Bayless?

Why do you think Bayless was in there for that last posession? To stare out a turnover?

Yeah I have no idea.

Come Out, Come Down, Face Out, Be Gone
Break down, build up again
Here she comes with a hand to lend
Get out of bed just to dive into the night
Torn lips and I feel uptight
Come out, Come down
Fade out,
Be Gone
WORD UP. STAY. FRESCO.

Nate already has messed up pretty bad...

Not bringing Oden back…
Leaving Frye in that long (after his start)…
Trying to press this team early on….
Having players crash the offensive glass and giving up transition points…

Nate… GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME!

Cannot stand watching Kevin Garnett & Paul Pierce's faces play basketball.

I am dead serious. They are both ugly and more importantly, they WILL NOT SHUT UP. They are that annoying-ass guy on the playground who won’t shutup and is not THAT MUCH better than everyone else.

Yeah, the Celtics are good, get over it. Ahh, they piss me off. Sorry, I just had to sound off a little bit….

Even if we lose this game, they still have to visit the Rose Garden and then we’ll see who puts up and who shuts up.

I am pretty sure Kevin Garnett will NEVER shut up, but at least I can hope right?

don't usually comment durin games

but I just have to vent about how badly we’re getting screwed by the refs. yeah yeah, “the celtics are being more physical than us.” well that’s baloney how does a team manage to play more physically yet never be called for any fouls? and KG’s foul on roy was dirty. he should be suspeneded, but we all know there will be no repercussions. they’ll protect their “big 3.” the only consolation is that eventually we won’t even need the refs on ourisde cuz’ we’ll be dominating with SKILL. not with dirty plays or trash talk. props to anybody who reads this whole rant.

by hollywood robinson on Dec 5, 2008 6:28 PM PST up reply actions

Honestly it was only the last two minutes of the 2nd that the wheels fell off the cart.

Before that we were playing them pretty evenly (Frye excluded). Things fell apart very quickly.

Same deal, Blazers being bullied

I don’t understand why someone doesn’t knock KG out, if I was as big as he was my fist would be down his throat.

The refs are pretty bad tonight too, although some of that is Boston being the aggressor. Hope Portland shows some fire the second half.

by RipCity on Dec 5, 2008 6:29 PM PST up reply actions

whatever, who cares

I didnt really think Blazers would win anyways.

Its like LMA thinks that KG wont get in his head, so he shoots those jumpers quicker and plays some D, but he does not rebound. Our team is to young to understand everything, and not think what to do but know exactly what to do and do it on automatic.

hard to get back in it when you tell your guys “take the ball to the hole”, Roy does, gets raped on 2 straight possessions, and the refs just watch.

Man its not refs

Blazers dont have the BALLS to stand up to Celts. And as much as I dont like to admit that its true.

We dont have anybody that can create. So they collapse on Roy, and then have perfect rotations.

So thats why we need a point guard

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

i can count at least

10 points we were robbed of, and at least 5 calls against us, i seriously feel it would have made a difference, might not win us the game but it would have been more competitive and who knows what might have happened

THE BRIGHT SIDE

We were due for a “not ready for primetime game”, the type that keeps ya hungry.

A win woulda been way overblown as “arriving”, when we got a lot more work to do.

This loss should be expected… I just want us to not wilt like this. But, we got more work to do to become as good as we can be… and we ain’t even close to where we’re gonna be.

Let's be honest.

Yes, we all hate the Celtics. Yes, they are DBs. Yes, the refs are not giving us the benefit of the doubt. And yes, it’s frustrating to watch.

But the refs didn’t beat us. Neither did Nate’s decisions. The Celtics beat us. They played better defense, grabbed offensive boards at key times, and got under our skin so that we tried to take them one on one. And we played terrible transition D.

I was a little worried about this game with the way Brandon and some of these guys have been talking before (and during) the game, because you could tell they wanted to shove it right down the Cs’ throats. That’s not our game, though. One on one will not get you good looks against this D, and that’s what happened after the first quarter. This is a good example of why this team just needs time to play and learn.

I will say this though…it is VERY hard to play defense as well as Boston unless the refs let you get away with a lot of grabbing, bumping and leaning. We were definitely not given that slack tonight.

