Trolling, or Fanatical Enthusiasm?
I'm new to this whole blogging thing, but I have really enjoyed Blazer's Edge. I know that this Fan Post will probably tick some people off, but hopefully there are some of you out there that agree with me. Here's the gist of my post:
Why are we so worried about offending bloggers from different SB Nation Blogs? Why are we apologizing for other guys from Blazer's Edge that are "trolling"?
I read some of the things on the Celtic's blog that were deemed "trolling", and thought that it was funny and in good spirit. Part of what makes rooting for a specific sports team fun is that when all is said and done, you get to walk away proud with your head held high, or trudge off with your tail between your legs. If you are the winner....time for some ribbing aimed towards the other team's fans. If you are the loser....be prepared for the same.....suck it up, and get ready for the next game.
I understand that not everyone thinks the way I do.......and I respect that. I just don't completely understand it. "Fan" is short for "Fanatic". "Fanatic", as defined in the Webster Dictionary is......"marked by excessive enthusiasm and often time uncritical devotion". This isn't disrespect. Going to another team's blog and ribbing the fans is not disrespectful. It is part of being a fan. It is the definition of being a fan. When your team wins, you have won the right to some friendly ribbing.
Now let me say this.....I haven't been spending my time on other team's blogs "trolling". To be honest, I didn't even know what that term meant until a few days ago. When I found out, I thought, "Yeah....so....what's the big deal?"
I'm all for apologizing for something if I feel a wrong has been committed. However....I don't understand why apologies have been passed out to the folks over at Celtics Blog. Just doesn't make any sense to me. I don't see that any wrong was committed. Just a few guys being fans.
I don't have much more to say, but I wanted to include something I read over at Celtics Blog. Here it is:
Dear Portland,
Not only are you classless retards who drop confetti after a regular season game, but your win was a charade.
Without being handed an extra point by the a LEAGUE RECOGNIZED officiating error, Eddie House would have never gotten that ball. He wouldn't have had a chance to suck, and the ball would have gone to Paul Pierce, who was drawing fouls at will. He would have tied the game, as he was stellar and clutch from the line all game, and we would have won in overtime.
Nice confetti, you ridiculous excuse for a basketball team.
So....does this make you mad? You bet it does! But you know what? This guy is a FAN. I don't blame him one bit. But.....I'm not gonna apologize for it one bit either. And if he wants to write stuff like this....he can expect much of the same from Blazer Fans.
I WILL NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR BEING AN OUTRAGEOUS/NO HOLDS BARRED BLAZER FAN! GO BLAZERS!

And it isn't trolling if it's posted on their blog.
If he comes over here just to stir up trouble, though, then that’s textbook trolling.

Agreed.
The difference between a fan doing that chest-thumping at THAT FAN’S FANSITE
and doing it at the site of the losing team’s fans is huge – HYOO-wudge.

Be a fan - not a jerk
I don’t consider offending other people as part of my rights as a fan. Going to another team’s blog site to gloat and be a jerk is doing exactly that – not being a fan.
I don’t have a problem with the comment you copied and pasted from the Celtics site for one reason, it was posted on the Celtics site. If someone came to BE and posted the same thing, then I would be offended.

Exactly
There’s nothing wrong with being excited about a win, but just because you’re a devoted fan doesn’t mean you have an excuse to say or do whatever you want where ever you want.
It’s not like there aren’t places to trash talk after a win. ESPN has conversations for every game and you can go back and forth with fans from the other team all night. But to go over to a Celtics blog just to rub a victory in their faces…..that’s not being a fan, that is just being a classless idiot. I, for one, am glad that there are people who want to hold themselves and something they care about (this site) to a higher standard. I care because how I act in any format, anonymous or otherwise, and who I associate with (internet or real world) is a reflection on the kind of person I am. I care because I enjoy being a part of a community that is not only passionate and intelligent, but also of great character and quality. I could frequent any number of Blazer basketball blogs or sites, but I come here because the high quality of the discourse and a dozen other qualities that I could articulate if I wasn’t so excited about New Years.
I know that fan is short for fanatical, but c’mon guys and gals, there’s nothing wrong or weak or what have you about being respectful.

