Brandon Roy ... unathletic?!?
I started reading the recently posted SI.com article about BRoy and after the 4th paragraph I had to stop because something I read pissed me off. I took a look at some fanpost replies and apparently I am not the only one.
About Brandon: "Of the league's young wing players, the 6-6 Roy is among the least impressive athletically ... Roy watches his peers ..."
Over and over people refer to him as being not very athletic and it is very annoying. People make the assumption that just because a guy lays the ball up instead of skying for a 360 jam that he is not capable of the second. Brandon Roy is one of the smartest basketball players that I have ever seen. He knows how to use his body to be a very productive player and I enjoy watching him as much as I enjoy watching Outlaw dunk over top of people. The way the word peers is thrown in there like these "more athletic" people are above him!?!
I am sure this bugs many other people. So I thought I would get it started so we could vent a bit!
Here's a little video to show just how unathletic Roy is! :-P
Also, does anybody have a way to dig up the draft camp stats from Roy’s year? I am curious how he stacked up against other guys in the ways that they evaluate athleticism. Thanks!

Its more style of play than athletic ability
Wade loves to barrel into the lane and collect fouls. Roy slices through the lane but is not afraid to create contact either.
I like Roy’s approach more considering all the injury problems Wade has already had

Wade himself said, last season, that Roy is "a controlled me."

Roys game isnt based on athleticism
its based on outsmarting his defender and always making the right moves due to his BBIQ. I dont think brandon would be offended when people say hes not athletic…bc thats not his game. Hes more slow and methodical.

Roy's athleticism is underrated, for sure.
However, I don’t think its unreasonable to suggest he’s less jaw droppingly athletic than the likes of LeBron and Wade.

Who isn't
Bron and Wade are probably the most athletic players in the league, and Bron might be the most athletic ever to play in the NBA.
Your right though, Brandon has subtle athletisicm, not really explosive.

I think
Roy likes these type of articles, because it just helps keep the myth going that he is “unathletic”, which helps him suprise defenders. The good ones know better, but there are many players in the NBA who don’t think he can because he doesn’t very much, he uses that false sense of security against these defenders to cut right to the rim with ease.

EXACTLY
I predict that we’ll never hear of Roy correcting someone when they call him unathletic. On the contrary, if it were in Roy’s power, I’ll bet he’d go back and erase all records of that 40" leap from the pre-draft camp! He WANTS people to think he’s unathletic; that’s part of his edge. As I wrote the other day, Brandon Roy is the most deceptive basketball player I’ve ever seen—in ALL respects. And deception is much more effective than a frontal assault.

Let's start some other myths.
Greg Oden can’t dunk. You can drive on Joel all night. Let Rudy shoot open threes. LMA is still in a slump.

Best crossover in the game
Roy picks his spots but its pretty much untouchable.

I'm with you . . .
Roy has “surprising” athleticism – his game isn’t predicated on being a superior athlete, which is what I love about him. There was a game maybe two weeks ago – I can’t remember which one specifically – where Roy had two dunks in relatively short succession that made me jump off the couch . . . “Holy crap! I forgot he could throw down like that!” He’s just a very efficient player and doesn’t like to out-jump or out-athleticize (like that one, add it to the Gdub file) his opponents so much as out-smart them and out-wit them. I love that. BTW the word “peers” means " one that is of equal standing" – it means they are on the same level.

Agreed.
Roy = Efficiently Athletic.
He does just enough to not tire himself out. He does have incredible body control, but even more incredible athleticism control. He knows exactly when and how much energy to use and makes his defender look silly come 4th quarter time. This exercise in control is even carried over onto his emotions; its been noted before how even his emotional state remains throughout the game. Wild outbursts of dunking prowess and screaming after a big shot is a waste of energy and Brandon’s maturity allows his game a quiet confidence and unshakable determinism.

as I am unintelligent.

oops...
Thanks noaher, I feel dumb. I must have let my rage cloud my brain on the peer comment. I agree that this way that people view him probably helps him fool people. I guess its just us blazer fans that know the real abilities of Brandon and maybe it is better that way. From here on out I will keep it on the DL. ;-)

People thought Larry Bird was unathletic
They didn’t appreciate that balance, hand-eye coordination, strength, quickness (as opposed to speed), etc. are all part of athleticism. In Roy’s case, he has all those attributes plus far more speed & leaping ability than people realize.
But Roy will never say this. He’d rather let them scratch their heads after the game and try to figure out how that “unathletic” guy just beat them.

Great body control
Yeah, that’s a good point. Too many people take speed as athleticism, when body control and COORDINATION are so much more important.
How does Dirk get a step on anyone? Coordination and balance; body control. Now, Roy is much more athletic than a lot of casual fans think because he doesn’t dunk it, but a lot of his advantages are gained through body control and timing. Like a change up pitcher, he keeps the enemy off balance and then STRIKES.
And that is athleticism. Supreme body control beats the gangly loosey goosey but uncoordinated athleticism of a Travis Outlaw any day of the week.
Oden has that loosey goosey athleticism too. Once he refines it, knows how to control it (or re-learns how to control it), he’ll do a lot better. That could be called fundamentals, but I call it body control. It comes through natural ability and hard work.

Agreed
I read this article yesterday on ESPN.com that laughs at the idea that some people proposed of Michael Phelps being the world’s best athlete and looked at what is athleticism. The article’s idea (and what the author plans to put to the test) is that the best athletes would dominate in playground games like tag, dodgeball, four square, etc. Body control and coordination are the traits that are paramount on those types of games far more than swimming or cycling (which to me are tests of endurance more than anything else)

Roy can't dunk the ball without jumping with both feet
I’m waiting for the day Roy dunks it jumping off one foot on the break. Most of Roy’s game is below or at the rim so his athleticism isn’t part of his arsenal. Roy has great body control, but most people don’t consider that athleticism.

i dont consiter roy athletic
i know he is athletic. i don’t know many NBA players that aren’t athletic though. i just consider him a fundamental player before i consider him an athletic one.

Eh, I dunno, I agree sorta but
That’s a pretty positive article overall. Heck, let everyone think he’s unathletic, it’ll make it that much easier to keep scoring on his opponents.

predraft athletic measurements
Roy: 34" no-step vert, 40.5" max vert, 6 bench press, 11.13 second lane agility drill, 3.27 second 3/4 court sprint.
Average NBA SG prospect: 29.6" no-step vert, 34.9" max vert, 10.5 bench press, 11.35 second lane agility drill, 3.23 second 3/4 court sprint.
Basically Roy has average running ability, above average quickness, and excellent leaping ability.

Roy’s new nickname should be the little fundamental

This is some my dad is stronger than your dad junk.
When Roy comes to your town you can dunk on him all night and sit their like a befuddled clown in the last 1.9 seconds when he walks away with the win.
BOOM?

here is what you want
from draftexpress remember to take these numbers with a grain of salt as not all players train for these drills. i.e. Kevin Durant, so they look unimpressive, but keep in mind what has Joey Graham (the best “athlete” of his class.) done lately.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

This guy writes an entire article drooling all over Roy ...
and you pick out one little line to criticize, which isn’t even that unreasonable? Has Roy impressed you athletically as Wade, K*be, Carter, etc.? No. Is he the least athletic guard in the league? No. He’s somewhere in the middle. But the point the writer makes is that none of that matters, because Roy is so good at what he does without having to be athletic that nobody can stop him anyway. I loved the article, and feel smarter for having read it.
