Gameday Open Thread: Pre-Game Version

Since this is a big game I anticipate people are going to want to talk about it all day.  To avoid 108 different Fanposts and Fanshots on the subject and to avoid our normal Gameday Thread from getting nuked with 1000 comments the second it opens, we're providing this Pre-Game Gameday Thread.  Talk about the Portland-Boston matchup to your heart's delight all day long right here.  If this gets too full I guess we'll just open up another one!  (Please keep comments on-topic here for that reason.  We don't want to bury everything else at the bottom of the page if we don't have to.)

Well

Last year I pretty much knew the Blazers were going to get hammered.

This year I can see some scenarios where they win. I think that’s a good sign.

I think the most likely of those would be Oden going berserk, drawing fouls, dunking, dominating the boards, scoring 20. The Celtics would have a hard time handling that. If Rudy and Blake hit a couple threes then and Roy and Aldridge didn’t bork, that’s a winnable game.

How does one go berzerk w/o showing some outward emotion?

Do you think the Greg has turned the corner in regards to this? I thought I seen a little bit of this when he came off of the bench for Joel in the last game, but can he do it for consecutive games?

"berserk"

How do we feel about the technical foul question?
If both teams come with the fire, it could be a pretty heated match up.
Does Joel get into it with KG?
Does Brandon step to a disrespecting Celt?
Could be some fireworks out there … or maybe it’s a clean game. Dunno.

I believe 2 games ago...

when i was watching the Blazers game, Roy and someone else got a double technical, and the announcer said he thinks it was the first of Roy’s career? Any truth to that, if so thats dam impressive.

(b. Pittsburgh, Pa., 1 Mar. 1927), federal appellate judge and unconfirmed nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court. Following a distinguished career in private law practice, on the faculty of Yale Law School, and as U.S. solicitor general (1973–1977), Bork was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit, by President Ronald Reagan in 1982. On 1 July 1987, Reagan nominated him for the Supreme Court vacancy created by the retirement of Lewis Powell. After an unusually lengthy hearing, the Senate Judiciary Committee rejected the nomination, 9 to 5; the full Senate defeated it by a vote of 58 to 42 on 23 October 1987. Bork resigned from the court of appeals in February 1988 and became a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.

To be 'Borked'

Is originally a phrase adopted by right-wing political commentators wherein the media and political opponents damage a person’s reputation unfairly for political reasons. Synonymous to the idea of a political smear or the Cointon’s famous “politics of personal destruction.”

However, Dave used it in it’s more modern form to refer to an embarrassing failure, such as that which befell the Reagan administration when they nominated judge Bork. Synonymous to the phrase “laying an egg.”

Borked

The expression “Roy and Aldridge didn’t bork” is written as a past tense intransitive verb in the midst of a future perfect tense sentence, thus rendering it problematic regardless of the intent of the author. Therefore I’m going to guess he misspelled “Borg” which means Dave is concerned that Roy and Aldridge will become semi-mindless automatons bent on the subjugation of Boston Garden.

Brandon Roy: 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, drives us to a win. I don’t have to say anything else. You already know the story. The way he gets to the hoop is poetry. How he gets that open is a mystery. He’s the leader and heart of this team and it’s translating into wins right now. That’s all there is to say.

i'm confident Rudy's fire surpasses KG's

Rudy is one of the only players en los Blazers to show very much emotion after nailing a shot generally, but i love when he gets fired up after nailing a trois; the Celts are going to try to bully the cheeto-covered snot out of him, and then, if he gets angry, look out for his Spanish Coffee!!!

rudy and brandon are the x factors believe it or not (who on the team on the floor isn’t an x factor anyway?). if they can’t harness the BEdge’s hate of KG and manifest it into fantastic acrobatic displays of technical skill, commencing to take over the game at will, we’ll lose.

if blake is the high scorer after the 1st quarter, or at any point after that we likely lose, sorry stevie blakey.

if brandon has 20 points before the 5 minute mark of the 4th quarter we’ll probably win.

if travis gets an assist, sergio hits a triple or floater or free throw, joel makes 5 consecutive free throws, or oden gets 10 rebounds and less than 5 fouls, we’ll probably win.

if nate gets a technical i’m not sure what would happen.

this is kind of weird.

worried

might be getting ahead of myself, but I’m kind of worried about what actually winning this game might entail. expectations would skyrocket even more, pressure to win before each game would increase, all of sudden we would have to be involved in finals talk. I would love a win, I’m just not certain we’re all ready for this. We’re ahead of schedule anyway.