I usually avoid game threads 'cause they're too much work to follow most of the time.

Yet, that notwithstanding, I’ve browsed this one tonight ‘cause I’m watching the game — as it’s thankfully on a national cable network — and am interested to see how the Portland Trail Blazers would perform against a legitimately elite ballclub.

Well, it’s obvious that the Trail Blazers have a long way to go before becoming a championship contender.

Aside from that, though, it’s annoying to read people whine about the officiating — which, in my objective opinion, has been fairly even tonight — as well as rag on one of the best analysts in the game, Jeff Van Gundy, rather than correctly place the blame on Nate McMillian’s inability to reign in the mid-range shooting fest, LaMarcus Aldridge’s overall ineptitude, the porous defense at every position except the pivot, et cetera.

Oh well, that’s just my observation.

but yeh, other than a couple calls, reffing hasn’t been THAT bad. The game where the dood held Rudy’s jersey at the end was the only game this season I’ve really been upset about in terms of officiating. Tonight was bad, but it wasn’t horrific.

In any case, it’s clear our play is what lost us the game, not calls.

The title for best garbage time player ever

goes to the Junk Yard Dog himself—Mr. Ruben Patterson.

One game we were up twenty and there was like 10 seconds left. We were dribbling out the clock and someone dished it to Ruben. As the other team walks off the court, Ruben drives in and jams it and then puts his mug right in the camera and is like YAH YAH I’M THE MAN! THE BIG HAIRY MAN!

It made Sportscenter, with most of the viewing audience oblivious that the dunk and celebration was after the game was over.

The Blazers have two spark plugs on the bench: Rudy and Bayless. When the offense is struggling, put one or both of them in. When the outside shots are not falling, put Bayless in. He is aggressive. He is that kind of player.

Most of the Blazers looked pretty weak out there tonight. Maybe the road trip was catching up to them, but they are too good to be down by almost 30 points.

BUT, I also like learning experiences, and this gave us a great one.

LA/Boston > Us. Knowing that, we work on what we need to work on.

by Mortimer on Dec 5, 2008 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

How do you 'work on' fear?

We had no confidence out there and were afraid to take it to the hole. A rookie who has more splinters in his butt than anyone else on the team was the only one driving hard.

OK. Sergio had a couple of decent drives into traffic. Everyone else? Meh.

As long as we bounce back

Remembering that you are not where you need to be, and the hard work that entails (and renewed focus), should be a good thing.

I really didn’t think we were scared to start the game, not like in LA or last year against Boston.

We sucked, but didn’t look like scared kids. Just sucky kids.

I think he is a banger but Millsap is better

Bass can dunk it, and he has a workable midrange shot out to maybe 10 or 12 feet. But the Mavs value him as a backup, so like I said he won’t be easy to get and Cuban cares at least as little about money and luxury tax as Allen.

In September 2005, three months after the Wizards selected him with the 49th overall pick in the NBA draft Blatche was shot in an attempted carjacking that took place early one morning near his home in Alexandria. The bullet pierced his chest and arm, and he appeared in only 29 games as a rookie.

On August 2, 2007, Blatche was charged with sexual solicitation in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. after allegedly soliciting sex from an undercover police officer. The solicitation charge was dropped after Blatche followed court orders and attended a day-long seminar for men who solicit prostitutes. 13

Blatche was arrested on June 4, 2008, in Virginia on charges of reckless driving and driving on a suspended license for the third time. Blatche was going 86 mph in a 70 mph zone in a Mercedes on Interstate 85. He was released on bond. 4

Question for bball vets:

How much of our bad defense was us, and how much was things the Celtics were doing to our youngins?

by conspirator5 on Dec 5, 2008 7:52 PM PST reply actions

My assessment

Bayless needs to be playing more. If he is at all part of our future. Besides roy he’s the only other guy who can consistantly drive to the basket. I also like his attitude. He might be cocky but I think some confidence is a good thing. Nate should of started him against Rondo since he’s the only guy fast enough to stay with him.

The refs need to start calling all the fouls that teams are getting on Greg. It’s a joke, especially that last one.

KP needs to make a trade to improve our defense. Too many soft offensive players at the same position.