I don't know about classless...
but yeah, going to another blog to smear a little mud on their windsheild is not…..cool….going over to congradulate, or ….do the customary “good game guy’s better luck next time” is just…well….
ok..in my book.
but yeah, being an Overly offensive nit wit on another teams site is just not cool….
but going and making comments about the elements of the specific game can’t be bad can it?
some take offense to the fact that we are blazer fans and going onto other teams boards….
I imagine if they had a base the size of ours….we’d be dealing with our share of nit wit’s too…or more so ..DAVE WOULD…..so really it’s up to their administrator to decide how much is too much, …and until the admins throw out a few warnings,….
I dont think many of us are doing all that much wrong….
but there are the few that are being just nit wits and should be banned for a year….(it’s possible trust me)

This is a two-way street, folks.
Although Portland fans who troll other blogs are smug idiots, opposing fans who act all sanctimonious about some overzealous, yet harmless gloating are also idiots.
The world is full of idiots, though, so this whole to-do about nothing doesn’t surprise me one bit.

Not trolls, trespassers.
Since BEdge is so huge, it bleeds over into the other blogs. Heck, sometimes there are more BEdge posters on another teams page than their own. I read the blogs from the other teams, but I don’t post there. I sorta figure it’s their own party. This is our house, where we weep over the losses and revel in the wins and have pointless discussions over a cold beer about who we can trade. The weeping and reveling would be greatly different if every third post or so was from team “X” fan, either throwing it in our face or even offering his condolences in a well thought out analysis.
So I figure since this is our house, then that is their house. If you invite yourself to their party, even if you behave yourself, eventually somebody’s gonna poop in their closet and you’ll get blamed.

as you are new to this as you admit, keep reading and you’ll soon know the difference… took me a while also. You’ll know the difference when you read a post by one of your fellow fans on another blog site and get embarrassed…. There is nothing wrong with cross-posting (I did not say cross-dressing TIH), but I think it all comes down to basic manners, and the Internet has dumbed down conversation some to the point where anonymous posters can just say stupid stuff without consequence.

I completely agree.....
If I see the word “offend” or “offended” again I am going to puke. Why is everyone so easily annoyed? Is it because many of you are product of Portland Public Schools where being de-balled is taught before learning the ABC’s?
I am very thankful that the Blazer’s Edge has limits, such as no swearing etc. It is also a very intelligent and thoughtful forum. Blazer’s fans are the best fans I have seen but there are a few that have no personality, have no sense of humor, and have no b@lls.
You can be intelligent and rib at the same time. There is a balance for almost everything. Kevin Garnett, for example, crossed the line when we played in Boston several weeks ago. He doesn’t deserve to be merely beaten. He deserves a stomping!
I’m not saying stoop to the level of a Jerry Springer fan but we shouldn’t be stuffy elitists either.
The bottom line is this, if the Blazers adhered to the code of conduct some expect in our fans, we would suck! I’m glad Oden didn’t offer a hand to Allen last night when he knocked him down. I’m glad LMA was not classy and dignified last night when he elbowed Garnett’s eye. I’m glad Pryzbilla did not check his package at the door when he yelled obscenities last night. Sports are intense, thankfully.
Natural, as far as trolling goes I think there is a time and place for everything. For example, blowing up the Timberwolves site telling them how bad they suck is probably not cool. However, blowing up the Celtics site and bringing them back down to earth is something I have no problem with. They brought disgrace to the game of basketball when they played us a few weeks ago and they needed to be called out.
I enjoy it when opposing team’s fans offer their opinions on Blazer’s Edge. It is an opportunity for all of us to offer a collective verbal beatdown! Here here Natural.
by swg777 on Dec 31, 2008 7:44 PM PST reply actions 3 recs
Offering opinions is one thing
Why did they bring disgrace to the game a few weeks ago?
Hard fouls? No.
Intense play? No.
Taunting? Yes. Disgraceful.
Going somewhere else to offer opinions is fine. I do it occasionally, too.
But taunting a beaten opponent is classless, whether you are KG or a fan. If KG’s behaviour was classless and a disgrace (and it was), then going to their site to taunt is also classless and a disgrace. You can’t have it both ways.

