick. Did they get a scouting report? And if they really wanted to crowd him, at least go UNDER the screens.

Rondo isn't a perimeter threat

Sergio has to recognize that and play accordingly. Good point.

by Bust a Bucket on Dec 5, 2008 9:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Why not go under the pick-and-roll on him?

Why guys kept getting rubbed off, leading to Rondo attacking the rim, is beyond me.

Play 7 feet off him and dare him to knock down a couple Js. If he does, adjust.

Why would anyone NOT guard him that way?

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

This is what's so hard to figure out about this team...

it seems like they really need to learn how to play team defense. Weakside/off-ball help is horrid.

Frye was playing KG all the way out to the 3P line. Three times KG ran right past him, which resulted in dunks twice, and a backscreen for pierce another time who then made a lay-up…. This is one example of many….

At the end of the day, it comes down to moving your feet on defense, talking, and thinking.

we need another player besides roy that can take it to the hoop and finish! Travis can’t. Rudy Can’t. Blake can’t. ect. I believe Bayless will be the answerer to that but I don’t know if he is ready. I was for no trades but if we could get someone that could take it to the rim and actually finish I would give up Trout. I think the future will be Bayless with Sergio bringing a change of pace of the bench. sorry blake but we have plenty of 3 pt shooters.

The Lakers aren’t going to go quietly into the night this year and I’m not sure the Celtics will be playing at championship level next year. Don’t know what’s going mentally with this team. I was really surprised they didn’t make a run on Boston to start the 2nd half. the starters were completely demoralized last night

once Boston began to tighten the clamps and extend their lead, our guys lost all focus. They didn’t repsond to the challenge presented by a superior team. You could see they were getting distracted by the referees, they weren’t playing team ball, they were afraid to pull the trigger on open shots, and they began playing into Boston’s style of play. Our guys got totally psyched out.

I still remain convinced this is exactly what the team needed to have happen— reality.

by bow4meow on Dec 6, 2008 7:00 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

well, sorta

Mentally, Boston took us out of the game. But it was definitly chicken before the egg here, as it was their play that had the effect of taking the PTB out of what they do well, and accelerating the Celtics own level of confidence. As Boston imposed their will on our guys, we lost focus and they ramped up their confidence. It was a learning experience for sure. The silver lining to last nights cloud is Nate has a coachable group of guys who will learn from last night, regroup, and come back fighting. Bank that.

Since We're Venting, Any LMA Haters?

Okay, hate Channing, hate Sergio… whatever. These are bench players, easily replaced, and probably not long for the team.

But I was freakin’ screaming at LMA tonight to do something useful. Anything! LMA looked soft, he was getting murdered on the boards over and over again. First he was taking fadeaways; then he wouldn’t take shots; then he wouldn’t even hold the ball. He was so lazy on transition. Good grief… he’s supposed to be one of our “big three”… and he was completely awful. And he hasn’t had a spectacular season to begin with.

So, there’s not really an option here. Hate some Blake, bring in Sergio. Hate some Sergio, you can always call for Bayless. Want small forwad? Take your pick! You can have Batum or Outlaw or Rudy or just chill and wait for Outlaw.

But Jiminy Christmas and the Enshrined Blessed Goosefeathers of the Pillow of the Virgin Mary, what happens if LMA actually sucks? We start Frye? Diogu?

So much depends upon LMA actually being good. And he’s not! At least he hasn’t been yet. And tonight he was awful Just awful.

So I’m venting because I’m so mad!!!

I just wanted someone on the team to get angry about this. Someone. Anyone. Lay a foul down. Do something. Anything! Show me you care!!!

Felt like I was watching the team from 3yrs ago all over again.

Is anyone else out there just even a tiny bit peeved at LMA?

…He quickly is getting a rep as very soft. I saw many lay ins from Boston that he didnt even try to go for it or rotate. Reality Check

So many fans keep referring to our Big Three—or at the very least, our Big Two.

