Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The End of the World Has Come

OK, check this out.

This has got to be a joke right?  It's April 1, not December 4?  Or has this been the secret to KP's success all along?

I can just imagine:

"We've got to get that Ebenezer Grokman guy!"

"Why?  He's not a great shooter and he barely plays."

"Yeah, but he does this wicked two-handed 540 reverse tomahawk jam!"

"Ooooh, you're right!  That'll totally demoralize the opposition.  Does he play any defense?"

"I don't think anybody in this league can play defense..."

Playoff odds

I’m sure this is how Hollinger calculates his playoff odds when he ranks teams

Two responses...

SMARTASS RESPONSE: The office staff are just looking for an excuse to play video games on the company dime…

SERIOUS RESPONSE: It’s an elaborate computer simulation, kudos for the teams for figuring it out…

I've long thought

that NBA Live and 2K are excellent ways to evaluate how to develop rotations. Typically they try to model the players’ strengths and weaknesses and you can find out if a certain combination would have a terrible time getting a shot off, or playing defense, etc.

As long as you understand its (the game’s) weaknesses, I think it could be very well utilized.

Possibly

however the astute gm uses every tool at his disposal and a system that can simulate a set of conditions using a type of artificial intelligence thousands if not millions of times can be a valuable tool.

Check out this fanshot I did a while ago and it was pretty close

http://www.blazersedge.com/2008/11/28/674867/blazers-104-hornets-90

I did not call is but the website buzzerbeaters came eerily close to predicting the final score of the game as well as a bad game from west and Paul but a good one from Peja.

The thing is as long as the data and the league you create are accurate you can play a thousand seasons in a day and see what happens based on those results.

Pretty cool if you ask me.

Looks about as useful as running the game/season simulator as a way of predicting a single contest or an entire season.

Now if only rosters could be so easily set up like in Live

I have already plugged in everyone from Granger, Prince, Arenas, Felton to Conley into our rotation for test games ;-)
And tested Martell’s shooting guard and Roy’s point guard qualities. Btw, Roy was never good for video games: Not specialized enough.

Work blocks the article

so I only have Dave’s blurb to go on, but it doesn’t seem that far fetched to me. I once read that NFL All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates (a former basketball player) learned how to read defenses by playing a lot of Madden. This will likely be just another tool in KP’s toolbox of tools.

by tingeyga on Dec 4, 2008 11:07 AM PST reply actions

Interesting how the game...

uses stats that are already available to teams, but makes them easier to use. EA basically provided the NBA (and everyone else) with a new user interface.

So I’m thinking there will soon be a new position within each teams staff – Video Game Coordinator. Any volunteers?

by antediluvian on Dec 4, 2008 11:12 AM PST reply actions

I'm sure that our scouts have been

using this info all along and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they have spreadsheets on all the teams/players. This just makes it easier to use.

"This data has been available before — Dynamic DNA simply feeds info culled from popular NBA stat-tracking company Synergy Sports Technology — but never in such an easily digestible way. Morey is quick to point out that getting a feel for how a player interacts with a team is much more useful than just staring at numbers.

As tingeyga says, it’s just another tool – Only I think it is not a tool for KP, it’s not for finding the next Ebenezer Grokman, it’s for the coaches, for planning their defense, matchups, and total game plan.

When I first...

…started reading I thought the whole idea was ridiculous. But after hearing what the game program does, updates from latest stats, it doesn’t sound quite so bizzare. It’s just another way of applying data, the fact that it being filtered through a video game while it sounds strange probably shouldn’t be all that shocking. There is no reset button for an actual N.B.A. game. I guess I kind of think a good staff, a prepared coaching, scouting and management staff shouldn’t need that type of crutch but if they think it is helping then more power to them.

I wouldn't trust NBA Live

they picked the Blazers to get around 36 wins this year

by thomasikehara on Dec 4, 2008 12:32 PM PST reply actions

Maybe the NBA set the pace wrong :)

There is always fine tuning necessary.

This article talks not about the player simulation or how smooth the graphics look, but the real-game data that gets downloaded and is showed in a very easy to understand/digest way in the game. E.g. there are arrows that indicate if a player is more inclined to go left or right, and by what percentage.

by Norsktroll on Dec 4, 2008 12:41 PM PST up reply actions

No.

That game is garbage. It doesn’t matter what fancy marketing crap they come up with. What does DNA have to do with anything? We’re playing video games and basketball here. This ain’t biology. NBA Live is trash. NBA 2K is the ONLY game worth playing.

by Jumbo on Dec 4, 2008 2:48 PM PST up reply actions

DNA is code name for tendencies

NBA 2k9 has much better game play but outside that live takes the cake.

by TheGreatDane17 on Dec 4, 2008 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

Are we playing games or what?

Game play is what’s important. Outside that is nothing. We’re playing a video game of a basketball game. Who cares about anything else? NBA Live can go ahead and take the cake. Eat that cake Live, you fat little piggy.

this is a cool feature

but dont you think the scouting report in the back office report should have included this info in the past? Or is this only applicable to the supporting cast.

Doesn't suprise me.

I have played both 2k9 and Live 09, and I gotta say that while I like both, Live is definitely better. 2k9 does look more realistic, but Live’s gameplay is way more realistic. And my friends actually sit and watch the games on the edge of there seats like real games. Updating every day is off the hook, you really feel it when one of your guys goes down (like when Oden was out). Or if some of your players are cold like LMA, or Rudy last week. The players play just like in real life. B-Roy spin layins to the rim all day. Oden collapses the defense then kicks back out to Rudy for an open three, Roy for a drive, LMA for a spot up shot (or dunk), or a crazy Outlaw fade-away. Another tight thing about the game is you can go back and play match-ups from last year with the same player tendencies from those actual games. Anyways both games are great but I had to show some love for Live 09, Best Basketball game I’ve ever played. I say play both and see which one you like, there are demos on Xbox live or PSN.

A bit early to praise Morey as smartest I think

Not the main topic but Morey’s Rockets have to get out of the first round before he qualifies for smartest GM consideration to me. Yeah he probably has the most far-reaching / fastest brain but still hasn’t proven anything ultra-elite yet not to the level of what Ainge accomplished or Kupchak or RJ Buford or Riley or Dumars. Right now Morey is the second rank behind Utah’s GM, Danny Ferry and Jeff Bowers in New Orleans and maybe even Otis Smith and Donnie Nelson. Right about with rising force Kevin Pritchard.

Morey has made some right calls but biggest mistake he and Adelman have made is with shot distribution. Not reining in the perimeter guys an dnot getting the ball to the bigs quite as much as they probably can handle. the other biggest mistake may or may not be not trading McGrady earlier.

by StatRaven on Dec 6, 2008 12:41 PM PST reply actions

Rockets

Rockets were tied for 6th best regular season last time and bounced out of the 1st round. Rockets tied for 6th best regular seson again right now.Do they get out of the first round this time? Maybe, if they draw Dallas. Do they get out of second round? I really doubt it.

by StatRaven on Dec 6, 2008 12:46 PM PST reply actions

The value of simulations

I thought this simulation would be useful to GMs and maybe even more so to players back in September when I heard about the reality updates from Synergy videotaped based stats. A lot of players hate simple film study but they might use this interactive tool to learn more about their opponents and themselves for substantial benefit.