Why I don't like the Celtics:

1) I hate franchises bought with money to win championships – people think Danny Ainge is the NBA’s best GM – he’s not – and also, Doc Rivers is OVER-RATED

2) Rajon Rondo looks like my left pinkie

3) Garnett – biggest punk in the NBA, even bigger than Rasheed – I think he is disrespectful and promotes the worst about the NBA

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 3:09 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not sure Rivers is over-rated

I think a lot of people still think he’s just an average coach, but he was smart to realize that he doesn’t know jack about defense and hired a guy to take that over that aspect of coaching. A lot of coaches would be unwilling to give up that much control. I think the Celtics would have lost to LA last year if they didn’t have Tom Thibodeau coaching the defense.

by tominhawaii on Dec 5, 2008 4:15 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I didn't know this so thanks for pointing it out...

The looming question for the Celtics (I think) is, are they for real?

I’m beginning to answer “yes” to that question, as their record is starting to demonstrate it…. however, questions about them still swirl in my mind…

I just don’t think Doc has what it takes to make them repeat champions… part of the Celtics success so far this year has been due to their location, more than their coaching perhaps.

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 4:51 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think they can repeat

They need to stay healthy and get past LeBron. After that, the only thing in their way is the Lakers. The Lakers are better this year too. If I had to put money on it, I’d bet on either the Lakers or the Celtics as the champs after this year.

by tominhawaii on Dec 5, 2008 5:08 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you'd bet on the Celtics or Lakers?

I take it you don’t invest in junk bonds or internet start ups. Way to go out on a limb there.

by Bust a Bucket on Dec 5, 2008 5:18 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the thing about the east coast

is that there are a lot of talented players, but outside of the celtics, i can’t think of a team where there are at least 2 All-Star – types…. well, maybe Orlando if you count R. Lewis… Thus, you’re right, only Lebron is in the Celtics way, but this goes back to my location argument in the previous post. If the Celtics were out west, well several teams would be in there way, so I think context does play a role here. Also, I feel Doc’s coaching defiencies would be more exposed out West…. strangely, after all i just wrote, i am reminded that the eastern conference has a better record so far this year against the west – which is wierd i think.

I’d place a bet as you mention above, but I’d take a healthy L*ker team over a healthy Celtics team anyday… also, I’d take a healthy Blazer team over both a healthy L*ker and Celtic team. =)

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 5:33 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All-Star pairs

Boston
Garnett/Pierce/Allen

NJ
Carter/Harris (with the way he’s been playing this year)

Philly
Iguodala/Brand

Detroit
Wallace/Prince/Hamilton/Iverson

Cleveland
James/Ilgauskas (has been a multiple all-star)

Toronto
Bosh/Calderon

Milwaukie
Jefferson/Redd

Atlanta
Bibby/Johnson

Miami
Wade/Marion

Orlanda
Howard/Lewis

Washington
Jamison/Arenas/Butler

Doc isn’t the coach for a struggling, young, questionably talented team. He’s fine to steer a ship that has as much talent as the Celts do.

Garnett– biggest punk in the NBA (even bigger than Kobe)– I think he is disrespectful and promotes the worst about the NBA

Garnett gets away with things that only a handful of players would ever get away with because he is among the elite. He taunts, flops, throws intentional elbows and gets in the refs’ faces… yet, he is somehow the posterchild of the NBA. I hope one of our two-headed monster knocks him on his butt tonight.

I think a lot of people don't understand KG and hate him for something he is not

I don’t claim that I really do, since I don’t know him personally. But since reading and watching more about him I’m much less negative towards his antics than a lot of people here seem to be. I think he is just a highly highly emotional guy that had – and in some ways still has – to deal with a lot of “demons” and the heavy burdens of expectations from his past. I hope Greg who is a pretty different character finds an easier and less (self-)destructive way to deal with the enormous expectations placed on him (see the Quick story).

If you haven’t done so yet, read this excellent ESPN Page 2 story from Scoop Jackson written just after the finals to maybe understand KGs inner motivation a bit better.

by Norsktroll on Dec 5, 2008 5:23 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I figure he's just one of the least educated people in the NBA so he doesn't know any better

He went straight out of high school and was probably pampered through that. I doubt he knows how to read. He never had classes for interpersonal relations or had to interact with real people. He only knows how to communicate through grunts, swearing, and yelling. He is basically one of those guys who was raised by (timber)wolves and he doesn’t know how to behave like a civilized being.

His bully story is pretty classic too. He probably got punched out by some kid that he was bullying when he was younger, and after he won the ring, turned the story around and acted like he was the one being bullied.