But while Lemarcus is certainly better than the average NBA forward, he’s not better than the average starting NBA power forward. He’s no better than an average rebounder and average defender with a below average inside game and a nice shot. We can get nice shots, however, at several other positions. We need toughness, an inside game, and rebounds from LMA’s spot, and we don’t get enough.

When you combine his relative softness with Channing’s—which deserves all the critcism heaped on it here—you end up with a big part of the explanation for last night’t embarassment. We don’t have a Maurice Lucas, or even a strong facsimile. Garnett is no longer a strong offensive rebounder, for example, but you would not know that from watching last night’s game.

Our weakness at power forward, quite honestly, is as glaring right now as our weakness at point guard. In fact, Blake is contrbuting more than Aldridge and Sergio is contributing more than Channing, who is contributing—literally—zero. By any measure of performance—Hoillinger, Wages of Wins, or simple observation—Channing right now is at or slightly below zero.

And for all the Travis non-fans out there, he showed last night that at least he can be on the court for games like this. Channing hasn’t for several weeks; last night was simply his most obviously bad game in a series of non-games for him.

Nice guy, perhaps. Fun. And at this point, clearly not a player.

So yes, peeved at both of them. The 4 spot is not a strength of ours: underperformance, nonperformance and consistently too soft performances, even on better nights.

Our six best players right now, in order: Roy, Pryz, Rudy, Oden, Blake, Outlaw, Aldridge, Batum and Rodriquez. Honestly, and with no intent to unduly disparage someone, Frye doesn’t count. Webster gives us a legitimate two-deep; right now we’re nine deep, with the possible emegence of Bayless, and with it, the final goodbye to Channing, barring some near-miraculous turnaround.

I don't get the Frye hate

He played 14 minutes and 20 seconds last night and he has gotten most the blame for the loss. Had it not been a blowout, he would have been lucky to get 5 minutes last night because LA would have been in the 4th quarter. He sucked last night and so what? Just about everyone sucked last night.

Frye isn’t out there shooting jumpers and 3 points because he decided it was what he wanted to work on last summer. I’m pretty sure when he met with Nate after the season, that Nate told Frye what his role would be this year and what he should work on to get more playing time. I imagine at the time that Nate didn’t expect too much from Rudy regarding 3 pointers so he told Frye to work on replacing James Jones’ role.

Everything that went wrong last night is fixable with the roster we have now. Joel and Blake are the oldest guys on the team and their game improved from last season. Everyone on the team has room to improve.

by tominhawaii on Dec 6, 2008 11:40 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...a little too much on him over this one

I think it’s been building up tho…I mean I was losing it after the NY game — had already had enough…couldn’t hardly watch since then…I think it is because of what heISN"T doing as much as it is about what he is doing…

That and our glaring need for some hard nosed play from our"power" people — 3 rebounds total from the 4 spot is not OK..so he needs to establish some sort of inside presence…or AT LEAST a high post presence….but he seems to just have no idea how to play his position…

by LetsBlaze on Dec 6, 2008 11:47 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm an admitted homer, so take this with a grain of salt.

I trust Nate’s judgment and if Frye is playing instead of Ike or Shav, it’s because they’re not playing better than Frye in practice. Look how fast Batum moved up with his play. I think playing time isn’t decided by the coach, it’s determined by the players play.

by tominhawaii on Dec 6, 2008 12:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nate is weird in this way...

some players move fast and receive playing time quickly, others don’t… remember though how much Nate struggled seeing Batum in the starting line-up? I wonder if the other coaches help him see this….

At the same time, none of us or the media sees the actual practices, so I’m sure he builds a case out of that context to a degree… however, poor play on the court shouldn’t be rewarded – I think

players are weapons

let’s blame nate a little for not using his weapons properly tonight:

-on oden’s T dunk, he should have stayed in the game! let the big fella play! is Pryz chopped liver!?

-brandon lost his poise- a rare occasion, but he’s allowed to sometimes, Pierce should have gotten a taunting foul for all his poop-talking at the foul line. nate should have rested brandon earlier instead of forcing him in right after he recovered from that little injury, save him for the 4th!