You can’t let him get that cheap shot on Roy and then act like its OK. The thing that annoys me about this game is that nobody came after KG after he almost injured our franchise player on a very dirty play. We need to respond big time to that and we didnt. Clock that SOB in the face with an Oden elbow.

…KG recognizes Bayless as a threat, psychologically. So he has to go in as the aggressor to establish the pecking order.

Celtics ball movement was good at times, but that was usually opened up by poor rotations and our perimiter defense seemed to disregard the fact that Rondo is faster than any Blazer.

The defense made mistakes, Celtics just abused them to the fullest.

If he just a bit tougher on defense...

…and not so slow, and not prone to SO MANY DUMB MISTAKES (like, really really low BBIQ mistakes), his spread-the-floor jump shooting fits with Joel in the 2nd unit. As does Trout’s.

Right now, I prefer Trout at PF, and Frye fighting for minutes again.

by Mortimer on Dec 5, 2008 8:22 PM PST up reply actions

Even though he's smaller

I think he is a better PF than Frye, so I agree with ya.

Yeah, he’s like a poor man’s Gerald Wallace or Josh Smith, with a much better jumper and a lot less penetration with the ball.

I say he’s equal in rebounding to Frye, but the numbers might prove me wrong. He forgets to box people out all the time, and I’m not sure with Outlaw which problems are solveable with experience and which are just Outlaw being Outlaw and won’t go away… certainly a lot of his problems are of that nature.

As a 15-20 minute PF backup who gives the enemy match up problems and more minutes if he has it going, I think Outlaw gives us a lot more than Frye AND gives us more as a PF than as a SF, where he causes no match up problems.

Plus, playing him at PF means he doesn’t handle the ball at all, which he is horrible at, and puts him (be default) in rebounding position and he isn’t as likely to forget to jump as he is as a SF.

I don’t think Trout will ever, ever get the most out of his athleticism because he isn’t a very focused dude, nor a guy who works in the offseason, but he can do what he do and as long that’s what you expect and what you’re looking for he can really help you.

Just not a starter, nor a guy you can rely on.

I prefer him as a PF.

by Mortimer on Dec 5, 2008 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

yeh no question

Outlaw > Frye

But it’s what gets us the most value. If we can move Outlaw for a BIG piece than I guess you gotta’ do it.

I dunno, I’m not a big trade guy myself, so I’m not going to worry about it too much.

That is really hideous
--jscot

by prezofdeath on Dec 5, 2008 8:33 PM PST up reply actions

I'd move either one and be ok with it

I feel more emotionally attached to Outlaw because of how long he has been a Blazer and because he’s such an innocent and nice kid, but scoring is the EASIEST thing to get in the NBA and it is pretty much all he does.

I would trade either in a move that helps us and have no problems with it.

by Mortimer on Dec 5, 2008 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

Who gets the shaft once Marty is back?

I say it’ll be Frye. Outlaw moves back to PF, and plays less unless he has a similar bounce back like last season.

by Mortimer on Dec 5, 2008 8:32 PM PST up reply actions

Verdict

It could have been worse tonight. A LOT worse.

Down the stretch, we made them put their starters back in to seal it. Moral victory there. Oh joy.

Seriously, though, they are the champs, and they showed why tonight. Hopefully, we can learn a lot from the film of this game. This should also be motivation for our guys not to get complacent, and, as Nate says, to “stay hungry”.

In the meantime, we’re still first the in NW division, and 2nd overall in the west. A win in Toronto gives us a 4-1 road trip, a winning road record on the season, and the hope of brighter days ahead. If our team can learn to play team defense the way Boston did tonight… (and to get back on transition D) Oh man, look out for the Blazers in the years ahead!

Played two great teams

And had two stink bombs. Let’s see how we fare against Cleveland. I will take us against the other 26 teams though. Just no legs whatsoever and you need those against great defensive teams. Plus no effort. When you see the Celtics just bust out on double teams and bust out on three point shooters and compare that to our effort it isn’t even a contest. That’s the only thing we should take from this game. Effort on defense.

We weren’t winning this one, at that point, sorry to say. We had our best performing guys of the night out there (as Nate always does), and they just beat us. No shame in that. They’re the champs. Give them their props tonight.

We’ll see where they are 2 years from now, versus where we are. Just keep that firmly in mind.
