Rudy's Latest Blog Entry - Translated (& Updated)

Thanks for the heads up on the remainder of Rudy's post. I didn't click through to it the first time. The rest of the translation is below, following a link to the source doc:

Thanksgiving Day in Portland

November 30, 2008

Although there are still twenty days until Christmas, the festive spirit is alive in the United States. This is because this week I've been able to live, (for the first time), through Thanksgiving, a very important celebration for Americans. Fortunately, Los Blazers didn't* have a game that day and I was able to be in Portland to celebrate the holiday.

A few friends got together at Sergio Rodriquez' house and we ate the customary stuffed turkey. It was a thing of beauty, especially to experience the holiday like Americans, for whom it is a very special day. Here, in the US, it's traditional on a day like this one to have various sporting events. Although they do play NBA games, the more typical on this particular day is football. Families get together and watch the games together, it's a tradition. There is a similar tradition in the NBA, where they play on Christmas day. Los Blazers have been tapped to play, luckily, at home. We're going to do it against the Mavericks and, (again with luck), I'll have my whole family there, as they are coming to spend the Christmas holiday at the Rose Garden.

Speaking of the Rose Garden, at this point in the season it is now clear that this is one of the toughest courts to play on for any visiting team in the NBA. We are 7 for 7 at home, and we have been visited by some of the strongest teams like San Antonio, Houston, and New Orleans.

The truth is that we have incredible fans. They are knowledgeable and very passionate and, personally, I can't complain. Every time that I go on the court or have the ball in my hands they encourage me and chant my name, and this always gives one confidence. The team is in good form at the moment, but now we have to prove it on a five game tour of the Eastern Conference. It will be a challenge and, for me, and opportunity to get to know a city like New York, where I have never been.

*Editor's Note: Rudy used the "we" form of did not, thus including himself with the team, but it doesn't show through on translation.

I'll post new ones as they come down the pipe. Please note that I've taken some minor liberties with his wording to use some idiomatic expressions where it made sense...

Thanks for the translation...

including the notes. It’s almost too good!

I like the slightly rough translations that sound kinda funny, like if Rudy were to mention Thanksgiving by saying, “I will eat turkey in my face” or something.

You mean like this:

(from his entry on the Houston win)

“The season started with great intensity. The schedule has not thrown a hand and we have prepared a very difficult start, against teams that insurance will be among the best at the end of the season: Lakers, Suns, Spurs, Jazz and Rockets. All teams are very complicated, all with any star that marks the differences. And something that makes it more complicated is the rhythm of racing.”

My favorite quote:

" Each time I go to the stadium or have the ball in his hands and Korean encourage me my name, and that always gives confidence."

That’s what he said about playing in the Rose Garden. Sure, there are more Asian people on the West coast perhaps, but to call all the fans in the RG “Korean”… what the heck.

A ridiculous mistranslation

Note that google translates:

Cada vez que salgo a la cancha o tengo el balón en las manos me animan y corean mi nombre, y eso siempre da confianza.

as

Each time I go to the stadium or have the ball in his hands and Korean encourage me my name, and that always gives confidence.

obviously.. there is no Korean encouraging Rudy’s name. The best I could come up for this one with some help is that when the crowd at the Garden shouts his name, it gives him confidence..

Thanks for the update, Doc! And for the real life translation!!

The word ‘corean’ really messed up the autotranslation.. I think the word is literally translated as chorus like the ’the chorus calls for my name and it inspire me) I guess..

Yeah, “corear” is a verb that means to exclaim in this particular context. Apologies to Ha, but there are no longer Koreans in uniform for the Blazers.

I looked at a couple of computer translations

Mostly because they’re so much fun. One of them referred to the turkey as backfilled instead of stuffed.

Thanks for the real world translation.

Rudy is a PR dream.

He is a great representative for Spain.
Thanks a bunch to everyone who keeps us up to date on all of his interviews for Spain. We Americans care a lot!
I appreciate how open minded he is being about American culture, too. (it is nice to see a European write something that doesn’t insinuate snobbery; not that we Americans don’t deserve it)

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