-nate should have realized earlier in the game that our PGs were no match for Rondo, and should have experimented with putting Bayless in in the 2nd quarter, earlier though.

-lamarcus!?!?!?

-channing should have been taken out after nate knew KG was coming back in – we we down 11 with 5 minutes, put in a fresh unit of diagu, joel, outlaw, batum, and bayless. no shooting guard because the guards couldn’t shoot tonight anyway.

the team needs a 2nd fiddle...

i agree with your comment above that we have no big 3… i’ve said the same thing for awhile. We have one consistent big-time player in broy, but that’s it.

The thing with LMA is that he does have the potential. He has a real nice running hook shot that he rarely uses. His post-up move is the same each time. If you force him left, when he’s on the left side of the post, he’s finished. He never makes this type of shot.

by TheOdenator52 on Dec 5, 2008 9:19 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

Nate's inflexible hand is why.

He’s really tight in trying dictate his flow on the game. Batum is the greatest story so far in this early season and he played only 18 minutes tonight.

did we watch the same game?

I only noticed him twice. The one shot he made and one time when he didn’t get back on defense.

I know he does a lot of things that don’t show up in a box score, but he was nowhere to be found tonight… just like everyone else.

I think Boston did a great job of limiting the Blazers passing game. The guys who are normally open for wide open shots were never wide open.

The reason we were outscored in the second quarter wasn’t because Outlaw came in… it was because we flat out didn’t score a single point for over 6 minutes. Batum isn’t the guy to score heavily.

Just a bad performance all around.

I beg to differ...

I don’t think he’s displayed a fearless attitude yet.

He’s shown competitive fire. And he’s shown emotion. But not fearlessness.

Case in point, other than his open lanes to the rim to dunk, how often is he asserting himself, willing himself to the basket? Never. He occasionally does a jumper from the line and sometimes dribbles out. Never does he attack.

He has fear alright.

it was not his playing but his attitude once he hit the bench

that was a little bit of a let down, you could read his lips “this is bull-expletive”, and he really just lost his trademark cool; that affected the team, thus effecting the overall team dynamic (except bayless, who is a stone cold killa)

but there were so many ymca things about this game, brick 3, celtics lay in, repeat until dumb foul, celtics hold impromtu free throw and lay up clinic.

Bayless

I loved what I saw from him tonight. That is how you earn more minutes, don’t complain and make the most of every opportunity you get. His ability to get to the rim at will of the dribble is second only to Roy’s, and he doesn’t back down from a challenge (e.g. Garnett trying to punk him and Bayless responding by going right back down the lane and earning free throws). Plus, I think his lateral quickness will eventually translate into someone who can lockdown quick PGs on D, which coupled with Batum’s ability to play the SM/SG types, will allow Roy and Rudy to focus their energy on the offensive end/darting into passing lanes when paired with one or both of the stoppers. Most encouraging element of tonight’s game by far.

Now that sounds SICK on the defensive side! He may do quite well playing Kobe. Good thought.
PG Pay Up (Rex’s name in Gunnin’ For #1) SG Batum SF Roy PF get a Banger at some point or play Oden at PF © Zilla. That would be a great team in some situations.

for once I agree with the parent remark

although Im incapable of hate, its important to recognize many “fans” have used this thread to assign blame to almost every player and the coach for losing to the best team in the NBA. How fair is that? As a member of the Loyal Order of Trail Blazers, its my sworn duty to support our guys — win or lose. Sure it was an ugly game, Sure we got totally outplayed, manhandled and clearly whalloped by a better team. So what? Its certainly clear who was the kid at Christmas that whined when he opened up his present and it wasnt what he asked for, so he made life so miserable for mom & dad that they went out and bought him what he wanted to appease his selfish soul. (and for once Im not pointing the finger at Gilligan.)