KG’s behavior is a disgrace to the game of basketball. A game he is paid millions to play before millions of viewers. Trolling opposing blogs must therefore be a disgrace to what? Internet comments left by anonymous geeks? Hard to disgrace the art of leaving a comment. I think you’re over glorifying the whole thing. Why try to scrub the stink off poop? When it comes to comments on blogs you should be happy if people manage to get there theirs straight. Expecting substance or, god forbid, etiquette and grace is laughable. Try not to be too stuffy.

but my contention is just becouse someone duznt like me in their house duznt give me the right to go in their house and try and defend myself, or instigate a confrontation
even if they have done so to me.i understand that fans and the internet can be base and unthinking, but im not really interested in personaly using that as an excuse to act like a classless ass. not to say ive never done so. but i do make a personal effort to keep my bad smaller then my good/ and with time it becomes who i am. i dont even try and make inflamatory comments on you tube or aol, i dont want to be an unbalenced sousche. its simply unattractive to me. thats why, for the most part, ive appriciated this comunity, and why im reluctant to tolerate less. there are no “rights” hear, you have to be able to first “aford” and internet connection, or by resorsful enough to aquir acces to one. this is not accross the board for every single human alive. second, its daves show. he has to at least this point discoredged youtubelike tollerence and inflamatory discorse. this has made conversation enjoyable and infact enlightening on multiple subjects. there seem to be many, that want to enjoy the fruits of his labor, but have no interest in contributing to the maintanece of the community, and instead want to use the “internet rules” as an excuse for pore soscial ettiquette, things that would most certainly offend them if they were confronted with said behavior in their own house, or if they had a family member or other such loved oneconfronted with said behovior. to be a part of a comunity, you have to ackshually BE a PART of that comunity, you have to contribute, not just take from it.we have had a rich comunity, and we will attract takers, but they will not contribute to maintaining a high standard, and instead will claim thier right to free speach, or throw terms like pious and highminded around like an insult. they will in effect contribute to the decline and little more. they will use excuses to behave inapropriatly, like “he started it” or :they deserve it" and their actions will make it more dificult to main tain the balence. then people will make appologies for them trying to diflect the notion that we are infact nothing more then a youtube comunity, devoid of inteligence and ettaquette, and again the detractors will rise up, complaining of how their voice is somehow being supressed, and their “right” to be disrespectful is being threaghtened. maybe many of them have little care for how their actions affect others, and just dont understand not being aloud to just do anything that duznt land them in jail. i think theirs a lot of truth to that, i just think that they are people that generally only think of themselves. theyll push the boundries of good taste, and then bellittle those that would try to maitain some standard for there comunity. not one single person has a “right” to be a part of this comunity, not one, save Dave. even Ben is “Granted” his privalidge, and what a privalidge it is, and he very easily, maintains Daves interest in continuing to extend that privalidge to him, for which we all are the better off for it. and us, the less we police ourselves, the more Dave has to, the more that dave has to, the less interested he could possible becoume. im pretty sure that Daves mortgadge payments do not come from writing and maintaining this blog, so it stands to reason, that as soon as this blogging thing becomes more of a headache then a joy, hes gonna pull the plug. its easy to read into his writing and see that hes a fairly well ballenced guy. he probably cares for his wife and kid much more than this, yet thus far hes enjoyed it enough to continue to participate, and we are fortunate for that. i chose the comunities and my friends by certain standards, if those are not met, there really is no attraction, in witch case i will simply abandon them. if we de-evolve in to internet cretons needing constant monerting and causing Dave steady headaches, then we run that risk. there are abviously people that have intergrated themselve in this community that dont care. The BEdge has even adopted its own troll, how regularly adds more to the diskorde then the discourse. his comments can be found in this very thread complaining of the nature of this discution, bellittleling those that want to maintain a respectful envirenment to have resoned discution about our favorite team. personally, im sure that i dont speak for everybody, and i doubt for even a majority, but i enjoy this comunity BECOUSE of the ability to disagree, and evolve a concept or idea through respectfully trading ideas and playing off each other with good ettuquette. to those that disagree, i would ask you why you are hear? there are several other blogs, and many that have interesting writers, and even some that have more access to the team like olive. rather then detract from hear, just go there, rather complain that your lack of care about how your actions affect others, just go away. </ end rant >

