Reminder from Dave

There's still too much "this should be a fanshot" commenting going on.

I appreciate people trying to help keep the site organized.  Helping people understand the difference between fanposts and fanshots is part of that.  But if you're going to do that, do it in the context of other feedback.  Reply to a person's posting first, then if you want to include a, "By the way, you may want to consider making shorter things like this into Fanshots" I have no problem with that.  This is especially important for people new to posting who are just getting their first feedback from the site and its community.

I dislike "This should be a Fanshot" in isolation because:

1.  It appears to dismiss the person's post, as if where it's filed is the only worthy thing about it.

2.  It appears to denigrate Fanshots, making them lesser than Fanposts.  That's not the purpose.  Fanshots are supposed to be quick-hitting and interesting, like a good short story.  Fanposts are supposed to be more in-depth and interesting, like a good novel.  One is not inherently better.

Please find a way to help people understand the purpose of each section without cutting them short or skimming over their contributions.

Fanshots are 75 words or less correct? Fanposts are 75 words or more correct?

I thought fanshots were links mainly to articles, still a little confused with all the rules here,,,,,,,

That's because the rules aren't hard and fast

and that’s because the two formats are different (not my fault).

In general:

Fanshot = simple themes, quick links, pictures, usually 75 words or less.

Fanpost = complex issues, deeper discussions, usually 75 words or more.

So, in summary:

General Rules:

—Don’t swear
—Be respectful of each other and don’t make ad hominem attacks
—Make sure what you say benefits the overall discussion
—Fanpost/Fanshot distinctions listed above

I should edit to say

I’m not arguing about the validity of people’s assertions as to Fanpost/Fanshot material. Most of the time when people say something should be a Fanshot they’re correct. But ease us into it a little more and acknowledge the post too.

Just kidding, you should see if a description of "fanshot" and "fanpost" can be put into the sidebar.

Also, Just a lil outside perspective. My friend at work here admitted to me yesterday that he is a Blazersedge.com lurker but never has created an account “because it’s like the blazersedge club” and apparantly our lil’ community is “snobby”. I then asked him if he only reads my posts and we both laughed. So seriously, I think we should all be a lil more nice to newer posters. I think a fair amount of rookie hazing is appropriate but nothing really mean or “snobby”.

Also, dont think I let my friend insult this site though. I stated that “it’s not Blazersedge fault you are scared of a lil intelligent conversation and have a really weak chin!”. He didnt get it, whatever.

Joking aside, I’m one who has pointed to the Blazer’s performance coming out of TO’s, along with other things as their record in OT games and close scoring games, as indication that McMillan is in fact a very good coach. I guess I’ve missed the discussions where this has been proven to be false.

I seem to recall seeing a stat posted last year

that showed percentage of plays in which a team scored following a timeout possession. I believe the Blazers had the best number for the league.

That is not proof by itself that Nate is a great coach, as the players are the one’s who have to execute, but it is certainly seems like a good indicator. I’ll acknowledge that seeing a Nate team regularly be in the top 5 or so in this catagory every year would be better evidence.

hakkaa päälle !

by timg56 on Dec 5, 2008 12:14 PM PST up reply actions

there are a lot

of additional stats cropping up each season…sometimes they are actually created for fun ……fun stats or fan/media=stats that probably have little or no significance except for comparisons or debate…
Some stats actually get started at the request of the coaching staff
Stats that are used by coaches, GM,s and scouts usually have the qualification of comparing them to the actual play of the game and their sums….without this qualification stats lose their value significantly….in other words they give you a quick snapshot to certain parts of the game, but they do not give you the entire picture after all the footnotes are tallied up……especially in a team sport…..IMHO
It would be good to get some qualified input on what stats coaches deem significant….I would think team statistics would be of more importance to them than individual ones…..

In response to the responses

I would just like to say that I would never allow anyone, ANYONE disrespect my favorite website/webcommunity by calling us snobs. I think the point that he was attempting to make or rather the point I extrapolated from what he said is this place can get overwhelming at times. He most like sees a ridiculous fanpost go up from a troll or a pretend troll (boomdizzle) and doesnt know the context of the situation therfor interprets the comments and /or response in a more negative way.

This site is getting more and more recognition. Blazersedge.com is on pace, in my not-so-humble opinion to becoming the DailyKos or realclearpolitics.com of the Basketball community. It’s a blog but doesn’t have the “blog” stignma attached to it thanks to Dave and Ben (def. the best bball and maybe all of sports reporting and writing tandem) .

So in conclusion, I think that all of the responses are correct and some of the mock affronted and feigned offense reactions are funny and sarcastic, even if the poster didn’t inted them to be.

Much love to all the BE SNOBS!

What you say has merit, Sophia

as does your friend’s comment.