It's too late to agree with me, I've already changed my mind.

by bow4meow on Dec 6, 2008 7:13 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It's not blind support, it's just support for our favorite team and the players on our favorite team

If you had a son on a crappy basketball team, would you spend the ride home from another loss berating him on everything he and his teammates did wrong, or would you support him, say “we’ll get them next time” and give him feedback so that he can improve his game?

I’d be willing to bet that half the fans on Blazers Edge would start a blog called, www.mysonsaauteamsucks.com and threaten to put their kid up for adoption and adopt a more athletic son, if his game didn’t improve.

by tominhawaii on Dec 6, 2008 11:51 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Relationships within family are different than those

outside, right??

But to take your example, if Channing Frye was on my son’s team, then YES =)

If my son wasn’t giving any effort, yes, I would talk to him, and tell him to either play with some effort and aggression or find something else to do b/c the opponents will keep beating you if you lack effort.

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 6, 2008 1:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Blind support?

That is preposterous. Its understandable to be dissapointed in last nights performance. The PTB did not play well, but at the same time they got beat by a better team. Taking the time to belittle our guys over irrelevant circumstances makes little sense to me, asides from the personal gratification some attain by pointing out the obvious negatives in the game. The team is going to survive. They are going to mull over this themselves, and don’t need my piling on to remind them they got their behinds kicked up and down the floor all night.
More then likely the team is going to do some much needed soul-searching and reach a better understanding of just how much more they need to improve in order to be the best team in the league. Thats not a put-down nor is it blind support. For that type of accusation, I can only conclude misinterpretation of my own personal devotion to the R&B.

It's too late to agree with me, I've already changed my mind.

I dunno ....

everyone i was watching the game with last night, thought there were some key breakdowns that led to the disaster…. i find no problem voicing those issues on this forum…

again the original post reads:
Please note: Some comments may not be 100% accurate, as this is only one game.

I hope Frye makes the All Star game this year – okay there you go. There’s my full support for a guy that one night earlier wrecked the main breaker in the ship – disagree or not I don’t care – there are shifts of momentum in basketball, and this was a major one for the game last night – find a different explanation and we can discuss it… refusing to deal with problems on the team is silly to me.

after talking with you on this site... i do think

there is a balance between focusing on positives concerning the team vs. individual criticism…

I think this is the issue KP has with managing this thing – it’s tough to pinpoint who to move where and what to do… i think this season, he needs to ask the question, what pieces do we need to get over the hump? He might not know until July – and even then, anything done is a risk….

Ah, c'mon! That's what venting is for!

And that’s why I like this thread. It’s the land of idiotic trade suggestions, anger, over-reactions and everything else you feel after something like this. Don’t deny people that.

This way it’s contained and serves the very legitimate purpose of catharsis. I vent here against LMA so it doesn’t leak its way into more sophisticated posts in calmer times.

Don’t want to read the hate? Skip it!

I don't mean to rave about a Northwest Division rival -

but how good is the Jazz offense? I mean seriuosly. I’m so jealous of their system – constant ball movement and cutters flashing from the weak-side into the lane. I was in awe last night watching them just dismantle the Raptors. Easy buckets? The Jazz get easy buckets by the bushel. They might very well have the best offense in the league. I think it says so much about their system that they can just plug in guys and win games without Boozer, Williams, Okur, and AK47, who have all missed signifcant time this year already. Granted, we just played against one of the best defenses in NBA history – really – but the contrast was so stark . . . the Blazer’s have a ways to go still. Easy buckets. Easy buckets.

A road game in December does not mean much...

either way.

After the Allstrar break, when the best teams turn it up another notch, then we will see where we stack up. If we kick it into a higher gear, then we will know we are ready for prime time, if not than we will struggle to get into the playoffs and will get blown out in round 1 if we do make it.

Portland still needs to show itself that it can handle the physical intensity and pressure of big games. However, they won’t get that opportunity until March and April. A game against Boston in December is not the same thing.