No KG came to our house and started doing his antics and hiting LMA, so I delivered their own poo to them. Why cuz KG comes to our house and does crap, and I know some of those fans defend him. as long as we don’t stoop to their level. It is important to represent Portland and BE in a good fashion. I think it is fine to “troll” as long as you aren’t there just to make others feel bad about their loss. Good discussion between fans of opposing teams can be interesting even eye opening. When it is degraded to bad mouthing of franchises it is not what this is all about. I think others are right, go to the game threads on ESPN or something.

its quite possible that having a bunch of gloating Blazer fans at his pity party, was a little more then he could take. i wouldnt underestimate that influence. im not a sport fan becouse its a chance to gloat and be supirior in an imaginary way over another person, my life has a touch more meaning then that. i enjoy the drama of life as it unfolds on the basketball court. ive let go of the more base, “my dad kan kick your dads ass” crap. i also dont want to spend my time with people that act that way. i doubt that there are many people that truly enjoy having some dousche bag gloating in their face, for no other reason then i like or live next to a different sporting team, maybee a game that i used to enjoy playing in high school, and enjoyed a competive comradery with teamates. i no its the internet and that people are anonomous dirt holes, but that duznt give me lisence to be a dill hole to the nest guy, and treat them as krappy as i kan, just becouse its annomouse. its the internet is just a cheap excuse to be base and take off the mask of decency that the less then fullfilled irl are forced to ware by common sosial accountability and fear of retribution. this random rant is not directed at you specificaly by any means. ive watched you long enough to no that thow crass and brash, your not generikly disrespectful or base. the thing is that this blog in partikular is a great read, and the comunity has been as well. not perfect, but better then youtube, and theres people that are attracted to it, who would have it reduced to youtube comments. those same detracters that throw the “high and mighty” crap arround would be gone as soon as they got wut they wanted. the are deffinition of trolls, interupting the established community. this comunity has set standards, for critikl conversation regarding the blazers and basketball, thats based on good ettiquette. if thats not your cup of tee, join another comunity. but theres a reason you stay, its becouse of those standards that the leval of discourse is so high. so if to be a fan for you is to gloat in the face of your “foe” then be a fan someware else.again this comment is not directed at Blazerfan1

Yea I kind of have a problem with trolls...
Maybe somebody much funnier than me could do a fanpost titled something like:
TROLLS!!
How to roll with trolls:
When you come across the troll, respond as you would if this were the Simpson’s and giant advertising Billboards have come to life and are destroying your town. (This method is guaranteed by Paul Anka too! [guarantee void in Tennessee])
“Just don’t look! Just don’t look” (find this episode you will enjoy it, Treehouse of Horrors something)
Know your troll:
Troll in Sheep’s Clothing (TSC):
A troll who posts ridiculous ideas as if he were a fan of your team.
Habitat: Your favorite SBN sites
Quote: “Look I just want what’s best for our team”
Fact: He wants the exact opposite of what is best for your team.
Somebody much funnier take it from here:
Jaws were hitting the floor as Greg repeatedly attempted to tear the rim off the backboard...