Part of the reason I mention this is the impression that the “Fanshot” comment leaves on new folks. For them making a first Fanpost means dipping their toes into a new community and contributing something. That’s a risk. It’s like you walk into the potluck with your famous Cheese Munchies that your family loves. Hearing “This should be a Fanshot” first thing without any other context or support is like hearing, “Oh. That is not Gruyere cheese. What is it, cheddar? How…provincial.” Whereas hearing the Fanshot explanation in the context of comments about the post is like hearing, “Great Munchies! All the cheese stuff goes on that table over there! Welcome!”

SBN needs to build you a whole new format.

Are there any othere SBN sites that get close to this much traffic? These days even the fanshots disappear within a few hours, replaced by new stuff.

Maybe subcategories, subheadings, page tabs, hidden doorways, reams of paperwork…I dunno. I used to browse several sites, but now you can pretty much count on it winding up on BE if it’s out there.

Oh, and the main page needs to be highlighted somehow better once you click into a fanpost…it just sorta gets lost in it’s little red box.

I could go on, but that would use up more electrons. Electrons which can be better spent elsewhere, by folks who know how to use them properly.

I was thinking of categories strictly for organization, not to pigeon hole folks. I actually prefer no categories with everything simply in chronological order…the “box of chocolates” approach, but the traffic has increased so much we might need to add a few paragraphs, maybe a chapter or two, plus a great index.

For example, this thread is only a few days old with lots of good info and possibilities for discussion…yet it is already lost to oblivion.

Not just you

but for most of our posts we just need to switch the order of our posts.

We always try to add something to the discussion, we just post “is this a fanshot?” as the title. Just say it at the end of the post instead. Thanks for keeping this site respectful Dave, even if you have to reprimand me.

by staylost on Dec 4, 2008 4:51 PM PST up reply actions

Here's one way to play it:

1. The name of EITHER “Fanposts” or “Fanshots” needs to be changed. It doesn’t matter what you call the second one, but it should have a distinctive name so that users won’t have to decide between “yellow-green” and “greenish-yellow.”

2. The idea of a moderator for the sideboard is a good one. Someone less grouchy than me to steer the noobs to the appropriate area without making them cry — but someone cold enough to wield the blade on the 15th “GET STARBURY NOW” post…

3. The interface for what are now known as “Fanshots” is HORRIBLE and the systems people need to obliterate it.

a.) Links should automatically open in a new window if they are not user specified. As things now stand, the default is to open the link in the same window.

b.) There is no reason not to use the same toolbox that “Fanposts” uses. The current toolbox is a confusing mess.

4. The Daily Trade Thread akin to the daily Junk Drawer is a GREAT idea. As one person stated today, it’s far easier for those of us who hate reading Fantasy Island-type posts to dodge one thread than it is to dodge 5 separate ones. (Or 7 or 9 or 12, I add…)

Once things are named properly and the 2nd section of the sidebar is as easy to use as the 1st section, things will fall into place pretty quickly, I think.

I have two pet peeves with fanshots

1) You can’t post a link to an article and then throw a block quote teaser after it.
That’s journalism 101, people aren’t gonna read your article just cause of the headline. You gotta let ‘em know what it’s all about. And often times the best way to do this is by giving a sampling of what’s to come. I usually just solve this problem by using regular quotation marks, but that just doesn’t stand out as much as a good block quote.

2) There’s no preview button. I guess that’s because there’s not supposed to be any super fancy formatting in there anyway. But I have a suspicion that I could do blockquotes with HTML, but without a preview button I don’t know if it’d work without throwing it out to the wolves.

Also, if there was a preview button, people could play around with fanshots more so we could know what its true limitations are.

I pretty much know for a fact

that this is a blog that’s watched closely from SBN’s point of view. Your suggestions do get heard. It takes a while to implement things but go ahead and offer ideas to make things better. Eventually you’ll see the kinks worked out as the format evolves and you guys will have been a part of that.

—Dave

by Dave on Dec 4, 2008 6:54 PM PST up reply actions

That's good to hear

I love the format in general. It’s kind of surprising how they have made a cookie cutter blog format that is flexible enough to accommodate the needs of any and all fan bases. You can tell someone up top is monitoring the blogs because when a problem arises and people start complaining about formatting and such, it doesn’t seem to take long before a solution magically appears.

I’m also very impressed how we as a community have found ways to become more organized. First the junk drawer, then our adaptation to the more streamlined fanshots, and now our venture into the trading post. I think all of the ideas continue to help create more space for the meat and potatoes of the SBN, the fanposts.

The fact that people keep a level head around here due to your rules has allowed us to think rationally and put our heads together to create some wonderful solutions. So thanks Dave for keep this site classy, and holding us all to a higher standard.