I don't like when being emotional is an excuse

You hear that a lot, ‘I said those horrible things because I am an emotional person’ or "I can’t help it , I’m hot tempered’. I just don’t see how being an emotional person makes it Ok to act like a jerk. We all have to learn to control our emotions. Perrhaps some people are not more emotional, just less able to control themselves, which seems really childish to me and usuallly ends up being self destructive in the end. He’s a great player but, I just don’t see him getting the respect from his peers that he could have if he didn’t act so childish on the court.

Oden will never be like Garnett because of the simple fact he’s a cool guy, not some A-hole. Just because a guy gets steeped in expectations, that’s supposed to be an excuse for horrible on-court behavior? I think not….

by Norsktroll on Dec 5, 2008 5:51 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hey, Dave...

Why don’t you just open 10 or 20 threads all at once at the beginning of each game day, saving you the task of having to open a new one (usually at half-time) periodically. Then, just like walkie-talkie frequencies, readers can pick the “frequency” they want and do their chatting in smaller groups unencumbered by dozens of other disassociated conversations. This structure would make it easier to chat, combine people of like interests, and make life easier on you. Of course, if people still like the massive “main thread” they can just stay on frequency number 1. In effect, just let “the market” decide.

by blazerwizard on Dec 5, 2008 5:48 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Plus,

Right now, you get about a thousand comments per thread. You’ll double, triple, quadruple or more that with the more evolved structure because many commentors restrain themselves so as not to dominate other users of the thread. In addition, the current “closed loop” doesn’t readily admit of longer comments; it’s virtually all one-liners, and those are fine such as they are. But occasionally, someone wants to express themselves more freely in terms of comment length, and that will be permitted to happen with more threads and fewer comments per thread. All in all, you’ll get more incisive, better quality commentary by opening the loop to more simultaneous conversations.

by blazerwizard on Dec 5, 2008 6:15 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good point. But there's really no time to seriously talk during an NBA game, which is wire-to-wire action...

…………………………. Outside of the pregame (here) or halftime (Tony Luftman jokes are always appropriate) or after the game…

I do think the multiple channels idea is good because it would steer the “Yaay Team!” fans away from the loutish picky grumpbutts like me and several of the other GDOT regulars, resulting in greater peace, love, harmony, and tranquility for those who desire it — but that’s a road not traveled, at this point.

2 things:

1. I think this game will be a bit closer than last year but I just don’t see Portland being able to beat Boston yet. We’re about one year away – or maybe even if this game were in April. That being said, I’m definitely hoping I’m 100% wrong.

2. Anybody else going to the game tonight?

Erastus - on "finding" a VIP pass..

I’m assuming you will be wearing blazer gear so step one is covered…However this is Boston, so be careful, these are vocal peple who enjoy drinking and fighting (ie don’t feed the animals)…

The tickets the team gets are generally 100 level, one section up, from the foul line to the baseline on the same side of the floor as the teams bencches…sooo…your best bet for interacting with people with passes is in the hallways outside those sections, immediately before the game and at halftime..soo..

if you end up meeting other Blazer fans somewhere, make it down there, and the probability of some sort of interface will be higher…

good luck!

Thanks for the tips!

That was pretty much what I figured – good to hear some confirmation.

And, yeah, the Boston crowds have a lot of drunk “tough guys” mixed in. In the past, I’ve found that the key to avoiding confrontation is to simply cheer for your team, without being too obnoxious, and ignore anybody yelling directly at you. It seems that even a drunken fool isn’t willing to start something with someone who ignores the verbal abuse.

I think this one is on LMA's shoulders

If he can neutralize Garnett and not be intimidated by his BS, then the rest of the team can get it done. If LMA folds then the Blazers can’t win.

I want Boston to play well

and us too , of course. I don’t want to beat them because they are missing easy shots.
This game is an exception, the learning experience of playing a great team beats getting the W. Of course we’ll get more out of it if we play well too, 2 quarters of garbage time don’t add to anyone’s experience.

This is why I love Channing Frye

Blazers hungry for payback against Boston

BOSTON — They only played twice, but no team last season got under the skin of the Trail Blazers more than the Boston Celtics.

Kevin Garnett talked trash incessantly. The Celtics’ vaunted defense grabbed, held, elbowed and pushed the Blazers around. And in both games, the Blazers felt like they had the Celtics right where they wanted them, only to come away empty handed.