Its called setting the example
I dont recall Boston fans coming to the BlazersEdge and bragging and boasting after they crushed us earlier this year. Had they done so, no doubt the perception towards them would have been of trollers and poor winners.
So what makes it ok for Bedgers to go sophomoric on them and then turn around and excuse-make it as simple fandamonium? I read the posts from our “fans” and they were emberassing. They may not have come across as shamelessly had they been posted on the BlazersEdge, where they belonged.
Seems like common sentiment is suggesting Boston deserved it, considering KG’s prior antics at our teams expense, so how does acting with similiar malcontence make it right?
Its apparently problematic to now suggest Bedgers act with class or feel some contriteness for fear of being labeled as pious and moralizing.

sometimes those blazersfans dont even post on Blazersedge.com
I saw a few that I recognized but most were completely foreign . Not that I know everyone on Blazersedge.com but I do spend a fair amount of time on here clearly and some of those were just trashy and classless "fans’ being jerks that in no way represent Blazersedge.com.

True
although one in particular continued to pour it on. Its funny, I went to the Celticsblog to see what Calbones or whatever he name was had to say about Lamarcus, because before the game he made some pretty harsh comments on Lamarcus being soft. Instead of a retraction or change of opinion, their board was flooded with BlazersEdge posters acting classless. It just really bigged me, as much as the rationalization behind this post does.

and since Im dislexic your typos automatically correct themselves in my mind :)
It is classless, the taunting and stuff, and hopefully he/she will pay heed to all our upset-ness over it. We won a close game, most of us were pumped but it’s not the first time some Blazer fans have talked trash after a win this season . Hopefully it doesn’t become a pattern b/c I would hate to be grouped in with or considered one of an arrogant and/or obnoxious fan base.

Ok,
just regarding the last sentence in the main post. I totally understand the passion and commitment to the team. I would never apologize for being a Blazer fan either…..say if I went to an away game, but….
well the first example that came to mind is this and please, I’m not trying to start a debate here, it’s just an example. I’m an atheist and I’m not going to apologize to anyone for being such. However, it is another thing entirely for me to, for example, go into a church during a service and start yelling about how there is no God. No one there is going to appreciate my passion or conviction or what have you, they’re just going to be insulted and defensive. It would be extremely classless to do that. Now, we’re only talking sports here, but the concept is the same. There’s no need to extol amazing fandom at people who just want to talk amongst other celtics fans.

My theory is that Boston fans are losing it because:
a.) the Cavs are a lot better than last year and may very well beat them in the playoffs; and
b.) last year the Celtics, IIRC, blew out most if not all of the Western Conference contenders on their West Coast swing(s).
They need to chill. Their team is a little worn out right now. Heck, how could they NOT be so worn out, given their nonstop neurotic level of intensity (which is even higher than last year in my opinon).
And who cares about winning 73 games? When Chicago won 72, their team was as fresh as a daisy (early exit the prior year, new energy with Rodman, MJ had just taken two years off). Trying to repeat that feat just sets yourself up for being burned out at playoff time like Dallas was a few years ago.
The C’s are old. It’s a long season. They can afford to pace themselves a bit, lose a few more games while Big Baby sweats off a few more lbs.,… and then come out with guns a blazing in the spring.
As far as the trolling goes, it’s just stupid either way. Thankfully I have a filter. I was screaming at the TV last night, especially every time that Paul Pierce went the free throw line in the 4th quarter (nice 3 point play when he should have been called for a charge – nobody talks about that 5 point swing). I can talk about it calmly now, but if I had been in here or on the Celtics blog I would have been going postal, getting banned, and disgracing myself as a BEdger. Instead I just got quizzical looks from the wife and dog.

each fan should stay on his team's blog
for the most part, stopping by from time to time to give a perspective on a trade proposal or thanking for a win is ok, but we have to be careful when making other comments and we should stay away from them after wins.
Just imagine that you have a very ugly son/daughter, you and everyone knows he/she is ugly, but if someone not close to you says that “beauty is not his/her strength”, you’re gonna be mad and rightly so.