Good to know

I think a “Trades” section all to itself would be great. Perhaps even a general chat section. It seems a shame that two of three “recommended” slots need to go to these, while at the same time I think they’re both important to the community. Trades seem a no-brainer for a sports blog, since there will always be people that want to play GM (and even more like myself that don’t want to hear it, so a separate section makes sense) and a general chat section is pretty self explanatory.

Basically, if something is regular enough that people have to say “okay, everyone rec this so it can go up where we can see it” on a daily basis, it deserves it’s own section.

And I second that “fanshots” needs a more contrasting name. Or maybe “fanposts” could be “soap box” or “shout outs” or something. I mean, let’s be honest here. The “fan” part can be safely implied and not stated.

Incidentally, on the SBN service topic, I did find myself noticing last game thread that

the page seemed to be loading better, without the nasty “lock up” problem which had almost driven me from even trying to follow it in real time. I am hoping they have fixed it somewhat. Any word on that ? It has seemed like we overwhelm their expectations. We are the system “stress test” specialists.

Right

and I haven’t found a way to post a fanshot that isn’t a link or a quote or a picture or a video. Sometimes something doesn’t need a lot of space but since there is no way to format it without it being one of the above it will end up a fanshot.

FWIW (directed at ALL not Timbo) – I’ll choose fanpost if I think it is going to result in a discussion but fanshot if it is just something I want people to see/know/whatever but don’t expect conversation. Of course just about anything elicits conversation these days ; I was amazed that my fanshot about Corey Brewer’s ACL tear (just a piece of information because I knew he had fans here) would evoke 47 comments…

What I want to know is...

What’s this Dave character doing in the sidebar? He’s already hogging the main page. Now he’s in the fanposts bumping our valuable posts off! What the rip?! He’s turning into the blogger version of Stephon Marbury!

Ok, that’s a little harsh. Maybe just the Allen Iverson of blogging.

What a doofus

You should have said, “At your own peril.”

You also should have said, “Especially if jscot or I am there.” Rule of thumb for native Spanish speakers and prezofdeath: If you are joining two individuals with a conjunction (in this case "or"), you should use the form for each that you would use if only one individual were being named. Since you would not say, “Especially if me is there,” but rather “Especially if I am there,” you should use “if I am” in the sentence with the conjunction.

It is “I am” instead of “I are” because “or” makes it singular, rather than plural. If you had wanted to include both of us, you would use “and” and then then verb would be “are” — “Especially if jscot and I are there.”

Note also that I reversed the order. This is for two reasons. First, you should always put the other person first, out of politeness and thus proper grammar. Second, you should always put me first because, well, I’m ME.

Now, the beautiful thing is, you know all this stuff. So by posting it all, I am demonstrating who the real doofus is, and it ain’t you (see, I can do doofus grammar, too).

All of which goes to show that if we start our own blog, it will be doofus free, because even the doofuses will be too smart to go there.

I’m encountering loss of appetite, and this whole post is dizzy.

By they way, if you did not insult anyone besides yourself, and you called bdizzleistheshizle an idiot, was this a confession?

I remember back in the olden days, I would get something like 5-6 fanshots in a row cause NO ONE posted down there. Now it’s a crazy party 24/7, it’s hard to keep up, and I feel like I’ve aged 70 years.

What’s your problem?

I think you might want, in future, to add this comment to a fan-shot instead of a fan post, it really fits better there.

I love SBN

It’s an excellent host for a collection of blogs, and really brings the NBA blogging community together. However, it is planly obvious that this blog is growing at a very rapid pace, and will only keep growing as the team grows and improves.

Somebody mentioned that BE might be outgrowing SBN, I believe this might be true, but I wouldn’t advocate leaving SBN in anyway, it’s just too good of a fit. I wouldn’t want us to turn into a ClutchFans type forum board either.

Lets get Blazers Edge sponsored by the NBA’s Trail Blazers team, that would be cool., their site can surely handle our massive postage.

I really like SBN's format

How you can reply to people and it is easy to post….really a smooth ordeal. Definitely one of the best-formatted blogs I’ve encountered.

And certainly the best in terms of content, both from the head honchos and the community.

I like the idea of the Trailblazers buying us out though…hmm….how about each poster gets a buck for each comment, five for each fanshot, and 10 for each fanpost. Dave and Ben each get a cool 2 million dollar bonus on top of theirs.

"Like" and "justice"

don’t go together. Liking someone or something has nothing to do with justice.

I guarantee you that when I rule the world, the fact that I like someone will have nothing to do with who is targeted by my executioners voluntarily reformed.

Hey Dave,

Could you make a stickied post (similar to the Site Conversation Rules) that explains FanPosts and FanShots, as well as the Junk Drawer and trade posts? I think most errors are made just because people don’t know what to put in each category.

Actually, it could be part of the Site Conversation Rules 2.0, if such a document were to be written.