Inside the Blazers: Roy’s leadership is like his game, steady and solid

The Boston Chronicles, Game 1 at Boston: Blazers lose game but make point

The Boston Chronicles, Game 2 at Portland: A big lead turns into a big loss

Charles Krupa/Associated Press
The Celtics’ Kevin Garnett, grabbing a rebound in last season’s game against Portland in Boston, bullied his way through the night. The question for tonight’s rematch is whether the Blazers will be intimidated any longer. Tonight on national television, the teams meet again, and for the second consecutive season, the first matchup comes at a time when both are streaking. The Celtics (18-2) have won 10 in a row. The Blazers (14-6) have won six consecutive and eight of nine.
Nothing outside of a victory over the Lakers would make the Blazers happier than to unseat these Celtics, for which they share equal parts respect and dislike.

“The Celtics, they irritate everybody,” Blazers power forward Channing Frye said. “At the same time, they are the best. They won a championship last year. We want to be the best. And the way they beat us — we took a lot of things from those games and put them into our own play. Their help-side defense, their intensity, their enthusiasm for each other, and their ability to have three superstars play together … those are all things we are now trying to do.”

Tonight’s first matchup has some similarities to last season’s first meeting. At that time, on Jan.16, Boston was an NBA-best 30-6, while the Blazers had won 18 of their past 20 games. In that game, the Blazers held a nine-point lead in the second quarter, a two-point halftime lead and a seven-point lead in the third quarter before losing 100-90.

In the Jason Quick article today Channing had the following quote:

"In the second meeting, Feb.24 at the Rose Garden, the Blazers built a 17-point lead in the second quarter only to see it turn into a 19-point deficit that ended in a 112-102 loss.

“It was like being at a club and being with baddest chick in there,” Frye said. “Then you turn your head and she’s gone. It’s like, ‘Dang, I should have had that! I should have done this or done that.’ Because we had them. But I think everybody feels that way. That’s why they are the world champs.”

I hope he brings his “A” club game tonight….

this is a win/win or maybe a no lose situation tonight

A win tonight against the Celtics would be extraordinary, for sure. It would certainly open alot of eyes that ordinarily couldn’t locate Oregon on a map of the USA.

A loss, even a beat down, might just be what the PTB need. The Celtics have set the bar, and the young PTB squad must understand how much effort it takes to knock of the champs. One could bet a playoff confrontation with the Celtics is significantly tougher task then a regular season game. A lopsided Celtics victory might be just what the PTB need to open their eyes to the reality of how far they have to improve to be the best in the NBA. Look how the team has played since getting whalloped in the season opener.

This team is young, and development cannot occur without taking a few lumps. I’ll be cheering for team as die-hardedly as possible, but no matter the outcome— the future is OURS!!

It's too late to agree with me, I've already changed my mind.

Things that scare me about the Celtics…
not KG…
not Jesus Shuttlesworth….
not even Paul Pierce….

I however am scared to death of Rajon Rondo’s defense and Leon Powe’s offense in the post and on put backs. That’s it. If this team didn’t have one or the other… I think we could win this one. Those two players with their special attributes are what makes this team truly deadly.

Biggest game of the year so far?

I say definately. I think it will be a lot like Rocky 1. We’ll go the distance, but lose in a split decision. I think the Celts win by less than 5 points.

But then on Dec 30, it will be like Rocky 2, and the Blazers will win by 5-10 points.

(i really hope the game isn’t like Rocky 1 tonight. A win would be soooooo sweet.)

Question - anybody know this?

Today’s Line on the Game (ESPN) reads as follows:

Favorite: @ Boston
Open: -8
Cur: 0
Underdog: Portland
O/U: —

What does “-8” and O/U mean and how do you interpret it? Is this the Vegas line?

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 5, 2008 8:21 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

O/U = over/under on the total points scored

-8 means the Celtics are 8 point favorites.

I make it about 10 — closer if the Blazers pull together, a 20 point blow out if they lose their composure…

"Now with a non-provocative footer!"

by timbo on Dec 5, 2008 8:35 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so is 8 points considered 8 "real" points, as in the final

score being something 100-92 (8 point difference)… or is it on a different scale??

Some Boston people are really buying into the "Blazers are a top 5 team in the league"

more than we are right now.

Gavin told the guy, “Yeah, we’re hoping to be where you are in a couple years” and the Boston dude was like, “Don’t sell yourself short. Oden will continue to improve and you guys could be a good matchup in June. The Lakers are still better, but if Kobe or one of their bigs gets hurt, you guys could make some noise.”

I want the best team on the floor to win.

And I want to see both teams playing at their best.