great Conversation..
As being celtics fans (out OF USA & Foreigner) and daily readers of blog[s] from diff teams here in SBN and sometimes post on them too, i would say that internet are free for all kind of people. You cannot stop haters, trollers and so on even by Banning them. They can just create new identity and come back.
Theirs a lot of way how to say “how great we are” to other people by not offending them and make them accept the loss. If i create for example a diff id here and starting to say all sh**y things in this blog and pretend to be a fans of any team, i dont think that people here just go to other blogs and rant the same way i do (or much worse).
Ignoring silly comments is just one of the proven way to stop a bad conversation. I dont know also if theres a feature in SBN blog to lock specific TOPIC before it go worst.
I read daily in this blog and post sometimes if i feel that conversation is good as i do from other Blogs and Celtics blog.
Wish you all a Happy New Year and Wishing you more wins to come and reach the team goal for this season and seasons to come.

Just understand
If you are relatively new to blogging just understand that often the trolling exceeds the friendly good natured ribbing level. If people could keep it in check and not have it de-evolve into the muck that trolling often becomes I’d agree. But too often it just becomes ugly for everyone the troller and the responders.
Sort of off topic but I’m a Blazer fan and I have to kind of agree with the Celtic fan in regards to our reaction post game. For a regular season game it does look a little like over kill when we drop confetti and the announcer is screaming Blazers Win! Blazers Win! like we just won the Championship. Which coach or athlete has said, when you do something good, pretend like you knew it was going to happen and act like it could happen again? Our post game celebrations are pretty extreme BUT unlike the Celtics our goal this season isn’t a championship. Celtics fans should know that for most teams a win against them is huge. So reactions are going to be more extreme. Plus I think we drop confetti after every home win, so just get over it Celtics fans. The only person with a right to complain is the janitor that has to sweep it up after everyone has left.

Here's what I am OK with..........and not OK with.......
1. I am OK with fans portraying themselves as themselves. And what I mean by that is……if they visit another site, let it be known that you are a Blazer fan, and say what you wanna say. If that is gloating over a win….fine. And on the opposite side of that, I am OK with other fans from other sites doing the same to us.
2. I am not OK with portraying yourself as someone that you are not. Don’t go to another Fan SIte and try to be the next Mata Hari. Not OK with that. If you are gonna say something, at least have the cajones to use your own screen name and be accountable for what you say.
Maybe I am still a little confused about this whole “trolling” thing. Pretty sure that my 2nd example is classic “trolling”. However, not so sure about the first example.
by Natural on Jan 1, 2009 10:35 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed about the postgame celebrations
I don’t really care about the confetti drop and the announcer and such… it’s more for the fans than it is for the team. And if it were something we only did after “big” games, I would understand the beef. But because it happens at the Rose Garden after every win, whether it’s the Boston Celtics or the OKC SloppySeconds, I don’t think it’s something to complain about. Of course we’ll be more excited after the team defeats the Celtics – it’s a bigger game. But the programmed celebration is the same day in and day out.

The Celtics richly deserve a little trolling.
Here’s my post in a response to an article in the Boston Herald in which KG argues that he’s just talking to his teammates and doesn’t know any of the opposing players’ names (NBA insult):
Wow. I didn’t think it was possible for me to hate a team more than the Lakers. Wrong. Sportsmanship be damned. Your team has no class. KG is a punk coward who taunts little point guards, throws cheap elbows and cries to the ref upon retaliation. Can’t keep his mouth shut even when it’s a blowout cuz he likes to kick a guy when he’s down. KG: the guy who beat you’s name is L-A-M-A-R-C-U-S. Woof. Get used to it. Oh, the guy who posterized you is T-R-A-V-I-S. If you go back to school maybe you could learn to spell it. The bully’s sorry toady got brushed aside like a little girl by G-R-E-G O-D-E-N. He’s also the guy who flicked Ray Allen’s whiny _ into the first row. We’re back. In the future, yall will continue to get it doggie style from Oregon’s team. At least KG’s pups will be part pit bull and provide Big Baby with something warm to hold as he cries himself to sleep. You suck.
I should have added that KG, when he was on a $126 million contract had a rep for never tipping the pizza guy. Classy.

