Junk Drawer 081205 -- It's the End of the World as We Know It Edition

Really, either way, win or lose, tonight's game is going to change everything... Either the happy Wish Upon A Star idyll of the 6 game winning streak comes to a crushing and demoralizing end or the magic carpet ride goes supersonic with a Blazer win over the world champions on their home ice. The smart guys in Las Vegas have it as Celtics by 8, so don't get your hopes too high, carpeteers...

Okay, no junk drawer at 9:00 AM, so that means you have to suffer this fool again. Too bad for you. Start one earlier tomorrow...

Time to grab the analog news distribution device for some topics o'blather...

Item 1. November layoffs the worst in 34 years. I saw a teaser for that online this morning when I was signing onto AOL to get my email, so it must be true. Gimme a D... Gimme an E... Gimme a P... Gimme a R... Gimme an E.... Gimme an S... Gimme another S... Gimmie an I... Gimme an O... Gimme an N... What's that spell? (Nobody can ever accuse me of not being a cheerleader for the economy...)

So am I being Chicken Little about this, or are you getting bonked in the head by falling concrete, too?

Item 2. Auto execs plead for $34 Billion from the feds. They promise to build fuel efficient cars this time. Honest. They were just kidding when they cashed in pumping out SUVs because they were so profitable per unit... They're REALLY SERIOUS THIS TIME, if only they can have $110 from every man, woman, and child in America, pretty please, with sugar on top...

Item 3. (Yes, Twiggs, I'm getting to it...) Charles Barkley predicts Blazers make playoffs in the West! Dec. 4, 2008. Yes, I heard it myself... The question was asked: "Which team does NOT make it to the playoffs -- Dallas, San Antonio, Both of These, or Someone Else." I think Chuckie-baby said "SA" and since there are clearly 9 teams vying for 8 slots in the West at this point, that IMPLIES that he predicts the Blazers will make the cut. Only last week he was predicting failure! See, bad wins in NY and Washington DO mean something positive nationally!

Item 4. Oregon *uck "Coach-In-Waiting" (and waiting and waiting and waiting?) Chip Kelley agrees to $7M/5 year deal as head of the yellow and green football machine. Too much? Not enough? Who's to say? I reckon that means that Mike Riley needs another raise -- can you help, Mr. Knight?

Item 5. Canzano asks: "Are Blazers ready to play at next level?" Well............. are they? Your thoughts.

My own view is simple. Home teams win in the NBA when they aren't back to back, they aren't missing key players, and they don't overlook their opponents. So, if the Blazers lose -- it tells you nothing at all, actually, other than the fact that they lost to the Celts in their home gym. Now the matchup in Portland -- THAT you can learn from. Witness the way that Atlanta took 'em to 7 games last year, each team winning all their home games... The Blazers don't need to "break serve" in a 1 game series, they just need to keep it close and not melt down like they did in LA...

Item 6. College football is coming. If UCLA beats USC, OSU backs into the Rose Bowl. THAT would be a catastrophe -- Penn State would steamroll a demoralized Beavo squad... So here's to a 40 point Trojan win and a sound thumping of Notre Dame in El Paso! (Which is the definition of a fun game, anyway...)

Item 7. Dirk scores 37 for the Mavs in 3 quarters, then kicks back... Heck of a shooting guard that guy is... Is there a more coordinated 6'11"+ player in the NBA? Let's hear it...

Okay, now a poll.

t

Poll

Narrow Blazer win ...

Yes, make fun if you like, but I think we have a good chance of getting beat, and an equally good chance of stealing this BIG ONE. It would be a bank-job, but I’ve got to go with the homer instinct on this one.

This is the kind of game that you can really make hay with in the jersey contest...