Did that ballerina move by Channing convince you he SUCKS? Because I have known that since last year. I want him and Travis OUT. Rudy did some stupid complaining too. Oh and Nate decided this game was a good 1 to try the “rudy and Travis playing together” rotation… it doesnt work just like that last time Nate…duh… Blake plays horrid defense. BROY was trying to dislocate his shoulder in the 2nd qt. LMA just floated around the perim like a pretty fairy and never established any offensive flow. He let Garnett blow past him like 800 times in transition too. Batum , where are you? 1 three and I missed it. Probably played ok Defense but whatev. He wasn’t scared of Garnett b/c he cant understand him.

Ahhh I feel so much better.

If someone will get them, it would be Travis. Are we fine with that?

I think he would be better on PF than on SF except against the most bruising ones (and those are rare among backups) with his speed and athleticism. He is not a really good rebounder, but mostly not because he doesn’t have the ability but because he stands around after a shot goes up waiting for one of the bigs to take it. If Nate put him next to Nic/Martell in the second unit and told him to focus a little more on that, he could do good things for us there.

Was anyone else really impressed by the way he played? He came in and tried to get the emotions back on the Blazers’ side. He was taking it to the basket, and trying to score.

The time he got called for traveling, he was looking to throw down a monster dunk. You could tell he wanted to be a leader and get the team going again. Those are important things, and it’s impressive that he looks to do that off the bench.

People have forgotton how skilled he is tho cause he has had a string of injuries dating back to hs..he is at full strengh for the first time since he was 17…at that point he was th #1 ranked HS player in the country…

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/college/recruiting/news/2001/07/11/brick_nike/

"….his team won a national AAU qualifying tournament at Belmont Abbey, beating the Raleigh Heat and Shavlik Randolph, 59-49.

Randolph is the most highly sought-after player in America and has apparently narrowed his choices to Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State.

"We went head-to-head a couple of times," Minter said of the 6-10 Randolph. "He blocked my shot once but they called goaltending.

"He shoots the ball real well and his footwork is great for his size."

"6-10 Raleigh (N.C.) Broughton junior power forward/center Shavlik Randolph wound up setting tournament records in scoring (87 points in three games) and rebounding at the Red Cross-Rotary Roundball Classic in Charleston, S.C. "

“Shavlik Randolph, a 6’10” junior at Broughton High in Raleigh is such a promising talent that USC has sent him hundreds of recruiting letters, as many as 120 at a time. Maybe if the Trojans cut down on their stationery and postage costs, they could afford to give new warmups to their walk-ons, correcting one of several injustices (including being told to sit behind the bench) that led to three of them quitting the team in January…. 3/12/01 S. Fixing those holes will take some time...

If all we get out of this loss is:
1. play Bayless
2. add Ike
3. add enthusiasm and fun = better outcome but still a loss.
Our team never believed that they could
win that one. Definitely not prepared for that test. Grade = D-
Next time will be equally scary as this Boston team has our number.
Go Blazers!

The idea of my comment was not so much that Amare could be really available, but that loyal Suns fans think their team sucks after a few losses

And believe Amare might not be “The Man” that brings them a championship, so they could be better off trading him for another forward before he leaves them in free agency for nothing. At the same time a lot of people on Blazer’s Edge are questioning if our power forwards are good enough for the playoffs and would readily take Amare or Bosh. At the moment, there are stories and polls up on Bright Side of the Sun like “Bench Amare”, “What’s wrong with the Suns”, a “Shaq Retirement Clock”… While we dropped our games against them and thought Amare looked really good. It’s all perception and perspective.

very true...

I think we could use him, but think we’d need to give up LMA – i don’t think the two could coexist

trust me, i know exactly what time they start - it will actually tip at about 7:13pm

It’s my nightly ritual to watch the start of the East games during my last hour work. I’ve been killing time on here all day and can’t wait for the opportunity to have something else to give my attention to. It’s been a dark day at BEdge.

Channing is the worst transition defender

and weakside defender on our squad…. he is what you call “OVER-RATED.”

This is one of those times I wish “Trader Bob” still was with us.