What? You say you weren’t calling for suppressing my right, or banning, or deleting? Really?
Oh. Well, guess what? I wasn’t calling for suppressing the rights of those who taunt, or banning, or deleting, either. I just objected to it.
How is that any more “self-righteous” than your comment? We are both expressing an opinion about the appropriateness of what other people are saying. We both have that right.
But you know what? If you go to Austria, and deny the Holocaust, it’s a crime. They have the right to ban you from coming back. If you go to CelticsBlog and taunt them, they have the right to ban you.
Now, if you come to Britain and deny the Holocaust, it isn’t a crime here. But I still have the right to say that you were despicable for doing it in Austria, you deserved to lose the right to go there, and you are despicable for doing it here, too. And guess what? I will indeed say exactly that.

KG isnt the only trash talker in the league
Im not so sure every Boston fan “approves” of that kind of banter. Nor does it seem particularly obvious that they are making excuses for it. Face facts, winning cures alot of ills, including bad temperament. In no way is Boston fans at fault here, and to use them as an excuse for poor-sportmanship is the most juvenile remedy any troll could use.
Maybe you got banned because you repeatedly said you had made your point and was leaving, but continued to show right back up to try to rub it in. Worse yet, those rants came across as those of a slurring drunk with the intellectual agility of a soapdish. Try not to take that personally, I’m just saying, those comments didnt serve anyone well.

tip-toeing the line
I won’t make an excuse by saying I didn’t cross that line, because you see through me. Truth is I was aiming at the center of the bullseye. So RC, I’d take it back if I could.
The premise of the argument remains, that the ill-mannered posting on their board left a bad taste in both teams fans mouths. The lines being drawn seem side up those who thought it was offensive (as subjective and ambiguous as that is) versus those who took offense to those who were offended and voiced it.

But then when they need to step up and defend each other in front of the other teams fans they feel guilty and make excuses for their fellow fans.
The other fans wont respect Blazers fans if they are not united. See like that bow4meow take it to extremes. Its ok but when other team fans come here and look at this they wont respect us at all.

Nope
I said that as Blazer fan I will defend the 6 on five. He said that was crazy. I know it was crazy play, but if the refs approve it it all good, cuz the refs always make good calls.
And I was there drunk on the Blazers win not beer, and I said that Im there cuz KG talks trash when they win, so if we win i will give them their own medicine cuz allot of them approve of KG antics.
When I said I was going to leave I left, just look at the time of that comment, it was the latest.
Anyway, Yes I was rubbing it in to them, cuz of their favorite player KG. I mean if something happen really bad and i was rubbing it in I would feel bad, but its just a game and they feel like KG is always right so if he is right talking trash let them eat it too.

"When your team wins, you have won the right to some friendly ribbing."
Well, sure. But here’s the problem with your argument: it’s only “friendly” if you do it with your FRIENDS—not a bunch of strangers. And even THEN, it’s only friendly if you do it with considerable tact.
I have friends who are fans of other teams, and we enjoy tweaking each other when our teams win and/or theirs lose. But even THEN the tweaking has limits; I wouldn’t call or email them right after their team got eliminated from championship contention, for instance. It’s not “friendly” if you know the other person is genuinely in the dumps and you pile on.
To go to another team’s fan site and gloat to the total strangers there after my team beats theirs—that’s just bad form, in my opinion. There’s nothing friendly about it. My enjoyment of my chosen team doesn’t depend on contributing to their pain and disappointment. (Although I might laugh with my fellow fans about that pain—amongst ourselves.)
One other thing: whatever the derivation of the term “fan,” I don’t think you need be “fanatical” to root for a team and to have a strong identification with their fortunes. Those who are truly fanatical about it aren’t much fun to be around for the most part; they need to get an actual life. During a Blazer game, I’m prone to yell and cheer at the t.v. screen, and if the guys lose, I’m miserable for about 15 minutes. But then I pretty much calm down and refocus on other stuff—like, you know, my life. I don’t forget (entirely) that NBA hoops IS a game.
Guys who react to a loss by their team by kicking their dog, arguing with their wife, and/or just generally moping around until the next game lack balance in their lives. They end up not even being true fans, in the sense of supporting their team. They’re the guys who boo at their teams and call for guys’ heads in fan blogs. They’re the reason some players start looking at playing pro sports—their childhood dream—as a J-O-B.
Having said all that, I think your fanpost was an interesting and thought-provoking one. Keep it up.