………………………… because we’re all so smitten with Our Blazers that we ignore the obvious fact that kitties do not do well put into bandsaws… Okay, maybe that was too graphic… Ummmmm, goldfish do not do well in a toaster oven……

HOME TEAMS WIN IN THE NBA. World Champions are not World Champions by mistake… Teams that are pumped up for big games do not look past current opponents…

It’s difficult to CONCEIVE a Blazer win in this one. You can just whip out a sharpie and put an L on the schedule…

I understand what the Ducks are TRYING to do by locking up Kelly, but it seems like a plan destined for catastrophe...

………………………. Coach B. basically has a lifetime contract at this point, unless I’m missing something. He continues as Head Coach as long as he feels like it and then moves upstairs. That’s a heck of a vote of confidence, eh? Uncle Phil must REALLY like him…

What happens if the program goes in the tank in two years?

It’s a bit unfair since I think I have invested in quite some promising companies that are posting good number yet are now going down all across the board together with the rest. But I found that funny. I really ask myself “what product would an average American/European/Chinese buy/need” before making investment decision, and it often works.

This morning there was some talking head on CNBC talking about how people who invested during the bubbles in the 20s and 50s needed twenty years to make their money back (when in reality most of them had sold a long time before that). I wanted to come through the TV and choke that guy. Even though I didn’t invest “on top” of the last bubble the bottom of my portfolio is quite significantly down.

I heard a little bit of what the judge said prior to handing down the sentence

she mentioned that it is very rare that so much of what was entered as evidence was on tape. Any set-up theory is likely to be based on that.

by tingeyga on Dec 5, 2008 11:58 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I can’t remember who had the tape but I know two things. If I’m going to rob someone, I’m not bringing a recorder and if I’m about to be robbed, I’m not turning on a recorder unless I knew what was going to happen ahead of time. OJ deserves to be in prison for life, just not for his most recent crime. It’s all pretty shady to me. Like I said, I’m still glad he’s going to prison.

Some states are more lenient respectively "forgiving" and believe that people can change

This left-wing former terrorist is to be released in a month in Germany. He was found guilty for the murder of at least 9 people and the attempted murder of 11 others. Time in prison: The minimum sentence of 26 years. To me, in that case that is way too short. But I’m not really a supporter of death penalties and life in prison without the chance for parole either.

TP to be wiped by Suns?

Does anybody else get a bad feeling about Porter’s tenure in Phoenix? Watching the Dallas/Phoenix game last night they only time the Suns seemed to be making a run it was, “OK now they are playing their up tempo style like they used to.”

Now with grumblings emerging from Amare, Nash and Shaq along the same lines, how long will this experiment last?

I want Porter to suceed. He seems to be in a no win situation right now.

Starting to wonder.

The way the Suns are playing lately, I’m wondering about Porter’s tenure there too. It would be good to see him succeed, but 3 coaches have been fired this year, and based on that and the Suns recent play a 4th is possible being him. Still hope he can turn it around though and keep his job.

Wow. I was reading about the (premature) predictions that the Celtics/L*kers/Cavs

could make a run at the Chicago Jordan’s Bulls’ record 72-win season.

What blew me away was this.

The Bulls’ final three losses of the season came in their last 15 games. The losses against Toronto, Charlotte, and Indiana came by a combined total of three points.

A one shot swing in those games, and the Bulls could easily have gone 75-7, meaning they won a whopping 91.5% of their games. That is scary good.

Is this not one of the more ridiculous things you have heard?
1. The champion Celtics surprisingly lead the league with 39 technicals, 11 more than the No. 2 team (Phoenix). "Our guys are getting chirped at a lot,‘’ Rivers said of the trash talking the Celtics hear from opponents this season. "And we’re responding, so we have to do a better job there. But it’s like I said to one of the officials, ’Don’t give a guy a tech for being emotional as long as he’s not embarrassing you. He’s frustrated with himself.’

Doc saying that HIS players get chirped at a lot? Oh yea the Celtics are just Responding to all of this trash talk, oh the Other teams all start it, every night.

C’mon now that is a load of trash.
