RLEC deal for Mario Chalmers + Filler
Other than the fact that Mario Chalmers isn't a vet, he fits our needs at the PG spot; he's a good shooter (37.1 3P%, 54.7 TS%), a true PG who can run an offense, and he can play defense.
One problem is, for a rookie point guard, he's playing extremely well and Miami isn't likely to give him up. The other problem is that he only makes 700k a year, so trading for him on his own isn't going to work.
To solve these problems I've included two guys with extremely bad contracts (for their production, anyway) from Miami. However, dumping bad contracts probably isn't enough for Miami to give up a talented young point guard, so I included Sergio and Jerryd. The trade also works with Martell, Travis or Channing instead of Serg/Bayless, and would likely depend on what Miami would want back in return.
The other upshot to this trade is that Blount's deal expires in 2010 so it would be a decent trade piece, next year. However, this also means that Miami isn't in that much of a hurry to get rid of him (as he won't negatively impact their moves in 2010)--unless they have a cheap owner.
My worry would be that Miami would ask for Rudy or Joel (they lack size) back in return. It seems like we're not giving up enough.

We could've had him.
I’m not sure he has shown anything new this year that the Blazers didn’t already know about. He seems to be right were everyone expected him to be, a great shooter, good defender. I think the last thing the Blazers need is another young PG.
I was very high on Chalmers during the draft. I actually thought he would have been a better fit than Bayless. I don’t know about that anymore, even with Bayless sitting on the bench.

KP is not going to trade for a pot-head
Also he’s a good defender yes, but as of right now… Blake is a better shooter, and Sergio is a better playmaker
Rooo-D!

Hrmm.
Well, I forgot about the pot incident. But, I fall into the camp of not holding athletes to higher standards than our past two presidents and our president elect. 1992 was the last time we didn’t have a drug user in the white house and it will be at least another four years. That being said, the team is concerned about its image in that regard, so I suppose it’s a moot point.
In any case, the flip side is that Blake (defense) and Sergio (shooting, to a lesser degree defense) each have a clear weakness that other teams can exploit. Chalmers seems to be a well rounded role player, and he’s a winner.
Still, you’re right, the team’s not going to risk bringing back the jail blazers image.

but the past two presidents and Obama are not current drug users
not that I want to accuse Chalmers of still toking up, but as Josh Howard explained, it’s a fact of life in the NBA. So just because Obama and Dubya did a little nose candy back in the day doesn’t mean they are held to the same standard as NBA players.

but kp does. and if the standards of the past 2 presidents, and our president elect are that low, it indeed say’s something about our Great country in general.

So we're basically admitting that we totally screwed up in the draft last year
I think Chalmers is a nice player, but you’re giving up Jerryd without ever seeing him play…
If Jerryd played for Miami, we might be talking about his great scoring right now. Since he’s on the Blazers we don’t know yet. That doesn’t mean he won’t be a very good player. I think people are misunderstanding why Nate hasn’t played him this year.
I won’t even mention that you’re throwing in Sergio and RLEC, two other decent assets.
If we did this trade, it would show a complete failure on the part of KP and his scouts. Ouch.

Too Early to Tell.
Mario’s a rookie playing on a team that has no PG’s at all. As a result, he’s getting a lot more minutes than he would on most other teams. In that context, he has no more value than any number of rookies who get some stats because they get to play. Whether he’s an “ideal” PG is another issue. Roy’s the PG during all crunch time minutes when he takes over the game and the ball. Mario may or may not be that complementary piece, and in any case, it’s far too early to make that decision given he’s only played 20 games or so.