Lots of comments and I'm not reading them all.
Here’s the thing.
Blazers Edge’s focus has been on conversation. Yes it’s for fans, but it’s been for fans who want to talk intelligently about the team. It’s to honestly identify strengths and weaknesses and REALISTICALLY dream about future possibilities (and thus shoot down trade ideas for Chris Paul because they’re in NO way real).
On most other sites, I think the ribbiing in good fun would work. However, for blazer edge representatives to do that, undermines the conversation that could also take place. You receive irrational anger and resentment as opposed to the conversation that Dave has always advocated. Additionally, you don’t know these people and they don’t know you. I’ve NEVER ribbed other people that I didn’t know (unless they play on the court for the opposite team or officiate). I only rib friends because they know it’s for fun. Others may react rather strongly and I’ve always thought poking a person while they’re down is rather low. (unless they’re friends who rooted for a team like the celtics or lakers and then I’ll NEVER let them live it down)
BlazersEdge has always tried to be a little more thoughtful and rational than the rest of the sites out there. As a result, it’s my main site of choice. Such activities undermine that thought and thus people apologizing because they recognize that that is not what this site is about. When we reach out, we want to increase conversation and debate not just tick other people off.
Greg Oden, where posters happen.

I agree with this
rb especially has it right, IMO, when he uses the word ‘conversation’. If someone wants to post on other team’s sites to engage in conversation or to dialogue, I don’t think anybody has a problem with that. Trolling to me occurs when someone goes over the line from conversation and dialogue to engage in mockery or is just trying to pick a fight. My time on boards is pretty limited, so I’m not interested in either starting those kinds of threads or responding to those who do.
I also agree that there’s a difference between ribbing people you know and people you don’t know.

These kinds of threads generally get bogged down
in what rights people have to exercise free speech and what does it mean when a moderator suppresses speech on a blog.
This is not the place where I get excited about my rights to free speech any more than I’d get excited about your right to free speech in my living room. When you are in my living room, I get to decide whether or not I want you hanging around saying what yer saying. It’s be nice if I was cool enough to let you know what the expectations are and all that, but if it gets unpleasant I will ask you to leave, just like they would in a bar, coffee shop or any other private space.
by raoulduke on Jan 2, 2009 10:58 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Yes, I've noticed that too and I agree
Unfettered free speech on the internet tends to devolve into low-brow stuff. I don’t want that around here and by extension I won’t do that on other blogs.

I've been laying the foundation
for good trolling with almost 2 years of pro-Portland posting. Soon, the day will come when I start sneaking in trade proposals, niggling doubts about Nate, etc.
Then, I will escalate. Soon, the fan base (led by me) will be calling for KP to be fired. After all, when I posted about him taking sensitive calls from an “adult actress”, it got rec’d by all of Bedge. We’ll spread rumors about PA and insider training, and he’ll have to spend all his money warding off SEC investigations.
Brandon will take the qualifying offer, play out his season, and become UFA, because he’ll want to go to a quality team without legal problems, maybe Dallas or something. LMA will say, “I like Portland, but their stupid fans won’t call me LA, so I’ll just go to a city where I can hear it all the time.” Greg will say, “KG told me if I come to Boston, he’ll show me how to send people into the 3rd row without getting called for a T. And this Paul Allen guy is running out of money, and the Blazer web sites are full of rumors about Luke” (rumors started by yours truly).
Blazer nation will implode, all because of me.
I wouldn’t have done it if Dave hadn’t revealed the thing about asparagus.