I think we’ll lose, but how we play and how we lose will tell a lot. I’ll take the win if the Celtics play a crud game, but I really would like to see how we measure up.

In other words, I’m wishing for a play-off level game. Not regular season. I want to see where we stand on that level.

Greg Oden, where posters happen.

I wish this game was gonna be about better basketball

but when you play these guys you can’t just be better, you have to be tougher. the thing I hate about the celtics is that its not completely about shooting, passing, dribbling. Its about head games, pushing, shoving, technicals, and referees. I would say that the refs are gonna impact this game more than in any other game we play this year.

That’s all there is to say.

and the better team

will come out of that with a win.

It’s part of the game. WILL the blazers keep plugging or will they let that effect them?

if they can withstand, they’re the better team.

Greg Oden, where posters happen.

by ratbastird on Dec 5, 2008 12:03 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no thats part of THEIR game.

God I hope the blazers never turn into a team like that. I mean, I want our guys to out-dirty them TONIGHT because hey, KG needs to be punched in the face. but you don’t have to play like that to be champions. Just like the guy who talks trash after a pickup game. Great, you won dude, you don’t have to be a dick about it. Its just not necessary and def not part of the game.

Again, it shouldn’t be the team who can withstand the most elbows that decides who the better basketball team. It should be the team who actually can play better basketball. I mean, if we’re talking wrestling or something I would totally agree with you. I’d rather swallow another butt kicking by the lakers than another physical beat down by the celtics. At least then it would be about basketball.

Garnet needs to be humbled

At some point reaction to the silly tirades of Kevin Garnet must be made. It is a fact that he belittled our team on and off the court in a style as repugnant as the antics of Mike Tyson. His mouth creates a wind tunnel that blows away many of his opponents and his childlike actions make my blood boil. This cannot go on….for the sake of Blazer pride..as well as the integrity of the game.

Would Marice Lucas have allowed that to happen. I don’t think so!

While I do not recommend pugilism as a course of action….a well placed “legal” hit or two may have to be induced in order to gain some respect. Perhaps it’s time Greg lets off a little of his pent up passion and begins to step up against those who would mar the game with clown-like antics.

Batum is extremely important tonight...

If Batum can be effective hitting his shot tonight, I think he could be the key. I think the Celtics will ignore him at the beginning of the game choosing to take away scoring from Roy and Aldridge. Also his defense against Pierce will be extremely important. Guys other than Roy and Aldridge are gonna have to be hitting shots to open things up for our big 2 if we are going to win. Roy and Aldridge can not do it alone. We will have to do 3 things effectively to win. Hit our open outside shots, rebound, and keep the celtics from scoring int he paint. We do those three things it won’t matter how much KG talks…. Blazers WIN!!!

sooooo agree.

Boom Boom Batum needs to show up on both ends of the floor tonight. We know he’ll defend like mad, but if that three starts falling again, it will help A LOT!

I'm here to tell you right now that there is no way the refs

are gonna let our rookie actually play good defense on any of the celtics, let alone paul pierce. I’ll be surprised if the kid isn’t hit with some quick fouls extremely early on. I mean, I hope that doesn’t happen but these are NBA refs we’re talking about.

Please... no Outlaw at the 4 tonight...

There is no way in hell outlaw can guard Garnett. Aldridge needs to play every minute KG does so that we have a capable defender on him.

that will be interesting.

Nate will show what he can do matchup wise I guess. I would hope that Outlaw only plays the 4 when KG is out of the game. Of course, the other alternative is to lockdown everyone else, stay out on the shooters, and let KG go for 30. Like how the Pistons beat the Lakers in the finals a few years ago (when they let Shaq go off and stopped everyone else).

Use your shot to space the floor

more important than the 2 points we get when you swish it is the ability to create space the next time down the floor. Make space, make smart passes when they come out on you.

I really hope

that regardless of outcome, people don’t get too carried away. If we win it, it doesn’t mean we’re going 76-6. If we lose, it doesn’t mean we’re out of the playoff race. I think at this time, we all need perspective and…

Ah, to heck with it! KG’s a whiny punk and it’s time Oden dunked on him, swung on the rim and yelled “ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE BEEZY!” Meanwhile, BRoy makes fun of RayRay for his Celtic-colored nail polish, and Travis nails a three in PP’s face and yells, “Now THAT’S a dagger!” (Too soon?)

Its pretty much a win-win situation for the Blazers...

If they pull off the victory, wow… don’t even need to explain further. If we happen to lose, oh well, its not like we were expected to win anyways. The only negative would ocur is if we are completely blown out and look like we did opening night.
